I write post apocalyptic science fiction both on my own account and with Mike Kraus, as well as space opera and fantasy. And one or two other bits and bobs.
Based in the south of England, I've been writing since my teens, alternating between funny and serious. In the mid 1990s, I became a regular columnist for PC Pro magazine and have written a number of business and craft books over the years.
Fiction is my first love, however - I hope you enjoy my voyages into an uncertain future.
The second half of the excellent After the Apocalypse series.
While I read each of the five Future’s Fall books as they were released, I have to say having the complete series in a single collection is the way to feed your post-apocalyptic adventure addiction – and in my case I jumped at the opportunity to by this complete series box set.
I have no doubt you could read this series without first reading the Nightfall series, but without the foundation laid out in the Nightfall series you would miss the connections as the story progresses. I’ve included my reviews for each of the books in this series.
Future’s Fall Book 1
An excellent sequel to Kevin Partner’s Nightfall series!
I read each episode of Kevin Partner’s Nightfall series and by the end I felt like the characters were old friends, some closer friends than others, but friends non the less. Additionally, the post-apocalyptic America he envisioned became a very familiar world. So, when I was offered an Advance Reader Copy of After the End, the start to another post-apocalyptic set in the not-so-distant future of the world from Nightfall I jumped at the chance.
I’ll be honest, I was expecting the story to be a bit different – you know populated by all my friends from before. I soon learned this future story had a few characters from the earlier timeline, the focus was on the future world, how it works, how the Foundation still tried to run everything and how a few good people could exist in their current world. Not only did I find myself fully engaged in this world and the situations Mr. Partner presented, I came to find myself not wanting to put the story down, nor wanting it to end. But all good stories do end, however, in this case I know there is more to come, and I really want to follow this series because I’m fully invested in the characters and their stories. As I said I received an Advance Reader Copy and chose to provide this review.
Into the Dark Book 2
The further adventures of Ruben Bane are filled with action and intrigue. Into the Dark is an excellent follow-up to After the End, while the first book provides a good introduction to Ruben Bane, this book not only exposes more of his character, but it also provides a deeper look into Rubens traveling companions. Ruben has a knack for attracting strays as he journeys to find Hannah. I’m not sure if this book is better than the first, or if they are equals, what I can say is this series is great and does an outstanding job taking over where the Nightfall series left off. The more of Kevin Partner’s book I read the more I want to explore his back catalogue.
Over the Edge Book 3
Ruben’s identity is revealed by an old friend. I’ve come to realize there are three types of book/eBook series; those that I read the first installment and realize it’s not for me, those that I read the first book and want to read the others but don’t make them a priority, and the last group are those where I read the first book, subscribe to the author’s email list and anxiously await each new installment. The Future Falls series fits right into that third category for me, and Over the Edge, the third installment was well worth the wait. Not only was this an action-packed story, but it also had plenty of intrigue and answered a question I’ve been trying to answer from the first book. If you are like me, you have been guessing Ruben’s identity from the start of the series, I was certain I knew the answer until reading Over the Edge, and now I can say I certainly was wrong about his identity. If you want to know who he was, you’ll have to read this book. There is also a new character from the Nightfall series who shows up and provides plenty of tension in Ruben’s life. If you have read the previous installments in this series, you really need to read this one.
Guardian of Yesterday Book 4
Can Bane save the future, or will the past thwart him?
Guardian of Yesterday, the fourth book in the Future’s Fall series is without a doubt the best of the series, not just because of the action, or the various character interactions, but because it begins to tie the entire series together as well as making the tie to the Nightfall series clear. Parts of the story are bittersweet, leaving the reader to wonder how much loss Reuben Bane can endure. To figure out what this is about, you will just have to read the book for yourself. As much as I’ve enjoyed this series, I’m not sure how the fifth and final book will leave my feeling, traveling across the apocalyptic United Sates with Reuben has been a journey that I’m in no hurry to have end.
Child of Tomorrow Book 5
Will Reuben Bane succeed in his quest- all is revealed! Child of Tomorrow is such a bittersweet story, coming to an end of a series is always like this, but in this case, I’ve been on this journey since the first book of the Nightfall story following Elijah Wade’s cross county journey and then fast forward 35 years later in the Future’s Fall series following Ruben Bane on his quest to find Hannah and bring her to the Arc.
In the case of the Future’s Fall series, it is near impossible not to mention the Night Fall series since they are so closely related. Through these 12 books in both series, Kevin Partner has crafted a world populated by a cast of very well-developed characters who have personal flaws yet are easy to identify with and folks you find yourself rooting for in their various challenges/adventures.
If you enjoy Post-Apocalyptic Adventures the Future Fall series is sure to keep you entertained through all six books, but for the best experience make sure you read the Nightfall series first. Having read several series from Kevin Partner I can honestly say Nightfall and Future’s Fall are my favorites of Kevin’s library of works.
I really enjoyed this series and read the books as soon as I able as they came out. Rueben is a complex and relatable MC and the other characters were engaging as well. Rueben is a prickly personality, gruff with a softer side that is difficult to see at times, he grabbed me from the start, and I had to follow his journey. I'm glad I did as he found a satisfying end.
Kev Partner writes amazing stories that draw you in from the start and don't let go until the end. Buy this series you certainly won't regret it and if you a first time reader then check out Kev's other books as well. I have been privileged to be an Arc reader for Kev for sometime now after I read some of his earlier books and he has remained one of my favourite authors from the start.
As a fan of post apocalyptic books I liked the way the different characters handled the change in their lives. Everyone reacts differently to a situation. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes post apocalyptic books. I gave the book four stars because it kept me interested in what was happening and what was going to happen.
… from the beginning, to the end!!! A lots of action and so detailed descriptions of people and places, has build up to the point where I couldn’t stop reading :)! Wanted some more every time the chapter’s ends! I can really recommend it to anyone and everyone, nice one, thank you !
A really brilliant post apocalyptic series! Great selection of characters, brilliant ideas, a great mix of a dystopian, religious world gone mad mixed with a little fantasy or maybe sci fi! Which ever is is an amazing read!
I’ve reviewed all books separately, so won’t repeat it all here - look on the book pages if you want to see it! But this is a fantastic series, I really enjoyed reading it, and I love the author’s imagination. Well written and good characters, too!
This has been an amazing adventure. The characters are so well done I felt like I knew them. There is plenty of action, a great deal of hardship, and finally redemption. I truly loved this series.
Probably one of.the best series that I have been lucky enough to find. It kept me mesmerized from the first page to the very last. I hope that future readers find it as absorbing as I did.
This was an absolutely horrible book. Probably the worst I ever read. Shame on you for saying you're an author. Please don't waste your time on this abomination
Outstanding as always. Takes place after the end of the world. One lone survivor perhaps. Binge reading and impossible to stop until you get to the last book. Loved everything about it.
