I'm enjoying this quite a bit despite its having a lot of the things that I tend to dislike in YA fantasy. A secondary world that's more about pretty outfits than a sense of ongoing history, painfully naïve interpersonal and worldly politics (and take on religion), exceptions constantly being made for the main characters that had been set up as ironclad cultural mandates earlier.

What's keeping me going here is the main couple, both outsiders . I want them to beat the odds and get together. Even there, the idea made me chuckle. Are we going to find out that the entire royal household ?

The new character is going to have to do some heavy lifting convincing me of their being part of a love triangle, considering their introduction.

Things are heating up!!! I enjoyed this volume much more than the first volume. I got to enjoy seeing Nina and Azure interact and experience The Power of Love and it was all so sweet!

Seeing Nina impress the former King by being herself was powerful. She’s shaping up to be a boss bitch that gets things done! I like that she came up with a plan to outsmart and protect Azure while also outplaying the current King!

And this new Prince Sett? I am intrigued!! This volume ending on a cliffhanger has me racing to crack open Volume 3 to find out what’s going to happen next.

I’ve been slightly spoiled online so I know that there’s a love triangle on the horizon and I’m really hoping I like Sett as much as I like Azure.

Also seeing Azure with his hair up was a sight to behold!

Even with her pending nuptials, Nina finds time to horse around with Azure. As the two of them get a little bit closer they’re suddenly on very opposite sides of the equation than before and Nina discovers that she’s got a lot of power, but using it carries a heavy price...

So, there’s lots of charming romance in this one - some priceless Nina reactions, playful teasing, one very cute date, a fantastic moment where Azure loses his cool, the usual fluff. It’s all very sweet and innocent, despite the knowledge that Nina’s going to be married off, even as Azure starts to regret the entire plan as they spend more time together.

Then we get the first twist to this story and I nearly threw my e-reader across the room because it explains a lot about one character AND I totally should have seen that coming, but didn’t. It’s a perfect revelation for the story and gives it some extra heft. I always love when a book can actually spring something on me I wasn’t expecting and have it make perfect sense at the same time.

We also watch Nina finally learning a bit more about what it truly means to be portraying Alisha and that the needs of the many might just outweigh the needs of the few. There’s a second twist that is less surprising then the first, but still revealed with some killer panel composition, and is largely explained BY the first one.

At this point Nina has absorbed a few wise words from those around her and watching her learn to play the game is exactly what I wanted out of this volume. She’s been called a pawn many times over and, while chess is not present in the story, it’s worth remembering that pawns who can successfully navigate the board turn into queens. The way she dismantles her opponent in the moment is perfect.

And then we see that people really do stupid stuff when they’re in love and sometimes the best way to show you care is to keep that person from making that mistake on your behalf. It’s hard to say if Azure’s completely blinded in the moment - Nina simply might not be giving him credit - but it’s very believable and starts a turn into destiny and the star-crossed that I appreciated - for a fantasy story like this you might as well swing for the fences.

With Azure fleshed out quite a bit and his intentions made more plain in several respects, plus Nina’s behaviour framed less as her constantly screwing up and more her learning to work both inside and outside the system, this volume’s definitely the kind of course correction the story didn’t necessarily need but certainly pushes it up a notch in my estimation.

If I have any misgivings about this one, it’s definitely the very ending which introduces a character I suspect is meant to be our Token Rival(tm), but the tone when he’s introduced is so off-kilter from what has been a relatively composed narrative to this point that my eyebrows went up a little. Jury’s still out there.

4 stars. The cute bits are cute and the romance is engaging, but what really bumps this one up is a story genuinely surprising me (arguably twice). There’s something to be said for that and it truly kicks my estimation up a notch.

4.5 ⭐️

Oh. My. Gosh!! What an ending.
The prince of the other kingdom looks pure evil but lowkey probs gonna be a cinnamon roll 🤣 (I’m feeling sylus mixed with Callisto vibes, cause bro just shot a princess that tried to kill him, whilst pleasuring each other bruh)

Definitely liked this vol better. I hope Nina becomes strong cause the way she threatened the king was 😮 (yasss queen). Azure and Nina are so cute together I hope this new prince doesn’t get in the way of their relationship cause I don’t want this to be another case of second love interest syndrome 😫😭

The king is so cruel I didn’t expect him to get all upset about a chess game and then bam he hits his kid only for him to knock his head and pass. I hope he gets what he deserves.

Need to get the next vol. this is getting very interesting!!!

I’m still really enjoying this series and getting to know more about NIna and Prince Azure. That said, I’m a bit hesitant about the insta-love between them. It feels like their connection comes more from shared life experiences and the comfort they find in each other rather than a naturally developed romance. There’s nothing exceptionally wrong with that but it just feels a bit too fast-paced for my taste (though I might just be more of a slowburn reader).

I’m definitely continuing the series though! I love watching Nina and the Little Prince Muhulum, and I’m eager to meet the prince Nina is destined to marry.

The ending definitely intrigued me, and some of the world building is cool. Not to mention the royal family is so messed up, and I’m curious to see where it goes! But I don’t have any feelings for Azure and Nina as a couple. I think if there had been more time to build tension I could have been down for it. As it is, I’m not really convinced of their feelings, nor do I care. That being said, I’m pretty sure this is going to be a love triangle, so maybe I’ll like the other pairing more.

Overall a fun story, but the world and politics, though interesting, are a bit juvenile.

5/5 estrellas

This volume was much better for me! I really love Nina and Az together.. I’m not 100% sold on the romance but I won’t deny that they are precious together. The ending made me so emotional! I’m looking forward to the next volume because I love me some morally grey characters.

So much happened in this volume. We learn more about Az and Nina. The secrets of the Royal family and our first introduction of the king she should marry. I will say it is a little fast for love but you know what I kind of get for both of them when they live in the environment they do.

Vol. 1 ★★★☆☆

One of the major reveals in this volume is silly. The mangaka is absolutely stretching credulity there. For it to happen once, sure. But twice? That's a bit much. Other than that, I enjoy the steady increase in political intrigue. I love how Nina isn't content to let things happen to her and takes destiny into her hands. Also, the chibi Ninas are so adorable.

Geez, this series is a bit more violent than I thought 😲 The romance development is also a bit sudden- but I’m glad that they are both quite honest that they like each other 🤔

Got the Humble Bundle with various series including this one! It's been a while since I read the first volume (May 2021) but I thought I would just dive into the second book and see if I could get everything. And yes, I did! At first a bit confusion, but then I settled, my mind found the details + the story told me some things, and boom. This was a fun 2nd volume with plenty of gorgeous art (that makes you wish you could have a manga with colour), some romance (I just love Azure and Nina together), some GASP moments (Nina's plan), and then there is the ending. Yes, I don't agree with Nina what she did there, but I do understand her reasons and I hope that in the next volume we see what is next for her and Azure. All in all, happy I can continue reading this series~
