In this collection of 120 poems, what Rick Ellsmore calls autobiographical poetry, is the common journey all of us share about coming to terms with ourselves. It's a reflection of his journey toward finding the courage to truly accept and love himself-and discovering that his real name is RLove. That, in fact, we are all love. It is hope, joy, pain, and fear that make up the foundation, calling us into beauty; it's within this holy place that we are welcomed into the intimacy of love.
There are books of poems, and there are poems that are books. Dancing DNA is both — and more. It also folds in images and many of the poems use indentations and lay the words as shapes. It is effective and enhances the reading where it’s like water flowing over rocks in a stream. The words become fluid. Sometimes being graceful and dancing, other times splashing and it’s as if you can feel the splash of words hit you.
And that makes sense as the book, as stated, is a collection of poems that is a book of the poet’s life during the time period the work reflects. Divided into sections, when reading you begin to experience the work as individual poems — and tome of the poet’s life and feelings. That is a major accomplishment as it is not maudlin or self indulgent. It has an underlying hope for a better day after some that were not kind. All are told with a clear vision of things behind are best left there and not wanted ahead. Change, hurt, sadness… those are shared and remind us that those are the very things that open doors ahead. I liked that the book was written long enough after the mentioned life changes to speak to where they led. Many times such introspective work is of hope when young, followed by despair when at a point of a life change.
This is a story of despair leading to hope and a better day.
I think the real hurt expressed early on followed by the equally real search for healing and happiness is something we’ve all experienced and can relate to. The poet clearly is putting himself in every word and you will get to know him — and find his poems do what poetry does best — express how it feels to be here. That we are all flowing like water down a stream that is calm around one turn, then a raging current of rapids and falls the next. And what comes next is what comes next.
Highly recommended — especially if you are new to reading poetry.
