OMG
These dramatized adaptations are SO GOOD! I am obsessed (and Curran's voice is yummy!!).

After Derek is found, almost dead, in the middle of the night, and Kate is brought to the Midnight Games by Saiman, she is thrown in the middle of a scheme led by a mysterious group of super fighters who seem to want the Pack’s demise ultimately.

Whereas the first book focused more on Scandinavian folklore, and the second on Celtic legends, this one had Hindu myths all over it. I love how the authors seem to pick a different influence for each book, and build the plot around the legends and mythical creatures of this culture. It allows us to have a different vibe in each book and to explore different folklore, without resorting to major info-dumps or overly complicated explanations.

There is a lot of action in this book. Kate is investigating an illegal gladiator-style competition, until she and a group of friends and allies are forced to compete in the competition to defeat the bad guys and save the Pack. The fight scenes are a good mix of magic and physical battle, and they are detailed and clear enough to make it easy to picture them in our heads, without being too long. It created a fast-paced book, full of action and with a complex enough plot to keep me engaged until the very end.

Kate’s backstory is so very similar to Alice Worth’s. The Alice Worth series was written many years after the Kate Daniels series, but I did read it first, so I am not shocked by any of the revelations about Kate’s past, because I saw it all coming from miles away since it’s the same backstory as Alice. It’s a good thing for Ms. Emond that I read her series first, otherwise I would not have been able to enjoy it, knowing that it was written nearly a decade after Kate Daniels' books were, but had main characters that were so so so similar.

That being said, I love Kate. She is a great, flawed, and layered main character, and the authors managed a good combination of badass vibe, empathy, and vulnerability. I love how all the more important characters in this series are complex and have depth. The secondary characters are not simply there to make the main character shine or as a plot device. They are fleshed out, and I find myself wanting to know more about them. I loved seeing more of Jim and Saiman in this book, and I just love how Kate has this complex appreciation/hate relationship with Saiman. She dislikes him, but she knows she needs him, and I do think that deep down, she does not wish him harm.

I loved seeing more of Andrea and Raphael, too. Andrea is the perfect kickass best friend for Kate, always there to help her shoot things, but also willing to let her know when she is screwing up. Raphael is still a very suave bouda, but he impressed me with his willingness to help Kate, not only to impress Andrea, but also because he genuinely likes Kate and considers her a friend of the boudas.

I missed Curran in this book. Up until the last third of so, he was not very present, and when he was there, it was for short scenes, and then he would vanish again for a few chapters. I love his and Kate’s interactions, their banter, and the tension between them, and I missed it for the first half of the book. On the other hand, the authors have been building tension between those two for 3 books now, and I just love the slow burn. Too often in paranormal series, the romance feels rushed, and it even overshadows the plot sometimes, but in this series, it is a part of the plot, but a secondary one. The romance is important to the character development and their dynamics, but it is not rushed at all, and it feels realistic with what we’ve seen of Kate and Curran. I just love how they both struggle with their feelings, and with having “normal” and peaceful interactions with each other.

I am jumping into the fourth book right away. I am officially hooked to this series, and I can’t wait to see what awaits Kate next!

~ 5 Magic Strikes Stars ~
(No Spoilers)

A FANTASTIC read in Urban Fantasy where magic, mystery, and technology blend together into a fast-paced action-packed adventure.

Magic Strikes is book three in the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. Their is no rest for Kate and her friends as we are thrown back into Atlanta, with new players wreaking destruction and a highly illegal underground game.

Kate is one kick-ass heroine that I thoroughly enjoy reading. She has heart, a core of steel, and moves to back herself up. I like her character development. In this one she is trying to adjust to having friends and people she cares about. All her life she was told to never make friends or have a relationship, so for her this is new and goes agents what she was taught. The author gives us more information on Kate’s past, who she really is, and why she tries to stay hidden. As things go you can not hide forever and the choices she makes will expose her to her enemies. Her relationship with Curren is also changing. He’s chasing/courting her as a shifter would and she is totally in denial. I am enjoy how this relationship is progressing and developing.

The author introduces us to more characters that we will be seeing in future installments. Saiman makes more of an appearance in the novel and we get one BIG SURPRISE from him. Jim opens up to us a little about his past. This is something unusual for his character, because he is very closed off with everyone. Last, the author gives us more information about Roland. All the secondary characters are enjoyable and entertaining.

