Hope Springs #2

Hope Springs

Rate this book
All is not well in Wyoming. Katie Macauley gave up her life-long dream of returning to Ireland in order to make a home for herself in Hope Springs, but her future has never been so uncertain. The town is more divided than ever, with both the Irish and the Reds stealing property, burning buildings, and endangering lives.

Katie’s heart remains sharply divided between her love for playful Tavish and steady Joseph, a decision she feels ill-prepared to make. In the midst of the growing unrest, temperatures drop quickly, too quickly, and Irish nightmares of famine and cold resurface as the little Wyoming town struggles to beat the harsh winter.

Katie makes one sacrifice after another to keep the peace and help see her loved ones through the difficult days ahead, but will it be enough? Can the town make amends before their hatred consumes them all? And will Katie find the love she has been searching for as well as a home to call her own?

I'm in Utah for some not fun hospital tests. I downloaded lots of audio and Ebooks in preparation for this trip, which is taking the better part of a week. Do you know, a good book can make everything feel better? There's nothing like it for me.

Hope Springs, the second book of a duology, was the perfect comfort read. You must read the first book, it's like part one and part two of the same story. Western historical romance set in the tiny Wyoming town of Hope Springs. Katie has come all the way from Baltimore to accept a position as a housekeeper, her end goal has always been to return to her parents in Ireland. Love and courtship happen, but there's a bigger story being told. The Irish famine has left physical and emotional scars on Katie and many of her kinfolk. A town is divided in two, the Irish road and the Red road. So much hatred, ugly acts on both sides, and a widower with two daughters caught in the middle.

Confession: I actually CRIED, like 2 or 3 tears, over a speech made at a funeral. I KNOW! Maybe my heart grew 3 sizes or something and I'm going down to Whoville to sing Da-hoo-doe-ray. The ending was still happy. Also, my feels punched me in the heart over Finbar.

Questions:
The man who didn't get picked...will he get a story someday? Katie picked the one I've been rooting for in both books, but the other guy is such a good man. Will Sarah Eden throw him a bone?
Secondly, I'm imagining that 8 year old Emma, the most serious child ever, is going to grow up and marry that one older boy someday. Please, oh please SE, will you write that story for me?

AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! Now that is a book! I am just sooo happy and sooo sad it is all over! What an ending. I was so worried before I picked this book up that it would be a middle filler book that it would end in a cliff hanger but the ending was beautiful. I laughed, I cried, I cheered for joy. What a beautiful book and what a way to tell a story! I can not say enough good about this book and about this author. The Characters were amazing and came completely alive for me. I loved each of them and couldn't wait to see how this would end. I love that the story showed how one person can make a difference and I loved a little history thrown in. Perfect Sarah Thank you!

Sarah Eden has written a sequel that, in my opinion, is better than the first! I loved revisiting the town of Hope Springs. Katie is one of my favorite characters. She is strong and vulnerable at the same time. She has a heart of gold and tries her best to help out her neighbor, or anyone else she sees in need. She has sacrificed so much of herself, her time, and her talents to enrich the lives of others.

The book holds a love triangle. At the end of the first book I thought that it had been resolved only to discover that it has grown more complex. I had a strong opinion of who I thought should be the hero to claim Katie's heart. Sarah was able to make me waver in my resolve and see that the reader is not always right.

The book continues the war between the Irish and everyone else. The town is divided. The settlers are vehement in their hatred and fear that the Irish have come to take away their jobs and threaten their peace and security. The Irish only want a place to call home. They want to work to take care of their families and have peace and prosperity. I found it ironic that the name of the town is Hope Springs, many of the residents are low on hope.

The book is beautifully written and will tug on your heart strings in one way or another. I would highly recommend that the first book, "Longing For Home" is read before this one. This book is clean, there is some violence and a little bit of kissing.

Book 1 in the series almost ripped my heart out, with all of the heartbreak and the love triangle because really...what's not to love about either guy? If one of them was a jerk, it would be an easy choice to see one of them go. Needless to say, it ended on a note that left me hanging and wanting more.

