this was written for young adults but unlike so many books for this readership, the author did not write DOWN to them. It was not the type of book i normally read so I was surprised to find myself enjoying it. Still. i would not recommend it for most adult readers.

This was an intense book that really affected me in the early 1980s. Based on the seizure of the US embassy in Iran and resulting hostage crisis, the story posits a similar experience as perceived by a teenage girl who is the daughter of the US ambassador. She makes friends with one of the insurgents who is holding her and the other foreigners hostage. Unfortunately, the ending is much more apocalyptic than the actual hostage crisis, and it was terrifying to me as a young teen. Highly recommended, and actually quite relevant to the current "tinder box" situation in the Middle East.