The foreshadowing in Magic Strikes is out of this world and the ending was superb. I am hooked and can’t wait to read the next installment. What a wild adventure!

A FABULOUS read! If you enjoy Urban Fantasy, then this series is a must read. The Andrews team have created a unique in-depth world full of mystery, magic and technology blended together for an action-packed non-stop adventure.

Audio: This is still one of my favorites in the series. I love the Midnight Games. The audio is outstanding. I love listening to the Kate Daniels series.

I can't believe I waited so long to read this series! Kate Daniels is a wonderful character that stands apart from a lot of the UF females who have no vulnerabilities and jump into bed with an Alpha male or males right away. Kate is different. Yes she's tough and has some strong abilities but she is also vulnerable and can even get beat up. This gives you a sense that things could go wrong and Kate is actually in danger. I also love the slow build of the romance with Curran. It's been obvious where this romance is going since book one but there's no rush to get there and this gives Kate a chance to build relationships with other characters.

There was a lot happening in this book. It's filled with suspense, danger, action and humor. I found myself laughing out loud a couple of times and this doesn't happen to me often. We find out more about Kate's past and see the fear/tension she has between helping her friends and revealing exactly who she is and what she's capable of.

This is a book that makes you want to dive right in and live in the world that they inhabit. I'd move there in a heartbeat! Another amazing book in the series and I can't wait to jump into the next one.

Listened to the graphic audio this time through and I still love this series and in particular this book. In fact this may be my favorite - I laugh every time I read the fight scene they were supposed to barely win. I love all the scenes between Kate and Curran and my heart breaks for Derek. Plus with the graphic audio we get the scenes from Curran's POV. 3rd time through and it won't be my last. This is probably the only series I read the entire thing through every couple of years.

I'm probably just being needlessly picky but I'm going to downgrade this one sliiiightly to a 4.5.

Because while I still did get emotional at some key feels-y moments, I do think it strikes a stronger chord for me reading it physically and not being distracted by all the effects and voices. But still, they did a really good job bringing this one to life because this has a lot. A lot of action, a lot of reveals, a lot of emotions, a lot of fights (action is different, okay).

Also, for those keeping track, I was one short story too generous in my prediction for the Curran POVs. We got everything but the dinner. Saving that for after book four, are we? Okay fine, string me along.

I'm definitely not burning out (in fact I'm burning the midnight oil pushing through for just one more minute and then another and another!) but may take a break just to keep my brain from audio fatigue. Can't wait to continue on though.

My favorite urban fantasy series was made even better because of the GraphicAudio dramatized adaptation. These audios are truly a ‘movie in your mind.’ With the perfect casting of narrators, the producers captured the exact voice to personify each character.

Yep, since discovering these new audiobooks, I’ve been on a Kate Daniels series binge. I finished Magic Strikes Dramatized Adaption in less than a day. Finished books one and two earlier this week. I can’t seem to queue them up fast enough.

Book three is where I began to fall in love with this series when reading it for the first time. While books one and two are very enjoyable, by book three I had accumulated enough world building and character arc to fully appreciate the story and connect with the cast. Besides, the vague romantic vibes that were present in earlier books materialized here. Also, with this book we become aware of Kate’s origins, which hints at the power and magic she has that will eventually mature. They don’t call her ass kicker for nothing.

While each book has a mythological based mystery that is unique and interesting, it is the greater overarching story that I crave. The characters become old friends that I am eager to learn more about with each addition to the series.

Next up, book four, Magic Bleeds Dramatized Adaptation .

Each book brings more creative world building, a twisty plot, snappy dialogue, series story arc development, sparkling characters and just some of the best Urban Fantasy has to offer. Kate is a heroine who I just can't wait to join on her adventures whether it is helping a friend, delivering justice or provoking a Beast Lord who stalks her with patience claiming she's his. The gladiatorial event with the unbeatable mysterious team vs Kate and her friends was so tension-filled and exciting. And Saiman! What a trickster! Loved getting the down low on him. Poor Derek really stepped in it this time and he pays dearly too.

I like how the story begins with lots of mysterious events and people and bad situations and then gets worse until Kate and her friends were up against the wall even as the mystery starts to unveil itself. It goes from bad to epic bad. This one brought a large cast of favorites together, provided many Kate and Curran encounters and in the end people learned so much more of Kate's secrets.

