Mystified in Music City by Kristen Painter
Frost & Crowe Mystery series #3. Paranormal cozy mystery. Spin-off from the Jayne Frost series which is a spin-off from the Nocturne Falls series. Can be read as a stand-alone but better if you have read some of the Frost books, either series.
Jayne Frost and husband Sinclair Crowe are visiting another store branch, this time in Nashville. When visiting the Elvis museum, Sin ends up inhabited by a ghost of an Elvis tribute artist. As a necromancer, it might not be all that unusual, but when Sin starts singing in the shower, sounding exactly like the original Elvis, Sin and Jayne start investigating a murder in music city.

An entertaining mystery as Jayne and Sin try to solve a three year old cold case murder. They talk to people that knew the deceased and try to find clues the police could not. They rely a lot on intuition which is how most cozy stories flow. Here there is an extra twist of the dead man literally talking to Sin, but he’s lost a lot of his memories so isn’t all that helpful. Clues led me to one suspect but I was wrong until that suspenseful moment it’s all put together.
Recurring support characters include talking cats, a police dispatcher with mad skills, and lots of yummy sounding fudge and meals to make everyone drool throughout the entire book. It’s just not fair that as a winter elf, Jayne can eat, and eat and eat experience no ill effects. 🤣
A grand adventure of a new mystery to solve and friends to catch up with.

Third in the Frost and Crowe magical realism series spun off from Painter’s Nocturne Falls series and revolving around Princess Jayne Frost and Consort Sinclair Crowe. The focus is on a murder in Nashville, Tennessee.

My Take
Painter is using first person dual protagonist point-of-view from Jayne’s and Sin’s perspectives, so we “know all” that they know *grin*.

That Sin is so sweet, taking such care of his pregnant Jayne. They’re looking forward to being parents . . . and trying to enjoy the couple-time they still have. Which makes it so much harder to deal with that third wheel who possesses Sin.

Do not read Mystified in Music City if you’re on a diet, ‘cause you won’t be able to resist the idea of all these Elvis-inspired foods. Oy. The Elvis sundae at The Stillery made my mouth water. If you are an Elvis fan, you’ll probably want to plan a trip to Nashville as well.

My biggest quibble is how slow Sin and Jayne are in considering all the possible perpetrators. Okay, yeah, another quibble is that Mystified in Music City felt flat, story-wise. Oh, I still enjoyed it. That Jayne’s appetite and constant intake of Dr Pepper, okay, so she makes me jealous. I miss mainlining my Coca Cola . . . Of course I also adore the cats; they do make me laugh. That Painter must have cats of her own, lol.

Dang, Painter makes a good point about everyone in Nashville being talented.

There is a lot going on as Jayne and Sin investigate this cold case, but it’s mostly them being tourists, eating, the day-to-day of a pregnant woman, and dealing with the exhaustion of being possessed.

The Story
As part of Jayne and Sin’s royal tour, they’re driving to Nashville to visit the Santa’s Workshop. Luckily, or not, they have time to play tourist and check out all things Elvis.

If only Sin hadn’t touched Elvis’ Cadillac . . . a necromancer can only take so much.

The Characters
Jayne Frost, a winter elf, is Jack Frost’s daughter and his heir. She’s married to (and pregnant by) Sinclair “Sin” Crowe, a powerful necromancer who used to run a doughnut shop in Nocturne Falls. Sin is a big Elvis Presley fan. Spider and Sugar are Jayne’s and Sin’s talking cats. I’d, I’d kinda like to hear my cats talk . . .

Santa Claus is Jayne’s uncle Kris; his Saint Nick Slide is a magical ability Jayne inherited. Santa’s Workshops are toy stores spread throughout the US. In Nashville, Ronald Silversteen is the manager.

Aunt Zinnia is Sin’s aunt, and she’s dating Alfie Turks, a lounge singer in Las Vegas who works at a local cat rescue. Birdie, a werewolf, is the police dispatcher in Nocturne Falls who is brilliant on the computer. She’s still dating Jack Van Zant. Her nephew, Hank, is the sheriff.

