After completing a psychology degree, Alice Hunter became an interventions facilitator in a prison. There, she was part of a team offering rehabilitation programmes to men serving sentences for a wide range of offences, often working with prisoners who'd committed serious violent crimes. Previously, Alice had been a nurse, working in the NHS. She now puts her experiences to good use in fiction. The Serial Killer’s Wife, The Serial Killer’s Daughter and The Serial Killer’s Sister all draw heavily on her knowledge of psychology and the criminal mind.
Am in a quandary of what to rate Bad Apple by Alice Hunter narrated by Catrin Walker Booth 3 stars 🌟 I loved this book it was chilling, unnerving & compelling police procedural the pace was right up there & the characters kept me invested but the ending was a hit & miss for me I loved the character of Becky who fought to the end she was a ballsy cop who wanted justice & wouldn’t stop until the bitter end!
TRUSTED OFFICER - Family Man … but he has a devious alter ego he is a MONSTER RAPIST!!!
Becky can’t believe her husband John a police officer in Salford will get away with it again, she tried & failed the first time in giving evidence against John who raped multiple women years earlier but due to his stellar career the charges were dropped.
Becky thinks of a plan to get him this time for good with the help of her former colleagues Charlie & Hannah she hatches a plan to put him away but you see John is a master of covering his tracks, now John is married again to Nina they have a child together which makes it all the more important that former police officer Becky do what she can so this doesn’t happen again.
There are a lot of twists & turns in this novel that I did not see coming but as I said earlier the ending had me in a had good half bad sort of felling it’s hard to describe my thoughts on this one.

Becky used to be a respected police officer. Now, she has lost her job, her home, her life and even her marriage to the man she loved. Becky reported her husband, John, for a a heinous crime. Did it matter? No, he’s still on the police force.
Becky will stop at nothing to find more incriminating evidence to bring John to Justice. She is disgusted with what she has discovered. She can’t even believe she was clueless for five whole years. She loved this man.
She asks her old coworkers and friends to help her seek justice. Hannah and Charlie are a little reluctant. However, with their assistance, they just might get somewhere.
I found this suspenseful but also a bit repetitive. I found myself skimming through Becky’s thoughts and actions. Not as fast paced as I wished.
I’d like to thank Avon books for the opportunity. There are other raving reviews so please read those as well. All opinions are my own. Publication date May 9, 2024 3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
This book was my entertainment on a lazy Sunday at home. Once I picked it up there was no stopping me. A tense, fast read that I thought that ai had figured out.. of course I was wrong 😅
I have read and enjoyed Alice Hunter books before so I knew that it would be a twisty and shocking story. I loved the premise of a wife turning in her policeman husband when she discovers that he is not the man she thought he was. John was a psychopath and would stop at nothing to keep his secret. I loved that Becky wouldn’t give up in order to save other women from her ex husbands torture. She was frustrating at the same time though, seemingly doing things before she really thought it through.
The ending shocked me, as I said, I thought I knew how it was going to end. Very clever.
Thanks to Avon Books UK for my advanced copy of this book to read. Publishes on May 9th.
A difficult subject well written, so please read the trigger warnings as it will be a hard read for some. Beckys life is in tatters when she finds out her fellow police officer husband John is a serial rapist. She reports him, but he is corrupt and alongside others destroys the evidence path leading to him. She is forced out of her job, loses her police friends, and is down on her luck living in a grotty flat but determined to bring John to justice. She finds out he is being promoted and living with another woman and their child, which is especially painful for Becky. John is as you would think a horrible chracter, but somehow, I just didn't seem to connect with Becky. It's a well written, psychological, domestic thriller. A few twists and turns kept me reading, I would have enjoyed it more if I had a better connection with Becky, but I was still rooting for her to bring John down. It's an enjoyable read with a difficult subject that may be triggering.
Becky is a divorcee who lives by herself. She rents a flat in a less than safe neighbourhood, because that’s all she can afford. She used to be a policewoman, married to a prominent policeman, John Lawson.
However, she discovered that her husband was a monster, a “bad apple”, so she reported him. No charges were ever brought forward, and imagine Becky’s shock when she discovers that John is up for promotion.