The Graphic Audio edition with music, sounds effects, and full cast was brilliant. Nora as narrator is sensational. The GA edition brings that extra oomph and sparkle to an already solid story. The big scenes reach that much deeper into the listener for a response. Glad Nora's doing the whole series.

Can't wait to continue with this series and its been fun to read the Curran volumes added at the end to get Curran's take on things too.

My favorite so far! Things have been slowly building in books 1 and 2, but Magic Strikes took it up to a whole new level! Lots of action and adventure like normal, but we finally get some movement in the Curran + Kate relationship (the hot tub!) and we get a lot more information about Kate's past (talk about daddy issues). I really enjoyed the gladiator style Midnight Games competition and it kept things interesting and helped maintain the momentum of the story. I'm really excited to see how things unfold between Kate and Curran and also the consequences of what Kate revealed in the games. I'm really enjoying experiencing this via GraphicAudio and it's a nice bonus that the corresponding Curran POV shorts are also included at the end.

I love the series.

I took a break between book one and two but because there are no cliffhangers there only the curiosity of a reader, who wants to know how the story goes on, it's easy to take a break and do something else.

But I picked it up after finishing another ebook I was reading. And now I have binged the second and the third graphicaudio books. They are so much fun and I like to listen to the multiple narrators.

I’m continuing to have a blast re-experiencing this series in Graphic Audio format. I remember reading this years ago when I was 19 or 20 years old and desperately wanting them to make a TV show based on this series. These Graphic Audios with the various actors, sound effects, and music are as close as I’ll get to that wish and I’m ok with that because they’re so well produced!

Series: Kate Daniels #3
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

When Derek is discovered nearly dead, Kate is determined to bring down the assailants. Her investigations lead her to the Midnight Games, a deadly fighting tournament, where she has to work with the Pack, and Curran, to stop a dark plot.

“I gave him a smile. I was aiming for sweet, but he turned a shade paler and scooted a bit farther from me. Note to self: work more on sweet and less on psycho-killer.”

Since it's been years since I have read this series, it’s like I am reading this for the first time. I didn’t remember anything about this book except the deal Kate made with Curran for a date. Kate is just as badass as I remember her being. I can’t get enough of the tension between her and Curran.

“Despite all his growling and threats, his arrogance, I liked being next to him. He made me feel safe. It was a bizarre emotion. I was never safe.”

Curran finally starts getting more aggressive in his pursuit of Kate in this book. The tension between these two, especially after Kate lost the bet and has to cook him dinner now! I can’t wait to read that scene in the next book because I know it is going to be steamy!

This book was nonstop action from the beginning. So much is going on but it is all so fascinating I didn’t want to put the book down. I love that we are seeing more of Andrea, Derek, and Jim because they are my favorite side characters from the first two books. I really enjoyed seeing them work together to bring down their enemies. It was intense, bloody, and badass!

As I said, I am loving this world and can’t put the books down. I am immediately jumping into the next book because I can’t wait to find out what craziness is going to happen next.

This is my favorite of the whole series, so I had very high expectations going into the Graphic Audio version. HOO BOY, DID THEY DELIVER. All of my favorite scenes were captured magnificently. It's like being transported directly into the story, until I was on the sand listening to the crowd right next to Kate, Curran, Raphael, Andrea, Derek, and Jim. Derek's gravelly voice! Julie's heartbreak! HUGH D'AMBRAY!! Holy hot damn. I didn't think it was possible to be more obsessed than I already am but here we are. Every star possible for this excellent adaptation.

5/5 - My favorite book of the series so far!

I really loved this book.

Quick Review:
♦︎ Urban fantasy
♦︎ Norse mythology
♦︎ Hindu mythology
♦︎ Paranormal
♦︎ Kate Daniels (MC) – A tough, sarcastic mercenary Knight of the Order, background revealed in this book!
♦︎ Curran – Beast lord, his interactions with Kate <3
♦︎ Romance – SLOW BURN but so worth it
♦︎ Mystery – A new supernatural threat to solve
♦︎ Action-packed – Gladiator arena style!

The pacing was okay def better than the first two books!

