"She still believed I saved her, without knowing I was repaying her for rescuing me." Addison How could someone possibly love all of my broken pieces? For so long I asked this question, until I met James. Marrying a psychologist was never in my plans, not that I had any. Surviving the first seventeen years of my life was my only goal. Now, through the use of dream interpretation, and his own devised methods, my husband was mending my broken pieces.
James The calm to her chaos. Addison never knew the darkness that plagued me before meeting her. Now, my soul craved every piece of who she was. I could never repay her for pulling me from the shadows, but between the four walls of a hidden room, I'd show her my gratitude until our dying breath. The only issue? I wanted so badly to heal her of her past, I didn't consider the monster that would haunt her present.
*Seventeen Minutes is a fictional story of one woman watching her best friend live through horrible circumstances that bring to light triggers from her past. Through the use of dream interpretation and shadow encounters, Addison works on her own healing while attempting to be a support for Tatum. Interconnected with The Echoist in the Narcissus and Echo series, this novella also includes tropes such as opposites attract, soulmates, hidden truths and open-door romance scenes intended for mature adult audiences.

Many thanks to Eliza Anne for this digital ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
———my thoughts———
There is no author who can write emotions like Eliza Anne. You don’t just read them...you feel them too. Her writing has this beautifully haunting lyrical quality, and it’s the reason I end up sobbing my heart out with each book of hers I read. Seventeen Minutes is particularly special to me, because it’s about my favourite character from The Echoist—Addie. Told through Addie, and her husband James’ POVs, Seventeen Minutes is the perfect companion to The Echoist. Addie and James’s healing relationship, in comparison to Bryce and Tatum’s abusive one. It’s the other half of the story. And while it is about healing, it does contain many vivid flashback scenes of abuse—so please, please read the trigger warnings. While this novella truly is about Addie, James plays such a large part—not only as her husband, but as her therapist and dream interpreter. Dream interpretation isn’t something I’ve heard of extensively, so it fascinated me when it appeared in The Echoist, and in more detail here. But I’m getting off topic. Anyway, James is perfect. Caring and compassionate, he’s the soft to wear down Addie’s hard edges. They’re the perfect couple, and it’s beautiful to see how much they care for each other. They’re truly soulmates. And this book must be two-thirds of the size of The Echoist, but it still managed to leave an even bigger hole in my heart than the first book. I remember exactly when I finished it (2am in the morning) just crying. I can’t tell if I cried more here, or with The Echoist...but what I do know is that however much I love Tatum, Addie will always be my favourite.
————quotes————
“Don’t you want to grow old and gray together?”
“Knowing she was fighting her mental demons alone made me want to jump from this bed and rush to my office. But the rational part of my brain kept me firmly rooted in place. I didn’t want to keep her from entering the dream into her journal while it was still fresh in her mind.”
“I love you for you. Not for any potential future we may or may not have.”
“I will take care of your body as soon as I take care of your mind, Addison,”
“Talk to me, Addie,”
“I would find you in every single lifetime.”
“No matter how much he gave me, it would never be enough.”
I just finished this little beauty, so I’m still in my feels.
I should disclose that I have not read The Echoist yet, as I’ve heard it’s a bit of a emotional rollercoaster and I like to “conceal don’t feel” mine. This is absolutely a standalone, and while it coincides with The Echoist, reading it alone will not confuse or make you feel lost in anyway.
This is a perfect sized novella, it wasn’t so short that I was upset that it was too fast pace. The book revolves mostly around James and Addie. The struggles that come with past trauma and the work necessary to put into the healing and their marriage.
We get incite into Addie’s trauma mostly from her dream log, but we also see anxiety and panic attacks (or the starting of). These instances were all depicted perfectly, in a way I would definitely not have been able to word.
I love their love for each other, in the public and behind closed doors.. Yes, folks open door novella right here! Check the CW, and possibly keep a tissue near by? Though it didn’t make me cry, I could see it being a possibility. This book will take you through many emotions, and possibly take you on a thought journey afterwards.
Thank you Eliza for trusting me to read this. Your words soothed me while delivering sadness, as I said before you have a way with words and I’m absolutely there to read more of your work. Even a blurb. 😉
1.5 ⭐ I can't quite place why this was a miss for me. I found myself not connecting/caring about the characters, the last 30 pages would probably be gripping and emotional for most but just didn't hit for me. At times, I found the dialogue to be cringy, even skimmed over some on occasion. However, it was decent and written well enough, just not for me!