What’s worse, she finds out that John is seeing someone new, and that she has a daughter. Becky vows to bring John down now more than ever. She has to protect the innocent women who may fall into trap…
I am a big fan of Alice Hunter’s writing, but this book has left me feeling a bit flat.
There were parts that I enjoyed, like the dual timeline as I was desperate to discover what really happened.
Someone was really messing with Becky’s head, she started forgetting things and she couldn’t really trust anyone.
I don’t know what I was expecting, maybe a bit more comeuppance for John? I am not sure, but as I was reading I was thinking “Is that all there is?”.
I felt a little let down by this standalone thriller from the author who's created a buzz with 'The Serial Killer's Wife'.
The premise sounded intriguing despite plenty of triggers of rape and abuse.
The narrative follows Becky, a former police officer who discoverers that her husband John - also a policeman was a monster. Despite trying to report him, the system doesn't lead to any consequences. Becky is determined to get justice and plans to hunt him down.
I quite like Becky and the then and now timelines kept the novel moving at a brisk pace. As some of Becky's actions were unbelievable and at time felt repetitive, it just seemed to lack that spark.
“Bad apple” is my first Alice Hunter book that caught my eye due to the comparison to the hit NETFLIX series YOU.
The plot follows our beloved FMC Becky who discovers her detective husband is a dirty cop with many unforgivable crimes against his name, Becky’s attempts in seeking justice result in her being fired from her job and a series of obstacles she finds herself having to overcome.
The chapters rotate between events leading up to her firing and events following. I personally liked the FMC and rooted for her to succeed.
I’d say the writing maintains a medium pace throughout, the chapters are easy to get through and follow along.
Overall I enjoyed this book and would be open to reading more by this author.
Trigger warnings: Abuse of authoritative power. Sexual harassment / SA (non graphic).
Thank you to Alice Hunter, Avon books UK and Netgalley for the EARC.
I stopped reading this about half way through because life is too short for rubbish books. This was incredibly boring and I wish I hadn’t wasted the money.
Bad Apple has an interesting narrative that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. Becky’s husband John a detective, is described by his work colleagues as a trusted officer and a family man. But appearances can be deceptive, as Becky knows only too well. He’s a monster who has committed the most hideous crimes against woman. Becky reported him to the authorities, but the lack of evidence and his ‘powerful connections’ shielded him from facing charges. Determined for justice, Becky hunts him down. But John wants her silenced at any cost. Becky knows only one of them can survive, and she’ll do anything to make sure it’s her. Sadly, the theme is one that we often see or hear about on the news corrupt and predatory police officers using their power to prey on the vulnerable.
Alice Hunter effectively portrays Becky as the ‘mad, psycho, mental’ ex-wife, leaving you unsure if John is behind certain events or if it’s Becky’s vivid imagination playing tricks on her. I must admit even I wondered how reliable she was as a narrator! Nevertheless, she is a captivating protagonist, and the supporting characters add depth and complexity to the story. Paranoia and distrust become intertwined, so you are never entirely sure who to trust. The plot moves between the now and then where the reader gradually learns more about the horrific crimes John committed. The chapters are clearly marked, so there’s no confusion. I flew through this book as Alice Hunter’s intricate plot weaves together suspense and mystery.
Because this was the first book I’ve read of hers I had nothing to compare it to but because I found that enjoyed reading it I will definitely give her other books a read
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
"Bad Apple" follows Becky, who discovered that her cop husband has committed an atrocious crime and when she reports him to the authorities, they turn a blind eye. Instead, her life begins to fall apart while he moves on with his life as if nothing ever happened. Becky decides that to get justice she must take things into her own hands.
The book does tackle some difficult topics so TW for SA and cops abusing their power. Now, this book is written nicely... however, I did find it began to get a bit repetitive at times. It is a quick paced book so easy to read within an afternoon. Just keep in mind that there is less showing and a lot of telling within the book which got frustrating at times.
While reading it though, the plot felt quite unrealistic. I understand it's a book however most of the time there has to be some element of how the world actually works within it.
