J. B. Arnold is a thriller and horror writer who crafts his darkest tales under the bright California sun. He lives with his beautiful wife, their four children, and his most dedicated writing companion—Max, a gray tabby with impeccable taste in plot twists. When he's not exploring the shadows of the human psyche on the page, he can be found navigating the cheerful chaos of family life, proving that the best horror writers know how to balance the macabre with the mundane.
This was a tricky read- it kept getting my hopes up with some awesome situations, but never really brought the intensity/horror I was hoping for.
I also really struggled with the main character and his wife. His abuse and persistent anger towards them was mentally taxing to constantly read about.
It definitely has potential, but trimming it down and changing out the main character would improve this story in my opinion.
You know a book is good when the characters evoke strong emotions, and Exit 202 did just that. I really wanted to strangle Micah. Seriously.
In a last-ditch effort to save his marriage, Micah takes his family to Disneyland. But their trip home takes a terrifying turn when a flat tire leaves them stranded—without a spare. After waiting for hours, Micah sets off to find help and stumbles across a mountain man willing to assist. Sounds like a lucky break, right? Not exactly.
What starts as an inconvenience quickly turns into something far more sinister. As delay after delay piles up, and the family’s situation grows more dire, it becomes clear they’re not just fighting to get home… they’re fighting to survive.
Micah, for all his flaws (and trust me, so many flaws), becomes more complex as we learn about his past. Just when I’d start to feel sympathy for him, he’d lash out again and remind me why I was so mad in the first place. This book kept me on edge with every chapter, balancing slow-burn dread with pulse-pounding action. And the twists? More intense than a roller coaster drop.
If you love psychological thrillers that slowly tighten their grip before completely knocking the wind out of you, Exit 202 is a must-read.
Brad Bennett does it again! He brings the tension to life with his performance, making the unease feel all too real. His voice work adds an extra layer of suspense, pulling you deeper into the nightmare.
Five stars. Highly recommend. Just be prepared for some serious frustration with Micah. 😤
It's probably one of the best psychological thrillers I've ever read and easily at the top of my list for the best books I've read this year.

Updated review:
Holy shit that was intense!!
Exit 202 is probably one of the best psychological thrillers I've ever read and easily at the top of my list for the best books I've read this year.
This book truly surprised me, in the beginning I just knew it was only a matter of time before I started hearing banjos and then the story would transport me into some "Hills Have Eyes" type setting. But thankfully, Arnold is nowhere near as basic as I am because the story he actually delivers us is a lot deeper.
A family of four is returning home from a vacation away that they really couldn't afford. We have a dad with some serious anger issues, a mom barely keeping the peace, and two young boys being boys in the backseat. It's safe to say that tension is high from the jump. All they want is to make it home quickly and safely, but life is about to throw them a huge curveball. A flat tire in the middle of BFE and a chance encounter with a "good Samaritan" is about to flip their world on its head.
I can absolutely guarantee that this story WILL NOT go the way you think it will. And as much as I would love to ramble on and on about this story, I won't because I do not want to spoil it. This is a psychological thriller, but it is horrific in many ways, and it also digs deep into family dynamics and mental health. All in all, it's just a phenomenal book that is bound to leave your head spinning.
This tale certainly gave me mental whiplash, my anxiety was on edge, I was angered and annoyed by some of the characters, I questioned everyone's sanity ( including my own) and I even shed some tears. I can not recommend this book highly enough! This was my first book by Arnold, but it will not be my last, so please excuse me while I go grab his previous release, "The Streets of Floria."
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
So many twists and turns. The mania in Micah’s mind had me feeling for him. I was never sure what was going to happen next, even until the last page. Well done! I gotta go make sure my spare is in working order!
The year is 1987 and Micah, his wife, and two young sons are stranded on the side of the highway after getting a flat tire. With no spare tire or money, their return trip back home is postponed indefinitely, that is until a beat up truck pulls up to assist. Micah decides to head into a remote town with this mystery man, one he can barely trust based on his rugged, disheveled appearance. This man only brings bad news on top of more bad news, but what are his real intentions for helping Micah’s family? Will they be safe putting their lives in a random stranger’s hands? What does he want in return?
Exit 202 is a great thriller focusing on family dynamics and mental health, with a plot twist that will leave your head spinning. Just when I thought I had the book figured out, Arnold makes you question everything you just read. Not only did Micah’s character remind me of The Shining’s Jack Torrence but also my own personal family struggles growing up, making Micah’s uncontrolled anger hit harder. I constantly was questioning why Micah took everything Clyde, the “good” samaritan, said at face value but hey, I’m not Jack Torrence 2.0 on a family power trip with unchecked anger. All-in-all Exit 202 was a good read, some of the dialogue fell flat but I enjoyed the progression of Micah’s psyche, and how he handled his family’s worst case scenario.
Wow!!! What a crazy and wild ride! I was pulled in from the beginning until the very end! The excitement and intensity kept building and building. I felt this was very well written and couldn’t put it down! Lots of drama, horror, darkness and thrillers the entire book! A definite must read!
