A widowed, heavily pregnant mother. A recently released outlaw. A blizzard, a train derailment, and a chance at happiness neither anticipated when their lives collide on Christmas Eve 1899. As snow swirls around him, James Dodson climbs the train’s metal steps, weary and hungry but finally free. He’s heading to his sisters after six long years of serving for his crimes with one goal and that is to start over and build a future he should have started long ago.
Rose McGaven scrambles to board the train on route to Helena, Montana with her young son, praying she can disappear from the clutches of her vicious brother-in-law who only has one thing on his mind and it isn’t protecting his late brother’s wife. As the only passengers on a train that has just derailed, James comes to her rescue when Rose needs it most. As they navigate a path neither expected, difficulties from their pasts endanger their future, but James makes a promise he’s not willing to neglect. Will Rose let James keep his promise or will she let fear rule her heart and let their chance at happiness disappear like a flame snuffed out from a harsh winter’s breeze?

This was a bit of torture. It is a historic western romance with a couple open door scenes. This book is in the middle of the series and should probably be read in order. There were several times that I was confused who different side characters were.
James is what kept me interested. He had a very tortured past and only wanted to have a quiet life once he was out of prison. He was a bit insistent on being involved with Rose, but he was looking out for her and truly cared about her. I loved that he worked so hard to be 'worthy' of her and actually cared about her. He was the one to notice that she had the Baby Blues and then did something to help her work through it.
Rose is what killed this story for me. I don't understand how she could take so much time to be away from her newborn baby. She was so cold to James so often and lashed out at him. Eventually she does apologize, but still the damage is done.
I did not like the ending conflict. I thought it was way too long for her children to be missing. I don't get why it took James so long to travel to retrieve them and come back. It took 9 months... that is ridiculous.
Overall, I won't be reading anymore from this author.
I for some reason I thought this was going to be a quick, cheesy, clean romance. It proved to be none of these. There were errors throughout the book. I found the main characters not very likable, especially the woman. It was a struggle to get through. Would not recommend.
A story entirely it’s own set in the same world as Thundering Mountain. A chance sharing of a train at Christmas will forever change the lives of Rose and James. Will love prevail over the forces of the world determined to keep them apart ? Filled with love and sexual tension. You will read this book quickly because you are rooting for the characters, get excited by love scenes, and appreciate the ones you love all the more for reading the book
Great story! I was so invested in the characters that I couldn't put this book down. I plan to read every book in this series! If you love a western romance with a little steam, you will enjoy this story.
