Re-read July 2025: This remains a perfect sequel in a perfect series. The joy I feel coming back to these characters is unmatched. I can’t wait to finish out the trilogy next week 🥹

Original review:
❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️

Just realized I forgot to ever come back to put my star rating but yeah this is a phenomenal sequel. Top notch characters who have only gotten better and a really fantastic middle book that gives a clear indication of where the story is going from here without ever feeling like you’re just slogging through to get to the next one. Intentional and well crafted. This series continues to be absolutely buckets of fun.

I am so in love with this series. Black Tide Son was a phenomenal follow-up to Dark Water Daughter and I am on the edge of my seat waiting for Red Tempest Brother.

Black Tide Son deepens character relationships and world politics. I was a bit uncertain about a plot motivated by rescuing Benedict given his behavior in book one. But I loved how the story unfolded. Benedict’s character arc was incredible. I loved getting more insight into the complexity of the brothers’ relationship. I also loved Benedict’s snarky support of Mary and Sam’s relationship. I am so intrigued to see the future of his character and his potential role in the unfolding conflict.

I adore Mary and Sam’s relationship. It is a slower burn that takes up a bit more page time in this sequel as they have to decide the future of their relationship. I love that Mary was a bit more lawless, reckless, and assured in their relationship. Sam’s fixation on honor, duty, and the law was a touch ridiculous and insanely endearing. Mary and Sam are such incredible characters. They have so much depth, emotion, and personality to them.

I love how this sequel deepens the magic system. The time skip between books does bypass a good amount of growth—especially with Mary’s Stormsinger magic. But it was interesting to explore the Black Tide cult, amplification, the Dark Water, and other gifts. I also love how the book dives deeper into the political conflict that was lurking in the background of Dark Water Daughter. The ending conflict was so tense and well-written; I was losing my mind.

Once again HM Long’s Winter Sea trilogy will be at the top of my yearly favorites.

Dark Water Daughter is one of my ultimate fav books, and while it did take me a bit longer to read this one, I'm happy to report I loved it just as much.

But first, I have to say that I'm suddenly a fan of Benedict...How did that happen you ask? WELL. Let's just say I'm a villain girl through and through. But for real, in my review of the first book I said he'd have to do a lot to be redeemed in my eyes, and guess what? He listened!!

He's still not a ~good~ person, per se, but I really ended up loving him by the end, and can't wait to see where his character goes from here. He got the most development by far.

I also have to admit that there were moments where I shipped Mary with him more than I did Samuel. BEFORE YOU ATTACK ME, there were legitimate reasons for it, okay. Like when they conspired together, I felt the chemistry, it was leaping off the page. And I know I'm not the only one who felt it.

But you know what? I kinda ship Benedict with Charles too...tell me you see the vision. I lived for their friendship the whole book, their banter was probably my favourite, and if it turned romantic? They'd be my fav couple.

Speaking of couples, Mary and Samuel are the slowest of slow burns and I love it. It's almost agonising, waiting for them to kiss or for Samuel to not be as proper as he is, but that's also why I like him as a character. You can really feel the tension with these two.

I enjoyed getting to know Sam better as well, and reading about his relationship with his brother. It made me appreciate both of them more as characters. Another reviewer said that this is more their book than Mary's and I agree, but she gets her chance to shine too, don't you worry.

Like, for example, that scene where Mary's singing with the other Stormsingers, I'm still in awe of their power.

I love the lore & magic system expansion we got, the new characters and creatures we met, the delightful (but at the same time chilling) atmosphere on the high seas, the plot, the battle scenes, and just how well H. M. Long can write! I was once again easily led into the story, even though it's been more than a year since I read the first book.

The pacing was a bit off though, not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, but it seemed to follow a "big event, break, big event, break" formula. But rest assured, this book still caused me great amounts of stress, particularly in the last third.

The epilogue was perfect, and unexpected. If I hadn't already been excited about what was to come, that would've done it.

Now with book two done, I can say that the author likes wrapping up plots by the end, while still leaving us with one that stretches throughout the series. And it's more fun that way, because stuff actually gets resolved, but there's still more story to tell.

