When the wizards return home from defeating Malice, Tristan discovers not everyone escaped unscathed. Someone close to him has been infected with the zombie virus. Time quickly becomes an enemy as Tristan searches for an impossible cure to save his friend, but he isn’t ready to give up. Rumor has it that the High Wizard, Ashley Blanchett, has an elixir. The problem is, no one has seen her since magic was outlawed. Can Tristan find Blanchett before his friend becomes one of the undead? Or will the hordes of zombies and daunting secrets be too much against his magic?
Continuing from the end of The Forgotten Prophecy, our protagonists are now faced with having to find a cure to the zombie virus before they lose one of their own. The world building is expanded and we hear more about how the world is now. We dig deeper into magic, in both good and the bad that it brings in the world, as each of our protagonists learn new spells and more about the history of magic. I love the further development and bonding that Tristian, Tibia, and Zombia receive, especially since Tristian isn’t perfect and does make mistakes. The other characters, old and new, are also fleshed out. I was really excited to get more of Blanchett. The antagonists are also given their own time to shine, as they are mostly doing their own planning and only have one real encounter with the heroes in this installment, but that’s totally fine, as it sets up for further conflict. The pacing was excellent and kept me interested the whole way through. I really adored the grayscale pictures the author drew in each chapter to help enhance the story.
The narrator, Mariah Kerr, shines again with her easy to the ears performance with a storyteller vibe. I also loved all the voices she did for the characters that made the story come to life.
The ending promises more conflict and excitement in the next book and I can’t wait for it! Highly recommended for those looking for a fantasy-horror-zombie vibe!
*I received a review copy from the author. All opinions are my own.*
Xzombie has done it again with her second book in the series Wizards of the Apocalypse: The Hidden Wizard. You will be spellbound as you're taken on a magical adventure in this post apocalyptic epic fantasy. Filled with wizards, sorcerers, zombies, elves, and dragons, this enchanting story will draw you into a fantastical world.
The characters Tristan, Zombia, Tibia and Emerson are charters to route for and are well developed. I loved their friendship and journey to help their friend Emerson who was bitten by a zombie. I love the dragon Shadowstalker! I enjoyed the dragon magic and the dragons connection to the characters. I even started to like the antihero Marcus and development of his character. This is an amazing and fun fantasy.
The world building is fantastic and the illustrations add a richness throughout the story. I looked forward to each illustration as they captured the scenes perfectly. This is a must read! I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy, dragons, and magic.
X Zombie’s middle grade fantasy, Wizards of the Apocalypse: The Hidden Wizard, is a fun and fantastic read! In this sequel, Tristan, Zombia, and Tibia face a new challenge when they discover that their friend Emerson was infected with the Zombie virus after being bitten by Zokar, the evil Zombie King. They must race against time to find a cure before Emerson becomes a flesh-eating zombie. Along the way, they encounter new allies, as well as face off against old enemies.
There is so much to love in this book! X Zombie’s writing is clever and enchanting, creating a vivid and immersive world that I couldn’t get enough of. Her illustrations are fabulous too! Every chapter has at least one illustration that captures the action and emotion of the scene perfectly.
For me, the unique characters are what make this book shine. I especially loved the friendship between Tristan, Zombia, Tibia, and Emerson. They are loyal, brave, endearing, and they always have each other’s backs. I also enjoyed the cute, budding romance between Tristan and Zombia. The way they support and encourage each other is just so sweet. Even Marcus, the anti-hero who continues his designs for a coup against Zokar, grew on me in this book. He has a strong “why” that motivates him, and I’m eager to see him succeed.
The book has a good balance of action, humor, and emotional impact, making it a fun and satisfying read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy books with zombies, elves, dragons, magic, curses, and friendship. The Hidden Wizard is a captivating and enchanting tale that will keep you hooked until the end. Don’t miss it!
I loved the first book in this series, and I'm so sorry it took me this long to read the second because author X Zombie has taken us deeper into the world of zombies, wizards, elves, magic, and dragons and the result is AMAZING! I don't read anything scarier than MG horror, which makes this book perfect for me...there's zero gore and violence is limited to standard fantasy sword-fighting, sorcery, and zombie bites. The illustrations in this book are fantastic and perfectly capture the spirit of the characters, who I love even more after getting to know them better. The diverse representation in this series is incredibly well-done while also simply feeling like a natural part of the book (a world where people have different skills, talents, bodies, and minds...what a concept!). Heroes are noble, loyal, and truly striving to do the right thing, while villains are selfish, evil, and destructive, and there's something so refreshing about this portrayal of good and evil, as well as the fact that characters are given opportunities to learn, grow, and change. I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves Netflix's The Dragon Prince series, classic fantasy tales, and zombie stories that leave you smiling rather than screaming.
