Not only does Nietzsche For Beginners delve into the scandalous life and considerable works of Friedrich Nietzsche, it also give a clear picture of the puzzling time in which he lived. We meet the luminaries of the day - Richard Wagner, Bismarck, Freud, and Darwin - and see their influences on his work. We also receive introductions to some of the great minds that preceded and shaped his writing. Luther, Schopenhauer, Hegel, and Kant. Sautet clarifies the individual philosophers and their contributions, making the book an important introduction to philosophy. Nietzche's famous ménage à trois, his theories of Superman, of the Antichrist of nihilism, and Zarathustra, and his posthumous and misinformed use by the Nazis make for a fascinating read.
A disorganized, shallow mess. Trying to learn about Nietzsche's ideas from this book is like trying to learn chemistry by standing in a room full of people shouting random chemistry facts at you.
I knew nothing about the life and teachings of Fredrich Nietzsche when I picked up this book and I know practically nothing putting the book down again.
I had hoped it would teach me the basics in a clear, concise manner. What I got was a poorly put together, gimicy idea in which Nietzsche's life was portrayed in a black and white comic book fashion. This wouldn't have been so bad if the book didn't already presume an impressive knowledge of 19th century philoshopical figures and events in history.
A book for beginners should be exactly that but I felt alienated and confused by this book. No good at all.
I think it's fair to say that I found this book interesting, even if I felt like there was so much of it that I did not understand. Friedrich Nietzsche is one of the most influential and controversial philosophers of all time, and I generally like the "For Beginners" book series. But I'm not sure that much of what was written here made much sense to me. Maybe I'm the dumb-dumb who doesn't "get it," but yeah. This is going in the donation pile, may it find a home with someone else who can comprehend it.
Graphic novel exploring the life and works of nietzsche
Claims to be a beginners guide but only in sofar as it over simplifies and doesn't explain ideas.. To gain much from it it is best to have previously read nietzsche
That said what it does a great job it contextualises nietzsche's work alongside historical and personal events
This was an interesting graphic novel. I was familiar with the views of Nietzsche and this book gives a short history of philology and nihilism originating in Germany. Although non fiction, this was refreshing because I am a sucker for historical events.
I have read other books in this series which have been really good introductions for beginners. I felt this one was rather unclear and messy. I think it must be challenging to present philosophy in graphic novel format but that shouldnt be an excuse.
Not a book that delves deep into Nietzsche’s ideas and thoughts behind them.
The book presents a chronological history of Nietzsche's life, detailing his birth, the years he wrote his books, and other significant activities along with the corresponding years.
A very quick read for somebody interested of what Nietzsche did. (Not really a book that showcases whom he was)
This is maybe a personal preference, but the reason I liked this book was because it focussed more on Nietzsche as a person than on his writing. Or rather, it used Nietzsche as a person to understand his writing. This use of the personal was a convenient gateway that allowed me to understand both better.
Fun and does a good job of summarising his ideas. It could have gone into more depth on some of it as the writing is very sparse, but the historical context Sautet places Nietzsche in, and the comparison with ancient Greece (at least as far as FN was concerned) is interesting to know.
This was mostly about his life and not his work. that said , the fact that he pretty much seemed to love authoritarianism and was against freeing the common man from slavery make it hard to think that I would find his philosophy appealing.
