If you enjoy a good historical romance, then you definitely need this in your life. I listened to the audiobook and it was amazing! It is narrated by Zara Hampton-Brown and Shane East, I always love their voices paired together. They gave perfect performances as usual!
One of my favorite things about historical romances is that they often depict a badass FMC who doesn’t quite fit into their societal mold. I loved Lady Juliana and her desire to live her own life. There was an element of suspense as someone chased after her, and she had no idea who or why they wanted to harm her. Leonard’s sordid past added another layer to the story, and I loved their tension and chemistry.
If you like:

💜Forced Proximity
✨Secret Identities
💜Troubled Past
✨Single Guardian
💜Dual POV
✨Spice
Then I highly recommend listening to this one!

Fear and Fortitude is a historical romance with forced proximity and secret identities!

Lady Juliana is the sister of a Duke and on the run when the story starts. About to be sold off into an arranged marriage with a man triple her age, Juliana refuses to let her future be settled by others. She takes control of her own life and arranges for her escape. We then cut to the hero, Leonard. He hears gunshots on his land one day and goes off to find out what is going on when he comes across Juliana. The marquess brings her inside to heal up and to figure out exactly who she is and why she was covered in blood with jewels hidden in her pockets.

A few days later when Juliana wakes, she tells Leo she is a governess who was traveling for a job when a carriage accident happened. He tells her he happens to be in need of a governess since his ward, his niece, is living with him. But really he just wants to keep her close as he works out exactly what she’s up to and who she is.

Both characters have emotional scars and backstories, I liked how both have secrets they’re keeping from one another and hiding their identities. The first half of the story was great, it did start to lag in the middle to second half range for me. But all in all this was especially fun on audio and kept me entertained! Narrated by Shane East and Zara Hampton Brown, definitely recommend and was happy to try out a new historical romance author.

I received an audio ALC, all thoughts in this review are my own!

Fear and Fortitude is my first book from Cheri Champagne and it has me very intrigued. I'm ready for more! It's a historical romance about a woman determined to forge her own path and a disgraced man who is carrying a heavy burden from the past.

Juliana is trying to escape a fate she finds most unbearable and it leads her to Leo's doorstep in a state of distress. Leo is a guardian to his orphaned niece and he really doesn't need anymore drama in his life. But he brings her inside and gets her nursed back to health and then she finds herself tutoring said niece for the time being.

However, they are both hiding their true identities and when those secrets start to come out.. it might not even matter that the passion brewing between them has them aching to know each other more. All the while.. there is danger haunting their steps and it could cost them everything.

I was interested in the premise of this novel, and I thought there was some good chemistry between them.. However, it felt very convoluted and for a shorter novel it had so much going on. But I will continue the series now that the Bow Street office is set up!

I listened to the audio book. Zara and Shane were classy and a pleasure to listen to, as always. I feel like the narration elevated the story for me as well.

2 on the spice scale

*Thank you to Must Love Audio and the author for an ALC of this title.*

Thanks to BookSprout for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.

This was the first book I read from this author and was a tension and action packed historical. It was written from differing perspectives, and because one of the perspectives was by the villain chasing the heroine, that added to the predator-prey dynamic and tension of the story.

In this story, the first of a new series called Bow Street Wallflowers, it opens with a prologue set many years before the current situation, and sets the scene of complex and conflicting family dynamics in the Sinclair family. In the present day, Lady Juliana Sinclair, the sister of a duke, is in dire straits. She is on the run, in the winter woods, with flagging strength and energy. She is found by Leonard Notley, the the reclusive owner of the estate.

Juliana and Leonard keep their true identities secret from each other. Juliana is running from an arranged marriage by her brother. Later, she finds out that she is being pursued by someone seeking to do harm to her, causing her accident which lead to her running through the Notley woods. Leonard has a shameful scandal and reputation he is trying to keep hidden, but is trying to be a better person, including finding a governess for his orphaned niece. Having been unable to do so, he hires Juliana on the spot, and as his estate makes a good place to hide temporarily.

Of course, being a romance, they are attracted to each other. Leonard is conflicted terribly by this, as Juliana is a woman in his employ and under his protection and he has taken a vow of celibacy. He is greatly tempted by Juliana though, especially when she determines to seduce Leonard, thinking that giving up her maidenhead may stymie her brother's plans to marry her off.

