DNF.

I love a fun, evil parent, but Celeste is just too much. Too evil, too snobbish, too manipulative and, sadly, too realistic. Plus the heroine seems to be something of an idiot.

It's me not you. Maybe later.

I inhaled this book, I loved Sera and Harry, the small town of Papillon, and the transformation of a bitter woman.

When Harry and Sera meet for the first time you can tell there were sparks but it took a while for the flame to build, which I loved watching. This story was one of secrets, patience, friendship, love, growth, and forgiveness. I loved that this story had much more of the small town feel than the first book did and Otis is always a fun addition. In addition to the Romance between Sera and Harry we have the feud between Celeste and Sera which in all honesty is a major point of this story. Celeste detests Sera and considers her beneath her which is why she hated when her son Wes was friends with Sera and blamed Sera for Wes joining the Army, which is where he was killed by an IED.

Listened on Audible.

I like Lexi Blake though I have a tough time outside of her Masters and Mercenaries type series but this was included with my Audible subscription so I gave it a go. After some initial teething with the Southern accent from the narrator, Jessica Almasy (which was fine after a bit) I settled in.

This is the story of Serafina (aka Sera), a youngish single mother who has an ongoing feud of sorts with her dead friend's mother. Her friend, Wes, had been in love with her for ages and the family believed (or at least his mother) that Wes took himself off to the army on Sera's order to "become a man". Where he promptly got killed. Wes's feelings weren't reciprocated by Sera but after a drunken night whereafter they did argue (and he ran off to the military) she found out she was pregnant. He died when she was only 4 months pregnant so she never had a chance to tell him and then, for a variety of reasons, chose not to tell his parents. However, they blame her absolutely for his death.

There is quite a back story going on but Harry, Wes's cousin, arrives in town. He is a bit of a drifter and also a veteran (he lost a leg when he served) and there is plenty of chemistry between the two. They do eventually embark on a relationship and it eventually comes to light that Wes is the father of her child and then all hell breaks loose. Because Wes's mother is awful and everything that Sera thought would happen if she ever found out about the child, begins to happen. And in the process, she and Harry are torn apart.

I have to say, there was a lot of small town politics, prejudices and for quite some time it felt like I was reading a story about a bunch of completely brainless twats. But as the story evolved, it becomes more obvious that so many people are just playing a part, a part they are expected to play to keep the order of things. And there was a lot going on, though it didn't necessarily feel like it as I read (as in it wasn't hard to keep track, but as I reflect, there was so much that happened its too much to put into a review).

I liked the development of feelings between Harry and Sera but what was most interesting was that we also got Celeste's (Wes's mother) perspective and watching her growth from grief-stricken parent and widow, through to how she feels about running her late husband's business and how she became the awful person she was, was actually one of the most interesting parts of the book. It wasn't huge but it really added to the story. And as an aside, there is some less that subtle social commentary about women's place in that particular society as well as expectations placed on family.

This was actually a pretty good story. It was a lot weightier than the cover suggests and generally engrossing. The steam factor here is pretty low (I think maybe one sex scene other than some kissing) but it works in the context of the story.

So on the whole, as surprisingly good find from Lexi Blake - just dont expect whips and cuffs in this one!

I'm definitely on to the next book in the series.

LOVED it!!!! I honestly bought this book on a whim because I loved the dog on the front and it seemed homey. Who knew a story set in small town Louisiana packed such a punch. It was a page turner, I couldn't put down. It's a guaranteed heart grabber so be sure to have the Kleenex ready, tears will flow. There was so much I loved about this story. Sera, who eventually came into her own, full of sass and determination. Harry, sigh, was simply wonderfully awesome. Sera's quirky fun family. And, of course, Shep, Harry's German Shepherd. But it's the complex wealthy Beaumont family that twist and turn this story like a well loved soap opera. One with a very happily ever after for Sera/Harry.

This happens to be book 2 of the series. Going back to read book 1 now. Fingers crossed it's just as good.

Bayou Baby is the second book in the Butterfly Bayou series by Lexi Blake. Each story is stand-alone and some of the characters might be familiar from the first book. I liked the first book, so I was eagerly waiting for this one and in the end, I was a little disappointed.

