This is Part one of The Dark Kings. There will be four installments to this story released as follows: (These are $1.99 each on Amazon)

Part one: 97 pages... available now!
Part two: 80 pgs TBR 4/15/2014
Part three: 80 pgs TBR 4/22/2014
Part four: 80 pgs TBR 4/29/2014

OR... you can wait until 4/29/2014 and get all four in one bundle for $7.59!

For fans of this author and those who have read...The Dark Heat: The Dark Kings stories... this appears to be a spin-off of that series. AND guess what?? I actually have that book but haven't read it yet... didn't realize it was by the same author! :) So, I'll be stopping to read that series in between the release of these novellas. You can absolutely read this as a stand alone though... I just want to know the back stories of the characters from that series who are also in this one.
The blurb actually does a pretty good job of giving you the basics of the overall story so I won't elaborate any further on the plot. But, I am definitely hooked into the story. Hot and steamy dragon shifters who live masked behind Dreagan industries in one of my favorite settings: The Scottish Highlands! The Scottish accents alone just make me smile.
I love all of the characters so far and I am a huge fan of strong, smart heroines. Denae is just that and well, she has to be since she is a secret agent. Keegan and Denae are clearly drawn to one another and I can already feel the tension!

Well written, engaging with great characters! Looking forward to part two...

Darkest Flame (Dark Kings) can be read either as a serial in 4 parts or as a book, I recommend the latter unless you’re a fan of cliffhangers. This review is for the book in its entirety.

Whilst this book can be read as a standalone novel, it’s also a continuation of Donna Grant’s Dark Warrior series, and when said warriors show up in the second half of the book, I did feel like I was missing some background details. Nothing major, mind you, but if you’re interested in Donna Grant’s books, why not start at the beginning?

This new series centers around the Dragon Kings; the immortal leaders of different dragon clans. The clans themselves have been sent to another realm, only the Kings remain. Their goal is to safeguard mortals from the Dark Fae and the vengeful leader of the Silver dragons.

Kellan, the leader of the Bronzes, holds no love for humanity. A terrible incident 1300 years ago, caused him to withdraw from the world and enter a long sleep. He awakes to discover two MI5 agents fighting to the death in his secret, underground cave. Despite his hatred for humanity, he saves Denae Lacroix, the sole survivor. As it turns out, she’s been set up as dragon bait by infiltrators in MI5 who are working with the Dark Fae. Their goal is to expose the Kings and destroy Dreagan, their Scottish stronghold. Before Denae knows it, she’s a pawn in a war between the Dragon Kings, the Dark and the Light Fae that she never knew existed. Kellan on the other hand fights a very different battle, his own unwanted attraction to a human female.

Seeing the very alpha, very stubborn and sexy dragon fall for his little, feisty human was delicious. As were their adversaries. True to form, I tend to fall a little for the evil guys. And the Dark Fae were interesting enemies: Soul sucking fiends who feed off humanity; sexually, physically and emotionally. Their leader, Taraeth was the quintessential bad-boy: Overconfident, vicious, and oh, so sexual. Still, I’d like to know more about the Dark Fae, not only as enemies. Seeing their society from the inside would be a plus, though I doubt it will happen. I’d also like to know more about the Light Fae turned dark; his connection to Rhi, his former Light Fae friend. Rhi was another interesting character. Hopefully we’ll learn more of her background story and connection to the Kings in future installments. (Or perhaps her story’s already been told? See, that’s why I would recommend to start at the beginning.)

Generally I liked this story a lot, but there were things that almost caused me to gag a little. Halfway through the serial I lost count of the number of times the author felt the need to inform us that Kellan has got celadon eyes and that Denae’s eyes are of the whisky-colored variety. I get it! How often do we need to be reminded of their unusual eye colors?! Cheeeeeeeeeeeezy!

Despite my eye color annoyance, I feel this book deserves a total of 3.75 stars, I’m rounding up to 4. The last to parts were by far my favorites.

