It came from the forest one night. In the light of a full moon, it slaughtered seventeen people in their homes, leaving nothing but death in its path. Only one person saw its true face and survived, an eight-year-old girl named Riley found hiding underneath her bed, covered in blood, scared of a monster. Now, twenty-five years later, it’s happening again. A young girl is attacked in her home, forced to watch as her friends are slaughtered before her eyes by a monster wearing the mask of a wolf. Or at least, she prayed it was a mask. As the body count rises and the predator grows more violent, Riley is drawn back into the nightmare, forced to confront the horrifying monster she first witnessed all those years ago, surrounded by friends she cannot trust, and wolves she cannot see. A scarred survivor, a group of hunted teenagers, and a sprawling forest full of wolves are brought together in this terrifying slasher, where only one thing is known for certain. The Animal has returned, and everyone’s a suspect.
Chad Nicholas is an author who enjoys writing mysteries and thrillers. He also has a love for writing horror novels, despite the fact that he has to watch horror movies in the daytime, like a coward, or else he gets nightmares.
The author sent this book to me for an honest review. This is the third book I have read by this author and I can say with honesty that his books just get better and better. Before I continue with my review, I wanted to apologize to Chad for not getting this review out sooner. The book came out in October. I'm still trying to finish up school, however it's spring break and I read the book in 3 days while camping and I was annoyed when I had to put it down.
I want to start by reviewing the physical book. I love it when books are unique. Chad Nicholas does not disappoint in this aspect. In his acknowledgment, he thanks MiblArt for the interior artwork, formatting, and cover design. Chad did say that he worked very closely with them to get his ideas correct. Chad gave his characters "emojis". I say emoji's very loosely here. In the corner of each page for each chapter is a small image. This image coincides with the POV of the character speaking in that chapter. If you ask anyone who has been reading my reviews or following me on YouTube they will tell you that I'm kind of obsessed with chapter art and transitions in stories. I won't give away who each chapter image stands for that is the fun of reading the story, but I just love them. On the bottom of each page is a page number within a moon changing through phases. We start the story with the moon in its crescent form and end with the moon in its full form. That is ridiculously clever in my opinion. The moon changing shows the passage of time. Sometimes stories will tell us the dates or hours. This shows us time has passed by days, but through the phases of the moon which I just love.
When I talked above about how I've read three books by Chad and each time they just get better, I'm not just talking about the story within but the physical books as well. His last book Shade showed us if the story was in the past or the present by what image we saw running along the top of the pages. I can't wait to read Chad's next book.
On to the story review. What is The Animal about you ask? Well, it's a murder mystery set in a small town with a legend of a monster. Another clever feature within this book is that you get pages at the end that allow you to keep track of the characters and whether you feel they may be the killer. It's called Oliver's Journal and I thought it was such a fun and interactive way to keep the readers engaged in the story. I of course had my theories of the murders, taking notes and page numbers when I found a clue that I thought proved motives for which characters and whether they were innocent or not. It was so fun to work out my theories on paper and not just in my head like I usually do while reading murder mysteries/thrillers.
There are a handful of characters. Not too many where you will lose track. They are mostly teenagers which most of the time get on my nerves because teens can be lame, cliche, self-important, or cruel. These characters weren't whiny which was nice. I don't remember anything technology-wise that stands out that would make the story "dated" so it will be a great read for a long time.
The book has a lot of blood, so if you don't mind reading about a lot of people being slaughtered (sorry I know it sounds terrible :P) then you are going to love this book.
In a nutshell, you are helping to solve the murders that are taking place in town. Who is the killer? What is the legend? Is the town's fears valid? Oh, and this happened before. 25 years before "The Animal" killed 17 people. People are dying all over again. Has the original killer come back to haunt the town or is it a new killer? If you want to find out who or what "The Animal" is you have to pick up this book. You will be sucked in and you won't want to put it down. I was camping in the woods when I read all 625 pages. My heart raced and reading made me nervous. I didn't want to stop!
Last thing, this book is broken up into "Acts" and chapters. I love it when books are so organized.
Chad you are an amazing writer. I hope you never stop writing. This book was seriously so good and fun to read.
NOTE: I was sent an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is yet another banger from one of my new favorite authors.
Chad Nicholas has proven himself a master with his first two books, Nightmare and Shade, and he just raised the bar with this new slasher masterpiece. If you like slasher films, you will feel right at home with this one. With all the lights on and the doors locked of course.
A town was changed forever by the legend of a monster who killed 17 people, and an 18th person who survived to tell about it. Now 25 years later people are being slaughtered again, and fear that The Animal has returned is besieging the town. But only reading the book will tell you if the Animal has actually returned.
There wasn’t a moment in this book that I wasn’t transfixed by the story. I only begrudgingly stopped to eat, work, and sleep. It’s a thrill ride full of twists and turns, grisly body counts, edge of your seat pacing, and masterful storytelling.