Nashville, Tennessee
Chad Montgomery, a.k.a. Big Elvis, had been an Elvis tribute artist — a tribute artist is way different from an impersonator — who was murdered three years ago. The North Forty is owned by Glen Hewitt where Chad had a regular gig. Bethann Grimes, a waitress, had been Chad’s beloved. Slim Jenkins had been Chad’s agent at A1 Talent; Dolly is Slim’s receptionist. LeClaire Tillis is the president of Chad’s fan club and a music teacher who plays the piano at church and works as a session musician. Johnny Lee Dixon is an Elvis impersonator and was Chad’s closest competition.

Music City KOA is the campground where Jayne and Sin will park the RV. Shelby is the waitress at the campground’s diner.

Lucinda Knolls, a werewolf, is the chief of police in Nashville, and she’s friends with Hank Merrow, the werewolf sheriff in Nocturne Falls. Stubbs and Shipley are police officers; Detective Amet Chopra, a cobra shifter, is thrilled to finally close that cold case.

Stan is a waiter at The Stillery. Country Confections makes a Dr Pepper fudge. Red Hots is a barbecue place. Oh, I wanna eat at Mama Del’s, a fabulous sounding Italian restaurant. That Mick, a waiter there, sounds terrific. Bearnice (wonder if she’s a bear shifter . . .) is part of the audience at North Forty. Three years ago, Edna Fitzimmons had been Johnny Lee’s neighbor.

Archie Tingle is the retired winter elf who took over Sin’s bakery and Mummy’s is a diner in Nocturne Falls.

The Cover and Title
The cover has a black background framing a vague shape of Chad’s skull in all kinds of blues to pinkish white bubbles, his head arched back as he sings into the silver microphone. At the top is the series info in a deep colonial blue. The title is below that in white. At the bottom is an info blurb with the author’s name below that; both are in white.

The title is too true, for all of Nashville is Mystified in Music City.

Mystified in Music City is book 3 in the Frost & Crowe Mysteries series. This series is a spin off of the Jayne Frost series, which is a spin off of the Nocturne Falls series. All of these are great series. I usually adore these books but this one wasn’t for me. If I had to break it all down, I’d say that 50% of this book was about Jayne being pregnant, 35% was about food, and the remaining 15% was about the actual mystery. I like and appreciate how excited they are to be parents and how much Sin loves Jayne, but it got to be way over the top. I was actually getting a little disgusted with the whole overly smothering and overly sweet way Sinclair was with Jayne for the whole beginning of the book. She is pregnant, not incapable of being a regularly functioning adult. Even though it grated on my nerves, the story still contained many of the charming things that I love about these characters and their lives. The cats, Spider and Sugar, were as fun as always. We got to see a bit of interaction with Birdie over the telephone and Jayne’s mom over the snow globe, but I missed seeing more of the family and friends’ involvement. I know that is hard to do when they are traveling, but it is something I always enjoy in previous books. I really like her father, so I am bummed we didn’t get scenes with him this time. The narration was great as always. The cover surprised me a little because it was a departure from what we usually get. I guess I am just used to seeing the characters on the cover. Even though, this wasn’t what I was hoping for, I am still very excited to continue the series and see what happens after their baby is born. Jayne mentioned having an updated RV with room for a baby so they can keep traveling together, so maybe the baby will be along on future mysteries too. It will be fun to see what that looks like. I just hope that we get an equal focus on the mystery. Overall, I give this book 2.75 to 3 stars.

Series: Frost & Crowe Mystery #3
Rating: 3 stars - I liked it

Jayne and Sinclair are back in solving another mystery, this one in Nashville, Tennessee. After touching an item in the Country Music Hall of Fame Sinclair finds himself possessed by the spirit of an Elvis tribute artist, which leads them to spending their time in Nashville solving a murder mystery.

