As a child, S. A. Adams would lie awake at night listening to the coyotes' howl. Their yellow eyes glowed in the dark outside his window in Southern Arizona. He told himself stories to fall asleep. Due to his parent’s careers and family issues, he had a whirlwind childhood, being thrown around to ten different schools in twelve years. He graduated from George Mason University in 2004, but suburban Virginia wasn’t exotic enough to settle down. His love for all things African brought him back to the continent in 2005, and he currently resides in Mozambique. He still hears the coyotes howling in his dreams
In S. A. Adams' "Paleolithic - Exiles," the sequel to the compelling "Paleolithic" saga, readers are once again transported into a meticulously crafted prehistoric world. Set against a backdrop of survival, loyalty, and tribal conflict, the story follows the resilient clan led by Sira as they navigate the challenges of a desolate wilderness. Adams weaves a gripping narrative filled with historical accuracy and vivid detail, challenging the conventional portrayal of prehistoric societies. The characters in "Paleolithic - Exiles" are not just figures in a bygone era; they are deeply human, facing trials that resonate with themes of courage, forbidden love, and redemption. Adams skillfully explores the intricacies of clan cultures and the indomitable spirit of the human condition. Readers will find themselves captivated by the authentic depiction of the Paleolithic era, with Adams seamlessly blending paleontological discoveries with a riveting storyline. The clash between tribes, led by the charismatic Nara, adds layers of complexity to the narrative, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. "Paleolithic - Exiles" is more than a historical fiction; it's an immersive experience that transcends time. Adams has not only written a sequel that lives up to its predecessor but has also set a new standard in the genre. This is a must-read for those who crave a deeply engrossing journey into the ancient past.
Survival, community, home, and humanity’s age-old struggle for power-
In The Exiles, we travel back to the Paleolithic era for a tale of survival, ambition, and constantly shifting power dynamics. The book’s multiple POV structure (similar to Game of Thrones) follows several MCs whose journeys are intertwined—even if they don’t yet know it.
Sira (my favorite character from the first book, Paleolithic) travels over the mountains with Harq and their small band of survivors, seeking a new home free from the volcanic ash cloud at the end of Paleolithic. They are welcomed by the Krebe tribe, though all is not as it seems with the peaceful group. Always scheming, Samaki ruler Laksha provokes the Gondo-Var, now led by "Mother" Nara, who faces her own challenges at home from the more violent (and heretofore unchecked) male warriors. Will Nara follow the advice of a shaman and senior war party leader, or will Laksha's provocation and her own bloodthirsty guard Harak lead her to repeat the violent mistakes of Gondo-Var leaders before her? Will villainous Laksha lead her people to certain death? And will Sira and Harq find peace in a new home?
Once again, SA Adams weaves an intriguing blend of history and fiction that has the reader constantly wondering “what’s going to happen next?” As with Paleolithic, I wasn’t ready for The Exiles to end. Highly recommend this one!
This 2nd book in Paleolithic series was pretty good. I took two stars away due to editing and dialogue sounding too modernistic at times.
The overall concept and faster-paced storytelling is better than some of the bigger known authors that write in this genre, such as Auel & the Gears, just to name a couple. Where their writing may be more accurate of those times of early man, they are also bogged down in the everyday minutia of prehistoric times. After you read a few books detailing how they weave, create tools, gather nuts and fruits, etc...all gets monotonous and boring to me. Any good author can skip all that, or shorten it significantly, to give readers more adventures.
And S. A. Adams does just that. Bravo!
The other nitpick is lack of adding in more prehistoric animals in these stories. There is very little, despite all the mountains and valleys they traverse. Really? No signs of insects and animals during these travels? Major missed opportunity, this!
Despite the various issues in these two books, I'm still invested in these various characters, and will read the third volume.
Where's the prehistoric fantasy books out there?! One where man and fantasy-like dinosaurs and beasts intertwine in the same world. Can't believe no authors out there haven't done this.
This is a continuation of the story, Paleothic, by S. A. Adams. We follow a prehistoric clan as they traverse a wilderness filled with many dangers.
I read the first book in this series so I knew what I was getting into with this story. The characters are well drawn as in the first book. The author has attempted to update the known world of prehistoric people using the findings reported by anthropologists in the last few decades. I felt like some scenes were over the top, including the “forbidden love” of incest. No real romance here, but I wasn’t expecting any, just maybe a little less cringy than some of the passages in the story.
I liked how the author has tried to bring together many different humans from the past, showing how they may have interacted during that time. Many of the things we have learned about early humans was brought into play here.
Editing was bit of a problem here, as with the first book, but although noticeable, none of the errors were enough to detract from the story. It’s a long book, so it took me a couple of short sittings to get through it. I was disappointed with the cliffhanger ending as it was just a set up for the next book, and I am not a fan of non-endings.

This is the 2nd book in the Paleolithic series. And from the first couple of pages I knew it was going to be one of those types of books that you think about even after you are finished reading it. Such an interesting story line that kept my attention from the start. Great characters that you love and some that you love to hate. I can't wait for the 2 nd part of Exiles to see what happens to some of my favorite characters.
