Exiled Corporate Marshal Ziglar Ghostshade is haunted by the lingering ghost of his murdered husband, Gio. Unable to bring himself to keep the promise he made to spread Gio’s ashes on Ipanema beach, he passes his time committing identity theft and inhaling grief-donuts at Sweet Sally’s Bakery. Caught in the crossfire of debt and notoriety, Ziggy’s world spirals out of control when his possessions, including Gio’s ashes, are confiscated by District DipShip’s audacious new CEO, Alexia Ito.
Cornered by Alexia’s cunning manipulation, Ziggy is blackmailed into assembling a team of serial killers for the outlandish Super Serial competition, a corporate-sponsored sporting event that pits murderers against each other in a battle to the death. Armed with an eclectic ensemble including administrative marvel, Pepper Devoux, resident eccentric analyst, Floyd McNut, and the unforgettable forgettable security guard, Joe, Ziggy sets out on a dangerous mission to catch the killers before time runs out and he loses Gio forever.
Together, Ziggy and his motley crew must navigate a world of corporate intrigue, explosive encounters, and deadly investigations, where orchestrated deathmatches are the norm, and serial killers aren’t the only villains.
Set against the backdrop of a corporate dystopia run amok, Super Serial is a dark comedy thriller that reveals the power of friendship, the pursuit of justice, and the unrelenting spirit of resilience in the face of outrageous odds.

Nearly DNFed multiple time, was very difficult to get through. I think that the storyline and plot line are great, but the rigid writing style made me want to tear my hair out.
Feel free to run me over for writing a very late review! I received an ARC copy of the book and attempted several times to start it. The first two chapters were a little hard for me to get through, but chapter 3 was reached, and it was full throttle!! Many claim this book is "unhinged" but I found it endearing in a slightly deranged way. The characters are brilliantly written, the emotions are felt, and the story is a perfect reflection of the author duo....dad jokes, sarcasm, and a little insanity. Looking forward to the next one!
Set in a dystopian type future where “Countries” are no more and districts are run by huge corporations, Corporations run by CEOs who care little for the residents in their district. Ziggy Ghostshade is a Corporate Marshall who’s lost everything, and who’s love for depression pastries has caused him to go into incredible debt from buying expensive Glutoblockers to combat his celiacs disease.
When his debt is purchased by this district CEO, Ziggy has no choice but to track down dangerous serial killers to form the District’s Team for Super Serial - a to the death Hunger Games type competition.
I really enjoyed the story, and was kept on the edge of my seat. So many times I thought “how are they gonna come back from this?” and was delighted that I was kept guessing.
The side characters are great, but especially analyst Floyd McNutt. Great Autistic representation!
This book is chock full of song related baked-good puns and more amazing similes than you can shake a stick at. This book made me literally laugh out loud and one of my favourite lines was:
“The whole thing was a clusterf*ck that just kept getting f*ckier”
I was given an ARC of this book and was excited to read it given the comedic stylings of their TikTok account @harkermcnair. Looking forward to book 2!
I snagged an ARC of this book because, you know, I'm a huge fan of Mandy Harker from the hilarious Harker McNair duo on TikTok. And let me tell you, this book totally lived up to my expectations—no, scratch that—it surpassed them! "Super Serial" is a wickedly witty, surprisingly unpredictable, and absolutely hilarious read.
Now, here's the thing: I actually received this book on the very same day my beloved 10 year old German Shepherd passed away. It was an incredibly tough time, but diving into this story provided me with a much-needed escape. So, yeah, I might be a tad biased, but this book truly came to my rescue.
The Plot:
Picture a dystopian world where corporations have replaced countries, and disgraced corporate Marshall Ziggy Ghostshade finds himself in the middle of it all. With his days filled with devouring donuts and pining for his lost love, Gio, Ziggy is drowning in debt from buying glutoblock to battle his celiac disease. To make matters worse, he's likely to be sentenced to a lifetime of hard labor in a work camp if he get caught.