I finally had a chance to sit down and read this one and wow--I was once again blown away by the amazing way that Eden is able draw a reader right into the heart of the story. It doesn't hurt that my name is the same as the main character and that I used to play the violin, but hey, I really felt the joys and struggles of this town, which is divided by prejudice.

I have to say it--doesn't Hope Springs have any law enforcement? Where are the Sheriffs of Savage Wells when you need them (bad joke in reference to one of the author's other novels)? The way the tempers, anger, and hatred escalates is alarming, especially when bad things start to happen that really shouldn't. WHY can't people realize that human beings aren't that different from one another and race or origin shouldn't matter?! I guess I got a little emotionally worked up over this novel, but that's the sign of a true, gifted author.

The characters are great. Katie is so strong and resourceful and willing to sacrifice herself for the common good, which really makes everyone adore and love her, including the reader. Although she seemingly made her choice in Book 1, neither man will give up until it's over and they're both fantastic. I loved the nuances of all of the relationships, both good and bad, and enjoyed watching the effects and results of difficult events. This is a book worth reading.

Content: mild romance; mild violence and moments of peril; harsh words/name calling, but no swearing; very mild references to religion.

*I received a copy through Netgalley, which didn't influence my opinion. All thoughts are my own.*

This was a rough one for me. I usually love Sarah Eden, but this story was not my favorite. I liked the way the first book ended. I fell in love with Tavish and was happy with her choice to pick him. I felt like Tavish was portrayed entirely differently in this book (and even somewhat of a jerk). The author probably did that so we would root for Joseph. If I'd read this book alone, I probably would have liked it better. It was a great story for Joseph, and was definitely written in a way to make you want him for Katie. However, as I said before...the first book won me over with Tavish so my mind was already made up before I even read this one.

Once again, Sarah M. Eden delivers a romantic and deeply touching story. I loved the historical time period and the conflict between the Irish and Americans. So fascinating. Read LONGING FOR HOME first, and now you won't have to wait for this sequel HOPE SPRINGS. Worth every minute!

Hope Springs is a book I've been anxiously anticipating since I closed the last page on the first book in the Longing For Home series. There is a love triangle introduced in the first book that had me leaning heavily in one direction, and at the end of that book I had reason to believe that my favorite hero would win the lady, but I wouldn't find out until the next book. I tried to weasel any hints from the author, Sarah Eden, but she played it cagey and didn't spill even one bean.

You can imagine my mood then, when I started Hope Springs. I wanted my favorite guy to win! Within just a few chapters, however, I put aside my bias and lost myself in the story. Our heroine, Katie is embroiled in a town feud between the Irish and the non-Irish that has escalated into beatings, thieving, and burning down property. It all brings back memories of what she suffered in Ireland before coming to America, but Katie has an iron will and won't give up on trying to make things better for the people she's come to love in this town. She has such a tortured past and is such a great character, I stayed up until 2 a.m. reading because this story is so compelling. (And for a mother of eight, that is a huge sacrifice and one I don't make for just any book!)

Of course, in the middle of this "war" Katie is still trying to sort out her feelings for the two men and Sarah Eden is masterful at pulling the reader in to experience every emotion the heroine has inside her. I'm not going to give away which man she chooses or how the feud ends, but the emotional depth is so well done I closed the book with a happy sigh.

This is a historical series that you don't want to miss. It's authentic, it's layered, and has characters that are memorable. Five stars from me!

This second book was even sadder than Hope Springs but it also brought resolution to the loveline and the conflict between Irish and the Red Road.

Of course, people got hurt and it was a hard road but I feel satisfied. Also knowing that Tavish finds his Ceece on his own book and Finbar does recover and learns to adapt and live despite his blindness, made things easier. I hope he gets his own book someday!

This series could be my favorite of Sarah Eden’s. This book ripped my heart out of my chest and then very sweetly put it back again. It was emotional and intense, but oh so sweet and rewarding! On to book 3 because I need a happy ending for a certain character that I love.