The book is full of creative misdirection and deception, and I mean that in the best way possible. It was like a classic mystery novel in that there was no way I could figure out who was doing all this. Was it the Animal returned? Was it a copycat? I had no idea. I finally got what I thought was the final reveal, and then he flipped that on its head, and all of a sudden it was more sinister than I thought. The twists just kept on coming.
One thing that I’m really impressed with is if the author can nail the ending. And by Jove did he ever nail it…to the wall…bleeding and bloody. The ending was perfect and poetic.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves horror, thrillers, and especially slashers.
Side note: If any Hollywood studios are reading this, it would make a fantastic slasher film!
A downright bloody, gory, traumatic homicide adventure. That is full of betrayal, secrecy, and the feeling that something is watching you.
A SLASHER if ever read one! High schoolers having fun at a party when an old town terror shows up OUT OF NOWHERE and starts tearing through body after body! Some of the kids survive, but they are lucky.. last time only ONE survived. A little girl. Now that surviver will have to relive all her trauma and try to keep herself, her daughter, and the victims safe... but something just isn't adding up for her...
I LOVED this one! It was daarrrkkk and creepy. The gory imagery and the scenes in the forest are truly scary, and the amount of adrenaline I felt while reading was insanely real. There are so many moving parts, but it flowed seamlessly! I felt like I was watching a movie. This book has so many twists that I never saw coming. If you're looking for a mystery adventure, that is going to keep you guessing until the very end this one is for you.
A newly released and brutally savage story that is sure to lure you in.
We enter a cozy small-town party thrown by Kelly, whose parents are rarely present in her life. The party is happening 25 years after a brutal slaughter at the hands of a highly revered animal.
The town is obsessed with the legendary beast, forgetting all about the victims and focusing solely on the dark creature that disappeared immediately after the bloodbath.
A sole survivor has spent the last 25 years in fear, training to protect herself and her daughter if said animal should ever return. When it seems the animal has returned, she is recruited by the local sheriff to train the teens who have been targeted by the animal.
The wild twists and turns in this story kept me on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed the clever spins on familiar tropes. The pace was perfect: not too fast, lingering just long enough to allow the reader to catch their breath before diving back into the carnage.
This wasn’t my first Chad Nicolas book and it definitely won’t be my last. A spectacular read perfect for the Halloween season and beyond!
Thank you so much to Chad for a copy of this ebook in exchange for my honest review. I’m so glad I had the opportunity to read it!
The Animal has been all anyone can talk about in a small town that was hunted 25 years ago. They came from the woods and killed 17 people, and only 8 year old Riley survived. Now new murders are occurring, and it may be up to Riley to stop them.
This slasher offers plenty of kills, action, mystery, and twists. It is very cinematic and would make a great movie. After reading Chad Nicholas' other novels, Nightmare and Shade, I knew these were things that can be expected from this new book. There is a really interesting cast of characters mostly made up of teenagers that The Animal has decided to target. Riley is a super strong main character who has been traumatized by her parents death, and would do anything to protect her young daughter from the fate they met.
If you are looking for a fun twisty slasher then I highly recommend The Animal by Chad Nicholas. If you would like a taste of what this novel holds you can read the first chapter which has been published as The Animal: Party at Kelly's before buying the full book. The kindle version of this one is only $0.99 and both are available on Kindle Unlimited. However, with the beautiful chapter artwork and formatting throughout you are going to want a physical copy of The Animal.
Twenty-five years ago, a murderer was on the loose, killing several local townfolk. It could only be described as an animal, along the lines of a werewolf, by the one survivor of the massacre. Now in present time, another murderous rampage brings the same local town to its knees. Could this be the same werewolf-like creature, or a human killing machine?
My only issue with this story is the length of it. The pace could be picked up a little bit by shedding some pages. Overall, it’s a well-written horror story and I would not hesitate to read more from Nicholas.
“Instinct is how a wolf can take down an elk five times its size. It’s how animals unlock something within themselves that we’ll never understand. The power. The rage. Killing things in unnatural ways that shouldn’t be possible.”
Ok, readers beware, you might tear your hair out with this tale of terror!
We have a town with a morbid history at the centre of things; 25 years ago “The Animal” massacred 17 people in their homes and disappeared. The only survivor, a young girl named Riley, still lives there with her own daughter.
Cue a bunch of new murders starting on the anniversary of the original! Riley gets involved to see if this is the creature that killed her family and haunts her every waking/dreaming moments. Things seem… off… with the killings… so what is really going on?
Part horror, part thriller, part creature feature, & part mystery makes for an enthralling story. I was seriously almost yelling out loud “WHO KEEPS KILLING ALL THESE DANG PEOPLE?!??“
Don’t be thrown off by the page count, it’s such a fantastic read!
Years ago, a small town was terrorized by The Animal. Seventeen people lost their lives to it's cruel attacks, and the life of one little girl was changed forever. Now, the girl is a woman with a child of her own, living in the same town that now holds The Animal almost to the point of worship. The killings have begun yet again. Is this a new evil, or has The Animal returned for even more bloodshed? Leave it to Chad Nicholas to write a novel that walks the line between the slasher and werewolf genres without settling comfortably into either camp. That's not to say it's a bad or uneven novel. Far from it, in fact. That's just saying there's a lot here for fans of both genres to enjoy.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Absolutely stunning piece of work this was! Lots of background and plot twists everywhere and definitely a nice book to read as we are approaching spooky season! If Michael Myers and Ghostface adopted and raised the baby from Stephen Graham Jones’s baby from “The Only Good Indians,” it would be The Animal! Definitely a re-read for me personally due to it being so violently gritty and gorgeous!
