Does Not Stand Out from the Pack

In Elijah: Remaining Steadfast Through Uncertainty Gene Getz follows his characteristic method of deriving timeless principles from biblical passages. His method has served him well in other books on the local church and stewardship. But in this particular book on Elijah (one of twelve in the Men of Character series) I did not benefit from his approach. Granted, these biographical studies are written as small group curriculum for men, not commentaries or in-depth expositions. Getz often uses the life of Elijah as a springboard to do a topical study of various themes related to issues men face. Consequently, significant portions of the book are not relevant to a study of the life and ministry of Elijah. A pastor or teacher will find some insights and illustrations along the way but nothing that stands out from the plethora of expositions on Elijah.

Getz's Men of Character series is helpful for what it is designed to be–a men's study–but it is not the best place for mining exegetical or expositional nuggets for a series of messages. Charles Swindoll's biographical studies, Great Lives from God's Word, will prove to be a better source for devotional and expositional gems.

Getz says, "God prepares us for big challenges in life by providing us with opportunities to face the smaller challenges victoriously" and"it is in the midst of situations that are beyond our control that really learn to pray." "God understands our anxieties , our fears, our disappointments, and our disillusionments."God is particularly responsive to our prayers when we are able to get beyond our own interest and concerns and focus on other people's needs-- but especially on His reputation."