I was given this book as a ARC read in return for my honest review, so here it goes This had me ugly crying & we still hate Bryce, I love how it picked up right from the Echoist, and went into more details about what went on through the whole book & more into James’s aspect of his dream interpretation I thought it was super interesting 🤔 The ending had me on a full choke hold and feeling some type of way! We all need a James in our life’s he’s my favorite character along with Addison!! Together there perfect😘❤️ I absolutely loved reading this novella 📚 🫶🏻 Y’all have to read this when it releases💯 I can not wait to read what Eliza writes next this lady knows how to put words on paper😍 Favorite quote “I would find you in every lifetime and choose you” 4/5 Overall ⭐️ 4/5🥵Spice level 5/5 Story
This book, this book is one of the biggest emotional rollercoasters I’ve ever been on. The story centers around a married couple, James and Addie. Addie has a traumatic past but with James’ love and support, she is doing much better. It’s honestly hard to write a review without giving away this story but know that this author is going to weave you into their lives, make your heart break (yes, I cried ugly tears) but eventually put you back together, well mostly. One of the things I loved about this book was the fact that the HEA isn’t perfect and this couple carry the scars with them into the future from their story as it was told.
If you are looking for a book to bring out your emotions, and be prepared to cry, then one click it now! These characters are very well developed, the story goes along at a great pace, the steamy scenes are hot and the emotional ride is huge! Well done Eliza Anne! I can’t wait to read more of your books!!!
Oh my goodness. This is a novella, so shorter than the novel with the parallel POVs, The Echoist. But wow. I thought I was prepared and it turns out, not so much. I can't wait for the next full length novel in the duet.
This was nothing I was expecting out of this book. This is a very emotional and traumatizing book. It will break your heart in so many ways. If you need a good tear jerker, this is the book for you.
James and Addie are a married couple there very much in love He is a therapist who’s trying to help her through her childhood abuse This book is different to what I normally read but I’m happy I did it was well written and I was left feeling very emotional after reading it I would recommend this book
Seventeen Minutes will take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. It was written so beautifully, I felt like I was a part of the story when reading it. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I am so happy that I did read it. This book can absolutely be read as a standalone. While it does coincide with The Echoist, reading it alone will not confuse you or make you feel lost in any way.
The way Eliza captures all the emotional and physical trauma of Addie’s life is probably one of the best ways. I have anxiety and to see it explained so well in a book, it’s honestly refreshing because anxiety doesn't just go away, it has to be controlled.
You can feel the love Addie and James have for each other, in the way they look, touch and talk with each other. I loved the dynamic of James and Addie’s relationship, with him being the calm to her storm. We all deserve a James, who stands up for Addie against his interfering family, who holds space for her during the times she deals with her past trauma and who absolutely adores her no matter what she is going through.
The characters are well written and I fell in love with them. As always, please check the TWs before starting this book. If you like tear jerkers then this is perfect for you!! Don’t forget, you may wanna have the tissues ready!!!
I had the pleasure to be an ARC reader again, for this amazing and talented Author. This, to me, if you haven’t read “The Echoist”, is the perfect introduction to James and Addie. If you have read “The Echoist”, it kind of just heals your soul. James and Addie’s love story is so well and beautifully written. It’s steamy, it’s open, it’s truthful, it’s kind, it’s caring. Their relationship is what a healthy relationship looks like. James looks into dreams in depth. The way the dreams are interpreted, what lies within them is astonishing. This novella really was the perfect addition to “The Echoist”. This novella shows heartbreak, care, overcoming many obstacles. You can read this novella as a standalone, or even right after you finish “The Echoist”. Do read the TWs at the very beginning of the novella, just in case! This is still a roller coaster of emotions, also THAT ENDING! The way I screamed, cried, kicked my feet the whole time while reading this! Eliza Anne, you have done it again!
My brain is still rocked by the last 10% of the book so this review might not be so great.
James and Addison are so beautiful together!!!
I love a man who is “my wife, my wife, my wife” and James is 100% Team Addison all the way! His belief that they’re soulmates is so true. They were made for each other!
This book is SPICY!!! I read everywhere and around anyone and it normally doesn’t bother me but a few times I had to stop reading because I was with my mom and daughter or because my daughter was with me. It was HOT!!!
Aside from the spicy feelings, this book also gave me soooo many other feelings!!! Rage, sadness, protectiveness, and more. I cried, I got the gut wrenching feelings when I read “seventeen minutes” and I just knew that’s where the title came from and I knew what would happen next wouldn’t be good.
