A French Adventure

Rate this book
When your old life ceases to exist, it’s time to build a new one… It’s early summer on the French Riviera when Vivienne Wilson arrives for a one-woman writers’ retreat after her philandering husband informs her that their 30-year marriage is over.

There to collect the shell-shocked Vivienne is recently widowed Maxine Zonszain, who is struggling to come to terms with her empty life following the sudden death of her husband.

Florist extraordinaire, Olivia Murray, shares the Villa that Vivienne is renting. She’s pretty content with life - but longs to meet ‘The One’.

Life under the summer sun in Antibes becomes a challenging time for all three women. Secrets are shared, problems are halved as they forge new and unexpected friendships and embark on new adventures.

Sometimes life’s surprises turn out to be unwanted but just sometimes the ‘new normal’ makes for a happier life than the one lost.

Sixteen years ago Richard and I, with our then dog, 14 year old Holly in a trailer attached to Richard's bike, cycled down through western France via the canal paths, arriving in Antibes in July. With the exception of two fleeting visits back to the UK we have lived in France ever since.

For the past five years we have lived in a small cottage in central Brittany with one large collie dog called Viking, one fat cat known as Little’un and a young tortoiseshell cat called Missy. Oh, and there are various ducks and chickens in the garden, and a large pond with about a hundred fish in!

I have contributed short stories and serials to many of the UK women's magazines including, The People's Friend, Candis, My Weekly, Best, Yours and my stories have been published in Australia, Sweden, South Africa and Ireland.

I also write magazine features and my work has been published in national magazines and newspapers like, The Sunday Times, The Sunday Telegraph, Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph, Home and Country, Devon Life. For over three years I had my own newspaper column in the South Hams Group of Newspapers, that took a wry look at family life.

“It’s not always good to know the truth. Sometimes the past should be left in peace.”

Agree? Disagree?

Come see how three women in Antibes on the French Riviera each react to this statement.

I can always count on Jennifer Bohnet to pen a heartfelt story, spanning the generations and centering around women at crossroads in their lives. This one is no different!

Bohnet’s latest story features three women, at three different stages in life, who each face life-changing moments. Bohnet shows how painful endings can lead to new beginnings and the realization that the ‘new normal’ has exciting potential. Vivienne Wilson, Maxine Zonszian and Olivia Murray are no strangers to heartbreak and brokenness, but they learn to draw on the strength of community and navigate the difficult seasons of their lives to arrive at new beginnings. They pave a new future for themselves on their own terms.

Next time I’m in Antibes or Monaco, I’ll watch out for the pink London taxi, Daisy!

The characters ranged from charming (especially Leonie) to despicable (especially Jeremy), the setting was enchanting and vividly described, and the mystery of how the women were going to carve out their future was compelling.

Coping with unexpected challenges is something we all face. How we react to the challenge before us determines the outcome. We could learn something from these three women; sharing the truth to what brought them together was the glue that held them and fostered growth.

I was gifted this copy by Boldwood Books and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

Vivienne arrives at the French Rivieria not sure how she's feeling as her husband told her in the airport that their marriage was over. She meets Maxine who is struggling to come to terms with the death of her husband. Olivia shares the villa that Vivienne is renting, and she's longing to meet 'The One'.

This was a lovely cosy story of heartbreak, friendship and second chances. All 3 ladies going through their own turmoils, but supporting each other.

Vivienne is a successful author, on her way to the Riviera for some peace and quiet to complete her latest book – but as her husband leaves her at the airport, he also breaks the news that he’s found someone else and their marriage is over. Talk about picking your moment… and on arrival in Antibes, she’s understandably both shocked and heartbroken, with things only getting worse when she discovers the identity of his new partner and he begins to exert pressure over the sale of their family home.

But she finds friendship and support – recently widowed Maxine, who arranged her accommodation for her, and florist Olivia who lives in the apartment downstairs. As Vivienne finds the strength to stand up to her husband’s unreasonable demands and to think about the future, the book follows her emotional journey – but also picks up the lives and points of view of the two women who become her friends. The character development is really excellent, as they all deal with personal challenges, unexpected situations, and emotional choices. There’s a nice focus on family, but in different ways for each of them – and a few searches and discoveries that add a level of intrigue to the well-paced story.

The Riviera setting, as always, is quite wonderfully drawn – this really is armchair travel at its very best, as we experience all the excitement of the Grand Prix and the glamour of the film festival, but also visit the hillside villages and smaller communities where the lavender grows.

A story of fresh starts and second choices, beautifully written, with a strong cast of very real characters and the perfect ending – if you enjoy the same books that I do, you’ll find this one a total delight. Highly recommended for your summer reading list – a really lovely read.