The only thing I missed here, is Demery. I needed him to show up sooo bad. Hopefully the gang will be back together again in book three. And until then, PLEASE READ THIS SERIES!!!!

Slightly let down, but still addictive.
Mary Firth, Stormsinger, and Captain Samuel Rosser of Hart, privateer and a South, are under commission of the Usti Crown.
On the side, they are searching for Samuel’s twin Benedict who is a Magni who can control the minds and actions of others. However, both brothers’ ability to manipulate the Other is corrupted and could easily lead to their death without a cure.

They are also being hunted by the Ess Noti who are willing to kill for the knowledge and skills mages have.
And the division between worlds is at its thinnest during the Black Tides.

The wind did not care for distant threats— it cared only for swiftness and freedom. "Part of me is ready for a new adventure."

Samuel and Mary’s relationship must be carefully drawn as the Captain and Stormsinger is a relationship traditionally fraught with abuse and Mary is the first contracted Stormsinger in centuries. They had to be different to set an example to the world.

We do see more tension and development between them and their characters are fleshed out, especially Samuel’s through flashbacks to his and Ben’s past.

”We are the sum of our choices, and what are we to do when all those choices are evil? When the powers who govern us push us away from peace, and into further violence?"
“We heed our consciences," I replied.

The writing is fast paced and very accessible. This might be an adult fantasy, but the writing makes it easy to understand and gripping for all.

I did find that the characters still lacked that depth I want to latch on and despite the promising and tease of great worldbuilding, it feels like a lot of it happens in the author’s head rather than being shown on the page.

I felt freezing cold and wet throughout this book. The Black waters are encroaching and I’m surprised our characters haven’t caught frostbite yet.

Thank you to Titan Books for providing me with the physical arc!

I think it’s common knowledge that Dark Water Daughter was my favorite read of last year. I love dark pirates, strange magic, and partnerships that don’t turn into romance, so the book had all the right parts for me. It was just excellent and had all my favorite elements so naturally I had (unrealistically) high hopes for Black Tide Son.

I feel spoiled because I had both advanced reading and listening copies, so thanks very much to Titan Books and Recorded Books for those. Both were received for free in exchange for an honest review, and as always all opinions are my own ⚔️

Black Tide Son was still a very good read despite not quite hitting as hard. The atmosphere remains thick and the magic stays strange, but the plot itself wasn’t as engaging for me. As you can guess by the title, this is Samuel and Benedict’s book more than Mary’s. We learn how their magic became corrupted and explore the brothers' complicated relationship. It’s not easy, it’s not happy, but is there a cure to their condition? Could Benedict ever not be a monster and can Samuel have a chance at sanity?

The other part is that of course now Mary and Samuel are exploring their feelings. Thankfully there’s blessed little pining and not much repetition, plus I respect his sense of honor. I am never a fan of romantic plots but I’ve seen much much worse.

Anyway, as much as I love swirling tides and the gistings and such, I didn’t think the espionage and war was as engaging of a plot. I also got sick of the main characters getting casually shot, like how many bullets can people take before they can’t shrug it off and are taken out of the action?

Regardless, this is another action packed book and Long is wonderful at creating high stakes and urgency. I love her descriptions of the ice and tides and general setting too. I def wasn’t ever bored while reading or listening.

One thing I’m excited about is that it seems like Benedict is going to have a big role in the next book. He’s a morally questionable character at best and I’m interested in knowing more.

Finally with the audiobook… I learned something new. Sometimes the narrators would repeat sentences multiple times with different pronunciations, which I’ve never heard before so it must have been a very early version. Not relevant but I love learning about the production process. Anyway, I am glad that Moira Quirk and Samuel Roukin are back and at top form. They are cast perfectly for these characters and do wonderfully clear accents. I would totally recommend Black Tide Son in both audio or book form

Thank you SO MUCH NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me a chance to read this book!

I was a big fan of the first, so when this popped up I had to request it as soon as possible. I dove into it just quickly and came out absolutely on the edge and needing to have book two as soon as possible.

The book picks up almost instantly where the first book left off on. Samuel is looking for his brother (attempting to find a cure for them), Mary is assisting him, while dangerous forces are trying to take control of the seas and the Stormsingers (and others like Mary with powers). We add new friends, old friends, and realize some may not be the villains we thought they were.

