Socialna kritična drama Ivana Cankarja o obsedenosti z voljo do moči.
I did it. This book completes my around the world reading challenge. I have now read one book set in every country! 23 August 2017 to 8 December 2023. That’s over six years. I am going to do a statistical analysis on this once I get organised, but for now, I will focus on the book that completed the challenge…thank you Slovenia.
This fictional play was about a rich inkeeper who had it all. But at the cost of having blood on his hands. Stealing, killing, taking all that he could to build his empire. The setting is mostly in a tavern. The cast were his family, relatives, his daughter’s suitors, and a whole bunch of people who he wronged, or who knew of his wrongdoings.
The main theme is whether or not the price of taking is worth it. Many of the characters confront his conscience. Children begging and what not. But then, things start slipping away, and his gains are hollow.
There are some acts involving public perception too. Having the church and the courts in hand, with the splashing of much needed generosity. Things build up to a crescendo, leaving with a moment of reflection. Life goes on, but is that living?
The 3 stars are mostly for the good plot, and interesting premise. It was an easy read, but not a wow read. I did learn a fair bit about Slovenia and it was a nice book to finish on.
The book was written in 1901 and then you could already see that money can buy everything. I hate that kind od people, that even a dead body won't stop them. The book is good.
Knjiga me je pustila razočarano.