But when Ziggy's district CEO swoops in to purchase his debt, he's left with no choice but to heed her demands. Teaming up with a ragtag bunch of district employees, Ziggy embarks on an epic mission: hunting down and apprehending serial killers as part of his district's prestigious Super Serial Team.
The Good:
Let me tell you, I laughed my socks off while reading "Super Serial." There were so many moments when I couldn't contain my laughter. In fact, my husband and I had a full-on laughing fit when he caught me engrossed in the book and asked, "What are you reading?" We were both in stitches! Needless to say, we'll be getting a copy for him as soon as it hits the shelves.
Now, let's talk about the characters—they are simply incredible. I mean, seriously, I adore each and every one of them, including that enigmatic Joe...or was it Steve? Oh, wait, it's Dan! You'll understand the inside joke once you dive into the story. But trust me when I say that these characters are unforgettable… well, most of them, anyway.
And here's the thing: I've never come across anything quite like "Super Serial." It's outrageously unique and completely bonkers in the best possible way. I reveled in every single second of its wild ride.
The Bad:
Now, prepare yourself for this bombshell—I am absolutely, unequivocally furious that the next book in the series isn't out yet. Furious, I tell you! The anticipation is killing me, and I need more of Ziggy Ghostshade and his gang ASAP.
Overall:
"Super Serial" transported me into the captivating world of Ziggy Ghostshade and his loyal companions. While the book is an absolute riot, it tackles some pretty serious issues beneath the surface. And let me take a moment to applaud the authors for seamlessly blending humor and gravitas. It's not every day that you come across a thriller that offers such extreme comedic relief.
So, a heartfelt thank you goes out to Harker McNair for providing me with the perfect distraction. You've truly brightened my days with this delightful read!
I loved it. The humor is not for everyone, but it works for me. I loved the characters, Floyd is my favorite. I loved all the puns and dad jokes thrown around, it got me laughing from the start. I requested an ARC copy because I knew going in that I like the author’s wry humor, mixed with dad jokes and pastry puns that somehow work together. And it didn’t disappoint. I’m not a fan of scatological humor, but here it works. It’s not used gratuitously, but to show the despair of the situations our MC finds himself in. I really liked all the characters, even the serial killers, somehow I wanted them to actually succeed in Super Serial (even when that meant they killed other people). I found myself grinning most of the time, and earning you-are-weird glances from people when I laughed like a maniac. I really want to read the sequel.
Not going to lie there are some gruesome scenes. I loved them all! These authors really know how to suck you in and not let you go. I had to giggle throughout the book with the many one liners Ziggy has. I personally loved the way the characters were around Floyd.
I wish we could have known more about Ziggy and Gio, but I also believe that the story we were given was an adequate amount. I felt Ziggy’s love for Gio whenever he talked or thought about him.
I hope we can see more into the “Super Serial” game in the second book. I’m very interested in reading how the games work and the stories behind the killers.

Thank goodness for Floyd McNutt, one of the only redeeming things about this book.
Super Serial in my eyes was mediocre at best and I don't think it's as good as the author led me to believe it to be. I stumbled across this series via TikTok and saw how much light and joy was in the writers eyes when she talked about it and it sounded like a fun premise so I bought both this and the sequel from her Shop.
While a fun and semi-original concept (it's essentially a legalized riff on Squid Games) this was to me the book of "unnecessaries".
The chapters (and book overall) were unnecessarily long and seem a bit winded. There really is no need for it to take close to an hour for me to read a chapter, and I read pretty quickly. There was just way to much filler and needless rambling for me.
Over complicating your description of things every chance you had was a bit unnecessary as well. Instead of just saying "Ziggy looked pissed when he noticed..." it would be something along the lines of "Ziggy was madder than a jacked up rabbit tweaking on crystal meth hopping along chasing an unattainable carrot when he noticed..." for example.
Another minor thing that irked me is that the security guard that was with them when they would try to apprehend one of their serial killers would always die, but they would constantly refer to them by the wrong name. I get that they all essentially fit the same mold of a jacked up bouncer at a nightclub, but it just seemed like they were overdoing it every single time one would die, and they died a lot.
