Mourning can take many paths, it’s a struggle to find the answers of the why. Dick worries about his family but when he feels they’re safe he pushes things to the point of death. Losing himself in a nightmarish fantasy of his minds own devising. The only thing he truly knows is, “ I have to run.”
However, when death doesn’t come for him, he escapes into drug induced hallucinations to spend time with his wife. However, Sarah finds him in his feral state and helps him to find his way. His savior who somehow becomes a sadist, killing him just to find that tomorrow brings his return.
Cat’s seductive touch is an unrequited passion that may never be returned. Her self-image is destroyed as her passions burn within her like a raging flame across the prairie. Even when drenched in his blood her grief can never be sated, try as she might there is no way to love and grieve when she doesn’t even know herself.
Check TWs but I definitely want to thank the author for gifting me a copy of this book. I had no idea what to expect but was pulled by the title. This MMC faces a horrible loss but goes through so much surrounding this time; I also just watched dope sick and the hallucinations I sometimes could not tell if it was really happening or .. just trippy. I really enjoyed this read!
I love me a dark book that leaves me thinking long after I put it down and this book did just that.
I was really pulled in most by this unique plot, the mc takes mourning to the next level and does whatever he can to try and ease the ache, the amount of trauma this character goes through from war and other events you can't help but feel emotional while devouring this read, the author did an amazing job of not only getting you to connect with the character but actually making you feeling his pain at various points.
The whole paranormal aspect that Shannon uses in the story line is very interesting, couple that with the mc having hallucinations and I felt at times that the mc was actually going crazy and I didn't know how the book was going to pan out in the end.
I would advise you check your tw but also if you like dark books then definitely pick this up asap. It will leave you reeling after you finish but in the best way.
Wow. I wasn't at all sure what I was going to encounter between the covers of this book. Most definitely a unique take on a paranormal healing journey. The love in this story is one of the many 'hurdles' the mmc needs to overcome on his way to recovering himself after a great loss. This is compounded by the lingering traumas of war and the catalyst that is an other-worldly event. There were times when I wasn't at all sure if I was reading a straight up hallucination, or if there was something truly unexplainable going on.
Readers should definitely take the warnings seriously before diving into this one, but if you are into darker themes and you want a story that isn't just a retelling of 100s of other stories out there, read this. I can't wait to see what Dick gets up to next ;)
Well written and keeps the reader intrigued. The very "real" conversations in this story had me hooked! I couldn’t wait to see where the story was going, and I was extremely pleased that there will be more books to follow.
Richard is former military battling with PTSD and reeling from the recent loss of his wife Wendy. This book reflects upon and explores many facets of military mentality including post deployment coping and depression.
I would like to start my review by saying please check the trigger warnings!! I want to thank the author for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book!!
How much loss and trauma can a person truly take? There were definitely parts of this book that I had to stop myself and re read because it leaves you going “wait…what?”.
I’m definitely going to check out his other books, I’m hooked!
