Haee and the Other middlings #4

Scribbles from the Middling Cat: Interrelated Entries

Rate this book
Following the delightful, illustrated book collection “Haee and the Other Middlings”, R.S. Vern continues with a collection of interrelated entries written through the eyes of its main cat protagonist, Haee.

Written over 2 years, these scribbles are an introspection of thoughts, musings, and observations that provide a quirky and playful insight into Haee’s world and the middling human condition.

Peppered with charming illustrations among short prose, less is more continues to take precedence in the works of R.S. Vern as we continue to explore the poignancy of middling lives in the 21st century.

R.S. Vern is the creator of book trilogy series: Haee and the Other Middlings. Part I of this series wins the International IndieReader Discovery Award 2013.

An oddly conflicted soul, she finds herself constantly torn between the challenges of saving the world and the realities of making a living. She calls herself a middling – detach, insecure, and most of the time, in a flux.

Haee is a real cat living in her home. Instead of writing as herself, she feels that it is less brutal seeing life through the eyes of a cat.

R.S. Vern holds a B.A. in English Literature, an M.A. in Communications, and a G.D. in Applied Positive Psychology.

R.S. Vern, also known as Vernice Chua, is the founder of Middling Industries.

I won this book in a goodreads drawing.

Prose poems about the difficulties of urban middle class life told from the point of view of a cat. Some illustrations, too. Not a bad package if you're into that sort of thing.

I received this book from a Goodreads giveaway and all opinions are my own.

I wasn’t expecting quite a level of introspection from a cat, but I was pleasantly surprised. These poems often made me laugh, both at the middling outlook on the world or just at very catlike behaviors. Some of the poems didn’t resonate with me (maybe I’m still too young and optimistic) but some definitely do. I loved the March sequence of how one gets rich. A lot of this left me thinking that I’m glad it’s not just me.

Scribbles from the Middling Cat: Interrelated Entries is a collection of prose and poems by R.S. Vern. Inspired by the scribbles of Haee, a middling cat, the author has written a thought-provoking book with captivating art. The book covers insecurities about having a crooked tail, ways to kill an ant, wanting to sleep and not be bothered, and avoiding people but wishing to be among them or like them. The middling cat also discusses social issues like careers, marriage, grief, taxes, investing money, recession, the holidays, and many more topics such as loneliness, the fear of a tumor, anxiety disorder, and allergies. Get a copy of this book and see life through Haee’s eyes.

I loved reading Scribbles from the Middling Cat because it is random and unique. R.S. Vern uses a simple concept of viewing life from a middling cat's perspective but expands it into an analysis of human existence and everyday living. The author has incorporated lessons about finances, believing in yourself and your dreams, living in the moment, and has raised awareness about depression and anxiety. Some notes are funny and will put a smile on your face. The book is well-written with a consistent format. The notes are journal entries with bold headings, dates, and times of the day. The author has included some illustrations referenced in the notes. The images are random, from chairs and scissors to people and scribbles. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves reading random quotes about life and books that view human living from a different perspective.
