I was supposed to fear dragons, not fall for a dragon-shifter. I was stuck in a bad trade deal with the cursebringer when Alaric rescued me. But he wasn’t just a hard bodied shifter, his integrity won me over. He showed me how the cursebringer was draining the dragons of their magic. It turned out that I held the key to saving them in my necklace. Unlike the cursbringer, who wanted me only for my power. Alaric saw me for who I really am, the guardian of the dragons. Could a human and a dragon-shifter be together? My body ached for his touch, but our time together was short lived. The cursebringer found me. Alaric and I were at a crossroad. My life and the fate of the dragons were on the line. Being together seemed impossible. Not being together would destroy them all.

Cursed Flames is A Tale of Dragon Shifters, Ancient Magic & Forbidden Love by H.C. Hunter.
Sonya is set to marry Ronan, all in order for her mother to be healed. But what Ronan is really after isn't Sonya or to help heal her mother, it's really to get his hands on the pendant that she wears and the power that it contains.
Ronan feels as though Sonya is completely beneath him. He looks down on her with nothing but total disdain. But he has to marry her if he wants to have any chance of getting close enough to her to getting his hands on the pendant that she wears. He knows the power that it contains, how powerful it is and he wants it for himself.
The day that Sonya finally makes her escape Alaric is flying overhead in his dragon form. She's bound and fights with all her might to get free but Alaric takes her away. When they are finally far enough away that Alaric feels safe to stop, he changes from his dragon form to his human form.
Alaric informs Sonya that Ronan was just going to marry her in order to get the pendant from her and that he wants to stop her from marrying him. Alaric goes on to tell her that if Ronan gets his hands on that pendant than Alaric's people are going to be wiped out completely. He finally tells Sonya that the pendant she wears is actually the heart of a greater dragon. Sonya agrees to help his people if in return he can help her mother. With the deal made, they begin to look for a map to the mountain.
Ronan finds the first clue which leads him on to the next clue, and so they search for the mountain which the dragon is on.
Things start to get complicated when Ronan suddenly shows up. Realizing that Sonya isn't going to just get in line with his plans, Ronan threatens her mother to force her to get in line with what he wants and she is forced to leave Alaric in order to keep her mother safe.
Is Alaric going to be able to get Sonya, the woman he wants be? Will Sonya make the right decision?
H.C. Hunter developed dynamic characters who continued to grow and develop through the story and helped to keep me enthralled and it also brought the story and the conflict between both sides to life and made it feel all the more real.
Hunter did a great job in writing this story, keeping a stunning pace, the plot and subplot never felt bogged down and kept moving forward at all times. The action was truly intoxicating and that helped me to feel like I was playing a part in Sonya, her mother's, and the dragon's characters and what happened to them all.
Even though this is a short story, Hunter did an amazing job in writing this story as it is enthralling and one you feel truly invested in.
"I was supposed to fear dragons, not fall for a dragon-shifter."
Sonya is to marry a man who promised to get her mother healed. But what he wants is the pendant that she wears. There is power in it. Ronan is to marry a woman he feels is totally beneath him but he wants the pendant she wears. It is powerful. Alaric is flying overhead when Sonya makes an escape. She's captured and fights to get free. He takes her away. When they are far enough away he changes from dragon to man. He tells her Ronan just wants the pendant and tells her he wants to stop her marriage. If Ronan gets that pendant then his people will be wiped out. He tells her the pendant is the heart of a greater dragon. She will help if he can help her mother. So they start to look for a map to the mountain. He finds a clue which tells the next clue will found after the first. So the search for the mountain with dragon is on. Then Ronan shows up and once again threatens her mother to make her get in line with his wants. She leaves Alaric. Will Alaric be able to get the woman he wants back? Will Sonya make the wiser decision? A fascinating story.
I recognized this story, but wasn't sure until I got about 50% through. It was great to reread it though. The characters were dynamic and held my interest, bringing the story and conflict between "sides" to life." Sonya was in an untenable situation, simply trying to protect and help her mother. Believing both men could help her, but that only one would, she found her hands tied despite her desires. Alaric was a powerful Dragon Shifter who had been gradually loosing his power (or essence). Seeing how he and Sonya were able to so seamlessly work as a team was endearing. Unfortunately, there were those who were not in favor of such teamwork. Would our duo succees in their mission, or would nefarious opposition keep them from their goal? Find out?