While I really enjoy Sin and Jayne and the many scraps they seem to find themselves in, this one fell a bit flat for me. I knew going into this that Jayne was pregnant but I sadly felt like this fact overshadowed the actual mystery. It felt like every other sentence was about her pregnancy, even Sinclair’s portions, and at times it felt like the mystery was getting left behind because of it. Also food is constantly being talked about or eaten in this book so be warned that you will definitely end up hungry while reading this.

The mystery in this one was slow and got buried under Sin and Jayne being tourists, eating, their pregnancy, and the exhaustion of being processed. While the murder mystery was slow and buried under everything else, I still enjoyed it. I do think Jayne and Sin were very slow in considering all the possible perpetrators though but it worked out. Overall, this was an ok mystery but a lot of Jayne and Sin being a wonderful couple and playing tourists.

2023 bk 264. Painter knocks it out of the park again. First of all, in a world in which I generally do not like chapter in alternating characters - Painter writes this format in such a deft, polished style that I always know who is speaking- and encourages me to enjoy this format. Secondly - I love the mysteries and the shenanigans the young couple and their cats are involved in with each book bringing a unique flavor and mystery. From abduction, counterfeiters, and now hard boiled detective styles there is something for all mystery lovers - and done in a cozy and paranormal format. Finally. I have to go back and make a list of the restaurants in Nashville that I have not visited yet - more joy to come. Perhaps the only things I missed about the Crowe's visit to Nashville was a tour of The Parthenon (I've always thought it would make a great chase scene in a book) and, esp for Jane - the manger scene collection at the Upper Room Publisher and Museum. Seeing the wood mosaic recreation of the last supper is cool in itself, but the collection of manger scenes from around the world is something special for Christmas. I will read this book over and over again!

This was good. I don't know if the author is planning more books, but I think this was a good ending place for me. The main characters, who I love have evolved to a life stage that isn't so much of an interest to me as what came before (being somewhat cryptic to avoid spoilers).

I really love the world the author has created is really fun and interesting and has offered lots of scope for the multiple stories she has written in it. I've enjoyed a number of them too.

The setting of this book in Nashville was a neat feature since I'm a country music fan, and getting to go along when the characters visited various museums in the city and I enjoyed that.

Overall, this just felt like a nice clean ending for a series I've really enjoyed.

This is an entertaining story that will keep you guessing until the very end. I very much enjoyed following along as Jayne and Sin worked to figure out the mystery. I do recommend reading this series from the beginning for a more enjoyable reading experience.

The Frost and Crowe books keep getting better. The books about palace life were okay and necessary, but I love these road trip mysteries. It was a clever premise and storyline that I have never read before. So many closed door mysteries are similar with slight variations. The Frost and Crowe mysteries are unique and engaging.

This book was especially awesome for me, being an Elvis fan and getting to read about things at Graceland that I haven't experienced myself. I like that the victim of the crime that they solve was polite and caring. That was also a unique spin on many mysteries. It was just a good mystery with the right amount of suspense and tension to make me dread putting it down for the night. I really hope we get more Frost and Crowe mysteries, we need to see what special abilities a mini Jayne and Sinclair might have.

What is it about this book….?

That drove me to tears as I read the ending? The short answer to that is, “Many, many, many, many different things…“ Now visualize me chuckling uncontrollably.

Despite my chuckles, there is a lot less humor in this book than we have found in previous books. That is absolutely NOT a criticism.

Much of this book revolves around Janye‘s pregnancy. And we all know that pregnant women have emotions which run the entire gamut of the emotional spectrum. Kristen must be very familiar with this, because she does such an incredible job of painting those emotions (Did anyone else catch the unintentional pan there? Lol) that we are forced to feel them right along with the characters. Perhaps “forced” is an unfair word, since I’m fairly certain we have all volunteered to be a part of this experience.

Nonetheless, as we reach the forgone conclusion to the story, I found my eyes uncontrollably welling up and tears spilling down the sides of my face. What better tribute can you give to another or a book in that type of genuine emotional reaction? And I think that fairly much sums up my review of this book, indeed.