This book opens with an absolute corker of a shock for Vivienne Wilson, one that starts a chain reaction in her life that even extends into the lives of a couple of women whom she has yet to meet. Vivienne had planned a trip to the French Riviera to immerse herself in the local area as she focused on finishing her novel. We learn that she is highly successful as an author but works under a pen name. We then meet recently widowed Maxine and florist Olivia, who together form the basis for this gorgeous escape to the sunshine.
I was immediately drawn to Vivienne as she is a similar age to me, and I could imagine her pain at discovering her husband’s secret. Thankfully, she is a strong and determined woman, and she is able to rise above her heartache and focus on her time on the Riviera. What she doesn’t anticipate is her metamorphosis as she finds the courage to make changes to her life.
As she meets recently widowed Maxine who is experiencing devastating loneliness at her now empty life, and young florist Olivia, she finds that her life is accelerated towards a completely different future.
Having read so many of Jennie’s books, I can happily say that I knew that the characters were in safe hands, what I didn’t know is how their journeys would evolve. There is a steady flow of character development as the story gently flips between the characters and moves along at a very pleasing pace. I honestly can’t choose a favourite character without introducing any spoilers, but I can promise that the conclusion was simply perfect, and their futures become much rosier.
Whether you’ve not read anything by Jennifer Bohnet before, or if you are a fan, I can assure you that you will love this visit and enjoy getting to know this trio of wonderful women.

Tedious and repetitive

The initial story line for this book was , for me, intriguing as to the outcome.
Alas, once the main character, Vivienne, got settled in France, the story took on a very repetitive storyline.
Everyday Vivienne would decide how she was spending her day, followed by, going to the roof garden where she would eat a Vienna loaf, followed by with croissants , all washed down with what sounded like gallons of coffee every day.
I must admit I have only passed through France, but surely their diet has more choice.
Towards the end of this book, I was beginning to feel quite queasy.
The writer had also thrown in a lot of French words in the sentences, why?
Yes, I could have translated them on google, but what a nonsense in the first place to have added them for no other reason than because she speaks French, what was the point to her readers in doing so...
Then to story opened up to include Maxines'
lost daughter and the history of that and it's conclusion.
Olivia, the other main character, went from a
flower arranging / delivery service to buying into a lilac farm?
Far too much going on in this book for me that wasn't in the synopsis, and the ended was just as imagined.

If I’m honest, I’ve always loved the idea of upping sticks and moving to a different country. In reality, probably not so much, but I admire the people who do just that.

A French Adventure follows the stories of three women, Vivienne, Maxine and Olivia, and how their lives progress over the space of a few months as they discover new and old friends and go through some life-changing circumstances. I loved all three women and, of course, I was willing for their journeys to take them in the direction in which they wanted to go.

Jennifer Bohnet shows us how we can overcome the challenges that life can throw at us and how very often we will come out better and stronger on the other side.

I’ve never visited the French Riviera, but after immersing myself in the lives of these three women, I think I could quite happily live there, in a small cottage with the Mediterranean sparkling in the distance.

Thank you to NetGalley, Boldwood Books and Rachel’s Random Resources for the opportunity to read and review A French Adventure by Jennifer Bohnet.

Such a beautiful heartwarming story of a friendship created between three very different individuals who all come together with their own personal struggles.
Vivienne escapes to the beautiful Riviera after the most dramatic news of the breakdown of her long term marriage, her life is in complete turmoil. Here she meets recently widowed Maxine, who soon takes her under her wing and the lovely Olivia, her who shares the villa that she is staying at, who also befriends her. Once the shock dissipates and she shares her story with the others, we watch Vivienne slowly begin to rebuild her life and to create a new future for herself.
We also get to see Maxine’s own story alongside, newly widowed and with an unexpected letter arriving that really changes her life and gives us an insight to her previous heartbreaking experiences.
Olivia has a successful career but longs for love. A blast from her past returns but will they overcome their previous brother/sister like friendship and turn it into love?
This is a delightful book, with wonderful characters and it was really gorgeous to read. I was intrigued and fascinated with all of the characters stories and wanted to see them succeed in their endeavours.
The most wonderful settings too, I loved joining the characters on their adventures around the Rivera, especially to Monaco!
Such a well written character driven story filled with surprises and a delightful, friendly community. It definitely brought some much needed sunshine into my life reading this!

In the middle of the February doldrums comes an effervescent read from Jennifer Bohnert. A French Adventure is a delightful novel. It's a quick read, and a light one, but it's not fluffy. Rather, it's a positive, sometimes funny, always very real, look at female intergenerational friendship and creating a new lifestyle.

As a "mature" reader myself, I gravitated more toward Vivienne and Maxine, who are closer to my age, but as someone who retains her youthful energy, I also enjoyed the perspective the younger character of Olivia brought to the table. I loved that each of these women was independent and fully formed, but that their stories intertwined to form a strong support system for each other.