It is SO REFRESHING TO HAVE MATURE CHARACTERS. I can't say it enough. Samuel and Mary have developed deeper feelings and never do they have misunderstandings and if they DO have any issues they talk it out like adults. Mary is never sheltered by Samuel, nor is Samuel sheltered by Mary. They assist one another and boost each other up.

Ben who we met in the first book has become my anti-hero fave. I absolutely love his character and how damaged he is, and yet... he wants to be a good man and somehow keeps falling right back into needed his powers. The chapters of him with Mary or Samuel are interesting because as twins (Samuel and Ben) you can see how alike they are on the outside but how much they differ once you get to know Ben. I love how dangerous he is but how determined he is as well. He is just a very broken, layered character. I am excited to see book three and where it takes him.

I love this series and I think there is enough to write about explore that can be more than three books. Of course when the author gets tired of the world they can close up shop on it, but the lack of reads ./ reviews has me sad. Oh well, I'm a picky reader to begin with and this is my first pirate series that makes me feel like there is something there.

“For him, I would risk nothing. But for you, I would do anything.”

Welcome back to the work of the Winter Sea!!

This sequel is everything I could have wanted from Long and more. It makes me want to reread the first one just to start the whole experience again (which I might do cause I love Moira Quirk)

Plot: 5/5
A lot happens in this book to the individual characters and for the greater world of the book. I like how our main cast characters spent a good portion isolated, it made for fantastic development in their dynamics. Also the politics of the world and the increased depth to the magic added so much to their adventures.

Characters: 5/5

“One of these days I may seduce you, Samuel Rosser. The crew and appearances be damned.”

I am a Mary Samuel fan girl first and a human second so this book brought me SO much joy! And not for the reasons you think.. mostly because Samuel is hilariously stubborn and set in his desire not to sully their reputations. That with Mary’s determination to fluster him and her bluntness make for a DELIGHTFUL reading experience.

I was absolutely shocked by how much I liked Ben by the end of this book. We really get to see so much of his true character when he’s not trying to be an asshole and I am so proud of his character development. Also Charlie’s just being like along for the ride with all of this makes me chuckle. I hope we get more development in his story going forward too.

Writing: 5/5
I love Long’s writing style, it itches my brain just right. The winter vibes of this book are so perfectly crafted, it makes me wish it was snowing right now. There is a perfect amount of the dry humor I adore mixed in to the very serious situations. And she balances plot development really well with the character arcs, it is just so satisfying to read.

Overall: 5/5 duh

Thank you to Titan for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review— I love having connections hehehe

This was fantastic! I loved the writing style. It was very immersive and atmospheric. It was great to be back with characters I really enjoyed. The character development in this was phenomenal. It had a strong plot that wrapped up nicely at the end. It was action-packed, and the pacing was great. I absolutely adored the narrators. They did such an amazing job and really complimented each other. The narration really brought the story to life.

I just read Black Tide Son by H.M. Long and here is what I thought about it:

Thanks to Titan for the free copy.

As one of my most highly anticipated releases of 2024, thank god this lived up to my expectations. Nearly every other book I was dying to read this year utterly flopped, so thank you H.M. Long for writing a good fantasy book with good characters and a high stakes story.

The Good
Let’s get this out in the open right now… I am in love with Mary Firth. The main characters of this book, Sam and Mary continue to be fully realized, interesting, beautiful characters and in addition to them, we also see a lot of development with the supporting cast, especially Samuel’s brother Benedict. It takes precises writing to take a character you hate tooth and nail and make them lovable (not good, but definitely sympathetic and interesting). The development of the magic system was seamless, and the world was more fully fleshed out during this entry in the Winter Sea Saga. I loved it.

H.M. Long’s writing also continues to impress. The prose was elegant and composed. Nothing felt underdeveloped and at the same time nothing felt overly flowery. I was impressed by the character dialogue and the information that was included in moments of tension and banter.

I also appreciated the decision making as the plot progressed. The book never took the easy way out and made multiple, small decisions with confidence that led the book in an unexpected, yet fully deserved direction.

