page 75, #20 “See your addiction not as the central problem but as a symptom of a life that is not planted and growing in God. Get into recovery as a total life overhaul, not just to fix a symptom.”
"symptom of a life that is not planted and growing in God" This reminded me of Psalm 1:3 "And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” Jeremiah 17:7-8 “Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. 8 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.” Ezekiel 17:5 “He took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful field; he placed it by great waters, and set it as a willow tree.” Ezekiel 31:7 “Thus was he fair in his greatness, in the length of his branches: for his root was by great waters.”
-Those who don’t want His help “…are like the chaff (protective seed covering) which the wind driveth away.” Psalm 1:4 -That is hard for that person, and those who love them, which includes God.
I recently read "A Banquet in the Grave," another book on addictions. I found that book to be long-winded, redundant, more than a little out of touch, and a tad pompous. This is the kind of book that I think IS practical and meaningful for addiction treatment. Short, to the point, applicable, and encouraging while still calling things like they are. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to have a pocket companion for personal use, or for family/friends to read for a better perspective.
For those who want an alternative to the "spiritual" solution offered in 12-step programs, this book puts Christ in the place of the higher power. Yay!