What bothered me the most is that this book felt more like Seraphina and Celeste's book rather than Seraphina and Harry's. I could have sworn that we got more chapters from Celeste's point of view rather than his. Heck, I even felt like Harry's dog got to interact more than him with Luc, Seraphina's son.

Seraphina and Harry were both great characters with strengths and weaknesses. They might not be perfect, but there was something about them that couldn't make me dislike their actions. Harry caused a lot of trouble but it really was accidental and he thought that he was doing something right. Seraphina stood her ground for so many years and she is a devoted mother and I couldn't ask for anything more. Celeste is the most complex character and to be frank her journey was not the most convincing. The change in her character was too rushed in my opinion.

Zep's book is next and I cannot wait for it. We have been teased about him and Roxie since the first book and soon it will be time to see this player getting tamed. The secondary characters are one of the book's strongest selling points. I liked Seraphina's family and Harry's cousins and I hope they will get a happy ending too.

Bayou Baby was not the book I was expecting to read, but on the other hand, it wasn't bad either, so I will remain neutral on the recommendation.

4.5 stars!

I'm totally in love with this small town series and could not wait to revisit Papillion, Louisiana. Found within the pages of Lexi Blake's Bayou Baby is a heartwarming, moving story with all the feels. Sizzling passion, angst, scandal, relationship drama, an adorable little boy, a German Shepard that occasionally stole the spotlight, and a cast of memorable characters - captivated me from beginning to end. There's so much goodness to savor when a sassy, down on her luck single mom, Seraphina Guidry, falls for the ex-military hottie, Harrison Jeffreys. Sparks fly when this couple comes together in this eloquently written romance.

Facing many challenges while raising a toddler on her own, Sera's life is riddled with complications, including the inability to hold a steady job. Her luck begins to change when she finds herself the beneficiary of her late aunt's historic mansion and a small inheritance only to be used towards the repairs. To save Sera time and money, the sexy out-of-towner Harrison, a relative of Butterfly Bayou's wealthiest family, offered to lend her a hand. With an awkward beginning and a bumpy road towards love, this couple's experiences truly touched my heart.

What I adored most about Sera was her spirit. Regardless of her difficult circumstances, and bearing the brunt of Harry's wicked aunt's ire, this heroine managed to persevere. Throughout this read, she carried a tremendous amount of responsibility, secrets, and guilt. I admired Sera's courage in taking a faithful leap, opening her heart and life to Harry. There's were times his actions created more complications for poor Sera, but in the end, he was an enormous source strength and her perfect soulmate.

I immediately fell for big-hearted ex-army soldier turned handyman, Harrison. He's a drifter, a traveling man of sorts, who's temporarily in town to help with and attend his cousin's wedding. Meeting Sera was an unexpected game-changer - turning his world upside down while giving him the hope to settle and become a part of her family. However, there were so many obstacles for this couple to overcome. Secrets from the past, misunderstandings, and hurt feelings between Sera and his family, added loads of drama into this storyline, which had me on edge. There were times Harry's stubbornness frustrated me, but all in all, I adored this gentle hero for the way he loved Sera and the relationship he developed with her son Luc.

Another fantastic sexy yet emotional romance from Blake that I highly enjoyed and looking forward to the next installment Bayou Dreaming.

Dnf. Audible free listen. I tried but I couldn’t keep track of all of the characters and how they were related to each other. I didn’t realise this was the second in the series, although it’s supposed to be a standalone, I think I missed too much character history to get into this one. Ah well.

I find my self just loving this small town that Lexi Blake has created. All the characters, the quirky things, and the couples she matches up. It just all works and works really well. I'm from a small town myself so I can relate to what I see happening.

Sera was such a great heroine. I liked how the author showed that even beautiful people don't have it easy. I felt outraged on Sera's behalf with some of the judgments and misinformation that was spread about her. She handled it way better than I ever would have. That made me like her even more. She just handled things with grace.

Harry was just as great. He's also one of the beautiful people but also with a rarely seen beauty from the inside. He wasn't an arrogant man most good looking men portray. He was humble, respectful and just all around nice guy. Plus he had an awesome German Sheppard.

Great book, and so far great series!

I inhaled this book, I loved Sera and Harry, the small town of Papillon, and the transformation of a bitter woman.

