Loved it!
Don't pick this book up to read unless you have nothing else to do because believe me you won't put it down until finished, I've read many books set in Liverpool during WW2 and enjoyed most of them but this is by far one of if not my favourite....Loved it!

A delightful nostalgic read spanning the 2nd world war. I found the first third a little non eventful, and more like a wartime soap opera. Once over this hurdle (and the war in full swing) I found the storyline more thrilling and I was more vested in each of the characters lives. I appreciated the feminist undertones but I felt there needed to be more backstory to the evil traits of Georgie Deegan. I wanted to know why he was so obsessed with money. Maybe I was looking to find sympathy to his devious ways. After some of the decisions he took, I realised there was no room for sympathy. I would be interested to read more of these Liverpool wartime books to see if I take to the stories more easily.

Easy reading tale set in Liverpool, beginning in 1938 it follows the lives of a poor, hardworking couple trying to do their best for their four children.
Life is one long struggle, they encounter one heartache after another, World War Two begins and their eldest son is a no good baddie.

A bit of everything in this book - love, betrayal, tragedy, greed, hardship .... you name it, it's got it! The descriptions of the Blitz and the devastation Liverpool saw throughout the war years was captured well.
With strong characterisation it also told of how religion can divide friends and families. A good read which I recommend.

Good read
Kept me interested. The characters were well represented. A typical family with all the issues of that time. War is terrible but we don’t need war when ordinary people can cause so much trouble to each other.

What an amazing read, I really enjoyed the story, from having a great life, and a wicked brother who lost them everything, love, happiness and the war that they fought in, so much heartache, a fantastic read,

I really wanted to love this book. I found it really hard to get into, but maybe that's more about me and what I like to read, than the book. It's written really well and you cant help but love the main character Katie.

Another good Liverpool war saga, although it seemed to jump in time rather quickly nearer the end compared to the first parts of the book. Also a twist in the Epilogue.
