“There’s a high chance that my neighbor is the wanted serial killer.”A string of local homicides has left the residents of Ira Street on edge― everyone but Shavonne. Ahh yes, I too hate it when I just want to do my job as a ghostwriter and my neighbor keeps sticking notes with atrocious spelling onto my door and he is always peeling onions in the hallway, and he also might be a serial killer, how annoying. Anyway, this is what the main character Shavonne has to keep up with in this manhwa, and he is also broke and currently having a rough time altogether, for the last 28 years or so. Enter his handsome but super weird and murderous neighbor Lewellyn who seems to have a more than usual interest in Shavonne. The manhwa explores their relationship and while this was really only the beginning, I couldn't look away. I shamefully have to admit that I kinda ship it, and I especially liked the approach that all people are inherently bad, but is someone specifically bad to you? I'm very interested in how their relationship develops and how much of a dark and toxic romance this will be.

The art was fine but nothing special, and the color palette was mostly grey and brown. While that may fit the story, it was also a little dull and it might be disappointing if you pay for the full color volume. But it would be interesting to see if more colors are added as the story continues. I also didn't love that every other character than Shavonne and Lewellyn was almost comically rude, and all authority like the police or the homeowner was incompetent and unhelpful. And there was a moment when Shavonne was super dumb (when he couldn't possibly know who sent the letters at the end), and I hope that whole situation isn't drawn out for too much longer. Anyway, I see a lot of potential with this story, and I think I'm going to continue at some time. It's only six volumes in total, so it's not never-ending like many other manhwa / webtoons, and that sounds good to me too.

Huge thanks to NetGalley and Yen Press for providing a digital arc in exchange for an honest review.

This had a lot of potential - it's basically a story where a guy finds out that the neighbor who keeps trying to be his friend and is marginally creepy may actually be a Jack the Ripper. But there's something awkward about the way it unfolds and is presented. It may improve in another volume, but I'm not sure I want to find out.

Shavonne is a struggling ghost writer, barely making ends meet, living in a poor neighborhood that has recently been stalked by a serial killer. To make matters worse, he has an actual stalker who keeps leaving cryptic messages on his door and somehow things actually get worse, he has a strange new neighbor who spends all of his time in front of Shavonne's door peeling onions of all things. As Shavonne struggles to find a job to help him move as away from his weirdo neighbor, he discovers a dark secret about him, one that leaves him trapped and indebted to a murderer.

This definitely has some promise. It's interesting how Shavonne just kinda does whatever Llewellyn says even before he finds out he's a murderer. He really seems like such a pushover, and yeah I guess he's had a pretty hard life so I suppose it makes a bit of sense that he is attracted to this human that's showing him kindness but I think he gives in too quickly. Llewellyn is freaking weird, though. I mean, I can see him being both the serial killer and the stalker on one hand, but on the other, I really can't. I'd lean more towards the stalker than anything, though. Either way, he definitely creeps me out.

I was intrigued enough that I'll read volume two to see where this goes.

As always, thanks to NetGalley and Yen Press for the eArc!

not quite the sherlock holmes spin off I thought this was going to be (i genuinely don't know how I got to that idea) however this is a very funny read.

don't you hate it when your next door neighbor keeps peeling onions in the hallway to flirt with you?

Jumbled and directionless, and more than a little creepy (not in a good way). The relationship between the protag and the apparently murderous neighbour, who may or may not also be his rather unpleasant stalker, gave me a very 'abusive relationship' vibe - as if they were likely to wind up in one.

I may be wide of the mark, to be fair, but it left me with a case of the ick.

I read an ARC of this story.

Shavonne is a poor ghostwriter who dreams of getting out of a bad neighborhood. After breaking up with his current FWB, he starts running into a neighbor named Lewellyn, who he finds off-putting immediately. The author/artist did a wonderful job making the tension palpable in the scenes with Lewellyn. I was in a constant state of anxiety reading this, as Lewellyn’s demeanor would change on a dime.

This was a super fun (and tense) read and I’ll absolutely be reading the next volume!

Thank you NetGalley and Yen Press for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Murderous Lewellyn's candlelit Dinner is a story about Shavonne and his mysterious neighbour who seems like like to peel his onions on the stairs outside of their apartments.

I must say, the plot was very slow and tedious in the beginning half and a lot of the mystery surrounding Shavonne's neighbour fell away quite fast when Shavonne stumbled across a pretty significant secret. This resulted in pacing issues where I was a bit bored with the plot in the middle, but the end seemed to pick the plot back up. However, the second half of the book is completely different in theme than the first half, which I found quite confusing.

I think the characters could do with some more dimension, but it's also only the first volume and the end made it promising for both of the characters to grow.

lastly, the art style was OK. sometimes shots were very detailed and I could enjoy myself scanning all of it, but most of it was a bit bland without details. furthermore, the colours used are browns and blacks, which are widely used for this kind of story, but I think it would've been more impactful to have it black and white, or with more lively colours, like using more contrast.

all in all, I think it's a decent story with a promising ending for a sequel.

A walking red flag~

I’m not morally opposed to stories where both characters in a relationship are toxic.

It can be very entertaining—and cathartic to see characters not only succumb to their worst impulses in ways you and I can’t but, also, to watch two people spiral together. A good “folie à deux story” can be very satisfying.

That said, I’m unsure if that is what this story is?

