Kayla's world revolves around her horse and a certain young man, but when her new-born cousin disappears mysteriously, she becomes involved in solving the kidnapping
This is not my usual kind of read and so I went into it thinking I might not finish or perhaps I'd skim, but it ended up being surprisingly good. Reading it critically/with an editorial eye, there are some small fixes I would have made if I was writing it. Overall, though, Laundrie has the mind for good storytelling, attention to detail, and use of metaphor. I loved the ongoing theme of birds of prey paralleling the kidnapping. Having met this local author in person as well, I can confirm that her experience and knowledge of the natural world, as highlighted in this book, gives a lot of weight to the descriptions of Wisconsin flora and fauna. Would recommend this to older teen readers as it deals with the processing of grief and budding romance.