The last like 10% of this book fucking rocked my world. I am NOT okay! I can’t stop crying. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS IN SEVEN YEARS!!! I NEED TO KNOW THAT EVERYONE IS THRIVING AND LIVING THEIR BEST LIVES! Except Bryce! FUCK BRYCE WITH A RUSTY AND BROKEN KNIFE WITH NO LUBE!!!
This is a quick read that packs a punch. This book is about therapy and dealing with trauma. James Foster is a licensed psychologist. More particular he interprets dreams to find the true meaning behind them. His wife, Addison, has a very troubled background and is plagued with nightmares. After each nightmare, she is encouraged to write it down so that James can analyze it later. As a couple they are pretty good. It's the people around them that suck.
Pressure from family members to have children constantly. On top of that, James' cousin and his wife seems to be dabbling in domestic abuse. Can Addison handle all of this on top of everything else going on in her life? This book shows how quick your life can change. In 17 minutes, this family’s life was forever changed. Readers will think this book is just about therapy and healing childhood trauma but it goes much deeper. Readers will feel everything that Addie goes through past and present. This book will definitely make readers think.
Addison fears that no one could possibly love all her broken pieces, all the years of abuse and trauma her step mother dealt her, all her nightmares, all the triggers she just can't overcome. But James does. He understand her, he loves every bit of her, he has also healed her - not fully, but theirs progress and that says alot.
James is the calm to Addison's storm. While Addison is the outgoing, overly friendly extrovert, James is the logical introvert - a psychologist who finds pleasure in rereading his favorite Carl Jung book. They compliment each other in every way and James cannot fathom a life without Addison by his side.
But when Tatum calls Addison for help after James' cousin, and her husband, beat her and left, Addison's trauma surfaces once again, and even though James has confidence that his wife will heal, he never could have imagined that the thing that could separate them would be the cousin who was like a brother to him for most of his life.
My thoughts: I cried and cried and cried. After reading The Echoist, I knew stepping into James and Addison's novella was going to hurt me, and it did... so, so much. But it also healed me. At the end of The Echoist we were left with a big shock and with that in mind, I found myself sobbing to every scene, sweet or sad. This book is so beautiful, James is so beautiful and their relationship is SO INCREDIBLY beautiful. She is the Yin to his Yang, light and dark and it really is just an amazing experience to witness their bond. The plot was so good and I THANK YOU @elizaanneauthor for that ending, because if you hadnt surprised me with that, I'm pretty sure id still be sobbing to this day! A truly incredible read😭🖤
Wow. Holy crap. Great book. I’m glad I read the echoist first or I would have been super lost. I love James and Addison. Addison over came a lot with the help of James and Tatum. Though she still experienced other trauma from her in laws she persevered through all of that. I hope there is a continuation of their story along with Tatum’s. I’m at a loss for words about what happened to Addison in this book. It did not end the way I thought it was going to based on the ending from the first book. For that I am so grateful still sad but grateful.
Definitely wish I read this before the Echoist! Addie and James’ relationship is what everyone wants in a healthy freeing relationship. The steam, the openness as well as going through the obstacles with one another. What a read!
I received this ARC for an honest review, all opinions/thoughts above are completely my own!
I swear I went through so many emotions reading this book. Anger, sadness, anger, so much anger. This book is so good, all of the characters have their own issues and they were written so well. Eliza really hit it out of the park with this book. I can't even express how much I loved these people's stories.
James, a psychologist, has spent years trying to help his wife, Addison, overcome her demons and is getting closer to that goal by helping to interpret her dreams. As the story progresses family brings drama, there seems to be hidden trauma, and their relationship may be derailed when she has words with his mama. Seventeen Minutes is a heartbreaking read about a couple trying their best to overcome the troubles of their past and present.
I received a free copy of the book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.
Read this in less than two days. Had to force myself to put it down to do my weekend cleaning. Eliza Anne did it again, made me laugh, made me bawl my eyes out. The perfect novella. Can't wait for more!!!!
All I can say is I can't wait to see what happens to Bryce in 7 years. James and Addison are #couple goals. This book will take you on a journey of dream discovery and you will enjoy the ride.
I appreciate the opportunity to be an ARC reader for Seventeen Minutes! This was the perfect complement to The Echoist, and I loved that James and Addie’s story was told separately from Bryce and Tatum’s (they definitely deserved their own journey). This book was the perfect blend of sweet and spice, and felt like catching up with old friends. I was not expecting the twist at the end. Eliza Anne is such a talent and I can’t wait to see what lies ahead!