Alaric is a dragon shifter and he meets Sonja who is the guardian of the dragons. Her mother is very ill so she makes a deal with Ronan, who to me is the epitome of evil. We find out just how evil he is. The pendant that Sonja wears is why she is the guardian of the dragons. It is an heirloom of her family’s for centuries. I believe it is the main reason that Ronan makes the deal with Sonja. How Ronan treats Sonja would’ve driven me crazy, but I would’ve put up with almost anything to save my mom too. She tries to run away and that is when she meets Alaric. Things go to heck really quickly after that and the book had me chewing on my nails with worry for her mom and for the danger they are in. Ronan scares the heck out of me. There are some shocking sections, funny sections and steamy ones too. I can’t wait to see what happens next in the series.

Which male is the real beast? The Dragon or the Lord?
Poor Sonya was stuck with the lord. Well, he did promise to heal her mother if she married him. If it wasn’t for that, she would have nothing to do with him. Of course, she knew the only thing he wanted her for was the stone around her neck. Finally, she had enough and decided to leave. Unfortunately, as she’s trying to escape, the guards caught her, but happily, she ended up being saved by a dragon. Not just any dragon, but a dragon shifter.
I really enjoyed this story. The plot didn’t bog down but kept moving right along. The action was exciting and I truly felt invested in Sonya’s and her mother’s and the dragons’ characters and what happened to them. Even though short, it kept me reading to find out the ending.
A fast-paced story, full of action, drama, intrigue, curses, betrayal, magic, twists and romance.
Sonya had agreed to marry in a deal to get help for her sick mother, though she knows he doesn't want her. She's rescued by a dragon who then shifts into a man, Alaric, and helps her to discover the truth behind the necklace from her mother, that she's always worn.
There's a curse on the dragons and Sonya might be the only one who can break it, but other's are still after her and the power she can bring them. Can Alaric keep her safe and can they find a way to follow their hearts?

Sonya was about to marry someone she couldn't stand, just to get help for her sick mother. This man only wanted the power she had in her necklace. She tried to escape but was caught. The she was rescued by a dragon, who she was supposed to be frightened of, who later turned into a man. She learned that she was the Dragon Guardian, who could undo the curse on the dragons. After the promise that her mother was taken to a safe place, she decided to go with the dragon shifter to end this curse. Of course, this wasn't straight forward - and the other guy didn't let go easily.
This is a short, quick read full of dragons and intrigue. Sonya has resigned herself to marrying Ronan to protect her mother but refuses to submit. When she sneaks out of his mansion she meets Alaric who helps her discover her true purpose and the meaning of the stone her family has vowed to protect.
I enjoyed the paranormal elements of dragon shifters and Sonya’s journey of discovery and awakening. The world building made it easy to envision their surroundings. I only wish the story was longer.

Sonya was caught in the middle of a power struggle between dragon shifters who were going extinct and a lord who would do anything for power. Being rescued by Alaric as she was escaping the clutches of evil starts this story off with a bang. It was an inevitable path bringing them together.

Really enjoyed this tale of dragons, humans, and a curse. Sonya is set to marry Ronan so that her mother can be saved. I could not stand Ronan! He was egotistical, rude and just am overall jerk. Sonya is a caring loving daughter who will do anything to keep her mother safe, including marrying Ronan. Alaric is a drawn to Sonya by her necklace. They both end up with feelings for each other BUT can a human and a dragon be together?

H. C. Hunter has written a great book. The heroine is strong and (mostly) able to rescue herself. The hero is a hottie who’s got jokes…
This was a bit of an action/adventure romance - what romantasy doesn’t have some kind of quest!? The humour is tongue-in-cheek, and had me giggling with the sly little statements.
A super quick, sweet escape, and highly enjoyable!.

I devoured this book in under an hour. Oh, my lord the drama and the need to do anything for her mother. The pull and sensations between the dragon shifter and our FMC! And the twist of what the necklace actually was mind blowing. Loved the chemistry between these two!
"I was supposed to fear dragons, not fall for a dragon-shifter." A good start to the series I couldn't put this book down until the end! The plot is unique and full of adventure and romance. I really enjoyed this short story as I felt that the characters were engaging, the storyline was well written, and I love the ending. Sonya is going to marry a man she doesn't love just to save her mother life. That man only wants from her the stone she carries in her necklace. A gift from Sonya mother. A stone who holds a power that in the wrong hands can destroy all. She needs to escape far from him, but how? This short story is definitely something I could see being a full-blown book!