The Bad
There isn’t much to say here other than I think the book had a pacing issue from the ~50% mark to about the 75% mark. I felt my interest wane a bit as an issue took too long to resolve. Other than that, there was an ineffable quality that had me feeling that I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the first one, but I think that’s pretty typical.

I can’t wait for Red Tempest Brother next year. More fantasy like this please. I am dying for well told stories.

I want to thank #netgalley - #TitanBooks for the kindle & #RBMedia for the audio- I realize it’s nerdy gluttony, but I love to go back and forth btwn both mediums so I can hyper focus on a story.

And wooOO! Long builds a rich world* full of politics, layered magic systems, and yessss– even a slow burn romance** & it demands your attention. Did I mention intriguing grey characters that you *need* to keep your eyes on? TBH, it contains every fantasy element I crave for bookish escapism.

But TBH, I can’t believe it took me till book 2 realize Moira Quirk was on this- she’s one of my favorite narrators!

In book one, I was unsure how I felt about Tane/Mary relationship, in book 1 it felt creepy, but in book 2 it proved itself more empowering.

I’m looking forward to book 3 (Red Tempest Son slated for July 2025).

Don’t sleep on this series! Highly recommend- 4/5

*At the start of book 3, can there be a series recap so far (the Rook & Rose series by M.A. Carrick does this and I wish this was a standard practice 😩.)

** Though I am begging for a little more spice in book three. (Pretty please!)

Dark Water Daughter was one of my top reads of last year, a million out of five. I loved the magic system and the characters and the setting and the tension and ugh, it was amazing. You should ABSOLUTELY READ IT.

I felt like Black Tide Son was DWD on maybe 50% power.

1) I hated that by the time we pick up with Sam and Mary at the beginning of BTS (fourteen months after the events of DWD) they have already fallen for each other. I was so looking forward to watching them fall for each other and I felt a bit cheated. And worse, they like each other and want to be together, but Sam can't because "it would look bad". Mary keeps trying to come onto him and he won't because he's just so virtuous and it would compromise her. I realize it was meant to be part of his character arc, but it felt horribly infantilizing to Mary who didn't care about being compromised and said so repeatedly.

2) Sam was a bit of a nothingburger character in this. I somehow ended up liking his evil twin brother - who very much got a woman pregnant by pretending to be Sam and let Sam take the fall for it - better than Sam. Ben was interesting and had his own agenda and weirdly seemed to suit Mary better than Sam at various points? To the point where I was considering shipping the FMC with the evil twin brother of the clearly endgame MMC. That was weird.

3) I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll be vague, but the ending was just toooo effing easy.

All of this being said, I still want to read the 3rd one and will definitely be getting it. I'm just desperately hoping this was just a bad run of second book syndrome. I was so so so looking forward to this one and I was definitely disappointed, but that may be due to my expectations being so high considering how much I loved DWD.

I'll be interested to see other peoples thoughts.

I LOVED dwd, but trying to get through this one is like pulling teeth, so after four (4!) months of it being stuck in my current reads, I’m gonna bail at 60%. I may pick it back up when book 3 is upcoming and I feel more sense of urgency.

It’s hard to put my finger on exactly why I feel no drive whatsoever to pick this up, but here are some loose thoughts:

1) Mary and Samuel had a bunch of development happen off page in between books, so now what was a simmering will-they-won’t-they slowburn in the first book instead feels tensionless and inevitable and bland.
2) Samuel, in general, feels pretty bland in this one.
3) The plot feels incredibly disconnected from the plot in the first book, and I just simply don’t care about it nearly as much. I miss the folklore and the ghistings and the pirate lord and the nautical setting. We’ve spent way too much of this book on land, and I don’t care about the stuff they’re exploring and discovering - I just want them to get back out to sea.
4) More vaguely, the plot just feels… overly convenient. Too nebulously strung together. It’s like a random series of events that just happens to lead them into these grand discoveries, and something about it feels frictionless and too easy.

Anyways, this isn’t a “bad book,” it’s just missing too much of what I loved in the first one, and I feel completely apathetic about it.

A nonstop adventure packed with daring escapes and high stakes on the high seas—and a gripping tale of betrayal and forgiveness between brothers. BLACK TIDE SON is half piratical fantasy, half familial intrigue, and all impossible to put down.