Opening with a shock for Vivienne, the story then follows a chain of events that leads all three women to a vacation on the French Riviera – who wouldn't want to escape there after their life was upturned?

Author Bohnert handled the three points of view of these characters most ably, shifting focus to highlight each woman's story while weaving them into a cohesive whole. I liked that while the friendship among the three was the central relationship, there was room for romance as well. The love story of Olivia and Thierry was particularly enjoyable, and I cannot say enough about Gilles, who helped Vivienne discern what she really wanted in her post-divorce life.

Overall, A French Adventure is a charming read, and one I highly recommend.

Goes well with: strawberries and champagne.

Escapist, emotional and compelling, A French Adventure is another enjoyable page-turner by Jennifer Bohnet.

Vivienne has just had the rug pulled out from under her feet when her husband of thirty years informs her that their marriage is over. Shocked, betrayed and in desperate need of distraction, she heads to the French Riviera for a writing retreat where she is met by recently widowed Maxine, who is trying to come to terms with her husband’s sudden death and grieving for the life she lost. Joining their group is florist Olivia, who despite being perfectly happy with her life, would love to meet someone special to share her days with.

In the Antibes, secrets are shared, problems discussed and new friendships forged under the sizzling Mediterranean sun. Vivienne, Maxine and Olivia are about to discover that life is for living and that new chapters can be written – but only if they have the courage and strength to be in charge of their own story.

Jennifer Bohnet’s A French Adventure is an engaging and entertaining read about new beginnings, second chances, friendship and healing full of relatable characters readers will cheer for and plenty of drama, emotion and pathos to keep them riveted to its pages. A lovely sun-soaked read perfect for chasing the blues away, Jennifer Bohnet is onto a winner with A French Adventure.

Thank you to Netgalley, the publishing house and the author for the opportunity to read a complimentary copy of this book in return for a review based upon my honest opinion.

I love this author's book; they are a breath of fresh air, a lovely little tale to make you smile and believe in love and happy endings. They always take place in beautiful, scenic locations, this time we are taken to the French Riviera and Monaco.

Vivienne has planned a self writing retreat to the French Riviera, just as she is about to get on the plane, her husband of almost 30 years tells her that he is in love with another woman and wants a divorce. Vivienne is floored, she knew they had been growing apart but assumed that it was because they are both so busy with work and they would catch up like they always do. She heads to the Riviera hoping to be able to come to terms with this news and to still be able to write another best seller. When she hears the name of his fling, she is angry and hurt. But, being away from him might be just what she needs. She makes quick friends with widow, Maxine and the florist who lives under her rental, Olivia. Vivienne tries to see past her problems, which she finds a little easier sitting on her balcony in the sun enjoying the fresh ocean air.

This was lovely story of friendship, family and love. Jennifer Bohnet's book always make me smile.

It is always lovely to be back in the South of France, especially in Jennifer Bohnet's clearly beloved Antibes area.

Having read so many of this author's books by now, i really feel as though I would be right at home on the French Riviera, just from all of her stories, settings and the fact that in the case of this book we get some trips up and down this bit of coast line. Including Monaco somewhere I really would love to visit.

We have three leading ladies, Maxine who is adjusting to life as a widow, Olivia who is delighted her old friend is back in town, and Vivienne who at the airport before she flew to France for her two month writing retreat, discovers her husband is leaving her.

I really enjoyed getting to know all three women, and their families, and seeing how they developed over the course of the book, as new friendships are formed.

I was totally hooked on this book and found it to be a really fast read, that was a joy to devour while sitting in my garden.

I'm always a fan of a book from this author and this was definitely right up there with her best. Very enjoyable.

Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Three women with different things to get through,
One is recently widowed and struggles with what to do,
Another has just learnt her 30 year marriage is through
The third seeks love but is unsure with who.

These three have life changing events ahead,
Bringing new chances and happiness instead.
Their growing friendships help them discover
New adventures with each other.

Family secrets, new opportunities, too,
Uncovering family history they try to do.
A search for others from the past
Will they be reunited at last?

A fascinating tale of living life to the full,
Making the most of everything, not being dull.
Don't let despair ever make you miss
Opportunities which could bring you bliss!

The story is great from beginning to end
Showing the value of folks on whom you can depend.
It also shows that change can also prove to be
The start of a better future just wait and see!

Great beach-reading book

Author Jennifer Bohnet creates stories that you just want to keep going. Characters galore! There’s Vivienne the author who finds out she’s getting a divorce at the airport. Her husband Jeremy is marrying Sadie—yes, Vivienne’s agent Sadie. But late in the book Vivienne meets Gilles, and they instantly connect. Thierry is in love with Olivia, but it takes a while for Olivia to decide to buy the adorable dog Topsy as a birthday gift for Thierry…and realize she’s falling in love with Thierry, too. Maxine is “maman” to Leonie, who shows up surprisingly during one of many parties. But it allows us to get inside Maxine’s cranium to understand how her violent husband treated her during their short marriage. Maxine meets the love of her life, Pierre, and that makes up for the negativity in her first ugly few years with the devil. Bohnet always ends with an epilogue, which ties all the loose ends together. Highly recommend reading!

