A super useful text for anyone looking to understand the rich background of the fantasy genre. Timmerman's study breaks fantasy down to its most basic components and discusses them each in turn in a rich way that will keep the reader's interest, even if academic scholarship isn't their normal genre of choice.
Timmerman writes, "There is an enormous and unquenchable thirst in humankind for precisely this opportunity for pause," and it truly makes one look at the fantasy genre differently, particularly in our current, pandemic-plagued climate wherein we're all desperate for a bit of escapism.

Interesting and everything, but a bit bogged down by detailing all the specific examples in numerous fantasy/sci-fi books. Too much Watership Down, not enough lofty generalizations? Maybe?