Leonard and Juliana are forced together, and on the run when the dangerous assailant finds Juliana and continues to pursue her, and as all secrets do, their identities come to the light, to each other, leading to anger and hurt feelings on both sides.

More of the past and secrets come to light when Juliana and Leonard return to London, and find her brother. Leonard is absolved of his responsibility to Juliana when he gives her over to the Duke's care, but finds afterwards that he is not happy without her. The risk of danger encompasses more than just Juliana, and in the midst of Juliana and her brother finding out that both their lives are at risk, Leonard comes to realize he loves Juliana, and becomes entangled in her and her Bow Street friend's plans on entrapping their pursuers.

I liked the 3 person perspective that the first parts of this story were written in, especially as the perspective of the pursuer was not fully identified until later, which added to the predator-prey tension and intrigue of the story. The family dynamics were interesting and makes me question a few things, such as the level of sanity of some of Juliana's relatives, and what happened to the dead cousin that caused such ire in her brothers - is that something that is explored later on? Being the first in the series, other characters and some feelers for other relationships were sent out, and while I am understanding that it was laying the groundwork for a continuation of the story later on, it was a bit detracting from the main story for me, of Leonard and Juliana - or at least did not add to their story. Namely that of one of Juliana's friend and her apparently hidden tendre for the Duke. This story also leaves on a bit of a cliff hanger. Normally, I hate cliff hangers, for the most part, but it does work here, as it is not a cliff hanger for Leonard and Juliana - it is a cliff hanger on the suspense involving the greater family intrigue/danger, and leads to a future story and probably more directly involving the Duke. Leonard and Juliana get their HEA, and it is actually very sweet.

This story is filled with mystery and intrigue. Each character has a past and present that slowly comes to light as the plot progresses.

I found Leo's past the most intriguing and surprising. His character was a nice change of pace in comparison to heroes I have come across lately. Juliana had her moments where I was so worried for her and moments where I wanted to have a sit down talk about some of her actions. With that said, these two are nice match and the romance was well crafted.

The plot is well paced and kept me engaged all the way through. As we move through the story we meet quite a few secondary characters- some nefarious and others integral to what I am guessing will be future stories and future books.

I have to make a note here that Maria-a secondary character and Juliana's friend-outshone the heroine in my viewpoint. Maria was so brilliant and witty and smart. Her resourcefulness was astounding and I cannot wait to read her book!

I would recommend this story to any fan of historical romance who likes intrigue, suspense, and a slow unveiling of secrets in their stories.

This was my first book of Cheri Champagne. And I loved it! I have not read a Historical Romance in a long time, and this one might of just sucked me back in!

And the dual narration of Shane East & Zara Hampton Brown really brought it to life. Shane East is one of my one click narrators and this one was amazing!

Spicy
Historical Romance
Forced proximity

Troubled past

Juliana is running from an arranged marriage by her brother. When trying to get away she has a accident woods, leaving her stranded and covered in bl00d.
Leonard (Leo) found her half frozen and terribly afraid. He took her back to his home.

Juliana and Leonard keep their true identities secret from each other.

Leonard has a not-so-great reputation that he is trying to keep hidden, while trying to be a better person now that he is taking care of his orphaned niece.

Juliana needs a place to lay low and Leo is needing a governess for his niece. This is when the attraction starts to bloom, and the spice begins. The way things work out.

But it does not last long. Tensions start to get heightened as secrets start to come to light and they find out someone is after Juliana. But the chemistry and attraction between these two is amazing through the whole story!

I haven’t read a historical romance in quite a long time. I am not sure this particular series is for me, but I am excited to continue to dive back into the genre. I will say that listening to these two narrators was quite a treat. Thank you Must Love Audio for giving me an advanced listener copy.

-secret identities

this was such a quick fun read. i listened to the audios and both narrators did a fantastic job. i loved the accents and how you could feel the tension between the two main characters

this book had a lot of twists and turns and had a very interesting plot. i really loved the suspense and trying to figure out what was going on and how certain characters were connected.

overall i felt like the pacing was a bit off for my personal taste. some chapters moved really quick and others a bit slower but i think if you’re someone who enjoys historical romance you would still really love this book!!

