Kurtis Wiebe is a Vancouver, Canada based author. The founder and CEO of Vast Vision Publishing, he comes from a two decades long career in comics and games. He is the co-creator of over ten original comic series and a content creator spanning podcasts, live streams and other digital media. His stories have garnered multiple industry awards including two coveted Shuster’s for best writer.
To conclude the Rat Queens series the original writer and artist reunite for an 80-page special. The story is split between the last bawdy and bloody adventure that created a rift in the women's group, causing them to go their separate ways, and a slow and sentimental attempt at rapprochement decades later.
It's not great, but it's the first decent book in the series since the fourth volume. It mostly makes me sad about what could have been if the artist hadn't assaulted his wife a decade ago just as the series was taking off.
a bittersweet ending to a favorite series of mine. Rat Queens has been amazing, scattered and unfocused, funny as all hell, but always about sisters, and always worth my time. I'm sad it's over but glad it got an ending it deserved.
(3,9 of 5 for a surprisingly decent ending) Wiebe came back to finish this tormented series. And he did that even with some little grace. And that was nice and the final closure is relieving. This story follows back and forth two timelines - reunion after forty years and their last time together. And it works well, different art is a nice touch and I love those epilogues with "how they all get on with their lives". But the "last goodbye" storyline feels a bit weird because Weibe probably forgot to read what Ferrier did with Rat Queens in the meantime and how the 8th volume ended. Especially with Hannah, he follows more state of mind of the group and character from the point when he left the series and that felt odd. But except that, it's gods' favour we got this ending/closure.
While I can’t wholeheartedly recommend the series due to all the ups and downs, this special finale is quite good and provides much-needed closure for the wild ride that was the Rat Queens.
Nice to see our Rat Queens one last time. While this won't rank as one of the best RQ stories, it does have the feel of the original joyous books. (And Upchurch knows how to draw Betty, a big improvement over the last outing!) A fitting end for the series.
I stumbled across this today while randomly on Amazon and reading it was the end I had to get it. I love the Rat Queens and have done since the first volume. This was a great way to end the story of the Queens and it was done so well. While I am sad their tale is over I am delighted to have had the chance to read it and have a good ending. To the Rat Queens!
A kind of series finale one-shot, this issue is an interesting entry in the RQ line. The story sees the return of the original creators of the series, Wiebe and Upchurch, and you can see the difference right away from the volume that preceded it.
We are put into a dual-narrative as the story starts years in the future as old-lady Violet is headed to Pallisade to meet her old friends at Braga's house there - a lot has clearly changed as we go along. Side by side we are also following what is a bit of the "last ride of the Rat Queens" as Violet in the present/past is pulled out of her domestic retirement to help her estranged brother. She seeks the help of her friends and while relations are strained (particularly with Hannah, a recurring theme since her departure from the group), the group sets out. They find him with a different Dwarven clan and there are hidden things happening while the Queens try and also deal with their own issues - and things find ways to escalate as they often tend to until there is violence to be had and interpersonal tensions to flare.
The parallel stories are interesting and the use of visually distinct art styles works quite well. The past looks like a classic RQ story and the future has an almost serene painted vibe to each panel and tonally it definitely works. So kudos to the artwork for elevating the issue.
The story itself is a mixed bag for me - it is definitely better than the previous arcs in the last volume, but while the first half to 2/3rd of the issue is actually pretty solid and has clearly a better understanding of the characters than the previous dozen or so issues, the ending kind of felt a little like a step down from the build. Nothing bad, just, again, rushed. Conflicts and character interactions and the moments could have benefitted perhaps from even a few more pages to play it all out but it all felt hasty, including the kind of wrap-up for the future Queens explaining the gap from then til now - it was like a TV show that got cancelled partway through a season so the makers decided to alter the final episode(s) to do a kind of tie-it-all-together closure.
It was nice and feel good and I'm sure a bit cathartic for the two embattled creators behind it. No doubt that they both proved here that they are well suited to this world and these characters and given a different circumstance and choices on their parts years ago, they might have been a legendary team that redefined this kind of adventure comic with female leads in a far more positive light.
If you're a fan of the franchise, yeah, this is a solid send-off that works and you can even read if you want to without reading the preceding ones - it plays off just fine as a standalone.
I am furious that Upchurch was allowed to return to the series, but this is nonetheless a well written, thoughtful end for the queens.
Spoilers!!!
I am a little pissed that all of the queens who ended up with a partner had kids. It's kind of a cop out for all women to pretty much end up a mom and take care of the home.

I think this was the only way the series could end. Did we get everything we wanted? No, not at all. But did we get to see our Queens in action again for one last time? We sure as hell did. And I loved every moment of that.
Briljant slot van een fraai epos. Hoe het onze heldinnen is vergaan, xx jaar later. Helaas onvindbaar als 'print'. Ik heb het met een e-boek moeten doen. Een e-boek!