Katie Macauley has decided to stay in Hope Springs, but her life there is far from happy. She's troubled by the feelings she has for both Tavish O'Connor and Joseph Archer. With both men interested in her, Katie has to figure out which one she'll choose, but she doesn't know how to figure out what she even wants. At the same time, the feud between the Irish and non-Irish settlers continues to escalate. With beatings, fires, thievery, and more, the town is on the brink of destruction. Katie is determined to help solve the problems and does everything she can think of to keep the peace, but her efforts might not be enough to withstand the hatred fueling the fire.

I think Katie is a fantastic character; she's strong and independent but at the same time, so hurt by her past and the guilt that she feels, making her a very real character. I like how she's so determined to help those around her. I think Sarah M. Eden did a good job showing why Katie ended up picking the man she picks....but if you don't mind spoilers, see below for my one qualm about that.

I really wanted her to pick Tavish; I like him. He's funny and handsome and Irish--all great things. I actually read the last page before I even started the book because I needed to know if Katie and Tavish end up together....which they do not. :( (I can only hope that in his own time, and hopefully his own book, Sarah Eden gives him the right woman for him.) Joseph turned out to be the better choice; Katie needed someone who believed in her and worked with her, which Joseph did, instead of someone who believed in her and wanted to do everything for her, like Tavish. Okay, I get that. I can accept that. Joseph's better for her. However, this is my problem with Joseph: he's so determined to stay out of the feud and not to pick sides, but I think he SHOULD have picked sides. The "Red Road" hates the Irish simply because they are Irish; the Irish hate the Reds because they're always causing trouble for them and putting them down and overcharging them and stuff. I'm not saying anyone is right to hate anyone, but the Reds' prejudice against the Irish simply because of their nationality is wrong, and by Joseph not doing anything about that, it seems like he's accepting that. It makes me think of the saying, "Evil thrives when good men do nothing." So, I have a hard time completely liking Joseph, because I wish he would have picked a side and told the Reds that it's wrong to hate the Irish for being Irish! (And if he would have just kicked Bob Archibald off his land sooner, maybe a lot of the problems would have been prevented.)

Hope Springs is a really great story. The first book in the series, Longing for Home, was good, but Hope Springs absolutely made Katie's story!

The feud between the Irish and the non-Irish in Hope Springs was heartbreaking. I loved Katie's character and her determination to help those around her. It would have been so easy to throw in the towel and leave, but that's not Katie. Through extreme adversity she did her best to make things better for everyone.

I cried at least once. Hope Springs is a sweet, touching, and clean story that not only has a great romance, but has a wonderful lesson about loving others even when they are different. It also has a good depiction about how prejudices are divisive and dangerous.

This is quite a bit longer than most of Sarah's stories, so it took longer to read, but several times I didn't want to put it down and ended up staying up much too late.

If you are a fan of romance novels, you can't go wrong with Sarah's books.

I read the first in this series and was a little frustrated by the lack of closure. I had invested time reading 400 pages of basically a set up for the sequel. But, the sequel was SO good. I went through so many emotions. Hope Springs has been on the verge of a civil war between the Red Road and Irish Road for years and years. In this book it all comes to a head. Katie is trying to find her place and keep the peace... while struggling with feelings for 2 different men. 2 GOOD men. Usually in a love triangle story there's one guy you root for more. But in this book I had a hard time choosing the "better man." (My choice did win out overall... ;) This isn't a fluff read. There's violence, & bigotry, & death. But it's a good reminder that hatred and bigotry never leads to anything good.

Any book that keeps me craving to go back to it is a good book. This was a series I had a hard time putting down. I love the characters, love the plot, love the conflicts. I spent a good chunk of this book crying both happy and sad tears. It's far more tragic than you usually see in romance novels, but it worked for the story and I'm glad the author didn't pull any punches.

So, yeah. I thought it was okay during the first read, but this time, I really fell in love with the story.

NOTE: You'll definitely want to read this series in order! (If you haven't read "Longing for Home" book 1, stop right now and go read that book first!)