Maybe this book was just not for me, but I was quite disappointed since the premise had so much potential.
This was a really quick and easy to read thriller. The blurb was super intriguing and I’d previously loved other books by this author. I was left frowning through bits of this book and found I’ve been left with a few plot holes and numerous questions. The characters were okay, but I found quite a few of their characteristic descriptions repetitive and stereotypical. If thrillers aren’t your usual go-to then I think you could read and enjoy this wholeheartedly, but as someone who reads thrillers and police procedurals a lot, I was left a bit disappointed. I will continue to read more from this author however, but just chalk that this one missed the mark for me.
This is a great thriller. Becky is trying to pick her life back up after finding out her husband is a rapist. She reports him but his felllow Police officers stick with him and cover for him. Becky was also with the Police, but is quickly dismissed as a liar. She finds herself in a tiny flat in a dodgy area but is determined to make people believe her about John. Some of her activities are a bit far fetched but I did feel for her going up against a well respected Police officer. This is a great read. Thanks to Avon Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Absolutely loved the storyline, it was intense almost the whole time! A little bit disappointed by the ending, they wrapped it up quickly and I was hoping for more twists and turns.
I've enjoyed all of Alice's books so far and this one was no exception. She certainly knows how to write unlikable male characters! John was utterly horrible. I was captivated by the story and was rooting for Becky the whole time. I guess the ending could be considered as predictable, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The writing was easy to follow and read and the pace felt thick and fast at the right moments. Highly recommended for domestic thriller and psychological thriller lovers.

When Becky learns that her cop husband is a rapist she quickly turns him in. Unfortunately, it's a case of "protecting their own," and she is the one who looses everything. Vengeance is a dish best served cold though and a year later, Becky is still at it. Putting together the pieces to prove his guilt. Regrettably, he is not the only bad apple on the force.
My Thoughts
I'm not sure how I felt about this book. It was well written. The characters were engaging and fleshed out. The storyline moves at a reasonable pace. I finished it in a day. Yet there is something on the tip of my tongue I just didn't like about it. I was bored with the story. It felt like a "defund the police" puff peice. I rolled my eyes more times than I could count.
I found a lot of the plot unbelievable. She is a cop and yet her claim that her husband is a rapist holds no weight? He rapes multiple women who ALL come forward, yet none are believed because of lack of evidence? Her entire career is over, and she is disgraced because she accused a fellow officer? Their are laws protecting out criers. It is a well woven tale, but it feels far-fetched.
Becky is kick ass. She is strong, determined, and thier for the people in her life. I liked her immensely. She is a little single focused, but that is to be expected. All in all, she was a mighty good MC POV.
Thank you, NetGalley, for the free ACR for review. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Becky finds evidence that her husband is a vile person. But justice didn't prevail. John was given a promotion. Becky was kicked from the force. Becky's strong charatraits meant she wouldn't take this lying down. And so results in a quest to out her now ex-husband John. But, will it be plain sailing? Will there be bent cops in the way? And will she get and keep the evidence she needs.
Perfectly paced. This story kept me engaged throughout the narrative. We are told the story mainly from Beckys POV. Interspersed within are a few chapters from differing characters who give us the reader a hint of unease. Is Becky a reliable narrator?
I had so many theories whilst reading this story. As is the case with psychological thrillers, there are a few twists and turns along the way. Some I figured, and some just smacked me in the face to be made to look a fool. How didn't I see some of these twists?
Anyway, Bad Apple was a good pacy read. Kept me engaged.
"Bad Apple" by Alice Hunter is a gripping and suspenseful thriller that had me hooked from the very first page. Becky's journey to uncover the truth about her husband's dark secrets is both compelling and heart-wrenching. As she navigates a world filled with betrayal and deceit, I found myself rooting for her every step of the way. The pacing is perfect, keeping me on the edge of my seat as I followed Becky's relentless pursuit of justice. Hunter's writing is sharp and engaging, drawing me deeper into the story with each twist and turn. While I appreciated the timely and thought-provoking premise, I felt slightly let down by the ending but that won’t stop me from wanting to read more by the author in the future. "Bad Apple" is a thrilling and addictive read that I recommend to fans of psychological thrillers.