Seraphina has lived in Papillon her entire life and as a young single mother who refuses to name the father of her child the people in the small town think the worst of her. This makes things difficult for her but when her great-aunt passes and leaves her her beloved home Sera believes she can fix it up and sell it so she is able to move and make a fresh start for her and her son.

Harrison Jerfferys is in town to help his Aunt Celeste with his cousins wedding. He spent years in the Army and now that both of his parents have passed he is looking forward to reconnecting with his mothers side of the family in the beautiful small town. Harry

If you enjoy Small Town Romances, Military Romances, Single Mom Romances, or are just looking for a good read I would definitely recommend this book to you.

Happy Reading!!!

These books are absolutely fantastic! I love this little parish in LA and all the people in it.

I honestly didn't think I was going to like the story of Sera because I really didn't connect with her in the first book but she really shined in this one! Her and Harry were the perfect love story!

I can't wait for Zep's book next!

I am not really in the mood to read contemporary right now and have been re-reading all my paranormal books (please publish more!!), but I love Lexi Blake, so I wanted to give Bayou Baby a go.
It was a solid, one-sitting read. My biggest struggle was that the romance didn't feel like the core of the story, but more like an aside. The main focus was on this inter-generational relationship between Seraphina and Celeste.
I enjoyed Celeste's journey of finding herself, but both Seraphina and the love interest Harrison seemed to be static and did not grow throughout the book. The black moment in the romance seemed more grey and the steamy chemistry I'm used to from Lexi's books was mostly missing. There were sparks (fun banter), but not what I was looking for.
If you're looking for a contemporary romance that leans more towards women's fiction this is the book for you.
Thank you to Berkley and Netgally for the ARC.

Another good story in this series. Was a little disappointed that we didn't catch up with more of the previous characters, Armie & Lila and especially to find out how Armie's daughter was doing in her struggle to learn to walk again.

Once again, well read by Jessica Almasy.

Seraphina Guidry is more than a little shocked when her Great-Aunt Irene leaves her the rundown home that has been in the family a long time and money to help fix it up. Sera was always kind to her aunt who definitely gave off the “cold pricklies”.
Sera is a single mom with a young son to consider. The task of restoring the house seems more than daunting until she meets Harrison Jeffreys.

He volunteers to help her as much as possible.

Harry is part of the richest family in the small town of Papillion, near New Orleans. Harry spent several years in the Army and lost a leg, but he wants to spend time with his Aunt Celeste and cousins and start a new phase of life.

Harry is attracted to Sera right away, but she doesn’t want a relationship. The two of them start working together on the house and form a bond. Can Harry win Sera over or will the past from both families stand in the way of happiness?

I love that author Lexie Blake made Harry a wounded warrior. Too often, in real life and fiction, the hero is supposed to have a perfect body. This story goes beyond the shallow view of things.Sera has made mistakes and kept secrets, but she is loyal and loving. Her family has some real “characters”, but they all support each other. Celeste starts out as a woman you love to hate, cold and critical. Her past is slowly revealed and the reader sees there is hope for her, despite all she has said and done.

Although Bayou Baby is a romance at heart, it is also a wonderful and charming story of family in many forms. The cover is very sweet and colorful. The dog pictured on the front matches the description of Shep, Harry’s faithful companion.

Bayou Baby is the second in a series, but I had no trouble reading it on its own. I look forward to another novel in this series.

If you follow me then you know that I really enjoyed the first book in the #ButterflyBayou series. I couldn't wait for this one and when I started it I was all in. Then I met Celeste and she was enough to make me not want to go on. I really can't stand the women.

I really loved both Sera and Harry. They are so perfect together right from the start. Most often I go with love at first sight in a book because who am I to judge, but I don't often believe it. With these two I did. They just seemed to work. You heard wedding bells as these two first meet.

I felt for Harry that he couldn't see what his aunt was like until it was almost too late. But sometimes we have to have it shoved in our faces before we believe. In the end, he did.

Celeste's hatred for Sera is out of this world. She never had a reason to dislike her but couldn't see that. Sera is so sweet and caring about everyone and lived for so long with the fear that Celeste could ruin her life.

I loved how her family and Wesley's brother and sister tried to stand for her too. Thankfully she had people at her back.

