A time traveler returns to present day United States to rescue a police officer in Washington, D.C. Will they be able to turn the tide in the fight to save humanity from its own Darwin award? Find out, in the best science fiction love story since The Fifth Element.
Ballowe’s tale of splits in time stands as a representative of the power of change—no matter how minimal. Reminiscent of other historical time travel stories, such as Stephen King’s 11/22/63, we are taken through a world that proves how politics is an ever-shifting idea that can change course in the blink of an eye.
Ballowe’s exploration of the existence of people brought together through time and history creates a scene where any one of us might find a home. We may be from the 21st century. Or the 31st. Either way the perseverance of the human ability to alter reality yet maintain our own fatal flaws is clearly stated.
Each backstory of every character begs the question of how our concept of life may be influenced by the actions of those before and after us; how our day-to-day experiences are not entirely a result of us or our direct ancestors; how they may not have been created because of politics or the environment; of how they are an amalgamation of various histories colliding.
Ballowe also establishes the idea that almost nothing is a certainty—especially the tenants of life that we hold closest to us as truths. The only certainty is that change is inevitable.
Who can imagine the terrifying events that end life on Earth? I know I can’t. Yet in this exciting tale, author Mason Ballowe has described how life ends, as well as the remarkable heroes who fight day in and day out to save humanity. Needless to say, I was enamored. It’s a wild story, chock full of adventure and action, with just the right amount of romance. I definitely felt for Nac, as he’s thrust from one crazy situation into another and one year into another. I’m intrigued enough to follow this author and see what comes next!
An awesome book from a great new author! I stumbled upon this and the level of detail is incredible. I’m looking forward to more Mason Ballowe books in the future!
