Goodness but this is a sad novella. It is well written. For historical fiction it enlightens readers about the hardworking poor in 1940's rural Texas. You see the bad side of society in attitudes toward poor, disabled, half siblings. You also see character and grit; the folks have the guts to keep on keeping on even though their world has been rocked by change. Expect this novella to be thought-provoking but not joy inducing.

This lovely novella is the story of a cotton-farming family in north-central Texas during World War II. Narrated by seven-year-old Gate, the oldest child, the story centers on Gate's love-hate relationship with his volatile, and ultimately violent, father. It's a classic tragedy, although I didn't see the end coming as it did.