The romance is painfully a slow burn, but I wouldn't want it any other way. At least we get a lot more romantic moments in this book! I love Curran and Kate’s interactions and watching their relationship grow and become an actual relationship instead of them trying to kill each other lol. Let us take a moment to appreciate the hot tub scene 🫦 and another appreciation for Kate making that promise to Curran, and Curran delivering 😮‍💨 The ending too? Hello? Curran ATE 💅🏻 Now im ready for Kate to make good on her promise! Thank you Ilona Andrews I ATE IT UP! 🧎‍♀️

I also love all the characters in this. Was ready to get revenge with Kate for Derek! Also watching Kates family grow through the books is so sweet. First book her last living family member was murdered and she was all alone. Now she has an adopted daughter or more like shes acting as the crazy aunt, she has a teenager werewolf sidekick, a BEST FRIEND, and a highly potential pinning for her mate. Slay Kate! 😩 We love that for you! <3

I really like that the authors didn't make Kate over powered like girly literally stays getting beaten up, bloody, and bruised. Some times it’s even a close call on her life, but she also is super tough, badass, not weak, and can def carry her own. Its a very good balance and through the books were watching her powers grow!

What’s so cool with this series is that each book is introducing different mythologies. This book we got a little bit of Norse mythology and a lot of Hindu mythology which plays into the different types of paranormal beings we see. It’s not just your typical vampire, werewolf, and witches.

This book and honestly the whole series so far has offered urban fantasy, lots and i mean LOTS of action, mythology, eat it up romance (some great enemies to lovers dynamic), a healthy balance of serious moments and funny moments, and its just all round so good. So far this is my favorite book of the series!

My review of the first book: Magic Bites.
My review of the second book: Magic Burns.

Magic Strikes Dramatized Adaptation (Kate Daniels, #3) by Ilona Andrews Not my first rodeo with this book or this version though I can't believe I didn't read it in 2024. I did twice in 2023. Hrm... Anyway, awesome cast and narration. On to the next!

2023 Graphic Audio Book release: Okay. That was just plain fun. 'Nuff said.

2023: Ah, the Midnight Games. Many interesting facts come out in this one. And Curran's true colors. *bwahaha* This is definitely becoming a "chicken soup" series for me. Also, audio of the two new novellas are to release in early July. We'll see. I've been waiting.

2022: Pretty sure I've read/listened to this book more than 4 times but whatever. Still love the series.

2021: This series is hitting the right spot. I'm so fed up with the world at the moment, I'd love to be Kate and just get to go out there and do stuff. Violent stuff. For the good of mankind. And shifters. Oh, the sparks between she and Curran. Derek breaks my heart always, and Dr. Doolittle finally shifts to his cure-all--sweet tea. The authors pull no punches in this one.

2020: What happens to Derek always makes me sniffle. The scene at Julie's school always makes me smile. And then there's Curran and Kate...

Previous review: Every time I read/listen to this book, I start out thinking that this isn't one of my favorites in the series. And then I get totally sucked in and it becomes one of my favorites. The trials and tribulations of Kate's relationship with Curran continue. Things are unsettled in the pack. Rafael is pursuing Andrea. And there are bad people getting ready to take on the Pack. Enter Hugh D'Ambray, the Preceptor of the Iron Dogs, Roland's war lord. Roland, of course, being Kate's nemesisr, and the man she plans to eventually kill. Fun times! And a full 5 stars.

Re-read - September 2023 (Graphic Audio edition)

This was even more fun the second time around! Either these stories were made for GA, or GA's production is just really fantastic on this series. It really brings the characters and the world to life.

Similar to my previous experience, my reading of this was a little disjointed. And once again, while the fight scenes and pack interactions are fantastic, I still can't bring myself to care about the actual enemy/mythology in this story. Still, that was a fairly minor element so I enjoyed this overall. I especially enjoyed Kate and Currans (hilariously over-competent) first battle, and the last battle where

I forgot that we meet Hugh d'Ambray in this book, he feels like a completely different character to what he becomes later in the series.

I think this is the last book before the Roland plot starts kicking in, and as a result it feels the most romance-focused. I really loved Kate and Curran's chemistry here and wish there was more of this in the later books.

---------------------

Original Review - March 2022

I took a break in the middle of this to read other things so my experience was a little disjointed. I really like the gladiatorial side of this story, the battle scenes were fun. This was still a 4-star read for me, but the best in the series so far.

