Ten years ago someone tried to kill her - Danielle Lewis's marriage to Jason Flynn brings together two warring crime families. It should be a joyous union. But someone tries to take her life - Danielle survives the shooting but loses her unborn son. She can't prove it, but she knows the shooting was related to the crime that both families trade in.Then Jason cheats on her, just when she needs hom most. And Danielle has had it. She leaves Dublin and her family behind.
Now she's back and she wants answers - After ten long years in exile in London, Danielle returns. Her homecoming threatens the uneasy truce that has existed between the Lewis's and the Flynn's ever since she left.
This is the first book in a new gangland crime series. The main character, Danielle, is a member of the notorious Lewis family. There were lots of storylines going on at the same time, and a lot of characters to try and remember. Danielle wants to know who gave the order to have her shot ten years ago. The characters are not all that likable but they all has their own agendas. The ending felt rushed and abrupt.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #JoffeBooks and the author #CaseyKing for my ARC of #Deceit
This is one of my favourite genres. Set in Dublin, it tells the story of two gang families. When Danielle Lewis returns home after the attempt on her life 10 years earlier, she has a reason now to return and wants answers.
It had quite a slow start and quite a few characters that came and went quite quickly so you couldn’t really connect with their back story. It did keep my attention at the beginning although at times I found myself losing the flow as there were so many parts that didn’t connect together with the story. I still think I’d be interested in reading where it goes from here as it did finish very suddenly. Also I think as this is the authors first book she hopefully will continue to improve as the writing is good and it’s a gritty thriller with lots of twists. it just needs maybe fewer characters and more development with them and the plot.
I really did like the look and sound of this book when i first saw it. I was eager to read and see what it was like. I was not disappointed at all with this read. What a cracker it turned out to be. The really good news is that the author has a second book to publish in December.
Good characters and a decent story line that will keep you gripped.
A great start introducing a new crime family. Returning from London Danielle is back in Ireland, back with her family and looking for answers to what took her away from Ireland in the first place. Not knowing who can be trusted and what lies ahead, Dani sets out to find answers.
I look forward to seeing what more this author has to offer, but I can see this being a great series.
Deceit by Casey King published 21st September with Joffe Books. It is a debut novel, the first book in The Dublin Thrillers and is described as ‘an explosive new gangland crime series packed with twists, turns and deceit.’
When Danielle Lewis arrives into Dublin airport she is met with an unexpected welcoming team. Having left home ten years previously, in an attempt to block out what had happened to her, Danielle is back and looking for answers. Danielle lost her unborn child following an attempt on her life and, afterwards, she understandably fell apart. The distance that grew between herself and her husband, Jason, sent him, unforgivably, into the arms of other women. When Danielle discovered this betrayal, it drove her to distraction. Leaving was her only option, in the hope of salvaging her peace of mind.
Ten years is a long time in gangland crime and, when Danielle returns to the fold, the dynamics have shifted. With the onset of more violence between warring families, Danielle finds herself propelled into an unanticipated position of power. Danielle takes this opportunity to uncover the truth of her past. Who tried to kill her? Who ruined her life? And, most importantly, who was responsible for the death of her unborn baby?
Deceit is a fast-moving debut that dives straight into the tale of two top crime families. There are multiple characters in this novel that does cause a little confusion at times but, once you grasp who’s who, it all aligns itself nicely. I do love grit in my crime fiction and I do like to feel I’m immersed in an authentic environment and Casey King pulls this off, with good reason. Casey King has first-hand experience of gangland crime as a member of An Garda Síochána and, with a diploma in Policing Studies, she has an abundance of knowledge. She certainly has the skill set, with all the ingredients there to formulate the perfect plot for a new crime fiction series. I personally would have liked to have read more of Danielle’s backstory as I do feel like I missed out on a chunk of background that was glossed over a little. I think there definitely is material for a prequel here. Unfortunately the ending was way too rushed for me which did taint my overall experience as I was left with an open mouth when I realised that that was the final page!
Deceit has a cast of very credible and nasty characters that really bring the book alive, alongside punchy dialogue and a frighteningly plausible plot. This is a solid debut and I honestly think that Casey King is a writer to watch. I would not be surprised if I heard a TV option was on the cards in the future!
