A vengeful thief escapes the clutches of dark immortals to bring an omen to the world of its impending destruction. Malidora claws her way out of the shadow realm beyond the boundaries of the universe, only to find herself stranded on the world of Kandom, where she uncovers the insidious presence of the Shadows. With newfound allies, Malidora sets out on a mission to stop the ruthless Gaith from harvesting the universe's energy to unlock a path to all realms and dimensions. As she battles not only the Shadows but also the darkness within herself, Malidora pledges to save this world and, ultimately, the entire universe.
I absolutely love Kevin Cox's worldbuilding skills. In each novel of this series, he creates worlds that are so very believable that I almost feel more like a space explorer than a reader. These worlds and the universe in which they are connected are truly interesting and they all feel so real. Like the main character, I felt like I was tumbling from one world into another and I couldn't help but want to explore every single one of them, get to understand their civilizations, and the wonderful creatures that roam them. It is as if the author started to weave a tapestry of richly detailed worlds in book one, and gradually, more and more of the final picture is revealed to the reader throughout the series.
Next to the worldbuilding, I also loved the characters and the strong dialogues. Neverscape is a mysterious, epic fantasy/sci-fi adventure that feels very multi-dimensional and that will grab your attention from the get-go.
This was another great read in this amazing fantasy/science-fi series! I loved Malidora’s character and how we get to know her better in this book after meeting her in the previous book! I loved the plot of this book it was fun and action packed with a lot of new information about the characters, series plot line, and the background into The Hollow! As always there is amazing world building in Kevin Cox’s books that help you picture what the worlds look like as if you were really there experiencing it first hand! All of the books feel cohesive between each other helping to keep the connected to each other while still each story maintains its on style and way of developing! Definitely recommend reading this one if you love high fantasy books, books with alien worlds, sci-fi novels, and stories filled with adventure!
I was hooked from the first word of this book - Malidora. I loved her character in book two so I was excited to learned Neverscape was about her. I love her strong character. So much action in this book. I enjoy Kevin Cox writing and can’t wait to read book four and five. I so recommend this series.
If there was ever a book that represents why I love science fiction and fantasy so much, it is Neverscape by Kevin Cox! Out of Cox’s three books, this one is definitely my favorite, which officially brings my “favorite books” total up to four!
The novel follows Malidora, an intriguing character we meet in book 2, Shadowsphere. After she had helped Tavarian defeat the blight whidge, she was overtaken by the Nuthereals and transported to another world. On this new world she must navigate power imbalances in an attempt to survive. Her adventures lead her to meet new friends, defeat formidable enemies, and rise to daunting challenges.
While it’s difficult to pick a favorite aspect of this wonderful book, I think Malidora’s character wins that title for me. She is unlike any character I’ve read before, without falling into the stereotype of “not being like other girls.” Her flaws make her relatable, and the fact that she is aware of those flaws makes her character that much more powerful. Throughout the story, we get to see her evolve and grow. But my favorite thing about her is that her personality stays intact despite that growth. Too often, character growth results in a drastic personality change that, quite frankly, doesn’t make sense. In sharp contrast, by the end of Neverscape, Malidora is still the feisty and headstrong character we all know and love, with the added bonus of having evolved into a more complex and vulnerable person.
Additionally, the theme of ignorance that is woven throughout the book is stellar. Not only did Cox intertwine this theme with Malidora’s experiences, he also included it in the cultures of the people in the novel. There are a few different groups of people in the book, and each is distinct and unique, adding a lot of depth to the universe. Having the theme of ignorance relate back, not only to the protagonist, but also to many other characters in the novel, made it very compelling.
Finally, I could go on about this book for days, but the last feature I will mention is the force of Cox’s writing. Something that sets aside the great authors from the good is their ability to write moving lines that stay with a reader. I was elated to find many such lines throughout this book, often interlaced with philosophical ideas (which, of course, made the philosopher in me very happy).
As a whole, Neverscape is such a work of art! If you’re a fan of science fiction and fantasy, and you haven’t already read Bewilderness and Shadowsphere, you’re going to want to pick up a copy of each as soon as possible so you can start Neverscape when it releases on May 16th!
Neverscape by indie author Kevin Cox is the third instalment in the Bewilderness series, a wonderful YA fantasy/sci-fi crossover. For those who’ve been around IIB for a while, you’ll have seen my reviews for the previous tales (Bewilderness & Shadowsphere) on my blog. So it’s not a surprise that this is going to be another glowing review, right?
Within this tale, we see how found families can be forged in fire. What’s more, Neverscape highlights how diverse & divisive groups can actually come together for a common cause. That part really seems like a fantasy compared to the real world, doesn’t it? But I love how Kevin hones in on each race’s unique qualities, & then gives them an opportunity to thrive against the growing darkness. We need more tales like this, featuring desperate hope & courageous heroines!
Last (but definitely not least) on my happiness boost list? The world building. It *has* to be the world building. How Kevin doesn’t get tripped up with all of these new worlds he has to create for the Bewilderness series, I’ll never know. But I’m so glad he keeps giving us more! The technology is unique, as are the political systems & cultural practices. Neverscape gives us yet another rich, immersive backdrop for us to fall in love with, even as the characters fight for freedom...
Review: Third book in the Bewilderness series takes you on a wild ride. I've said it before, the author is an imaginative writer and the descriptions are extremely detailed. This is not light reading, but if you like great world building, you'll love this series.
At the start of this one, we're firmly in The Hollow and it definitely had a different feel than the first two books.
I loved learning more about The Hollow and the end game as well as seeing more of fighting back against the Nulthereals. I was on the edge of my seat at a couple of the battles.
It's hard to give too much detail in a review without ruining some of the surprises, but I will say I loved to see some characters show up again in book three. I can't wait to see what book four has in store. Hoping for some more reunions!!
Another wonderful story from Kevin Cox as he explores a world of intrigue and fantasy. This time, we venture with Malidora whose fears of the Whidges (fantasy monster which represents all the bad stuff in the world) force her on an adventure as she warns other towns and fights the monsters. Cox has a great way of writing descriptions and pulling pieces from life to make you think differently, I particularly like the words, ‘She felt the weight of her taunting conscience, scratching against the shadowy recesses of her mind.’ I look forward to the next story in this series.