Dark Water Daughter was one of my favourite books I read last year, so when I received an early copy of Black Tide Son from the publisher, I can confirm I squealed with excitement. I absolutely adore this series and think this was an excellent instalment. The fantastic worldbuilding and set up in the first book was really well continued into the sequel. In this book the world expands, the politics become more complex and the characters are pushed into new and challenging situations. H.M.Long's writing is so engaging that even in slow parts of the narrative I was never bored or wanting to put the book down. My one and only criticism is that occasionally I found there to be a convenient solution to plot points, but this wasn't enough to detract from my overall enjoyment of the story.

I love these characters so much, their motives and flaws are so well established that they are interesting and engaging to read from. This book continues to be atmospheric and exciting with one of the best fantasy settings I have read. I cannot wait for the next book, but in the meantime I intend to read all of this author's backlist.

This was an interesting second installment. I liked being back with the characters. I was a little disappointed as the story tension from the first book was not as high in the second. I also had to knock it down a half star because the audiobook narrator is audibly swallowing multiple times throughout the book and it just kept throwing me out of the story. I would potentially pick up a third book if one happens.

Well....this was a very very plot-heavy book. I like the characters, but I like their interactions and dynamics more, and sadly there was not all that much time given to that (especially in the second half).
For the third book I have high hopes though. ;)

UGH I’ve been dreading having to talk about this…

But I need to address it because of my LOVE for Dark Water Daughter!!!

And I hope it comes across in my posts that I’m always honest with my thoughts/feelings and I don’t tend to get caught up in hyping a book up only because it’s popular or because I loved the first book SO much (e.g. The disappointing ending to one of my favourite books/series - The Bone Shard Daughter)

So I hate to say it but Black Tide Son completely lost all the magic and intrigue that Book 1 had going for it. The emotional connection to the characters has vanished, their relationship dynamics didn’t make sense to me, and most of the book was a constant cat and mouse chase that had no tension, no stakes, and honestly just boring??

Ahhh I’m so gutted to have to write this honestly!!! Something just felt completely off here, I’ve slightly convinced myself that H M Long didn’t even write this (that’s how different it felt!) This story just felt so bogged down and lacked in any meaningful character/world building and I. Am. So. Sad.

There are a lot of 4-5 star reviews though already so I’m also confused and don’t feel like I read the same book as everyone else?! So you might actually end up enjoying this more than I did.

Such a shame!

I only picked up the first book in this series because Moira Quirk narrates, and I heard she uses her Palamedes voice (from the Locked Tomb audiobooks) for one of the male characters. I wound up enjoying Dark Water Daughter on its own merits—though Moira Quirk's fabulous narration didn't hurt—and I think this second book is even better.

This series is so much fun. It's adult fantasy that's both soothing to read and a swashbuckling good time. There are no big twists, grimdark deaths or deep, profound moments, but it's well-written and immersive. Long's prose is very good and she serves up mages, witches, romance, prison breaks and a hero with an evil twin.

And let me tell you, the evil twin steals the show in this one! He has the best moments and lines. He's self-serving, cruel, and always saying awful things.

“A young woman lonely and driven to seek comfort in me—in my brother—because of her husband’s braggartly ways, his disregard for her and others, his gross and obvious favoritism, and his frequent, casual cruelty towards her inability to bear him a child. An inability, I might point out, that was rectified by a single night with me—”

And yet, I am a little obsessed with Benedict Rosser (I can fix him!). I’m eager to see where Long takes his character in the next book.

Mary remains a bit of an uninspired heroine and Samuel, our hero, is mostly only interesting to me in scenes with his brother Benedict. Was I the only one who found the scene where Ben suggests he step in for his brother with Mary in the bedroom hotter than any of the Mary/Samuel scenes?

Mary and Sam are very predictable and unrelentingly good. But that works for me in a book like this that is more of a comfort read than anything. They might not be the most complex characters, but they get up to fun hijinks and the people around them, like Charles, Helena and Ben, add enough drama and conflict to always keep them on their toes and in interesting situations.

I'm surprised this series hasn't blown up. It's like The Shepherd King duology crossed with Pirates of the Caribbean.

Thanks to Netgalley and RBmedia for the audiobook ARC.