Very grateful to the publisher for my copy, opinions are my own.
What do you do when the people meant to protect you are the ones breaking the law? When Becky Lawson finds a burner phone and messages that implicate her husband in a series of rapes, she blows the whistle. Unfortunately a lack of evidence means there’s nothing to support her claims and she ends up leaving the force. But she’s not given up. When, some time later, she receives news of her ex’s upcoming promotion she decides it’s time to try again. She enlists the (begrudging) help of a couple of ex-colleagues and tries to reach out to her ex’s new partner. Things don’t go quite to plan and it seems his reach is further than she ever thought possible. The story might seem improbable, but the topic is one that you can’t help but be caught up in. There’s a few surprises in store, and not everything is neatly resolved by the end, but there’s enough to keep you satisfied that some elements of the story are tied up. Thanks to NetGalley for giving me the chance to read and review this.
*Bad Apple* by Alice Hunter is a suspense-filled thriller that captivates from the very start. Hunter's writing is sharp & engaging, drawing readers into the seemingly perfect life of Becky. Her world is turned upside down when she discovers her husband’s burner phone, & with that discovery, the suspense truly begins.
The novel is packed with an interesting cast of characters, each adding depth & intrigue to the unfolding drama. Hunter expertly weaves a story full of twists & turns, keeping readers on their toes. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, another twist would come along, making it impossible to put the book down.
This is a highly recommended read for fans of suspenseful thrillers. Thank you to #NetGalley, #BadApple, #AliceHunter #AvonBooksUK for providing this ARC. All expressed opinions are my own and given voluntarily.
A year after being fired for reporting her husband as a rapist, Becky decides not to give up and continue investigating….
The story is told in “now” and “then” chapters but the “then” chapters dry up so fast, we barely know what happened
I struggled to understand husband John‘s motivation or personality. He just felt like this unseen omnipresent bad man… it felt weird and at times I wondered if it was all in Becky’s head
After a year, Becky doesn’t seem to have learnt or grown much. Her friends are awful and I struggled to understand their relationship. They didn’t initially support her and when she pushed, they behaved so sketch
What was a good premise, by an author I’ve previously liked, turned out to be a super slow burn with a disconnected plot
It was repetitive, everyone was unlikable and I struggled to understand the motivation behind anything
I wasn’t surprised by the twist, though I did like the epilogue… I think we needed other POVs, way more flashbacks and a clear motive… #notforme
Bad apple is about Becky, who has pretty much lost everything after coming forward to the police department. Where she works with John, her husband, who is a policeman. He is abusing his power doing the unthinkable to other women. Becky will do whatever it takes to make sure John pays for what he's done. But John will not make it easy for her. The books synopsis got my attention, but this book just seemed a bit repetitive and slow for my liking. I did enjoy how Becky wasn't going to be silenced and did what she could to help the victims get the justice they deserved.
Thank you, Netgalley, and the publisher for a copy of this book.
Loved that someone was trying to get revenge for others. Frustrated it turned out how it did. But that being said this was such a great book to dig yourself deep into. The story held my attention from the very beginning.
Thanks to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for an early release of this book.
Thank you for the advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review
I enjoyed reading this book. The main character Rebecca stayed true to her beliefs, and still tried to continue with what she’d started while on the force, while trying to figure out who she could trust.
I found this book enjoyable, but overall, it felt quite average. The premise is interesting: Becky loses her job and her life unravels after reporting her husband—who is also a police officer—for being a serial rapist. Determined to take him down and seek justice for his victims, she faces challenges from the corruption within the police force.
While the story started strong, it felt repetitive at times and seemed to stall in places. That said, I was invested enough to keep reading, curious to see how it would all unfold. It was interesting questioning the reliability of the narrator, which added an extra layer of intrigue. I mostly liked Becky as the main character, but I felt her character lacked depth and could have been more fully realized. As for the twist, it didn’t surprise me—I had a sense of where things were heading—but I still appreciated learning the reasoning behind it.
