A thoughtful adventure story for boys. Raising questions of fairness - and whether stealing and lying are in any way justified when motivated by a thirst for justice (and just a touch of revenge) - this story of Jem striking up an unlikely friendship with a bushranger is simple but lively.
It's a happy day for Jem and his dad. They've just scrimped and saved and even occasionally starved to save up enough money to buy their tiny plot of land from Captain Ross.
But Ross triples the price. And demands Jem come work for him on his property. Then he shoots Jem's faithful dog.
When a bushranger strips Ross of his fine clothes, takes his horse and his bulging wallet, Jem is secretly delighted.

An authentic, gripping story of 1841 in Australia for middle-grade readers upwards. I really enjoyed the characters, plot and story and would recommend it for any children or young people to read, especially if they like bushrangers, adventure and justice.

I was expecting more from this book, really want a great Australian story for boys and this almost made it. Good twist towards the end and like able characters but I wanted more excitement and adventure.

A nice, fun, and simple Australian novel for upper primary/lower secondary readers. A simple story but very enjoyable - will definitely be recommending it!

The book was ok but it was pretty boring because nothin really big or shocking happened in the book. a few times i thought that I would put it down but I eventually got through it

September 9, 2017I allowed my child to read this to himself only to be asked "Is 'Fork It!' a swear word?"
Needless to say I am not impressed that the author used this word as a substitute word and I am reluctant to allow him to read any more titles in the series. Having said that though, he otherwise enjoyed it and there are very few historical fiction books written for boys in this age group.
