Some very eccentric judgements but absolute peak performance film criticism here!

Refreshingly opinionated film studies book. Durgnat hates film academia but is an academic himself. This paradox makes this an odd study but it's a book I keep coming back to for a fresh and honest take on films I know and ones I'd like to see.

Raymond Durgnat's wonderfully eccentric prose style renders the academic study truly delightful. No directorial sacred cow (from Alfred Hitchcock to Laurence Olivier) is safe from his scabrous wit, and though his opinions are harsh, his expression of them always remains intelligent and actually gut-bustingly hilarious. I'd recommend reading it aloud.