First in an exclusive four-part e-serial by New York Times bestselling author Donna Grant!
In Darkest Flame: Part 1 Kellan has been asleep for over a thousand years. The Keeper of the Dreagan History, he prefers to be left alone, especially by the humans he despises. But when an alluring woman is left to die in his cave, he is moved by her situation—and her beauty—to help her in the only way he knows how…to take her to Dreagan Manor…

Betrayed and left for dead, Denae has little idea of how she ended up at Dreagan. Promised with a new identity in exchange for information, Denae knows this is her chance at a new life. What she doesn't expect is the uncontrollable desire she feels for her irresistibly sexy rescuer. A man whose secrets appear to run as dark as his passion…

Part 1 of four of the Darkest Flame Dark Knights series. Cassie and Kellan are fighting from giving in to the attraction between them. Kellan's taciturn demeanor convinces the attraction is all on her side so to save her heart and pride she refuses to show how she feels.

Well defined characters with a strong plot. As the first in a new series it sets a stable and defined basis for the books to come.

My rating of "Darkest Flame - Part 1" is 4.75 out of 5 stars.

Darkest Flame Part 1 (Dark Kings) by Donna Grant

***Received an ARC of this book from the Publisher in exchange for an honest review***

Overall Rating: 4 Rockin’ ★★★★

Denea is an American recruited by M15 to carry out top secret missions because of her photographic memory. While on an assigned mission, her teammate tries to kill her. She is forced to defend herself and kills Matt instead. Before she kills him, Matt tells her that she is the bait for the mission and he was to wound her to setup the people on Dreagan.

“I don’t know what the real goal was. Matt’s mission was to leave me behind so I would be killed by you. I was told we were to do reconnaissance on everyone at Dreagan after we found whatever was in that cave.”

Kellan had watched and listened as Denea had fought for her life. He had been impressed by her skills and called for help to heal her wounds. He had taken her back to the Manor where they would question her to find out why she was on there. Denae explains her mission and what the outcome was suppose.

“As I already told you, while in the water, Matt tried to kill me. I wasn’t ready to die or be used as bait, and I was angry at being betrayed. Only one of us was going to come out of the attack alive. I made sure it was me.”

Kellan had been asleep for thirteen hundred years and he still held the hatred of humans strongly in his heart. He is asked to keep an eye on Denea and learn everything she knows about M15. He unwillingly agrees to get close to her and learn all that he can. Little does Kellan know that an unholy alliance has been formed between the dark fae and an unknown adversary against the Dragon Kings. The dark fae want Kellan.

Taraeth’s smile was cold and calculating. “You’ll let me have a Dragon King?”

“Take as many as you can capture, and use them as you see fit.”

Taraeth considered the new plan for several minutes before he folded his arms over his chest. “There is just one I want.”

He nodded, “Ah, yes. Kellan. Why him?”

The manor is about to come under attack and Denae must be moved before M15 arrives. So a new identity must be secured and Denae moved.

“How close are we to getting the new ID for Denae?” Kellan asked Rhys. Rhys checked his phone. “In a matter of hours.”
“It needs to be faster,” Henry said. “you need to make sure there’s no trace of her when M15 comes looking.”

Kellan is fighting his fascination with Denae and Denae wants Kellan.

Rhi’s smile widened when she noticed how the mortal’s eyes softened when she looked at Kellan.

Darkest Flame is the first full length novel in the new series by Donna Grant and it was fantastic. It is an action-packed, thrilling paranormal adventure into a world of magic, dragons, Fae, secrets and evil. The Dark King series is a spin-off of her Dark Warrior and Dark Sword series and has had 3 novellas prequel to introduce the world of magic and dragons. Kellan is a dragon king and has decided to sleep instead of dealing with the humans of the world. For over 1300 years he’s been in his cave and was awakened when he hears 2 MI-5 agents come there and start a fight. When one kills the other and the one left is hurt, he had a choice to help her or let her die. In helping her, Kellan starts something that will irrevocably change the course of his and the other Dragon Kings’ lives.
Denae Lacroix is an MI-5 agent that has been sent on a mission to Dreagan to find out the secret that the place holds. Her partner betrays her and wants her injured for bait. Bait for what? She survives the fight but is hurt badly and is saved by Kellan. The company that she worked for betrayed her and she doesn’t know why. She is a bit lost now not knowing where to go and who to trust. Knowing that she will be hunted she accepts help in getting her a new identity to leave and be on her own. What happens is that she begins to care about the men at Dreagan especially Kellan. Her plans to leave go terribly wrong when she finds that MI-5 and the Dark Fae have joined forces and want to capture her and Kellan. Who wants them and why? All good questions that will hopefully get answered through a bit of adventure and danger. Denae is one strong woman and honorable.
Kellan is a complex character who believes that all human are all alike after they betrayed the dragons all those years ago. He eventually sees that Denae isn’t like that and he finds it difficult to hold onto that belief. His opinion of her changes when he finds her courage and bravery attractive and wants to protect her from those forces that want her. Kellan is torn in his attraction and fights it in the beginning. The author draws out the attraction and the fighting Kellan goes through to not give into it. When he does it all combusts into a passion and desire and it was definitely worth the wait.
There is a large cast of secondary characters that move the story along and add another layer of backstory that influence the dragon’s problems. Rhi, a Light Fae, once had a dragon lover that hasn’t been revealed. Tristan is a new Dragon King but his past is revealed which will definitely cause repercussions. All mysteries that entice the reader to want to know more. I haven’t read the other series and I feel that this story can be read as a stand-alone novel without being lost. Darkest Flame is an engrossing story and I was glued to my Kindle. The romance between Kellan and Denae is slow building, and it wasn’t an easy road, to find their deserving happiness. This is a good beginning for a new series and I look forward to more magical, dragon romance.