Thank you to NetGalley for an e-arc of this in return for an honest review!

This continuation from Dark Water Daughter is gripping and adds a world of lore and depth that i truly appreciated!

All of the relationships between the characters (both platonic and romantic) are extended and have so much more to them which i loved, all of the characters are more fleshed out and fit the world so well. The world and magic continues to grow and the lore of this world is so cool, the monsters and creatures are more present in this which helped to add to the tension

The combination of narratives from past and present really helped add to my understanding of the characters and add complexity to them and how they act within the world.

This series is heading in such an interesting way, the relationship ships have been cemented and we are left with multiple routes for all the different characters which i’m so excited for!

The relationship between Sam and Mary makes my heart melt, they work so well together and understand and care for each other in such a beautiful way

I do wish we had spent more time on the battle that the book leads up to - there was lots of lead up and tension yet i feel like the battle was over so quickly and we didn’t have the time to appreciate the tension within it

I cannot wait to continue with this series as it comes and the potential of this will keep me on my toes for future books!

As expected of author H.M. Long's writing, you will easily be captivated and compelled in the storytelling. As for Black Tide Son, the characters were what really endeared me so and what I was looking forward to.

I was so happy to have experience having Charles once again in this story. He was such a delight. The same goes for the existing characters. Although I was quite worried about their well-being, considering all the things that happened in this instalment.

I was also very surprised to care so much of Ben. He was such a compelling and kind of a complex character for me. Charismatic, sarcastic, and a good amount of sassiness. I did enjoy the journey of his character arc. For some reason, I just thought of Charles when writing this part 😆 I was also glad for Ben's development, which I was really rooting for his character as well aside from Sam and Mary.

As for Mary and Sam, this pairing frustrates 😆 I mean I love these 2 so much, but the level of miserable and kind self sabotaging and the push and pull going on with their romance stresses me so much that I wish I could just locked them myself since Ben didn't do that when they were in that scene. Long story short, I want a whole arc of these pairing being happy and lovey dovey. So I'm definitely hoping for the next to have Mary and Sam's romance be developed more.

Now, onto the main plot, Black Tide Son, finding Ben, the Ess Notti, the breaking in the prison, the running arc, and the finding cure. I'm not gonna lie, THEY DID STRESSED ME SO. So many intense events did happen here that I wondered how I was able to remember them. I would say this is a mix of character - and plot driven type of novel.

For all of that, I would like to point out the issue or the things that, in my opinion, did bother me a little. The storyline and the storytelling were a little bit slow and dragging for my taste, or it did seem like it.

Overall, I enjoyed it so much. It was compelling and a page turner. Highly recommended and so excited for the next instalment, especially for Ben and Charles duo and his crew 🩷

Thank you once again, Titan Books and author H.M. Long for the e-arc opportunity via Netgalley ✨️.

Black Tide Son, the much anticipated sequel to Dark Water Daughter, brings us back to the Winter Sea with many of our cherished friends from book one to continue on their high seas adventures.
This time, Samuel, Mary, and their faithful crew go up against a new mysterious foe while on a quest across worlds to find a cure for the Black Tide sickness ailing Samuel and his twin brother Benjamin.

The vivid setting was again a stand out (as it is for all of H.M. Long's books) where I swear I can feel a winter wind blowing as I'm reading some of these scenes. The magic system and all original lore built upon itself from book 1 and brought more creatures and an expansion of Mary's magic in particular into book 2. As anticipated, Black Tide Son provides more historical context into the world's different societies and cultures - what motivates them and what would push them to the brink of war and I am VERY excited to see how this continues to play out throughout the rest of the series.

Though completely brimming with action the pacing felt a little choppy in comparison to Dark Water Daughter and I so wish we had gotten a little more of Samuel and Mary's burgeoning romance --talk about slow burn -- pick up the pace, Samuel, my man! I missed Demery's character and getting to know more about Anne and I hope they make a return to the narrative in the next book!

Overall, I enjoyed another foray on the high seas with some of my favorite characters and their various magics but Black Tide Son wasn't *quite* the powerhouse that Dark Water Daughter was (it was high bar!!). I am, however, excited to see what comes next in the series.