These two might have had a hard road to travel to be able to show their love openly but when it all came down to it and they got their heads on straight they found the perfect medium and worked through their issues.

I might have almost put this story down because I couldn't deal with the nastiness but I'm so happy I pushed on. I ended up crying at the end and was so happy. Now I can't wait for Zep's story. Talk about a character. His book will be something.

Overall really liked Harry and Sera and spending time with the Guidrys again. Minor complaints about the progression of the Celeste plot and the amount of drama at the end, but I enjoyed this one as an entry point into this series (book one is annoyingly difficult to get my hands on, although I've got it on hold).

Amazing! The Butterfly Bayou series is absolutely amazing!

Lexi Blake is a genius storyteller. This series is one of her finest. Bayou Baby is the second book in Ms. Blake's Butterfly Bayou series. The characters make me want to get to know them in person. Lexi Blake did an extraordinary job of redeeming the character I greatly disliked at first. I am very impressed with that feat! The storyline flows beautifully and is filled with emotion and some great family dynamics as well as a very dysfunctional family. This book had me turning the pages quickly to see what was going to happen next. Then again I was so happy in Papillion, Louisiana I didn't want the story to end, meaning my stay there would be over. I am really really looking forward to the next book in this series, Bayou Dreaming.

Although this is the second book in the Butterfly Bayou series, it is definitely a standalone story. I really enjoyed learning about Serafina (Sera) and Harry, their pasts and families as well as how they settle in to Papillon, Louisiana. Sera needs to fix up her aunt's house that has been left to her. She needs to use all money in the estate to renovate the old house. She then needs to decide if she will sell it, or open a B&B. Harry is a big-hearted ex-army soldier turned handyman. He's a drifter who's temporarily in town to help with and attend his cousin's wedding. He meets Sera and offers to work for her, with the hope of getting to know her better. He is also the nephew of Celeste Beaumont, the grandmother of Sera's child. Of course, Celeste does not know who the father is and has no idea that Luc is her grandchild. Celeste detests Sera and considers her beneath her which is why she hated it when her son Wes was friends with Sera. She blames Sera for Wes joining the Army, which is where he was killed by an IED. Harry and Sera are attracted to one another and there are definitely sparks. This was not insta-love, it took some time for them to actually act upon those sparks, but they began to feel deeply for one another. What happens when secrets come out?

This story was one of secrets, patience, friendship, love, growth, and forgiveness. I loved the small town feel in this story and getting to know Sera's family. They have all had problems in the past and carry some baggage, but they are a quirky, loving and caring group. Sera is a great character who comes into her own and doesn't take anything from anyone. She is a strong woman who has to take a leap of faith when it comes to Harry. Harry is definitely a swoon-worthy character who is willing to do whatever it takes to have a life with Sera. There was some humour, think Otis the alligator who stops traffic, a wonderful dog, Shep who helps bring this couple together, a sweet toddler that everyone loves, and some realizations and self-reflections from a few characters that enable them to move forward and forgive each other. The narration by Jessica Almasy was done well. She gave the various characters their own voices and used her tone, expression and inflection to make the story come alive. She also narrated the first book in this series and I hope you continues to be the voice in the next ones. If you enjoy a small-town, southern romance, especially one where a single parent finds their soulmate, then make sure you pick this one up and enjoy your visit to Papillon, Louisiana.

This one went much better than I expected. I really disliked Celeste at the start, hated how she looked down on everyone, including her own children. So seeing that she hated Sera wasn't a big surprise, but the lengths to which Celeste went to sabotage her made me want to stab her in the eye. Sera was nice, a great mom, sister, daughter and friend to her son, was just trying to live her life.

Harry was interesting. I thought Celeste would treat him more like the "help" than a family member, especially when Harry represented all that she left behind basically without a glance. Now Harry and Sera together were great! They really worked and I loved how Harry was all in with Luc. But he did piss me off when it came out who Luc's father was. That stirred up an epic shit storm, they all had to weather. In a way it was a good thing, words got said that needed to and things changed for the better. By the end of the book I liked where all of these characters were, happy living their lives on their own terms.

