Still of the Night finds Burke and Blade searching for Charlotte Nelson, a young woman who’s not what she seems. She vanished off the face of the earth two weeks ago and she nor her car nor the belongings she had with her have been seen since. Who is the mysterious man in black caught on camera following her the night of her disappearance? Is her creepy fiancé, Logan Owens, responsible? Or one of her many fans from Cloud Nine where she danced? Was it the maintenance man from her apartment complex who’s hiding something sinister in the shed behind his mobile home out in the middle of nowhere? Or was it the rent-a-merc security company she worked for part-time? Burke and Blade have to find her before it’s too late—and they have to do so while caring for and protecting their niece, Alana, and while Lexi Miller, Burke’s girlfriend and former probation officer, lies fighting for her life in ICU. A thrilling story with so many twists and turns and laughs you’ll read all night!
New York Times bestselling and award-winning novelist Michael Lister is a native Floridian best known for his literary suspense thrillers as well as his two ongoing mystery series, the prison chaplain John Jordan "Blood" series and the hard-boiled, 1940s noir Jimmy "Soldier" Riley Series, and the post-apocalypic suspense thriller Cataclysmos.
The Florida Book Review says that "Vintage Michael Lister is poetic prose, exquisitely set scenes, characters who are damaged and faulty" and Michael Koryta says, “If you like crime writing with depth, suspense, and sterling prose, you should be reading Michael Lister," while Publisher's Weekly adds, “Lister’s hard-edged prose ranks with the best of contemporary noir fiction.”
Michael grew up in North Florida near the Gulf of Mexico and the Apalachicola River in a small town world famous for tupelo honey.
Truly a regional writer, North Florida is his beat.
Captivated by story since childhood, Michael has a love for language and narrative inspired by the Southern storytelling tradition that captured his imagination and became such a source of meaning and inspiration. He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in theology with an emphasis on myth and narrative.
In the early 90s, Michael became the youngest chaplain within the Florida Department of Corrections. For nearly a decade, he served as a contract, staff, then senior chaplain at three different facilities in the Panhandle of Florida—a unique experience that led to his first novel, 1997’s critically acclaimed, POWER IN THE BLOOD. It was the first in a series of popular and celebrated novels featuring ex-cop turned prison chaplain, John Jordan. Subsequent books in the series include BLOOD OF THE LAMB, FLESH AND BLOOD, THE BODY AND THE BLOOD, BLOOD SACRIFICE, and RIVERS TO BLOOD, and each takes readers through the electronically locked gates of the chain-link fences, beneath the looping razor wire glinting in the sun, and into the strange world of Potter Correctional Institution, Florida’s toughest maximum security prison. Of the John Jordan series, Michael Connelly says “Michael Lister may be the author of the most unique series running in mystery fiction. It crackles with tension and authenticity,” while Julia Spencer-Fleming adds “Michael Lister writes one of the most ambitious and unusual crime fiction series going. See what crime fiction is capable of.”
Michael also writes historical hard-boiled thrillers, such as THE BIG GOODBYE, THE BIG BEYOND, and THE BIG HELLO featuring Jimmy "Soldier" Riley, a PI in Panama City during World War II. Ace Atkins calls the "Soldier" series "tough and violent with snappy dialogue and great atmosphere . . . a suspenseful, romantic and historic ride."
Michael Lister won his first Florida Book Award for his literary novel, DOUBLE EXPOSURE, a book, according to the Panama City News Herald, that “is lyrical and literary, written in a sparse but evocative prose reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy.” It is a contemplation of life and death, art and meaning, set deep in the swamps of the Apalachicola River, a thriller about a wildlife photographer whose camera traps capture a crime, that shows the beauty and danger of the Panhandle paradise.
His second Florida Book Award was for his fifth John Jordan novel BLOOD SACRIFICE.
I’ve written a lot of reviews for Michael Lister, and whether they be for John Jordan, Jimmy Riley, or Blade and Burke, et al, they’re all just really good stories.
Author Lister has a bona fide gift for storytelling, and Still of the Night is another prime example. The story develops, seemingly without drama, kind of “I know where this is headed…”, but its twist, while knowing one is coming, is not what you were expecting.
The Blade and Burke series is a good one, and while you can jump in with Still of the Night, I totally recommend starting at the beginning. The reading is enriched with the background.
Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2023 As usual Lister has written another page turner. Could not stop reading. The fact that the story line continues with the life of Burke and Blade. Thus gathers odd family brought together by fate and still remains together throughout their lives into adulthood. The do what they do best, finding the lost souls of the night. It is a who done it which keeps you on your toes, throughout the book. Looking forward to the next book in this series.
I like the author's books they are interesting, full of twists , and a puzzling plot to figure out. Burke snd Blake are searching for Charlotte, one of her many names. She just vanished, and there is a list of many who could be involved. We think we know who is involved and why, that changes as we read more. Well written and I enjoyed. Given arc for my voluntary review
Another fabulous page turner from this blinding author. The girlfriend of Burkes' nemesis had gone missing two weeks ago. The hunt is on to find her preferably alive but it is not looking good. Plenty to keep our intrepid PIs trying to work out exactly what has been going on and to wade through the red herrings. A super series!
Another amazing book by Michael Lister it will definitely keep you sitting on the edge of your seat there was a lot of turns and twists to the very end I could not figure out who done it until the very end and I was very surprised
I was given an advance copy of the ebook for free in return for an honest review. This has no impact on my review. I have read all the books in this series and enjoyed them all. Still of the Night is the best in the Burke and Blade series so far and I highly recommend it.
An excellent mystery thriller with a well-developed storyline and outstanding realistic main characters. Contains plenty of action, lots of twists, and a well written plot. A page turning who done it that I highly recommend. Another winner by Michael Lister.
Another great mystery. Burke and Blade are trying to find a missing woman. It seems as if every evidence of her is gone, will they be able to find her in time. Suspenseful, secrets to grip you until the very end.
I was provided an advanced copy for an honest review and as all my reviews of Michael Lister's book this one was just as amazing. It is a page turner with twists all along the way. Sit back and enjoy the ride!
I highly recommend it. Well written, page turner, great characters, twists & turns. Love it. Excellent job. I received a copy and voluntary leaving a review.