Another fabulous read from Jennifer Bohnet

I have never found a book by this author that I haven't enjoyed. Absolutely a very talented writer. Every character is individual and their characters and personalities are so strong that somehow you become involved in the trials and joys of their lives. This story tells the tale of several women who have experienced very different lives. As the women become friends we find that each has a problem they need to overcome so that they can move on with their lives. Yes, maybe the story is a little predictable but we all love a happy ending where all the ends are tied up neatly. By the way, the story might lead you to believe that the staple diet of all women in France is a plate of charcuterie with chunks of baguette and a glass of rose as it's all anyone eats throughout the book. That said, this book is still 5* for me.

This is a charming, light read about friendship and starting a new lifestyle. The story alternates between the point of view of the three main characters. Vivienne and Maxine are more mature characters while Olivia brings in the vitality of a younger generation. I loved these characters and how they helped each other through the rough times they were facing. The mystery of Maxine’s past piqued my interest. I also enjoyed the love story between Olivia and Thierry. My favorite character was Gilles because he helped Vivenne decide what she wanted in life after divorce. It is a great beach read!

Vivienne's working trip to the south of France is just what she needs to process her husband's unexpected news regarding their marriage. Meeting Maxine and Olivia helps Vivienne accept and move on from feelings of betrayal and confusion and plan the new start she deserves. Mother and daughter relationships define this story and make it an emotional read. The characters are relatable, and you want them to find happiness. The setting is full of glamour and sunshine and lets you escape. I like this lovely story's friendships, character development and romance.

Another fabulous book from the pen of Jennifer Bohnet

I absolutely loved this book from the very beginning Jennifer has a wonderful way of describing her characters and the scenery. The story is about Vivienne to start with and then includes two more main characters, with a few twists/surprises included as well as the fabulous setting its a book to play on your emotions. If this is the first book you read by Jennifer then you must read the others, if you have read all of her other books then this will not disappoint, the I only disappointment I had was when I finished it! Can't wait for the next book!

A French Adventure by Jennifer Bohnet was another lovely easy romantic read that will brighten your day, especially if its cold and wet outside. This book warms your heart!
Hence why I love Jennifers books. Once I opened my kindle and started to read this book, I wanted it to be half term so I could go back to my farmhouse in France and live the French way of life for a few weeks. Jennifer has a great way of telling these stories especially as I love France.

This is the first time I've read a book by this author. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to get into the story. I read this book on my kindle while I was visiting my parents in the south of France. I was born in the French Riviera but my parents didn't stay very long in this region. The book make me want to visit the area again. I have to say that some of the French lifestyle described in the book sound cliche. But overall it was a good holiday escape and it helps me to unwind after a few months of hard work ( I'm a teaching assistant). I would highly recommend if you are planning to visit France, the perfect companion !

Dejlig roman.

Pure enjoyment!

Story is about lies, betrayal, support, friendship, love, and new beginnings. The most unlikely trio of women become a most beautiful support system. That which is made up of Vivienne, Olivia and Maxine. Vivienne is an accomplished writer and on the way to the airport her whole live changes. She scheduled going to the south of France to finish her book and learns many good things are waiting for her. Olivia falls in love and Maxine has to decide whether she is going to keep her secret from them all. Beautifully written set on the French Riviera.

A French Adventure Jennifer Bohnet

I really enjoyed this book, couldn’t put it down it was so full of emotion, different families who were friends or connected it was busy busy to read. I loved reading about life and the difference in houses and apartments in France. Also 5he weather made me feel I needed to be there. The food sounded delicious and the breakfasts seemed superb. Violet Jam I wish to try too. I wish I could read on to another book as this would make the beginnings of a series, I was left wanting more.

I always enjoy Jennifer Bohnet escapist novels and this one was no exception this one takes place in the south of France and involves 3 women - Maxine has just lost her husband of 9 years and has a secret from her past she needs to confront. Olivia is at odds and when her good friend returns to the Riviera to pursue a new career, her life too will change. Vivienne has just been dumped by her husband of 30 years and comes to finish her novel in France. Her life is about to change as well. Wish a fun read!

could not put this book down!

I am a non fiction reader so this book was a different type of reading experience. The story was riveting and I felt like I was on scene with these characters. I have dreamed of living in France as I love both the country and the language. Set in the south of France, I could visualize the settings and imagine being included in the group. I hated having the tale come to a conclusion but it was a real “feel good” ending.