Thank you netgalley and Titan Books for the opportunity to read and review Black Tide Son as an e-arc!

"Black Tide Son" by H.M. Long is an adult fantasy pirate romance that, unfortunately, left me feeling quite disappointed. I was eager to dive into this book, anticipating a focus on Samuel and his brother Benedict's magic and journey, but it did not meet my expectations.

Let's discuss what I enjoyed. Long's atmospheric writing remains impressive in this installment. The author immerses us in the ocean and fog alongside the characters and spirits, making it feel like we are truly at sea. The magic continues to be intriguing and fun. Benedict, in particular, stood out as a wonderfully complex character with whom I finally felt an emotional connection to.

However, there were many aspects I didn't enjoy. Samuel and Mary still lack depth as characters. Their romance, despite being a significant storyline, felt severely underdeveloped. The story had too much happening simultaneously—Benedict's storyline, the characters being chased, the quest to find a cure, the romance, the Ess Notie, and the Mages. This overwhelming number of plot threads caused Samuel and Mary's character development to suffer. Their slow-burn romance was dull and unengaging. Additionally, the ending felt too neat and tidy given the complexity of events that unfolded.

Despite my disappointment, I remain invested in Benedict as a character and look forward to seeing more of him in future books.

Overall, I'm unsure if I would recommend this book. While it has its strengths, the lack of character depth and an overly complicated plot made it a less enjoyable read for me.

I'm on a long string of meh books.

I loved Dark Water Daughter and was so excited to read the sequel and wow, did it feel like the story ground to a halt. Forgive me if I'm wrong because I listened to both books on audible so it's hard for me to check, but DWD sure felt like it happened over months and BTS, which it had to have happened over months as well because of the tides, felt more like it happened over weeks due to how little really happens.

I'm not a fan of how the book keeps saying Benedict seduced that woman under the guise of his brother. There's a stronger word for it. Maybe it would become clearer to Benedict why he lost his position in the navy if we used the correct vocabulary for what he did - rape. I could appreciate that Sam feels unable to leave his brother in prison, but I was certain Mary would've at least had reservations about it seeing as he tried to RAPE HER during the first book.

All in all the world simply felt smaller and less magical in this book compared to the first, and a lot of the atmosphere was lost alongside it. Mary and Sam having a companionable but platonic relationship most of the book was cozy but really added to how dragging the story felt. The romance was so slow the first book you could argue it isn't even there and while this improves upon it... It's boring.

Benedict and his (hopefully gay) adventures will certainly be more exciting and I will be continuing the story.

4.5! Thoroughly enjoyed this. Black Tide Son picks up where Dark Water Daughter left off- and we finally get to see the elusive Benedict Rosser. I LOVED the banter between the characters in this book. I loved the little quips from Charles, and the tension between Mary and Samuel was perfection. Their relationship felt realistic (as much as a magical pirate relationship can), and Samuel is just such a stand up man. 🥲 Mary’s sarcastic wit was fun to read and I thought the interactions between her and Benedict were equally as enjoyable. I’m looking forward to the third installment in the series as we were left on a bit of a cliffhanger; but nothing so drastic that it didn’t feel as if the story wasn’t concluded enough, if that makes sense.

Thank you to NetGalley, HM Long, and the publisher, for the opportunity to read the ARC! Here’s to waiting for the next book 🤪

With prison breaks, espionage and plenty of high seas action to immerse in; the second book in the Winter Series was just as unputdownable as the first!

Following on from the events of Dark Water Daughter, we find our protagonists (Mary and Samuel) thriving as Privateers. But after news involving Samuel’s estranged twin (Benedict) and the knowledge they are being hunted by a sinister new foe, Mary and Samuel set off on a perilous rescue mission. Which sees them uncover a plot that threatens, not just their lives, but the fate of The Winter Sea itself.

Delving even further into the world, (its magical lore, and high stakes political tension) H.M. Long’s vivid prose perfectly captures that immersive, nail biting sense of danger that epic fantasy fans (myself included) absolutely adore.

I loved getting to see Mary and Samuel again, as they’ve both come soo far since we last saw them. Mary, (previously timid and running mostly on desperation) is now a fiercely confident and fearless Stormsinger, willing to take on any challenge, even if it means breaking into prisons or taking on naval fleets (and I loved that for her!)