Danielle Lewis left her family and disappeared to London a decade ago after being shot at and losing her unborn child. Now she is back and re-enters her family's criminal network. But can she find out who was responsible for her attack? Deceit is the first book in a new family drama and gangland crime series. However, the past plays a significant role in the plot developments and character behaviour. Dani fled after finding her lover had cheated on her, being shot at and losing her baby. She went through a lot of trauma and needed time to heal. Now she is ready to rejoin her family as well as find the truth about the past. The Lewis and Flynn rivalry has continued in her absence and her reappearance could shift the family dynamics. The book is written in the third person throughout so we see and understand a range of characters and their actions. Dani has a huge emotional burden but she is able to put it aside to focus on her purpose and support her family. Many of the characters are larger than life and there is a comic touch to some of the dialogue. There are a lot of intricate and entangled relationships that underpin the various plot strands. I enjoyed the different layers of plot which created a tense atmosphere and dramatic interactions between the characters. There is some violence as you would expect from this genre but it is not too graphic. Deceit is an entertaining novel and I look forward to reading future books in this series.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this eARC.
Casey King is a new author to me and I'm a big fan of gangland thrillers and this read looked like something I'd like. I think this is a good, well written easy gangland read where I didn't like a lot of the characters who all have their own agendas. Danielle returns home to her family after a 10 year absence and not everyone is happy she is back, or that she is expected to help in the family business. I felt this book had a slowish start with the introduction of several characters quickly and it took a while for me to familiarise myself with them. There are a lot of threads here and a lot going on in the story, which I felt did begin to pick up pace although I think the ending felt very abrupt and quite hurried. A good read overall, just not a great one. Saying that, my interest has been piqued and I think I'd like to read the next book to see how the characters develop. If you like gangland thrillers give this a go.
DECEIT by Casey King Pub Date: 21 Sep 2023 Review by michelle f, Reviewer Last updated on 6 Sep 2023 Casey King is another new author for me. This is a great book. Danielle lewis is back in the country after being shot and losing her unborn child. She is one of the infamous lewis clans who rule the Dublin city.. she wants answers on who gave the instruction to take her out, and in the process, they killed a met police officer.. Ged, her uncle, has left provisions that if anything happens to him that the businesses are left to danielle and not dean his son, which doesn't impress him.. WHO CAN YOU TRUST? WHO COMES OUT ON TOP? Great storyline.this book has it all murder, deceit, and families at war........ If you enjoy the gangland crime genre, i highly recommend this book
I am totally split by this book, it is reminiscent of a series that has been out in the last couple of years about London gangs and I loved it! I hoped I was going to love this too and I did - in parts. Danielle returns to her family after being away for a decade to find it has descended into something a lot more sinister than it ever was. Some of the characters were great, some didn't feel like they fit. There were a lot of storylines going on at the same time and lots of characters involved, which at times made it hard to follow. I found some of the decisions made by Danielle, totally unbelievable. I did enjoy it, but at times it felt too convoluted and long.
Debut author Casey King has taken me to the dark streets of Dublin for the first time (I don't think I've read a Southern Irish crime novel before to be honest, and it's a place I've yet to visit for real).
The opening chapters are fast paced and well written, I thought I was onto a winner BUT the ending comes in too fast and ruins the overall experience.
This is labelled "The Dublin Thrillers Book 1"...I'll wait on further instalments to see if Ms King builds on the good stuff or proves to be a one trick pony - but as I'd like to see these characters evolve I'm banking on the former...and who knows , one day I might find myself doing a Lewis / Flynn tour of the fair city where the girls are so pretty
If you are a fan of the TV show Kin, then you will probably enjoy there. There is nothing better than the internal musings of a crime family; made even better when the woman is the smartest one of them all. Yet, I couldn’t fully immerse myself in this book. Even though the author provides a lot of backstory on Danielle and her family, reading this book felt like being dropped in the middle of a series. I also wasn’t thrilled with the characters and didn’t invest myself in them. At the same time, I can acknowledge there was a lot of character building going on throughout the story. The ending had a lot of action and, while I don’t think I’ll grab it right away, I feel like Deceit was probably a good setup for what is next to come in the series.
Deceit by Casey King is the first book in the new gangland crime series set in Dublin. This book is about two gang families.
When Danielle Lewis returns home after the attempt on her life 10 years earlier, she has a reason now to return and wants answers. She will do anything to get these answers..............
This book is full of twists and turns throughout and a great start of a new series that just kept on giving. especially as Casey King is a new author to me. I am looking forward to the next book to this series.