***************
Katie Macauley is making a life for herself in Hope Springs, baking bread for her friends on the Irish Road and being courted by Tavish O'Connor. Life hasn't gotten much easier, though. She is still troubled by her father's illness and plagued with guilt over her sister's death.
The conflict between the Red Road and the Irish Road also continues, with increased prices, thefts, fires, and other damage occurring more and more frequently on either side. Katie is determined to help her neighbors through the coming winter, and is willing to risk her own comfort and safety to do so.

Tavish loves Katie but continues to mourn Bridget. His time and energy is focused on helping his family through injury and harvest season. Still, he tries to ease Katie's burden through laughter and encourages her to stay out of harm's way.

Joseph Archer sends Katie away to live with Granny Claire. He worries for her safety -- and the safety of his two daughters -- if she continues to work and live in his home. This finally gives him a chance to appropriately court Katie himself. He loves her interactions with his girls and supports her various efforts and ideas. As the major land-owner/lender, Joseph still carries the burden of mediator between the opposing groups. His intentions are good, but his attempts to strong arm the people into getting along remind Katie of the cruel land-owners in Ireland.

***************
I loved that we finally get some closure for Katie! This book and its prequel are as much the story of Hope Springs (Red Road versus Irish Road) as they are about Katie Macauley overcoming her past and finding love.

OVERALL: Very clean. Mild romance. The only kissing happens at the very end in short, tender scenes (descriptive, but not passionate).
Themes include: hatred, bigotry, peril, physical injury, fear; forgiveness, healing (physical, emotional and social); family relationships

Wonderful conclusion to a good series. Well, at least I think that’s the end. It’s book two of two. I’ll have to see there’s more.

It always amazes me when there seems to be no reason for hatred and a deeply held prejudice. One person seemed to stir up the whole group to hate the Irish who just wanted to live peaceably. A certain landowner could have done so much more to help with the conflict, but he chose to be neutral. But when fire, death and beatings escalated he had to step in.

Prayer, church and characters verbally expressing their faith with each other was an inspiration.

This might be a bit violent for a younger reader, but there was a very clean romance that was just what a YA+ reader would be happy with.

Being Irish in a small frontier town in Wyoming isn’t precisely a walk in the park. An open brawl in the park might be more like it...

The feud between American and Irish settlers is only worsening, not resolving as Katie had been hoping. They haven’t stopped at bloodshed, at destruction by fire, at discriminatory pricing at the general store...will they even stop at death? You’ll be sure to cry over this story!

Perfect

I love this book and how Ms. Eden carefully crafted the characters in this book. I love the romance between Katie and Joseph while they come together to solidify their union for the town to see. I love how they both adapt to life’s cruel adjustments from a long arduous feud between the Irish and the townsfolk who would let go of the past. It would only take a miracle from Katie and Finnbar to finally find the arsonist and murderer just in time.

Katie Macauley has made the decision to stay in Hope Springs. Tensions in the town are worse than ever and both sides are contributing to the chaos. Katie learns a negotiating tactic from Joseph and is able to figure out a way to help the Irish make it through the winter. There's a real fear that something tragic will have to happen in order to wake people up and start to look for ways to get along.

Even though there are some difficulties, I love Hope Springs! The Irish pull together to help each other out and still find time to have fun and enjoy each other. I enjoyed learning more about the Irish and some of their customs and traditions. They are a fun group and the Reds missed out by not getting to know them better.

I also love the big part that music plays. Katie's music helps calm people down and brings joy in some otherwise tense situations. She feels some guilt for having stolen the fiddle from her father when she was younger and I was glad that she was able to get some closure for that in the end.

There is a love triangle and she made a decision at the end of book one. However, we quickly realize that she's still torn between the two so they are both still in the picture. I felt like around the middle of the story, one of them practically disappears and his scenes are really short when he does appear, so I would have to say that, based on that, I'm happy with her final decision.

This is a wonderful series that I highly recommend to anyone that enjoys reading clean historical romance! It will make you laugh, cry, scream, worry, smile and finally sigh when the final page is turned!

