Nomadic construction worker Vlad inadvertently gains superpowers and enters ultratime after guzzling a radioactive energy drink he finds near the nuclear-disaster site of Chernobyl. Svetlana, an army veteran coping with PTSD, sees Vlad crash back into real time, finds him unconscious, and saves his life. They bond over this secret, fall in love, and decide to use the stash of energy drinks to fight evil as the superhero duo HyperVigilanté.

Both sci-fi adventure and love story, this David-versus-Goliath tale set in Russia is rife with pop culture references from video games, movies, TV series, music, and even scripture. A fun and funny mash-up of Russian and American cultures, it's a wild ride with Vlad and Svetlana as they battle mobsters, terrorists, and corrupt politicians while building a new life together.

If you want the explosive action of the Equalizer paired with the awkward nerdiness of Napoleon Dynamite and served with a side of Easter eggs like Ready Player One, then HyperVigilanté belongs in your hands! Buy yourself a copy! An early reader of the book said, "A good book makes me consider how the characters would react to real world situations. You've made me do that with Vlad and Svetlana."

HyperVigilanté is a potent concoction of action, romance, virtue and humor blended in the right proportion

Right off the first page, Vlad strikes us as a righteous stalwart guided by his strong moral compass. His compassion towards the people around him and his work ethics paint him as a near perfect character who we start to fall in love with over the course of the story. He leads what some might call a 'boring' life and almost nothing of interest happens until he stumbles upon a radioactive energy drink cache somewhere near the infamous Chernobyl power plant, not far from Svetlana, the femme fatale of the story. A warm friendship brews between them and together they decide to join hands and put the superhuman abilities harnessed from the newfound energy drink to good use. However, no superhero story is complete without an antagonist force that must be reckoned with and in the final few chapters this story unveils one that makes our heart race.

In the first half, the author takes his time to introduce the characters and depicts the cute love blossoming between the lead duo. At one point, I was half-convinced that this story is going to be an out-and-out light-hearted romance novel owing to the slow buildup. But the moment the author switched gears, there was no turning back.

The second half is riddled with plenty tense moments and slick action sequences. It's where things actually get interesting and the plot unravels in a rapid pace. Despite the stark contract in their upbringing, both Vlad and Svetlana are bound together by their shared beliefs and values which drive them to challenge those evading from the crutches of justice.

The climax, although a bit rushed, will leave you wanting for more. The author intentionally leaves a bunch of unresolved threads, likely setting the stage for future developments, each potentially deserving its standalone spinoff.

If you're a gamer like me who loves AAA/post-apocalyptic games like Fallout and Metro, or someone who loves stories served with a good scoop of pop culture references, profound biblical verses, then this one is for you. I can't wait for this story to be developed into a multi book series because it holds so much promise and lots of ideas waiting to be explored.