Big Thank you to NetGalley and Joffe Books for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
‘It’s a story as old as time. Girl meets boy. They fall in love. Then it all falls apart. Ten years ago Danielle Lewis marries Jason Flynn to bring together their warring Dublin crime families. It should be a joyous union. But then someone tries to kill her.’ ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. I came across this author on Instagram and I’m so glad I did!! I even looked for other books, these are debut novels (I had a mini tantrum 🤣) although when I messaged (stalked) @crimewritingcrimefighting , I was assured there are more books to come 👏🏽! If you love a bit gangland crime … definitely try these books out. You won’t be disappointed.
this is. Authors first book and I so very much enjoyed as a big gangland reader. a very twisty and addictive book. Danielle Lewis fled. Ireland when she got shot and lost her baby. a policeman died.to save her. Danielle is part of the notorious gangland Family. She decides to go back to Ireland she is determined to find out who ordered the hit on her. but the day she sets foot in Ireland a chain of events starts this family has so many secrets. and someone does not want Danielle knowing. who ordered the hit? an amazing first book from this author can't wait to read Authors next book.
This book is very different as it is situated on the gangland side of things instead of the police. It's a very good start to a series, and it kept me guessing from beginning to end. Just when I thought I'd worked it all out, another twist showed my ideas were totally wrong. This is a gripping and capturing storyline and plot with lots of action. There are revelations and many twists with strong characters. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to other readers. My thanks to Joffe books for the advanced copy. This is my honest and unbiased review.
A down and dirty thriller. This is an earthy tale of rival family gangs in Dublin and of a member of one of these families returning after ten years to try to fight terrible wrong. The author tells the story well, with graphic details of the seamier side of the gangs operations, including drugs dealing, money lending and laundering, people smuggling, prostition, theft and insurance fraud. There is violence throughout. I'm not squeamish by any means, but I found it all somewhat unsavoury, and am at this stage not drawn to reading the sequel, but who knows?
This is book one in the Dublin Thrillers with the plot centred around two feuding, gangster families, The Flynns and the Lewis families. I really liked the early promise of the book as it started off at a fast pace. The characterisation was just a bit weak and I failed to empathise with any of the main characters. Danielle really irritated me at times and I struggled to keep my interest until the unexpected, sudden ending. It's a quick and easy read. Thanks to Joffe Books for my ARC.
This book is a completely unputdownable gritty and gripping gangland thriller (The Dublin Thrillers Book 1).
Ten years ago Danielle marries Jason Flynn in order to bring together their warring Dublin crime families. It should be a joyous wonderful occasion but them somebody tries to kill her,,,,
Danielle survives the shooting but loses her unborn son. She can’t prove it, but she knows the attack is an attempt to bring down her new family.
If you liked Kin or LoveHate, you'll love this. Deceit is a bird's eye view of the not-so-slow implosion of a Dublin crime gang. It feels very familiar, the characters feel real and their journey through the city is just as you'd know it. At times, for a few seconds, you find yourself thinking, 'That would never happen' and then you realise, it has and it does. It's fast and it's nasty! A real insight into how things might work in the Dublin underworld.
It gives Capulet and Montague vibes right off the bat. Read this book because I’m supposed to review the 2nd in the series. There are tons of characters in this book so it took a few chapters to get them straight. There are some pretty good twists that I didn’t see coming (I’m pretty good at predicting plot twists). All in all it was pretty decent, although the ending was rather abrupt for my taste.
For lovers of gangland thrillers the first book in a new series by Casey King is well worth the read. After a slow start the story picks up pace and off we go Danielle is the strong female character and you find yourself cheering her on throughout.Im looking forward to reading more in this series. Thanks to Netgalley and Joffe Books for the ARC.
Really struggled with this. Danielle returns home to Dublin after fleeing 10 years earlier after surviving being shot which resulted in the loss of her baby. She is looking for answers who tried to kill her? This involves her joining back in the activities of her family, one of the main Dublin crime families.
This is a really good debut book & I am so looking forward to the next book, plenty of action & double crossing also it is such an easy read & hard to put down. Definitely recommend this book & series. Casey King is so good at writing believable storylines & characters ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The story moves at a good pace and kept my interest. It's very suspenseful and the author does a good job of pulling the reader into the characters world. I enjoyed this! Special Thank You to Casey King, Joffe Books and NetGalley for allowing me to read a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
A gritty crime story. Although i felt the end was rushed which left me disappointed. and the begining was slow. Two gangland families unite by a marriage. There are a lot of characters so you have to keep on the ball otherwise you'll lose the plot. I do love a crime book but this one needs to stick to a handful of characters and their backgrounds to stop the confusion.
First book by this author - no comparison to Martina Cole I just found it a struggle to get through skimmed through the pages. Soooo many characters and names to remember. It was not as gripping as most of the gangland stories I’ve read. Not sure if I will even get through to part II which I purchased at the same time.
Excellent book loved it,this book has you gripped from start to finish and guessing who is in the wrong.I will definately be reading more from Casey King 5*
