Best historical series ever. This one has a unique touch of skirmishes interspersed with the intense boredom, battles against the weather, and mental struggles soldiers underwent in some of the most remote parts of the planet.

This volume covers the little pockets of fighting around the world during WWII, which mostly end up being the clashing of colonial interests in each area: Greenland, Iraq / Syria, Iran, Madagascar, Aleutians, Dutch East Indies (spoiler alert: the fighting conditions were terrible in all of these places). I was particularly interested in how vigorously the Vichy French defended colonies from even the Free French.

Great book that documents the history of WWII's most unknown and remote campaigns. The stories are fascinating because there is so much focus on the major battles that little thought is put towards the sacrifice in these areas. Many of them were crucial bases for supporting supply lines or intelligence gathering for the Allies.

Little know parts of the world conflict are covered in this interesting volume. From Alaska to the mid-East with much more, a worthwhile read for anyone with a general interest in WWII. Included is the usual Time-Life collection of hundreds of photographs, illustrations, artwork, and maps that supplement clear and interesting narratives.

Bought this Life Time series in the early 1980's on WWII, a volume came to the house every 2 or 3 months so I could take my reading. It was very informative and enjoyable read, I still use it for reference.