I highly recommend reading The Echoist before reading Seventeen Minutes. The books provide different perspectives of events which occur over a similar timeframe. While Seventeen Minutes could be read first, I think readers will appreciate it more after having read The Echoist.
Seventeen Minutes is a contemporary romance novella featuring James and Addison, a married couple in a loving, understanding, and supportive relationship.
Addison, aka Addie, suffered years of childhood trauma that she carries with her. Her husband, James, is a beautiful soul who adores his wife and soulmate. He is also a trained therapist and an expert in dream interpretation. As part of the steps Addie needs to take to heal, he has her write out her dreams allowing him to assist in helping her conscious mind understand what her subconscious needs her to hear. He is both gentle yet firm with her, doing everything he can to help her on her healing journey. His love and respect for his wife comes through in his actions and his words.
James grew up with his cousin Bryce, and considers him a brother. Their wives, Tatum and Addison, are best friends.
While Addie's trauma and healing are a large part of the content within this book, there is more. If you've read The Echoist then you know that it delves into the topic of domestic abuse from within the relationship. Seventeen Minutes looks at it from outside the relationship. It not only speaks to how Addison and James react to discovering the abuse, but also how it affects their own relationship.
Like The Echoist, Seventeen Minutes was a heart wrenching read. My heart ached revisiting Bryce's abuse of Tatum, but also Addie's pain and trauma. I finished reading it around midnight, and had to sit with all my emotions.
I loved it. Eliza Anne has officially found a place on my list of "I will read anything you write" authors. She is a very talented storyteller who writes about challenging topics with grace.
I highly recommend picking up a copy, but I ask that you please protect your mental health an be sure to read the triggers beforehand.
Wow, holy sh*t Wow, Eliza Anne did not disappoint with this novella, this had me bawling my eyes out what a fantastic read.
"Don’t you want to grow old and gray together?”
James is just perfect, with a capital P, he is the calm to Addison's storm, He's Caring and compassionate, sexy as sin, he's a logical introvert ,a psychologist who finds pleasure in rereading his favorite Carl Jung book 😊 while Addison is over friendly extrovert, she's beautiful, kind and caring, they are the perfect couple, they truly compliment each other perfectly and it’s beautiful to see how much they care for each other. They’re truly are soulmates. James cannot fathom a life without Addison by his side at all.
“I will take care of your body as soon as I take care of your mind, Addison,”
James... The spice whew, that man.🥵 The way he lead in the bedroom while respecting her space and healing process was perfect. How he knew what she wanted and needed and when she needed it warmed my heart. All the through I smiled, gasped, cried. I loved every moment of this book.
“Knowing she was fighting her mental demons alone made me want to jump from this bed and rush to my office. But the rational part of my brain kept me firmly rooted in place. I didn’t want to keep her from entering the dream into her journal while it was still fresh in her mind.”
I highly recommend reading both books, and grabbing your tissues cause you will need them , can't wait to see what else she writes 😊🖤💜
"I would find you in every single lifetime.”
“I love you for you. Not for any potential future we may or may not have.”
This novella was the perfect way to encapsulate the story of James and Addie.
You meet the two of them in The Echoist, but this story encloses them. Their story will rip your heart apart, but mend you back together.
James is the definition of perfection. He way he is able to calm Addie down during a panic attack, the way he absolutely adores her, his dirty mouth during intimate moments, and more. James adores his wife and doesn't let the influence of anyone else step in to change his mind, especially his mother's.
Addie has lived a very troubling path that has caused a lot of anxiety well into her adult life. If it weren't for James, she wouldn't be where she's at today. He has helped her heal in so many ways. This woman has a heart of gold and cares deeply for those around her.
Even though Addie has grown and healed tremendously, she is thrown backwards when Tatum calls her crying. Addie, being Addie, instantly rushes to be with her...but a turn of events unfolds and you're left with your jaw on the floor...
I will NOT spoil any of this because you must read to know what all of this is about!!!
🔥 Be sure to check the triggers before diving in!
Thank you again, @elizaanneauthor for allowing me to be a part of your team. You really knocked this one out of the park! Not that I had any doubt whatsoever since The Echoist was incredible! Can't wait to read more from you!
Part 2 of the Narcissus and Echo series ARC Review
Note: This book can be read in tandem with The Echoist starting in chapter 6 of The Echoist.
This book is the reason of I love discovering new authors! I signed up for an ARC of this because I saw the Soulmate trope. This book was incredible. We get to see James and Addison’s marriage, and their love and devotion to each other.