Making juvenile Middle Schooler jokes every single second you have the chance to, for me was the most unnecessary of them all. I get wanting to add humor and fun to your story, but sprinkle it in as needed. Every couple of paragraphs does not have to have a "dick joke" so to speak.
Am I nitpicking here with my thoughts and opinions? Sure, probably. But I don't know. There was just something off about this that just kept me questioning why I was still reading it. The fact that it took me just shy of two months to finish it when I can normally knock off a book in a matter of a couple of days should have been signs for me to DNF it, but Mama didn't raise no quitter. Except for that one time, but I digress.
To be honest, the Skidmore parts towards the end where they were searching for their Vigilante team member were great. If the rest of the book would have been written as well as those few chapters, then this review would be totally different. Unfortunately that and the last two chapters only made up less than 10% of the book.
Now with that being said, yes, I most likely will end up reading the sequel simply because I've already purchased it and I'd hate to just let my money go to waste (writing this as I look at a stack of unopened video games that I haven't touched in years). Also I did enjoy the ending and genuinely want to see what happens next.

I feel like a "bag of smashed assholes" for posting this arc review so late. I loved this book, so I took my time with it. I love that it's dark and satirical (and metaphorical af), but also ridiculous and silly. I smiled and grimaced in equal measure the whole way through. The rest of this will have spoilers, but I'm not tagging it because without context, none of it will mean anything. The Joe, Steve, Juan, etc. bit kills me. Rick and "My Tart Will Go On" Ugh. Just beautiful. Floyd might be my favorite character of all time. I loved his chemistry pun shirts and his adorable innocence. His relationship with Pepper, (Pepper in general <3) was so pure and supportive. I can't believe I freaking cried when Pepper and Floyd dogpiled on Ziggy. And Ziggy was the most lovable unlovable character. He was absolutely revolting, but I'd bring him donuts any day. I almost feel like this book makes more sense coming to it as a fan of Mandy's skits on tiktok, than Reclaiming did. I love both books, but the silly and kind of grossness just made this one feel more Harker McNair. lol. I can't wait for the sequel. I need to know how the DipShip Super Serial team does. I can't wait for Alexia's death. I know it will be glorious. (Okay that was a mini spoiler...) These authors are just so smart and fucking hilarious. I just want to be best friends so we can make fart jokes and laugh about ultrachads and dude writing and sexy winged fae every day.
Does anyone else remember a short-lived television series in 2017, Blood Drive? I could not stop thinking about it as I read Super Serial - they're not actually that alike, but the combination of spot on dystopian-capitalist-hellscape satire, a future with a much more bloodthirsty public, and the humour that occasionally dipped into the absurd - it all had me thinking that this is a book which could happily take place in that universe. And if you liked this book, watch that show.
But to the book itself, which was so much fun! Harker McNair brought the laughs even as she made me really regret that we never got to see Ziggy with a live Gio; the moments in his memory were genuinely touching, and it was a beautiful way to show why he was more than the indebted, in-denial, has-been he tried to turn himself into.
I loved watching the found family of Ziggy's new team come together - let's not count the killers themselves, but Ziggy, Pepper, Floyd, and the rotating security guards gelled really naturally and gradually over the course of the story turned into a group that really trusted each other.
I really enjoyed this - I'm trying to take a leap on more self-published authors, and this is a great reason why. Hopefully it'll also contribute to putting off this kind of future just a little longer for the real world - though the sequel to this can't get here too soon.
The characters really make this story special. Harker McNair has a real knack for great characters, even the characters with little page time are interesting. None of the characters felt flat and the main characters are layered and really pull you in.
The story is set in a dystopian landscape where the Corporations have all the power, so it's not a huge stretch to place yourself in this world or to imagine a way we end up there.
Each serial killer's methods are so creative and one even caught me completely off guard- but in the best kind of way.
The story is a page turner and keeps you guessing as to what happens next and how the story will go. The pages are full of little puns, subtle references, and as a person who never reads chapter titles, I read every one of these, and often laughed because they are so good. I loved looking for the little hidden gems.