There is a certain comfort in reading a book and knowing right from the start the issue that is going to cause all the strife and problems. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the build to that moment, and I bawled like a baby when it happened and the aftermath. Lexi can seriously rip your heart out and stomp on it, and she did it exceedingly well here

I loved the strength and resilience of the female characters in this story. Sera, Celeste, Angie, and Delphine, along with their friends and family, had such inner strength, something uniquely theirs, and they learned and grew from each other. Whether intentionally, from mother to daughter, or unintentionally, fights and disagreements, they took something away and made it work for them.

Of course, Harry saw all the wonderfulness that was Sera well before she did, and he was a man dedicated to getting that woman. Sera led him on a chase for awhile before deciding to let herself be happy. The heat and chemistry between them sizzled, but the depth of their emotions is what made it work so well. Throw in a cute toddler and a faithful German Shepard, and even all the forces working against them, couldn’t keep them apart.

We get glimpses of the townsfolk, including Otis the gator in a last minute appearance, and previously met characters, and this story only whetted my appetite even more for Zep’s story!

The connection between these to is palpable, the chemistry hot, the sex, hotter. As her walls crumble, she is willing to give him a chance, but she knows it will never work out. Seraphina previously appeared as airheaded, slightly flighty girl who does not manage to hold a job for long. I was looking forward to her book, expecting a nice and easy, kinda simple book...
Well, I did not get that. I got a strong and sassy woman, a hero with the biggest heart ever and of course an adorable dog and child combination that was just so sweet. Add to that the drama of who the father of Sera's child is and a completely disfunctional family that has its fair share of baggage and needs to cope with it somehow. It. Was. Glorious.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Sera's story and I never wanted it to end. It was just so good and Sera's character development was one of the best Lexi Blake has ever done. I loved to see her shed the shell and become the beautiful butterfly she was always supposed to be.
It's one of my favorite Lexi Blake novels now.
Just loved it.

I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.

Seraphina loves living in her little town. Despite some hiccups in living there, she's happy. And, while she hasn't quite found her place, she knows that if she keeps trying, she will. Her son is adorable and she knows that she has to do what's in his best interst. When she sees the new guy in town, she warns him right away that her mother will try and set them up - she's not intersted and doesn't think it's a good idea.

Harrison isn't used to living in a such a small town. Everyone knows everyone else's business. Rivalries are rampant and his aunt is right in the middle of one of the biggest. Harrison knows his own mind and despite appreciating his aunt's willingness to help him in his time of need, it doens't give her carte blanche over his decisions or life.

When Harrison and Seraphina need to work together, their attraction is something out of a fairy tale. Sera knows she's walking a fine line. She's been at odds with Harrison's aunt, Celeste for years. Nothing she does will ever be OK in Celetes' eyes and Seraphina knows why. While Harrison is falling more and more for Seraphina, Celete is working hard to ensure that Seraphina doens't stay on the property that was willed to her.

Loyalties will be tested, family dynamics will change drastically, lessons are learned and love is found. This is a sweet story that has a lot of drama. When the dust settles, everyone will know the truth and the truth will change everything.

Property porn, delicious family drama, and a gorgeous veteran turned contractor? So many of my favourite things in one story. This is a different side of Lexi Blake for me and I absolutely loved it.

Single mum Sera is a great leading lady. She’s a bit of a mess, has made a few big mistakes but she’s loyal, hardworking. and easy to love. Harrison is an equally perfect hero. If anything, he’s a little too perfect. He’s a blue collar veteran who feels more than a little out of place with his aunt’s wealthy family. He’s quiet and gentle and good – and hooked on Sera. I love the way he slowly earns Sera’s trust as he works to rebuild her home. Theirs is a quiet romance, a connection between two people who are both a little bit jaded by life.

As much as this is Sera and Harrison’s story, it is also the story of Harrison’s aunt. Villain or victim, the relationship between her and Sera is possibly more interesting than the one between Sera and Harrison. And then there’s Sera’s own mother, and the aunt she inherits her house from. In all honesty, it is the women who really shape this story and I think I enjoyed the themes of female fortitude and resilience as much as I enjoyed the romance.

This is a great book from a favourite author.

This is the second book in the series, and I think I would suggest you read them in order, as there is inevitably some world building in Butterfly Bayou, but you could read this as a standalone and love it too.

This story centres around two people who find themselves on the opposite sides of 'proper,' even though they are very similar and it is the interference of others which is at fault.