This was a highly enjoyable read that drew me in with its unique opening and premise. Both Juliana and Leo, our leads, are shrouded in mystery from the beginning of the novel, as we know they have circumstances and pasts that they're running from, mysteries that are unravelled as the story unfolds and the characters grow closer.

What I enjoyed
- I was especially fond of Leo as the hero - you could tell despite his gruff exterior he had a caring and honourable heart, or else he would not be carrying around such strong guilt for years
- The little niece Elizabeth was an adorable addition to the cast, I loved all of her interactions with Juliana and Leo; I'm so glad she got the family she desperately needed by the end. It would have been nice to see more of her in the story!
- Juliana was intelligent, level-headed, and independent. She made for a great strong heroine who did not make dumb decisions, like so many in her genre seem to do.
- There weren't too many steamy scenes, but they were well done. I felt the intimacy between the two leads progressed naturally and they had great romantic and sexual chemistry.
- Percy the footman/close friend made for great comedic relief and a supportive influence for the MMC
- The plot and mystery had real stakes! There was actual peril.
- The story/cliffhanger was intriguing and had me wanting more, despite my lukewarm feelings toward Juliana's brother.

What I thought could have been improved
- I did not care for the brother and Maria subplot; it's obvious they're being set up as the leads for the next novel in the series but I found there was too much of them in this story.
- Juliana's motivation: We know throughout the story that Juliana has an unorthodox career goal she is trying to make her way towards, but it isn't until near the end that we find out exactly what that goal is. Because of the late reveal, I wasn't at all invested in her career motivations.
- The prologue ruined a lot of the mystery of the book.
- The pirate portion of Leo's backstory was so interesting but got so little page time!
- Leo's near panic attack seemed to come out of nowhere at the end of the book (yes, he was living as a recluse but that was a self-inflicted exile, not because he was uncomfortable around people). I would have liked to see more of his social anxiety as it's a unique feature in a historical hero.

Overall, this was a fun and sexy historical romp with a strong thriller/mystery subplot. I will keep an eye out for Champagne's future releases!

3.5 squeaked up. I'm squeaking up because the setup was intriguing; the pacing was decent, with a good amount of tension and action; the chemistry between the MC's worked well; and I liked Leo as a hero. I thought his past as a pirate was interesting and I actually wanted more details about him after the book ended.

A few things kept this from a higher rating:
--action was bogged down a bit by HR language cliches, especially in the first half. Also, the angsty Big Secret stuff could have been smoothed out by the two MC's simply having an adult conversation. Plotwise, the identity of the bad guy required earlier foreshadowing. He and his motives feel shoehorned in. The pace toward the end is rushed.
--Juliana's occasional TSTL behavior and dialog. At times it was difficult buying her as a strong female lead.
--Juliana's brother, Jasper, is a flat character. The end of the book implies he will likely be the focus of the next book, as everything ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, but I just didn't find Jasper that appealing.
--Last nitpick: as much as I liked Leo, I absolutely hate it when MMC's have sex with MFC's without taking any precautions, when they have no intention initially of marrying (especially when they think their bed partner is working- or servant-class). So I deduct one point from his Book Boyfriend status.

I would recommend this as an escapist read, if you don't take it too seriously.

There were lots of things going on in this book, but it somehow managed to come together. Many past events were alluded to. At one point, I actually stopped reading to see if this book was from the middle of a series. Turns out, it is the beginning of a new series and most of my unanswered questions were clarified as the story progressed.
I enjoyed the romance of Leo and Juliana. I think that there was enough between the two of them to have made a complete story. The added intrigue was not actually needed, but it made things more exciting. I admit that I did roll my eyes whenever Juliana thought about the new life that she wanted to start--never mind that she already had a good man and a sweet child who probably loved her and would be hurt when she left them!
I also enjoyed the family intrigue with Juliana and her brother Jasper. More of those details will probably be revealed in the next book. The part of the book that I enjoyed the least was Juliana's friends and their future ambitions. As ordinary spinsters they would have been fine. However, spinsters in stories rarely wish to remain ordinary!
I enjoyed reading this book even though I did not care for certain aspects of it because I felt they were unnecessary. Some interesting hints were dropped for the next book, so I'm eager to read it!