James is a new book husband to me. This man, his devotion to his wife, her healing journey. Top notch. And when you find out what goes on in that room? Get ready. Spicy and sensual. He uses exposure therapy to help her heal her past traumas related to abuse, all the while doing it in a loving, worshipping way.
James was always mindful of her feelings, her moods, and he could read her like a book because he knew her that well. He picked up on all her emotions and knew just what she needed at any given time.
Addison is a hyper empath and really cares about the people around her. She takes on their feelings and burdens, and tries her best to help them. I loved that about her.
This book is also emotional, especially at the end, but I loved it! I read it in one sitting; I just couldn’t put it down! I already need a comfort reread of this book.
I am so excited to read this book because Eliza Anne’s first book in this duet (The Echoist) had me so intrigued about the relationship between Addie and James. And y’all, by the end of this book I was wrecked in the best way possible. This was a perfect duet to The Echoist! Exploring the depth of Addie and James relationship was a beautiful experience full of healing, love, and genuine connection. I blazed through this book and couldn’t put it down. I appreciated that this whole story felt real. It wasn’t a fairytale. There are major consequences for impactful actions that will haunt your mind. It emulates real life situations that need to be addressed, talked about and dealt with. Let me tell y’all a bit about the story.
Addie is our FMC who has a troubled past. A childhood riddled with abuse and trauma keeps her from truly living until she met and fell in love with James. James works in psychology and does dream interpretations, studying Carl Jung and applying his philosophies in his research. James has helped Addie find herself again, but there’s always a shadow lurking inside Addie’s mind. It doesn’t help that her best friend is going through some major shit (hint hint, read The Echoist!) and Addie is determined to help her.
Hurry and add this to your TBR, but be sure to read the first book in the duet titled The Echoist. You’ll really get a different experience if you do (:
Swooning while crying is a whole new experience. 🥹
Seriously guys. I knew this book was going to have me shedding a few tears. What I didn’t expect, was to ugly cry like a big old baby.😫😭 between Addie’s journey and the James unconditional love for her threw it seriously had me up all night devouring this book in one sitting. I almost didn’t finish it when I got to the last few chapters because the ending of the echoist. I couldn’t handle life if that insinuated ending actually happened. (I won’t say more due to spoilers) just know I’m SO GLAD I DID! I loved James from his first appearance in The Echoist, I devoured every line he had in that book. I knew for certain his book was going to make me fall even more in love With him and his patient heart. BUT OH MY GENTAL GIANT. 😭🥹 he is the definition of perfect man. From the subtle things he did for Addie (the wine glass on the counter for sound) to the bigger things (the whole damn room). His silent reassuring, never ending love for her was absolutely swoon worthy. James is 1000%, hands down, top of the line perfection of book husbands.
10/10 I sooooo recommend. Eliza knew exactly what she was doing when she wrote both of these books. 5/5 stars.
Eliza Anne has such a beautiful writing style, she knows how to grab your heart and invest it into her stories. 17 minutes was among one of my top reads for the year!
James is a psychiatrist who specializes in interpreting dreams to help his patients heal. While building their house James has enlisted his cousin Bryce to help in building a secret room off his office just for his healing techniques for his wife, this therapy helps build new meanings and memories to words or actions that have caused so much pain in the past. While helping his wife deal with the trauma of her childhood he uncovers her fears of being a mother. While the internal debate Addison has on this topic, it is for her and husband to decide if and when they are ready to start a family. Regardless her in-laws are putting their opinions in where it only causes more turmoil.
Once Addison confides in James to interpret her sister in-laws dreams the repercussion it has, only crushes both families and leaves me weeping and heartbroken for James and Addison. Make this your next read to find out why only seventeen minutes has changed their entire world!
Full disclosure, I haven't read The Echoist, so I went into Seventeen Minutes blind.
I was intrigued from the beginning about how James was helping Addison overcome her trauma in such unique ways. I'd read books before where the heroic man is determined to cover up her trauma with his own actions, but I guess I never really considered that to be a true coping strategy until I saw how James described it.
I honestly kept thinking that James was going to end up being an ass, pushing her past her limits. But he could not have been a better husband to her. He knew the right things to say at the right moments, he knew what she needed exactly when she needed it, he devoted so much of himself to her.
The ending came out of nowhere and had me on the edge of my seat. I loved the way Addison navigated through those last chapters, eventually breaking down her own wall.
Because of how the book ended, I'm hoping to read more about James and Addison in the future. Their story can't be over yet.