Harrison has come to help his aunt prepare for his cousin's wedding by rebuilding a wooden gazebo. Since he returned from war, less one leg, he has been happy travelling around the country doing carpentry jobs for friends, and he expects to be moving on again after the wedding. His widowed aunt, Celeste, lives in the big house with her two surviving adult children, and lords it over the community. But really as he learned from his mother, her sister, her origins were humble, and her superiority complex is not from her past. He is, however, tolerant. The son that died was the favoured one, and the fallout from this is still felt now.

Seraphina, single mum who will not say who the father of her son is, who is bequeathed a giant of a house, right in the backyard of Celeste and family. I loved her being so strong, yet accepting that she needed help, that her son deserved the best. That he came first and yet she was prepared to consider that her happiness affected his too. And knowing that Harry really did want her, not just for a short while, but for keeps.

It is the perfect set up for a complicated two-family storyline which plays out in the full view of the gossips of Papillon. I love that although Harry and Sera was central to the romance, there were lots of other issues playing alongside and vying for our attention. There are so many characters who could be the focus of future stories, I am really excited to see what happens next!

Bayou Baby is the second book in Lexi Blake’s Butterfly Bayou series but it can be read as a standalone. Sera Guidry, our heroine, is a young single mum living in her hometown with her family and her three-year-old son. She inherits an old house from her aunt but only on the provision that she uses money left to her to do it up. Enter love interest Harry, a gorgeous single contractor who has come to town to help his Aunt Celeste, who hates Sera with a passion, and helps Sera out with her house.

This is a lovely romance and I like the way that Sera and Harry click. Sera is a good woman and a great mum and Harry is an honest, upstanding hottie. But this story is about more than just their romance. Harry’s Aunt Celeste, a most unlikeable woman, plays a big part in this story. She has a long-standing hatred of Sera and when Sera and Harry start dating, she has to make some choices about her life and her long standing views. Parts of the story are told from Celeste’s point of view and it adds another lay of depth and emotion to the story.

Some parts of Bayou Baby are fun and playful, some are romantic, and others are upsetting and heartbreaking. I went from loving Harry to hating him to loving him again. I’m still not sure how I feel about Celeste, but I can say Sera is one understanding and forgiving woman. I felt a wide range of emotions reading this book and at one point I even had a good cry, but like all good romance stories, the happily ever after was worth the tears.

This book is the second of the series and I would definitely suggest reading the first book in the series so that you will have a better understanding of the players in the Bayou.

The romance starts off slowly between Sera and Harrison. Each of them brings their own set of baggage to the relationship, including secrets that would devastate the families involved.

This was a good book, but at times, it seemed to drag for me.

Sera is a young mother, still grappling with decisions she made years ago and living life in a very small town. Harry is in town to reconnect with the only family he has left, and is still trying to find his place out of the military. They don't seem to have much in common at first glance, other than a lot of chemistry, which is just what Sera does not want in her life. As old secrets start to bubble up, the two of them have to decide what they are really looking for. Set in small town Louisiana, this is a loosely connected series that can be read as a stand alone. Fun secondary characters, including Otis the gator.

Part 2 of an ongoing series

My Bayou Baby Review . . .

We first meet Seraphina Guidry in Butterfly Bayou as she was Lila's brother-in-laws sister. We still have some of the great quirky characters but now we also have Harrison Jefferys and the Beaumonts.

In Butterfly Bayou we knew that Sera was a single mom but didn't know who the father was. In Bayou Baby we finally learn the identity of the father. The Beaumonts are in a league of their own but they also don't play well with others. Celeste Beaumont hates Seraphina with a passion and the last thing she wants is for her nephew Harrison to get involved with her.

I adored Seraphina's character and her quit strength. My favorite part was the email and text banter between her and Celeste. Even though this book revolved around Harrison and Sera we also got so much more with watching the evolution and the thawing of Celeste Beaumont. Celeste and her family also had a lot of growth and hurdles to wade over and while this was happening Harrison and Sera got closer.

I immediately liked Harrison's character and I kept liking him more and more throughout the story. I feel all the quirky character and hijinks of this small town are what truly make each story so far in this series. Now I can't wait for more where we finally get Roxie and Zep's story.