Fear & Fortitude was my first book by Cheri Champagne and I was drawn in from the first second! Lady Juliana has been betrothed to a contemptible man who is many years her senior. Not one to sit idly by and let men run her life, Juliana devises a plan to flee to a trusted friend. When her carriage is waylaid, Juliana is rescued by a handsome stranger. Leonard Notley is a reformed bad boy, guardian to the sweetest, brightest little girl, and blindsided by his attraction to the mysterious damsel who landed on his doorstep. Juliana’s instant rapport with Lizzy was so sweet. The brooding, tattooed gentleman and the secretive, brassy lady couldn’t resist their attraction for long (despite Leo’s best efforts). I loved their banter. I didn’t know I needed a single-guardian, action-adventure, Regency romance in my life, but I’m hooked. I need to know what happens next in the Bow Street Wallflowers series!

Shane East and Zara Hampton-Brown were lovely as Leo & Juliana! They brought the story’s blend of courtly propriety and captivating suspense to life superbly. I couldn’t stop listening! I enjoyed Shane and Zara’s pacing and dynamic character choices. Fear & Fortitude was a fun experience and I can’t wait for the next book!

What a wild ride! Juliana was fleeing from an unwanted arranged marriage when she was involved in a carriage accident. Leonard (Leo) found her half frozen, near death, and terribly afraid. He took her back to his home to recuperate, and she ended up becoming his niece Lizzy’s governess. Attraction and tension abound, and so does an external danger. There is never a dull moment, and between hot kisses and villianous narratives, this story will keep you riveted and on edge. Secrets, fear and guilt rule the day as Juliana and Leo flee an unknown enemy and fight their desire for one another. Assumptions and misunderstandings drive them apart as they navigate their way through gunshots, fire, and snowstorms. Leo’s reputation and hinted at background adds another layer of mystery to a tale filled with self-recrimination, yearning and denial. The characters are varied and intriguing, and the ending will have you shaking your head and gritting your teeth. It is a well written and well thought out story, and I anxiously await the next book in the series!.

Juliana and Leonard

I like a historical romance thrown in the mix every once in awhile and this was a great one if it’s not your normal genre. We have a fierce FMC who is bucking the system after finding out about an arranged marriage her brother had set up. The dynamic between Juliana and Leonard was a lot of fun and he quickly becomes protective of the woman he finds wandering on his land. Love the family drama, the chemistry between the main characters, and the suspense throughout the story.

These narrators are always perfect together. They really shine in this dual style narration. The way they both portray their opposing characters with such emotion is impressive. Their performances really brought life to this story.

He helps her by taking her home and getting a doctor to see her. Sick for a few days, she recovers and tries for a job as governess to Leo's niece. After a few days , the terror begins again. She has feelings that someone is there watching her. She wants to return to London, both realize that they have feelings for the other. Has steam between them. They set a trap to catch who is trying to kill her and her brother. Keeps you on your toes. A must read and a great page turner. Excellent book, can't wait for the next. A delightful series starter!

I enjoyed the story and read it through in one! The fast pacing plot is layered with romance, mystery, intrigue and passion. The characters are well developed and very likable.

When Juliana elopes from her brother in order to flee an unwanted marriage, she would never have thought that she might be followed by a killer…

Leo lives a reclusive and guilt ridden life with his little niece. When he finds Juliana half frozen and blood tainted on his property, he takes her home and hires her as a governess for his niece.

Both are attracted to the other, but do not want to deviate from their plans or are prepared to reveal their secrets. And the unknown killer is still waiting to strike again…

If you like charming and quick Regency romances with intrigue and suspense, you will certainly enjoy this story.

Fear and Fortitude by Cheri Champagne is the first in a new series from the author.

It is set in Regency England and features a disgraced nobleman who rescues a woman in his woods. The woman, Juliana, is fleeing a forced marriage. She pretends to be a servant and is hired to be a governess to Leonard's niece.

She plans to hide on Leonard's estate until the weather improves enough to travel to London.

Unfortunately, a killer tracks her to the estate. She has to travel to London despite the weather, to prevent injuries to the child and her uncle.

I became frustrated with the amount of cursing from the characters, as it is anachronistic. The author provides trigger warnings at the beginning, including the language.

I will likely seek out the additional novels in the series when they are released.

