According to the revelations made to Mechtilde Schonwerth, who belonged to the Confraternity of Mary Queen of Hearts, and who, at her profession , took the name of Magdalen of the cross, uor knwledge of the angels is a very limited one...
This anthology of stories centering around St. Pio, his spiritual children, and how he helped them through their personal angels came highly recommended. It is a charming collection—uplifting, intriguing, humorous—if you are a Padre Pio devotee or fascinated by our angelic cousins, you will want to check this out.
That said, it is not especially well-organized. There are numerous typos and misspellings; the book overall could do with a good editor. However, if those sorts of things don’t bother you and learning how others have successfully employed their Guardian Angels in both spiritual and practical situations, Fr. Alessio’s book provides many examples. He was the companion of Padre Pio during the final years of the saint’s life. He relates events personally witnessed, as well as those from letters, and the testimonies of other’s, during St. Pio’s life and even after his death.
Content: 6/5; writing style: 3/5 (probably because I'm reading it in translation)
Very fascinating book about Padre Pio and his relationship with his guardian angel! It can be easy to forget about our guardian angels, but this book had numerous examples of all the amazing miracles they worked when people called on them in times of need. This book definitely inspired me to call on my guardian angel more often when I need help in the future!
This books is excellent! I know this is one I am going to re-read down the road. I need to start praying more to my guardian angel. The angels do so much to help us. I highly recommend picking up this book to read.
Sweet little book. It often seems to veer into sentimental superstition, recounting many stories about things like Padre Pio's guardian angel lifting up a car so it would miss a pile of rocks. There are lots of stories, and, to me, the ones about Padre Pio himself seem most plausible. Alessio Parente, the author, who helped Padre Pio when he was quiet elderly, says that P.P. talked with Jesus, Mary, and his Guardian Angel very frequently.
P.P. was quite an advocate of devotion to our Guardian Angels; Roman Catholic doctrine, according to this book, claims that at baptism we are all assigned a Guardian Angel, who is with us for the rest of our lives. It also claims that Mary (Mother of God) is the Queen of Angels, and they do her bidding.
This book talks very little about the stigmata that Padre Pio experienced; I think that's so well known that this book doesn't go into it.
Interesting sidebar for Norristown locals: on page 109, a Mrs. Bauer is quoted: “May God and his angels protect you”, wrote Mrs. Bauer, U.S.A., “like our guardian angels protected us on the journey from Wyoming to Norristown.” (109)
Despite what sometimes seemed to be old-fashioned, over-the-top hagiography, I enjoyed reading it, and am willing to believe that any of the events stated occurred, although probably not all of them, if that makes sense. I'd certainly like to believe we all have Guardian Angels; even better, that we can ask them to, for instance go and alert somebody else's guardian angel that we need help. This happened a lot during Padre Pio's lifetime (perhaps after, as well, although I'm not sure): people who took on the designation of Pio's "spiritual children," when having problems, would ask their Guardian Angels to go to Padre Pio's Guardian Angel for help. I don't think those people could see their own Guardian Angels; they just made the request on faith, and later many claimed that Padre Pio confirmed that their angels had requested help.
This isn't the first book about angels I'd recommend to someone, but if, like me, others are interested in studying various accounts of angelic encounters and angelic presence, this would make a good addition. Be warned, however: the editing is terrible, which you might notice even in the quotations I provide.
There are lots of quotations from the Bible about angels. A few quotes by Padre Pio himself:
Near us is a celestial spirit, who, from the cradle to the tomb, does not leave us for an instant. (64)
When you cannot come to me, send me your Guardian Angel. He can take a message from you to me and I will assist you as much as I can. (page betw. 64-65)
Children have especially beautiful Guardian Angels. Their garments are light-blue decorated with pearls, with a beautiful ever-lasting crown of roses around their heads. (pages betw. 128 and 129)
They are the constant companions of our journeys and the mute witnesses of our everyday lives. (pages between 160-161)
Myriads of angels continuously serve men throughout the course of their earthly lives. (Pages between 192-193)
This man is a fake and a liar. He claims to communicate/pray to angels, and that we should learn how to do so as well. However (although ironically this man promotes the Bible), he needs to read Hebrews 4:14-16: "Put your trust and faith in CHRIST ALONE for your salvation, for He alone is God's appointed Savior."
...... Christ Alone. Why? Because Jesus desires a loving and intimate relationship with each of us. We should be going to him for our needs to be met, not this man or angles.
Isaiah 8:19: "When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God?"
This man is using witchcraft and disguising it as a good thing. Sickening.
I bought this book when I visited San Giovanni Rotondo in Italy this past October. I was on pilgrimage, and we were so privileged to have Mass in the same church, Our Lady of Grace, that was the domain of Padre Pio. I have already read an in-depth biography of Padre Pio a few months back, and I am always looking for more writings about him. This book is a beautiful memoir by Fr. Alessio Parente, who assisted Padre Pio in his last years. A first-hand account about Padre Pio and his Guardian Angel. Short chapters, and a good book to read just before bed.
I was given this book as a Christmas gift from a religious person and really had no intention on reading it. However I had read all on my list so I picked up the book. I was quite surprised. It opened my eyes to wonder whether we all have an unseen guardian who watches over us, whether some unexplained phenomena can be explained by those angels guarding us in times of danger and misfortune. This was explained in telling the life of Padre Pio by one of his assistants Father Alessio Parente. The book is not long and easy to read, and may make you open up to the possibility of angels.
Simple and sweet; can be read in periodic bursts while a passenger in a car or on a plane, over morning coffee, or an evening glass of wine. The highlight is that these stories center around Padre Pio, who, if you are reading this book, you probably have a great fondness for.
A lovely collection of stories on Padre Pio revolving around his Guardian Angel.
Bought from the bookstore at the church in his home town. I wish they had more of these books in circulation at the local bookstore. But perhaps the shipping fees would be horrendous.