Definitely recommend, if dark humor and dystopian is your style.
I got to read this book in advance of the release with an ARC and I loved it so much I will be purchasing a paper copy when it releases.
If you’re going to read this, know thyself. Check your triggers and possess the appropriate constitution and expectations. Most importantly, bring along your positive mental attitude!
Hidden within this grotesque, violent, ridiculous, and satirical world is a meaningful story with deep social commentary and human connection. This is a dystopian tale wrapped in satirical serial killer clothes. It’s not difficult to see the work the authors put into getting their message across with an excessive amount of flourish.
Okay, enough mushy stuff. This book is gross. It’s parody. It’s over-the-top and it does the most. It does all of this very well. From recurring jokes to over-the-top characterization the book stays true to it’s style while still managing to be more.
I would say everyone should read this book, but that’s just fundamentally untrue. A lot of people should not read this book. But if you are this book’s target audience, you won’t be disappointed by anything besides the fact that you have to wait for the sequel!
I'm not sure what I just read... but I didn't hate it. lol This book is a master class in world building. I could feel the grit and grime (and smell the stench) of the cities and even Ziggy, the main character. I have Crohn's and reading a (Celiac) character's inner thoughts about always looking for the bathroom when they walk into a new place, eating something that will set their stomach off but doing it anyway, the pain of an episode, and the embarrassment of having everyone in the next room hearing what's going on in the toilet is absolutely relatable. The story lagged in a few places and half the time I wasn't really sure what was going on, but it was an easy read and VERY entertaining. (I wouldn't want to be the security guard assigned to that lot... that's for sure) In the end, it's a story about sitting in your grief, finding your people, and battling your demons - sometimes with your actual hands. If you want to escape into a world where the main character is pretty pathetic and makes you feel like your life isn't so bad? This is the book for you.
This is like watching Benny Hill take over The Office in an episode of Criminal Minds. And I loved every squiigggy moment of it. The action packed, tear jerking, emotion-grabbing, heart of this book involves found family, relatable characters, dirty jokes and colorful language(thanks, Carol.) The plot gives way to some really tragic and terrible real life issues that should get more attention than they do. Honestly, it shows what it is to be human in the world. A gross, greedy, shady AF corporation. Living in a world where fighting in a commercialized death match is the better alternative is scary. One we let get this way. But there is hope. Set against the backdrop of a stark reality of rich vs poor, beauty and ugliness, fat or thin, you get the sense society idolizes the wrong groups. If you start cheering a serial killer on, you're not alone.
I was stoked to get an ARC copy of this book! As a lover of thrillers and dark humor, this book beckoned me. Sarcasm is a natural gift of mine and so many times I read the words in the pages of this book and said out loud “that’s exactly what I’d say!” This book was absolutely amazing. The dark humor mixed with the perfect amount of sarcasm with such a profound backstory. The character development was “chefs kiss.” By the end of the story I felt like Floyd was my best friend. As for Ziggy, I just wanted to give him a giant hug, not like the “demonic dookie hug” though.
Before reading this book, check the trigger warnings and prepare for a very graphic ride. I cannot wait to read book 2!
Round of applause Harker McNair, thank you for making all of my serial killer dreams come true.
I picked Super Serial up on a whim at half priced books, and it had my full attention right from the beginning! In a world of corrupt corporations, the Super Serial Games are like the hunger games, but with serial killers. We get to know the characters and the world they live in while racing the clock to build a team of serial killers fitting specific categories to enter in the Super Serial games. I can't wait to see what the actual games have in store for us in the next book! It is a must-read if you liked the hunger games and find true crime/serial killers interesting. I am honestly a bit surprised I haven't heard more about this series and am here to spread the word that it is worth the read!!!