Exit 202 is light horror suspense story about a family of four who after many months of struggle are able to take nice little mini vacation. However, the drive home leaves them stranded on the side of the road with a flat tire in the California, semi secluded mountains.
It's 1987, there are no cell phones, Micah has only $11 in his pocket, has to leave his wife and two sons on the side of road in search of help. And help comes in a behemoth of a man with a crappy truck. Well, they get that spare tire but it turns out there's another problem with the car. As this strange man is "helping", Micah begins to question this man's motives and begins to make decisions to help protect his family. But are his decisions really helping?
With a closed third person perspective, the reader is allowed the opportunity to get close to each of the main characters thoughts and fears. It's intense and sometimes you're left asking who really is the bad guy here. You're also having moments where you're screaming at the characters "don't go that way! never go that way!"
The twist was decent and the concept was good, but there was a little something still missing. Haven't been really able to pin point exactly what.
I would like to express my gratitude to the author for the opportunity to read an arc of his upcoming novel and I wish him the best with its release.
I was lucky enough to be approached a while ago about reading this ARC, and I’m SO glad I was. I prefer to read my ARC’s closer to publication day, but this one has been calling my name for a while so I decided to go ahead and read it.
And let me tell you, this book is amazing.
J.B. Arnold does an amazing job at painting such a beautiful, terrifying, thrilling, tragic picture with this book. The writing was so flawless, and well done. It had a way of making me feel so engrossed in the book, I honestly would forget I was even reading. The prose was superb, and it all flowed so well.
This whole book had me feeling horrified/terrified, had so many twists & turns, I truly didn’t know what to expect from chapter to chapter. I would tell myself “just one more chapter” but it would never be just one. I had to know what was going to happen 👏🏻
On the way home from a family vacation, Micah's car breaks down with Lynn, his wife, and their two sons. Micah manages to flag down a good samaritan who offers to take the car back to his repair shop to get them back on the road.
What ensues is utter chaos as Micah and Lynn fight to keep their family together.
This page-turner is built upon layers of tension as the story unfolds. I love the use of the unreliable narrator which adds to the mystery and keeps you guessing until the very end.
This is the first book of J B Arnold that I have read and I have to say that his writing style is very gripping. I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next and to find out exactly what was going on. I will definitely be reading more from this author.
I will piggyback off the amount of detail this author can bring to the page from his first novel, The Streets of Floria. You truly feel like you are there along with the characters. Now the characters, the amount of being inside 2 of theirs heads made their thoughts become my thoughts! A complete immersed feeling like no other. The MC Micah has so much turmoil inside him from such a huge grief, perfectly depicted. As for the story, it brought an amazing sense of being hunted and the need to survive! You know how in movies you scream at the actors to do this or that to get away? In this you are getting such an in depth feeling of what makes thier minds tick with each move. As for the vibe I kept thinking of the movie "Identity" and "Momento", so psychological you with be be flipping pages faster than a propeller on full speed!
So if you are into such indepth characters and feeling like you are there with an amazing ending pick this one up!
Props to the artist for the cover, eye catching and and captures the sense of the novel perfectly.
3.5 stars. Exit 202 starts as Micah and his family experience a breakdown on the side of the highway. Micah has $12 to his name and it is 1987, so cell phones are not an option. Luckily, Micah finds a man willing to help them and get their car all fixed up, but is Carl actually helpful or does he have a sinister plan in mind? And can Micah keep his sanity intact in order to save his family? This was fast-paced and a fun, quick read that kept me guessing the whole time. The reader is never sure who is the bad guy, even until the very end, and it was a twisty ride. I was very fortunate to receive an ARC for this one, and am excited to keep reading anything that J.B. Arnold puts out there.
An amazing book! From the moment that I started reading this book I knew that I would not be able to put it down. Tense, emotionally charged and a great storyline.
Take the setting of “Wrong Turn” and the insanity of “The Shining”, and you have this book. If you are a Stephen King fan, and are looking for other writers similar to him, this is the book for you.
The environmental description is the book’s strongest quality. The author does a tremendous job in painting a picture in your head, making you feel the stuffy air or the dust hovering around you. The dream or hallucination sequences are particularly well done. When you know when to share and hide details to keep them guessing, that is smart writing.
The characters are simple but distinctive. Lynn is the classic supportive but cautious wife and mother, always trying to calm Micah down and keeping an eye on the kids. The two sons stand out in their own way: David, the eldest, is the smart one with little self-preservation, and twelve, so the snark is strong in that one; Will, on the other hand, is not as clever, but sweet, polite, and better at self-preservation.
There are times when it’s telling the emotions instead of showing them. One segment explains how the wife notices the husband’s anger and knows she must calm him down like in the past, then she does the action. It would’ve been more effective if it let the action speak for itself. J.B. does show this talent whenever the family is in the car, using loud kids, honking horns, and tightening hands to convey frustration, building anger, and, in some way, nostalgia.