This was an intriguing and often intense story. I admired Lady Julianna’s spirit, she is a woman of capable means who does not require saving. She is determined to live a life of her own choosing and will go to extreme lengths to make it so. Leo has been dealt a bad hand, choosing to live as a recluse he needs Julianna to bring him out of his shell. The quick bond between Julianna and his ward was such a tender storyline, I loved it. The tension of their romance was fabulous and the mystery intense enough to keep you on your toes. I was quite impressed with this new to me author.
Additionally, the audio is masterfully done by Shane East & Zara Hampton-Brown. These two make a fantastic team. I have had the pleasure of listening to them together numerous times and they are one of my fav duos.

Juliana and Leonard's Story . . .

Lady Juliana Sinclair refused to be forced into an arranged marriage. She is found in the woods by Leonard Notley who is hiding with his young ward. He wants to help her as she tells him of a carriage accident where was stuck in the carriage for more than a day and became lost until he finally found her. As she recovers, she takes on the task of governess to his ward, Lizzy. But even being sequestered in the woods does not stop the excitement as they try to resist their attraction to each other. There is danger as well which provides tension and suspense to keep the reader intrigued. With both of them escaping their pasts, will they finally find peace, healing, and a HEA with each other?

If your looking for a smutty angsty regency romance with great individual scenes that are highly entertaining with a fast paced story that hops between emotional scenes than this is a good option, but if you like nuance and a well structured cohesive plot that flows well you’ll likely struggle on this one.
The story had a lot of potential with really interesting scenes but the author didn’t write noticeable transitions and it made the story feel choppy and incomplete to me.

Fear and Fortitude is a historical romance with suspense, forced proximity, with a secret identity element. Juliana is a sister of a Duke who is on the run after being arranged to marry. During her flee, she is attacked by an unknown man. This attack leads her to seek care from Leo who has his own secrets to hide. Leo and Juliana become intwined as they both work to come to terms with their own secrets and their growing feelings as danger looms at every turn.
Cheri Champagne wrote a historical romance filled with angst and all the suspense which was heightened by Shane East and Zara Hampton Brown's narration. I look forward to reading more from Cheri.

I love audiobooks with different accents and this one did not disappoint! Zara and Shane did a wonderful job with these characters!

I love these two together! Both of them had secrets and emotional pain they were holding on to. I really loved how Juliana really fought for what she wanted. She was strong and brave and while Leo was a little gruff on the outside, he was actually very sweet.

The author had some good world building and while Juliana and Leo’s story is complete, we are left with a cliffhanger leading to the next book!

This historical romance has just the right blend of steam and intrigue. There is a plot that drives this story with drama all along the way.

A girl running from the demons of her past and a haunted pirate hiding from his past. Together they will fight for a new self identity for each other; to shed the past, to stand up tall, and walk into the light from the darkness that has been plaguing them.

I really hope that there will be a story about the brother or other side characters.

I haven't listened to a regency romance prior to now but I was in the mood for something different and decided to give this audiobook a listen. You get mystery, adventure, romance and a little bit of spice all nicely wrapped up in one story. Everything tied up nicely in the end and there just enough of a hint for the next book to leave you wanting it but not feeling like you're being left on a cliffhanger.

As always, Shane East and Zara Hampton-Brown give a wonderful performance in their narrations. It's a fun read and looking forward to the next one.

The heroine is trying to get away from a forced marriage, but she doesn’t get far before she needs help. The hero finds her and takes her home. He is a man who doesn’t have much self worth and a ward who depends on him. They are attracted to each other, but trust is hard to given. Will they learn to believe in their feelings or will she be taken back? It was a good read.

Despite a very interesting premise this just didn’t work for me. I found the writing very lacking and basic. A lot of the characters inner thoughts got very repetitive and even silly at times. I kept reading because I wanted to find out what happened but I was very tempted just to stop. None of the characters felt real and there were far too many different POVs, the villain’s one felt especially unnecessary. There was definitely some potential here in the story just wasn’t well executed.

Lady Juliana Sinclair has run away from being forced into marriage and she is lost in a snowy forest. She is found by Leonard Notley but he has trouble trusting his attraction to her. Can he trust her and will he protect her?

I enjoyed this book. I look forward to more books in this series.

This story is awesome!!

I'm new to this author and was not disappointed!! The story was well written and kept me guessing to the end. Other than the main characters, I enjoyed getting to know the friends and siblings that may hopefully lead into the next book/s.
Can't wait for book 2!!