It’s a nicely done mystery, and the villain only became clear scant pages before our heroes figured it out. Of course, I think it was a dead giveaway when the murder weapon was Sitting out in plain sight. Granted, it was only mentioned in passing, but for the astute reader it will give you a few pages Grace and a slight feeling of superiority over those who haven’t figured it out yet…

All in all a very well done job and certainly a book upon which I am very happy to have spent my hard-earned money.

ENJOY!

So if I am being honest, when I started the very first Jane Frost book it was not my favorite. But I always try the next book to see if it was just a slow starting series. I am so glad I did because Jane Frost has now became one of my favorites, This book did not disappoint. Jane and Sinclair are always stumbling into a mystery to be solved. This was a very interesting one. It was cute, but it was corky and you get quite a few chuckles. Jane and Sinclair always have interesting adventures! I love them as a couple and all the hyjinx that they get into.

Taking place a couple of months after the holiday events in Nocturne Falls, Jayne and Sinclair are now making a visit to Nashville. While they're technically there to visit the toy store and spread some goodwill, Sinclair's DELIGHTED to be spending time indulging in his love of all things Elvis (which is slightly less than his love of all things Jayne, but STILL).

As you might expect, things don't go exactly as the happy couple planned. Mostly because a restless spirit needs a little help figuring out who ended him. Seeing as how said spirit remembers very little of his last moments, Jayne and Sin have to work to piece together what happened and figure out who the guilty individual might be.

A little country music love (on Sin's part), a whole lot of food enjoyment (on Jayne's part), more than a few suspicious folks, some deep diving, some intuitive leaps, and a whole lot of Elvis impersonating. It's always fun spending time solving crime with Jayne and Sin!

I know the main character is pregnant, but in the first half of the book every other sentence was about her being pregnant. It became way too much too quickly, and honestly I sped the audiobook up over 2x speed to get through it. In a similar vein, while I appreciate that Sinclair loves his wife, it was almost overly syrupy sweet through most the book.

Also, the food. If they aren't talking about her being pregnant, they are talking about eating. Chicken salad, Dr Pepper, fudge, ice cream, the list goes on. Its was so much detail about each of their meals for a story that didn't technically have anything to do with food.

I do miss some of the quirky non-human characters, either in Nocturn Falls or their parents.

The actual mystery was ok. They never considered the actual culprit, which was odd, because it became very obvious to me there was someone not being considered. It just felt like an odd story gap.

I swear these characters used to be fun. Now Jayne is pregnant, and most of the book is talking about how she's hungry and describing everything she's eating. Sinclair does nothing but wait on her, until being possessed by the Elvis impersonator. This is a terrible "detective" story, but so little of that is worked in around Jayne's meals that it hardly matters. (I know she's a princess, but so self-centered that it is grating.)

But I've read all of the Jayne books, and I like the idea here of being in an RV and solving mysteries. There was enough of how fun they were to keep me going through this book. But I'll ponder the next one before reading.

Gotta Love a Good Ghost Story

Loved this story so much, and so did our book club. There is mystery, suspense, humor, and of course the loveable Spider (and Sugar). I don’t want to give anything away, but I will say, I won’t ever mistake an impersonator with a tribute artist again. Respect.

One thing I wish I could have seen, and that was a resolution to the situation with the dog pooping in Spider’s yard. I was really hoping for a Spider-doggie showdown.

Love all of Kristen Painter’s books I’ve read so far. If you are new to this series, they can be read as standalones, but I’d recommend reading them in order.

Always entertaining, Christmas princess Jayne Frost Crowe and her necromancer husband Sinclair Crowe stop in Nashville with their two talking cats spider and Sugar on their RV road trip.

They think it’s a routine stop to visit the family Christmas stores. Everything goes bonkers when they stop at an exhibit and Sinclair picks up a ghost that can’t leave until they solve his murder, which occurred 3 years ago.