I'm excited to see progress in Kate and Curren's romance. I love that Derek is basically Kate's sidekick and that Kate so willingly adopted Julie.

Magic Strikes , the third book in the Kate Daniels series, definitely amps up the excitement and solidifies why this series is so beloved. After the improvements in Magic Burns , I was expecting a lot from this installment, and it didn’t disappoint!

The pacing here is much tighter compared to the first two books, with barely a moment to catch your breath as the stakes get higher and the action becomes nonstop.

One of the standout aspects of this book is how it expands on the world-building while keeping the focus firmly on the plot. We’re introduced to new elements like the People, the Pack dynamics, and even more magical creatures, all of which add depth to the already fascinating universe Ilona Andrews has created. The tournament setting was such a unique and thrilling backdrop for the story, it kept me on the edge of my seat.

Of course, Curran remains my favorite character, and his interactions with Kate are as electric as ever. Their chemistry continues to evolve, and it’s clear how much they care for each other, even if neither of them is ready to fully admit it yet. Speaking of characters, I also loved seeing more of Derek and Julie, I feel they added heart and humor to balance out the action.

The audiobook narration once again deserves a shoutout because it brings so much energy to the story. The voice acting really elevates the tension and emotion, making it hard to pause. By the end of Magic Strikes , I was completely hooked and already itching to start the next book. This series just keeps getting better, and I’m loving every moment of it!

I 100% loved this Graphic Audio version of Magic Strikes. I love that when they're bantering or joking, you can hear the narrators chuckling. Nora Sofyan as Kate Daniels does a great job, and I almost feel like I'm there in the scene and in the conversation. Michael Glenn as Curran has definitely grown on me, and I feel like he is really bringing out this character.

I loved the story. It's funny and action intense, and the smoldering chemistry between Kate and Curran is delicious. I found myself smiling or laughing along as I was listening. I felt the angst and pain during the emotional and serious moments too. You also get Curran's POV a the end, and his POV is awesome.

This series is fantastic. I plan to listen to all of the Graphic Audio books, and then, eventually, go back and read the actual books.

⭐4.5 - I really liked it
Narrators: Nora Sofyan as Kate Daniels, Michael Glenn as Curran, KenYatta Rogers as Jim (I'm absolutely in love with his voice),

I really liked the story in this one. Not so much the relationship between Kate and Curran but that was tolerable enough.

I enjoy listening to graphic audio because of the elaborate editing with sounds, music, full cast of voice actors. However, I don't like that it is abridged and some details are removed.

This is the third book and the best so far! I really enjoyed this one. The pacing, the action, the mystery and the revelations , the relationship development... A lot of things evolved in this novel.

It's a great urban fantasy. I now understand why this series is so popular.

I really like Curran pov at the end of the audiobook.

This story is so epic! The underground gladiatorial games. The danger, the savagery, the tension. I also love the further development of Kate's little world of friends and family. The slow growth is so natural and beautiful to behold. I love the excruciatingly slow burn between her and Curran.

There is so much more of Kate's past that is revealed in this book, and she finally opens up and confides in others regarding her heritage. There is so much growth and development. It also has some extremely emotional moments, which are definitely heightened by listening to the Graphic Audio version. It gives so much more depth actually hearing the inflection and emotions of the characters.

Book #3 in this series ratchets up the tension in action as Kate and the shapeshifters face fantastical even really scary "others" in gladiator-style competition. Enough summary. Every Ilona Andrews book is a masterpiece of Urban Fantasy with a spectrum of characters within all the possibilities or realms of fantasy - and many that must be made up. Incredible creativity in character, plot, dialogue - name it. GraphicAudio also ratchets up the intensity of the action with their excellent production.

Omg, this was the best book yet. Everything about this series clicks. Kate is the ultimate urban fantasy protagonist – a jaded but honorable protagonist in a chaotic world churning with supernatural energy trying to do right by her friends, family and society – with a dark mysterious love interest, natch.

This continues to be a great series, and if you've been reading it so far, you must read this one. This story finally reveals Kate's mysterious background and it is as shocking as you can imagine. She continues to be a kickass FMC who doesn't need a man in her life, not that there aren't men who are trying. Lots of character development and lots of action, this series has really come together.
