Steven's mom starts off the tale with the old 'whip and carrot' technique, a finger-wagging ultimatum about a bad grade on his report card. Rather than trying to understand Steven or meet him on his level, she proposes a reward for improving or punishment for not improving. A lot of us have been there, though I'm sure trying to be helpful is a better approach. From here, Steven is drawn into a book to learn long words with their concepts like a business training manual. While the concepts are valuable and helpful, they're also a lot to ask a child to absorb both in vocabulary and functionality. This could be helpful for teachers or parents who are familiar with these traits and are willing to do the work of explaining from a child's point of view.