But it was actually Samuel (and the exploration we get into his past) that really stole the show for me. Heartbreakingly complex, the flashbacks (detailing his and Benedict’s childhood) explain so much of the protectiveness, sense of duty and need for control Samuel clings to. And really brought a sense of humanity to Benedict I hadn’t expected.

Having despised him for this manipulative and selfish tactics in Dark Water Daughter. I ended up slightly sympathising with (and even starting to like) him here, and found his presence really helped Samuel become more assertive as a Captain. I wouldn’t say he’s redeemed just yet, but he’s certainly closer than I ever thought possible.

I do have to mention, the romance wasn’t as in depth as I would’ve liked (but Samuel’s devotion was really lovely.)

Overall, a satisfyingly addictive sequel that has me even more excited for book three. And all the chaos that is sure to follow!

Also, thanks to Titan Books for the finished copy.

4.5/5 stars.

I've had the privilege of reading everything H.M. Long's published since the description of Hall of Smoke piqued my interest. I can say with no uncertainty that she's found her stride with the Winter Sea Trilogy. She recently spoke about how the story has evolved over time (r/Fantasy AMA) and I am so happy where it landed (though fiddler Sam would be good iykyk).

Black Tide Son picks up where Dark Water Daughter leaves off and the plot is quick. This absolutely does not fall into middle book syndrome at any point. The characters are compelling, especially Benedict but catch me interested in the darker characters, always. I don't want to get into the plot since it's a sequel but rest assured it's fast-paced, completely captivating. Long's prose is perfectly crafted to suite the world she's crafted. In my mind this is very much Kiera Knightley and Orlando Bloom from Pirates of the Caribbean adjacent which I am absolutely in love with.

The audiobook is incredible, Moira Quirk (one of my all time favourite narrators) and Samuel Roukin do an incredible job of bringing the characters to life. If you haven't yet, I highly recommend checking out Dark Water Daughter (which does start a bit slower, but stick with it!) and then continuing on the series.

Thank you to Titan Books and H.M. Long for the arc in exchange for an honest review. 4.5/5 stars. I am happy to report that this definitely does not have the dreaded “second-book syndrome”! Black Tide Son shifts its focus from Mary to hone in on Samual and Benedict and their corrupted magic. I loved the brother’s dynamic and found Benedicts character to be so layered and complex. He isn’t a good person but I found myself unable to root against him. This book fleshes out the magic system much more than in the first book and adds new protagonists around every turn. My anxiety was definitely on edge the whole time. And THIS is the type of slow-burn romance, full of tension and longing glances, that I want in my fantasy books! An engaging plot with a dash of achingly slow-burn romance is what Long has delivered and I ate it up. I will say that it did feel like the characters could never catch a break. Every time it felt like the characters were finally getting ahead of all the chaos, the next round of bad luck struck. This is definitely not a complaint. It kept the story engaging and the plot moving forward. Overall, I really loved this installment in the Winter Sea series and can’t wait for the release!

This is somewhere between a 4 and a 5 and I’ve decided to round up just because I love these books.

A slow start turned into a real page turner. I’m not really sure I understood everything that was happening, but I loved every second of it.

Notes to future me:
- Benedict took the red tempest and grant and sailed off with a male storm singer? Maybe grant? Could grant and Ben fall in love? My dream?
- next book to focus on Ben and grant?! Please?! Unless it’s setting up Ben and ensica ugh
- the usti spy girl ensica went missing but wasn’t missing and is actually a magni?
- Sam and Mary to sail away and find peace and get married.

Well this was a doozy. Ughhhh I wanted to like this so bad. It has potential and I know there's a third book. But it was so hard to get through. Im not sure if it was my inability to keep details straight or if the book itself was just written in a way that's too difficult to follow. It was so detailed which I have to respect but as im pushing my way through all the details, I caught myself stopping and being like "I dont care". The romance in this was more of a subplot, but that made me appreciate it more. It was so sweet, but there was so many other things happening all the time. This was a pirate book, but the magic system and themes were too heavy, it became more about that then pirates at sea.
But I made it through. I dont think I'll be able to finish out this trilogy 🫤