This is a thrilling read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Absolutely excellent! Suspense, slasher, and lots of background! It was like reading a wonderful scary movie right at Halloween time. Truly enjoyable to try to figure everything out before the end! Can’t wait to dive into some of his other books!I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
"It wasn’t just this town either. It was everywhere, people obsessing over the monsters this world creates, giving them each time in the spotlight for everyone to obsess over and fascinate themselves with. It was disgusting, and they knew it, but they did it anyway, because why not?"
Ever since I read this book I cannot stop thinking about it. I do still believe this book is a four star read because the length had certain parts dragging but I still really loved this book. There was commentary, there were great kills, there was emotion. Chad Nicholas has a fan in me, and I cannot wait to read more from him. There were parts of this story that had me in tears. The ending was utterly shocking, I did not see that one coming from a mile away. The kills and gore, mostly on teenagers, so this book does not stray away from that. To top it off there are beautiful moments woven in the pages of this book like the one in the beginning go my review. I absolutely adored the commentary on how we as a society memorialize and fetishize serial killers and often times the victims are overlooked. If you like horror novels and were a fan of Bright Young Women by Jessica Knoll, I think this is the one for you.
This was the first novel I read by this author, and boy was it a thriller. From start to finish, this horror, slasher, edge of your seat thrill ride takes you to the depths of your trust of people. From start to finish, I never knew what was coming next, and the ending was a huge surprise. A fan of wolves, I enjoyed the premise of this book and the way the author wove wolves into the tale. A white knuckle read that will keep you up at night wondering what is really out there, and what kind of monsters roam our world. A fantastic read I highly recommend, and I'm reading more by this author and hope he continues Riley's story at some point. Adventure, mystery, love, loss, horror and slashing all mixed into a book I could'nt put down. 5 stars, but I'd rate it 100. Definitely a book for horror and mystery lovers, I will put this author on my TBR pile. Read this book. It will keep you up at night.
Having been a fan of Chad Nicholas and his imagination, I couldn't wait to read this novel. It did take me awhile to get to it but having finished it, I can honestly say this is the best thing I have read from, so far. This is a horror novel and has been described as a slasher story but to me it's more a monster story, with elements of slasher. Chad is also a master of twists and turns, so never take anything for granted in his novels, he will surprise you.
This story is about a legendary creature that attacked and killed numerous victims twenty five years ago and has become a popular figure within the town. Even the victims have been forgotten. All but the only survivor Riley, who witnessed the death of her parents by the monster. But, the monster is back and is attacking Kelly and her friends. Can Riley save them and uncover the truth about the monster and what happened all those years ago.
Highly recommend this to all horror fans. Read it! Just read it!
What a tremendous horror book! The novel kicks off with horrific murders and they don't stop until the end. The author does a solid job of building suspense and a feeling of dread throughout. I had a hunch on where the story was going to go but I was only partially correct, the last 100 pages had me on a rollercoaster of plot twists. While this is a horror novel with lots of gore, it also was surprisingly touching. There was some interesting commentary around trauma responses/overcoming trauma and the character building was really solidly done.
This book was brought to my attention through an ad on Facebook. The synopsis sounded awesome, so I thought I’d give it a chance. And I was not disappointed. I believe in the synopsis, it was mentioned that this was like a slasher horror movie and that’s exactly how I read it and felt while reading it. The gore scenes were well done and the twist got me good. I thought the bad guy was somebody else and was completely thrown. The Animal itself was terrifying. This book kept me glued until the end. Awesome job. Keep up the great work!
The Animal by Chad Nicholas is an intense slasher horror novel that I highly recommend.
This book is very refreshing in that the author did not add fluff or filler. Every sentence had a purpose, and only the level of detail needed was given.
The antagonist was shapeless, creepy, and daunting, which added a mystique that heightened the tension.
The Animal literally caused insomnia for me, as I kept saying 'just one more chapter’, even hours past my bedtime.
I don’t like slasher books or movies, but The Animal is a different breed. It’s twists and turns are so breathtaking and the characters so real that I could not put the story down.
This is not my usual taste in books but I love the author so I gave this one a try. The plot twists were good and the book kept me wanting to keep reading nonstop. I look forward to reading more by this author.
I absolutely loved this book. I hated having to put it down for anything. It was full of plot twists and unanswered questions until the last part when it all comes together in an amazing finish!
I thought this was a really good book! Great mystery / horror, I love being surprised and this book did that. There is a lot of death though so be warned lol.
Very interesting. Had to force myself to put it down. I was able to figure out who the killers were, but it was still an interesting read and has a happy ending. Loved that aspect.