The set up that readers are introduced to in this first volume is odd. In some ways, it feels like a “cat and mouse” tale. But, it’s also very strongly giving Sherlock erotica? Lewellyn (the non-standard spelling of this name gives me and my Welsh/Celtic ancestors anxiety btw) is a blend of Sherlock and Moriarty—but from Moffat’s television series.

Also, circling back to that thing about relationships where both characters are toxic being entertaining sometimes, the relationship(?) between Lewellyn and Shavonne is strained at best and abusive at worst. At least, that’s how it appears in this first volume.

I mean, Shavonne isn’t on even footing with Lewellyn—who may be the country’s prince?—here. Shavonne isn’t problematic; he’s just poor and a struggling writer. (Same.) And, Lewellyn is clearly taking advantage of that. And, is maybe a serial killer? TBA on that one.

The only thing these two characters have in common so far is that they both desperately need manicures.

Anyway.

I feel like this is a series for the girlies who let “Killing Stalking” rot your brain. It’s definitely catering to the niche of readers who enjoy a horror/romance series~

ARC provided by Netgalley and the Publisher.

This was very weird, tonally. It was just a strange reading experience. I can't really pin down why it was weird, but I think it has something to do with nothing being too much. Everything in here was mild, no one was being creepy enough for me to call them out on it, no one was scarry enough to be frightening, and nothing was romantic enough for me to get those vibes either. Everything was just there and happened. The description hypes the story up way more than is dementated here and I'd be curious to see how volume two escalates things but right now there is kind of just nothing.

Shavonne is well and truly trapped in a forced relationship with a killer. I want to know more! Like all about Lewellyn, it’s clear he’s obsessed with shavonne and onions but the rest of him is a complete mystery.

Thanks to NetGalley and Yen Press for the ARC copy. This has not affected my review at all, which are my own thoughts.

A series of murders has left the residents of Ira Street feeling uneasy, more than usual for a street full of trouble. Although that’s none of Shavonne’s business, a penniless author too busy dealing with deadlines and trying to secure future payments to pay any amount of attention to the matter. Moreover since he's also quite busy and interested in figuring out what is going on with his strange new neighbor: Lewellyn, a young and handsome man who spends his days peeling onions on the stairs right outside Shavonne’s apartment. Shavonne tries not to concern himself, but when a gruesome discovery at Lewellyn’s place during a candlelit dinner, both his neighbor’s eccentricities and the murders plaguing the community become harder to ignore.

A very first exciting volume to a series that could very well become a favorite of mine. I flew through it in a few hours, telling myself "just one more chapter", because I needed to know what happened next, until I finished it. And here we are.

I loved this one. The characters were amazing each in their own way, Shavonne's feelings toward Lewellyn were amazingly portrait and the world they inhabit is quite interesting. I hope we get to see more of Ira Street and its residents in future volumes, as well as the secondary characters; the one I definitely want to see again is Fawkes, Shavonne's only friend and mentor.

On the other hand, I'd like to talk more about each of the main characters.

So, first, Shavonne, our protagonist. A poor author that's spent years writing for others, living by scraps and day by day, barely been able to pay his rent. An orphaned man with no friends. no job and no idea in socializing. Probably an annoyance to the police and a man of values, like when he discovers a gruesome scene at Lewellyn's place and starts a dangerous game with him while his (Shavonne) mind tells him to go to the police. From this point on, their relationship goes up to the maximum level, because they're very aware of the other, what they do and, most probably, what they think after the incident. Moreover because there's is a slight chance that Lewellyn is also stalking him, and that sends actual shivers through his back (understandably so). Hilarious, relatable and quite probably the most reasonable person of this story, Shavonne is a character I'd follow anywhere gladly; though, preferably, the farthest away possible from Lewellyn😂

Seconf, Lewellyn, new neighbor and potential love interest to Shavonne, Weirdly obsessed with onions and with Shavonne, it is soon shown that this man could be a murderer, yet he treats Shavonne more nicely and with a warmth that anyone has ever shown to Shavonne, so of course, the poor man is confused. Just as Lewellyn is confusing to us, because of his changing nature that I loved to see and gave me as much goosebumps as it gave Shavonne, I'm sure. An unpredictable man, Lewellyn repels me and makes me want to know more about him all the same. These characters tend to walk a thin line, an anything could make me love him or hate him one sided, so I'll definitely read future volumes to see what happens with his character👀

What makes the story shine and really work for me is Shavonne and Lewellyn's relationship, how it goes from not knowing each other at all, to Shavonne getting used to see the other at his stairs, peeling onions, to dining together to this push and pull influence by the incindent at Lewellyn's house and how it defines how they will interact from then on. Even Shavonne says that, if that hadn't happened, maybe they would have had a very different relationship. It's all so good... the strongest point of the story, in my opinion, and what will make MLCD shine or deep dive to the ground and be quickly forgotten.

Finally, the art was okey-ish. Some panels were detailed amazingly, while others were more simple and could have used another angle, in my opinion. Overall, though there were some pages that could have been better, specially at depicting the characters, it didn't affect the story at all, still letting us (the readers) know exactly what was going on. So, not the biggest fan of the art just yet, but it is good for the story it is telling.

Also, I hope we get to know more about the murders, the modus operandi and such in next books, because it was what I came for😂
So, yes, I do recommend it. A story of murders where a romance could flourish amid the murders and personal desperation, sprinkled with great interactions and well-crafted characters is something I'm always up for reading