I personally do not like the main character. His PTSD and love for his family makes him relatable, but his temper is trigger-happy, he blames everyone but himself when something happens, and is the quintessential idiot horror character. However, his constant switching personalities made me want to know what happens next.
In the “About the Author”, it says one of J.B. Arnold’s favorite writers is Stephen King, and it shows. ‘Exit 202’ will take you for a ride and make sure you don’t leave until the very end.
J.B. Arnold’s ‘Exit 202’ is basically a fast-paced thriller meant to mess with your mind! It has a gripping writing style, playing on ambiguity and some wild moments of unreliable narration. Although the final act wasn’t as impactful as I thought it’d be, it kept me on my toes from start to finish. It’s suspenseful, dark, and combines family and mental health issues in just the right way.
The year is 1987, and center-stage is Micah, a family man with anger problems; returning from a happy family trip, he and the family get a flat tire, find out they have no spare, and Micah has to go find help; then a giant of a man pulls over and offers to help him. What would you do?
Well, Micah accepts the help, especially since he’s promised a visit to a car repair shop and a quick fix of all his car problems. From that point on, the story becomes a huge question mark, as you can never be sure what anyone’s true intentions are and whose understanding should be taken at face value. Although the ambiguity becomes too much in places, and the pacing drags a bit in the middle, ‘Exit 202’ remains a thrill ride from start to finish. If you love thrillers, keep this one on your radar!
Micah, his wife Lynn, and their two sons were returning from a family vacation when their car breaks down on the highway. With no spare tire, they tried to flag down many people with no luck. After some time on the highway, a man pulls over to help and volunteers to bring Micah to his mechanic shop to grab a spare tire. Is it too good to be true? Is the mechanic really trying to help? Will the family get through this even with Micah’s mental health?
I really enjoyed all of the suspense in the story. One minute I would focus on one character but in the back of my mind I’m still curious about the other. This goes back and forth between mindsets of Micah and Lynn and I really enjoyed that aspect. I also like how the story brings you deeper into Micah’s mind and how his thoughts all will play out.
Arnold really had me questioning all parts of the story and I was taken aback at some parts. I really enjoyed the twists that, at first, I thought I had figured out, only to be wrong. The suspense had me thinking of the book even when I wasn’t reading it. There were many chapters that ended in cliffhangers so I, of course, had to keep reading on.
If you’re looking for a story that has suspense, thrill, and in depth character mindsets, this book is for you. I really enjoyed the detail that J.B. Arnold put into the characters to help break down what was really going on in their heads.
This is the first book I've read by J.B. Arnold and it won't be the last! I felt like I was right there while everything was happening. This poor family has gone through so much just to be left stranded with a total stranger. Does he have good intentions or not? While I was reading about one character I was constantly wondering what was going on with everyone else. This was an awesome book that kept me guessing and holding my breath at times. It definitely played with my anxiety.
Be sure to check it out when it releases on October 15th!
Another homeowner by J.B. Arnold. This book grabs you from the brining and doesn't let you go until it's haunting conclusion. How far would you go for your family? What would you do if you felt your mind slipping while being hunted by psychopaths? What is real and what isn't This was a heart pumping book that will leave you questioning what really happened.
Love the concept and that even with the title, I didn't know what to expect. I also couldn't stop reading because I kept wondering what in the world is wrong with these people!! And it just keeps going and going....your mind will be like...um what!? First by this author and I was lucky enough to snag a signed copy - definitely ready to read the rest!!
Exit 202 is the most suspenseful novel I've read this year. Is Micah's family in danger from the backwoods mechanic who's offering help? Or is the family in more danger from Micah who seems to be losing his patience with every set back. Arnold keeps the suspense and tension building until the final page.
Starts with a bang. Lots of twists and turns in this book. Couldn’t put it down. The dad seems a little crazy. I would definitely advise people to read it. Can’t wait to delve into another book by this writer.
Exit 202 is an anxiety fueled ride in the same manner as Texas Chainsaw Massacre. In this unsettling story, the reader is left to question everyone's sanity and who is the actual hunter and prey. This novel is brilliantly written. The story grips you quickly and then doesn't stop until the last sentence. The best part of this thriller is that one could imagine it happening in real life. I enjoyed how J. B. Arnold used prose to paint vivid imagery. This is an excellent choice to pick up this spooky season. Many thanks to the author for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Awesome book! I read it in one day as I couldn’t put it down as I was wanting to know the next chapter. Definitely highly recommend!! No spoilers in this review just straight up 5 stars !
This book is amazing and well written. The story never has a dull moment and never got boring. It is filled with a ton of edge of your seat moments. I was very entertained from start to finish. This is a must have if you love horror books. Don't wait go get it now. Thanks to the author who gifted me the book for a honest review. Very pleased with it.
From the beginning of this one, I felt like I was in on the action and stress, right along with the characters. I got to be in their thoughts and know their fears as they were on a race to try to save their lives. Creepy book! Lots of twists and turns!
