The Boice Commentary series combines careful scholarship and clear communication in a verse-by-verse and section by section reading of various biblical texts. Combining thoughtful interpretation with contemporary insight for daily living, James Montgomery Boice explains the meaning of the text and relates the text's concerns to the church, Christianity, and the world in which we live. Whether used for devotions, preaching, or teaching, this authoritative and thought-provoking series will appeal to a wide range of readers, from serious Bible students to interested laypersons.
"The psalms themselves," says Boice, "speak so powerfully to the hurts, fears, disappointments, faith, hope, and spiritual aspirations of God's people." This second volume in the Psalms collection discusses Psalms 42-106, exploring the emotion in each that intimately relates us to God.
James Montgomery Boice was a Reformed theologian, Bible teacher, and pastor of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia from 1968 until his death in 2000. He was also president and cofounder of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals, the parent organization of The Bible Study Hour on which Boice was a speaker for more than thirty years.
Author and preacher James Montgomery Boice has created a second volume on the book of Psalms.
His style is to analyze the structure of the psalm, review the ideas it conveys in its various sections, and link it to other psalms and scriptures in the Bible. He also provides a survey of Christian commentators like Luther, Jonathan Edwards, Spurgeon, and many others.
I've learned a lot through him. Although I've studied Psalms daily for eight years and more, I've picked up many more insights thanks to his teaching. He writes his commentary as one would structure a sermon: in a logical, expository manner.
I highly recommend this book for any student of the Bible.
I can't believe how long it took me to finish this book. I read it in spurts. I would read for a while, then neglect it for a long while and then come back to it. The long time that I took to read it does not reflect my appreciation of it. It truly was a great book. It has given me a greater understanding of the Psalms and a love for them.
I have been studying one of the Psalms 3-4 times a week and this book has been very helpful. He helps open up the richness of the Psalms and points out how they related to their original context, as well as how they would relate to us today. I have grown in my enjoyment and appreciation of the Psalms through books such as this.
page numbers continue from Vol1. 365 and go on to 859. Finished now. enjoyed it but was a long task. Boice is very helpful in his comments and brings the Psalms very much to your current situation.