If you took Repo! The Generic Opera and The Hunger Games and a rag tag discount version of the Breakfast Club and threw them all into a dystopian wasteland to battle to the death, you would still only come close to Super Serial. And I mean that in the best and sickest way!! Corporate greed leads people to resort to desperate measures just to survive and the corporations solution to crime? Murder games. Seriously I finished this book in a day because I just wanted to know if Ziggy was going to be successful and now I have to dive into the next book to see if Carol really did ‘serial delete’ her neighbors. DONT wait. Stop reading this review and please go read this book.

How to describe a book that doesn’t take itself seriously and yet is super serious. Oh yeah, unhinged and brilliant. From the first chapter, I was asking myself what in the world I was reading, and those moments never stopped. The unhinged metaphors both did and didn’t help. Even after I caught onto the satirical nature of the plot and it’s characters, the book still had me scratching my head at how anyone, let alone two people, could dive so deep into the bowels of of the mind and hold this story together. Like I said, unhinged and brilliant!
I am not a dystopian girlie but I did enjoy this one. The characters a quick and the plot is a bit different from anything I’ve read. It is a tiny bit slow in spots but Harker McNair wrote this in a way that really had me invested in all of the crew. The story a bit of a horror story but only in the way it is ominous of our own future as a capitalist society (Not to get political) but dystopian books sometimes feel like out future dark history. That is not how I like to read and relax but this one is told in a way that it really was enjoyable.
Imagine if The Hunger Games and The Office had a baby, and that baby was raised on grief donuts and corporate sarcasm. Now throw that baby into a televised deathmatch run by HR and give it a machete. That’s Super Serial.
Reading it felt like chugging an energy drink, getting slapped by a filing cabinet, and then somehow being promoted to CEO of chaos. It’s violent, hilarious, and deeply confusing in a way that makes you question capitalism, morality, and whether you should be laughing this hard.
Was a little hard to get into at first (stealing this from another) because of the rigid writing style. However the more I got into it the more I could not put it down. I felt very invested to find out if the team was able to complete the mission or fail, even with the writing style still very hysterical the whole way through and if you follow the author on TikTok, delivered on all of those promises about the book and more. Fun entertaining read with a variety of characters.
Such a fun story!! I loved all the characters and enjoyed the personalities of such a hodgepodge team! I purchased the physical copies of this two book series and the author signed both copies with dark humor jokes! So creative! Definitely looking forward to book #2. If you’re looking for a book that incorporates serial killers, a quirky serial killer search team, and great humor, this is your kind of story!
I’m the type of person that has to get sucked into the book to continue reading it. I could not put this book down. It’s hilarious but also not too over the top ridiculous. It has a solid story and keeps you wanting more. A lot of times when I read a comedy, they try to hard to be ridiculous but this book isn’t like that at all. 🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩 5 doughnuts out of 5.
Are you the kind of human that loves watching Snapped? This is the book for you! I could not put this book down! I usually only read romance but something just called out to me that I couldn’t resist. I’m glad I listened because my abs got quite the workout from laughing so hard! Absolute must read!!!!
This book did not disappoint.... I laughed (several times), I cared (even about the bad guys at times), I worried (Would anyone make it out a live?), I speculated (Is everything as it seems? hmmm....I wonder.) and thoroughly enjoyed this masterpiece of dark humor and combined thriller. Talk about creative writing...this is not a one tone book and I'm greatly looking forward to book 2!
After just a few chapters, I was hooked. The interactions between the characters were well written. I found myself wondering what could possibly come next, while also rooting for the team to succeed. The descriptions were so vivid that I either laughed out loud or was completely grossed out. I can't wait for the next book to release.
I read this book in three days and was sucked into the main characters quickly. Along those pages I felt so many emotions. A couple of times I ended up laughing at a situation that I probably shouldn't have. But the humor inserted into a book about serial killers cracked me up. I can't wait for book two to come out!
Super enjoyable with really great characters. Ziggy is a person you grow to love and this story is truly one of friendship. If you're looking for something dark yet hilarious, it's definitely worth the read!
I wish I could give this more than 5 stars. I have not had a book run me through like this in years. I was gasping one minute and laughing the next. There may have been a dryheave moment or two. Freaking wild ride. I'll be starting the next one as soon as I'm done processing.