With more twists and turns than a 5000 year old Greek labyrinth in a melodramatic tragedy, this novel has it all! Action packed and drama filled, it keeps the reader guessing until the richly satisfying ending and is an absolutely worthwhile read

Loved it!!!!!

I always try to read a Kristen Painter novel verrry sloooowllly . Mostly because I love them so much and want to make them last the longest!! Sinclair and Jane ( Mr. and Mrs. Crowe!!! ) are at it again! They are expecting a baby, and they are still touring Santa's Workshop toy stores for Jane's dad and Uncle. They are in Nashville. When Sin touches Ellie's limousine, he's drawn the spirit of an Elvis Tribute singer who was murdered into him. Its literally a race to find justice for him and save Sinclair!!!!

Jayne !!!!! I do love books about Jayne. Although this one was more Sinclairs story and experience. The setting of Nashville was interesting compared to the towns that are normally featured in supernatural books. Of course for those of us that secretly just want the series to be about the cats they make slight appearances in this one but could be more! I NEED MORE SPIDER! It will be interesting the more Jayne progresses with her pregnancy in future books as she's just starting to show in this one.

First I have to say that everyone deserves a partner like Sinclair. The characters keep being wonderful, funny and dearing.
I was surprised by the origin of the problem they had to resolve. With many twist and turns they reach the unexpected villian that caused all the problems.
Is nice to see how Jane progress during her pregnancy. Get ready to have a tour through Tennessee and Elvis Presley.
The narrators are the best.

Awesome story!

What an amazing book! There’s a murder to solve, loads of cool info about Tennessee, Elvis and the music scene in Nashville, and Jayne’s ever present appetite for lots of delicious sounding foods. Add in some fun with the talking cats and a sweet continuation of Sin and Jayne’s love story… This book had it all. And so well written that I was completely drawn in until the final words. You did it again Ms Painter! Thank you. Thank you very much.

Loved the Elvis stuff

Omgosh, this was SO good! Kristen is the best! I love this couple and it was nice seeing them pregnant. Really liked how different this was as far as the Elvis guy. Made for a nice story. It kept me engaged the entire time. We even got to hear from Birdie.

I also listened to the audiobook most of the story. If you like that sort of thing, you will love this one. The narrators are great and can do any voice. I felt like I knew the characters personally.

Great continued storytelling

Love it and I only have it at a 4 because it felt a little slower sometimes but honestly, you know what I’m loving it like that and moving back to a 5 because slower is sometimes exactly what you need in your book and the journey is such a lovely ride, you should take some time with these gorgeous things, take them in properly by going at a more leisurely pace.

Jayne and Sinclair are back again. This time visiting a Santa’s Workshop in Nashville. A chance encounter with the spirit of an Elvis tribute singer leads to all kinds of complications. I love Jayne and Sinclair’s relationship so much. This story was a delight and took me a bit to figure out who the killer was. I can’t wait to meet baby Crowe in a future book.

Great Story!

I can always judge how good a book is by how fast I rip through it. Needless to say, I practically read this all the way through in one sitting. Minus a brief sleep break. Totally engaging and well written, all I can say is, “Give me more of this series”. Kudos to Kristen Painter for knocking another one out of the park!

Yet another fun adventure with Jayne and Sin along with their delightful furry companions. I love not knowing which city they're in on their royal tour. Each city has it's own personality and Kristen really uses that to her advantage providing a unique adventure matching the setting. This one went in a direction I didn't expect and it was such a wonderful experience.

Jayne and Sinclair in Nashville! Sin and Jayne work with a deceased Elvis tribute artist to solve his murder while Jayne experiences the pregnant life! Birdie makes an appearance via phone and of course the 2 kitties are there! I’m such a big Spider and Sugar fan! A great story and a gender reveal!

Another great installment

I love these characters and was so glad to be able to enjoy a new book in the series. I really wasn't expecting some of the trusts and turns. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has read this series before. All the better to get to know Jayne and Sinclair, but don't forget Spider and Sugar! Who doesn't love taking cats!!