I am in love with Hope Springs. The whole of it. I swear Sarah Eden weaves magic into her books. This book is the second in the Longing for Home series.

The characters in this story are well developed. They feel like real people and it makes me feel as if I know them personally. I became emotionally invested and I love when my emotions become part of a book.

Katie is still Katie. It would seem she still feels as though she has something to prove and she continues to yearn for the validation and love from her parents she feels she has never received. Ghosts of the past still haunt her as she struggles to overcome and move on. Katie is full of goodness and sacrifice. The sacrifices she makes in this book will leave you breathless. It was an ending I didn't see coming. Just wow.

I'm glad we have resolution in the love triangle department. By the end of the book, Katie finally decides. Phew! I love both Tavish and Joseph. (Although Tavish wins in the name department. I love the name Tavish!)

The division between the Irish and the Reds is so tragic. Eden captures the feud so well. It's so senseless how we as people throughout time have shunned and hurt other people because they are different, because we don't take the time to care and understand. It really is awful. I loved reading about the Irish in this book- their speech, their customs, their music. :)

I love reading anything by Sarah Eden and this series is one of my favorites. I jumped on the review request right away! My thanks to Shadow Mountain for allowing me to read and review books for them. They are a great publisher.

After reading Longing For Home, and feeling disappointment, along with lack of closure, I had to immediately read Hope Springs. It's rare that a 2nd book is better than the first, but this is one of those times. This book is way more than just a romance. These are characters with real problems, it's not based on petty misunderstanding, or a constant questioning of feeling. The happy ending that does come, comes at a very high cost. I was weeping at the loss. I couldn't believe what the author put our heroine through. It upset me at first, because almost every time something happened that required rescuing, her rescuer was never there. I guess I've come to rely on that in most romance novels, but honestly Mrs. Eden has written a novel of a different caliber. It's refreshing actually. Though I have to say that I wouldn't have minded a teensy bit of a damsel in distress rescue.
Only a couple of things bothered me a bit. The almost Pollyanna ending. If you've seen Pollyanna you will know what I mean. I almost felt like I was reading a Little House on the Prarie episode as well. Parts of the story felt like they dragged out too long. Tavish being one of those. He started to really annoy. A few other minor things as well, but I don't want to spoil. It was a lovely read with depth that I will probably read again. Kudos to Sarah Eden for writing a book I will probably be thinking about for some time.

I've said it before...
and I am going to say it again...

I LOVE SARAH M EDEN'S BOOKS!

I love the way she writes!
I love the stories she chooses!

While this setting is different from her other "proper romances" set in England.

I LOVE the ruggedness of this Wyoming setting.

I love the hardships.

I love the way she portrays the feud between the Irish Road and the Red Road.

I love the determination of one woman trying to bring everyone together even though her life is probably the hardest hit.

Katie gave up her dream to go back to Ireland for she believes that HOPE Springs eternal...

She wants to make her life here...but with whom.

Her heart is torn between two good men.

Both make her happy...but which one is truly 'the one that will make her complete?'

The troubles seem to be escalating...stealing property, burning building, etc.

Joseph is afraid that a life will probably have to be lost before the feud will end.

Can he be right or can Katie help soften hearts and bring the town together at last?

Katie has forfeited her dream of returning to Ireland in exchange for the promise of a new home in Hope Springs, Wyoming. But the pall of hatred—a bitter feud between the Red-roaders and the Irish immigrants—looms over the promise of that future, until even the neutral ground of the Archer ranch is no longer safe.

Katie sacrifices her job, her lodging, her time, her savings, and even her meager income in the support of her Irish neighbors and peaceful relations between both ends of the community, all while trying to sort out the battle within her own heart between Tavish O’Conner and Joseph Archer. Will she ever have a home? Or will the feuding render all of her sacrifices useless?

Mmm. I loved this sequel! And while I enjoyed the first book, this was one sucked me in much faster and refused to let me go. Thoroughly satisfying. And quite the tear-jerker as well.