Despite this being a continuation (or spinoff) of the Dark Kings series, I wasn't lost which can happen many times if you don't follow a series in order. In fact, it got me intrigued enough to go back and read anything I may have missed.

Denae Lacroix works for a special ops team of the British government called M15. She was recruited from the states because she has a photographic memory. That, combined with her fighting skills, is what caught the eye of the recruiters of M15. Or so she thought. She is assigned to a special case - she and her teammate are told to infiltrate Dreagon Industries territory on a very unclear case. M15 wants to take Dreagon down, badly. With little to no instruction, Denae takes her assignment, and that's where this story begins. Something happens, which lands her right smack dab in the middle of not only Dreagon lands, but the dragon manor.

There were so many elements I liked about this short story. The military/covert ops aspect, dragon shifters, Scottish men (who are actually the dragons), and some steamy romance really made for an enjoyable few hours' time (which is all it took to read this!). I especially liked the relationship and the slow (almost agonizingly so) pace of development between Kellan and Denae. Because of something that happened millennia ago, Kellan loathes humans and mortals, and Denae is nothing but a mere human. I always like when enemies are "thrust" together in situations such as this because I like watching the couple move from hate to understanding, and eventually (hopefully) to the HEA. Makes the relationship more exciting to me.

This short story is part one of four (Darkest Flame 1-4). They can be purchased alone, or they can be purchased together in full-novel form (Darkest Flame). The Flame stories are part of the Dark Kings series and I plan to go back and read from the beginning, not for the sake of understanding this particular book, but to experience more dragon shifters falling in love. I will also warn you now - because this is a serial, the ending isn't really an ending. It does end on a cliffhanger, so that's something to take into consideration if you only plan to try one story of the series out. You can always avoid the cliffies by just waiting until all 4 stories are published together in the novel.

'I received a copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review'

Denae is an MI5 agent and she was sent on a mission that she doesn't feel right about with a partner she does not like. When she is betrayed by the agency and Matt attacks her it is kill or be killed. When she wakes up injured in Draegan she gives them the information they want even knowing that they are going to kill her no matter what. She knows too much. She did not expect to have such strong feelings for one of the men. Especially one who seems to hate her.

Kellen is a Dragon shifter and a Dragon King. He is the keeper of History and he hates humans. He has been betrayed by them, more then once and is done with them. He has been asleep in his cave for about thirteen hundred years and was not happy to be woken up. What he see's of the human woman in his cave impresses him. He does not want anything to do with her though. When they find out that she was bait for them he is ordered to get close to her. He never imagined he would want to be close to her.

While trying to get Danae to safety where MI5 won't be able to find her they run into some trouble.

My opinion: I was hooked right from the start. This author definitely writes a great story that draws you in. I thought that it was well written with well developed characters. I have not read the first couple books in this series but I will remedy that soon! I am eager to read the next installment of this book to find out what else happens with Kellen, Danae and the other Dragon Kings! Although it is always best to read a series from the beginning it is not necessary with this book it can be read as a stand alone. I highly, highly recommend reading. I think I have found another author that is going to be one of my favorites!

Donna Grant has been a name that constantly gets recommended and I've only just started to sniff out her work but boy am I pleased that I have! She writes amazing stories about dragons and warriors and if you are fond of a highland brogue then this offering will have you sit up and begging!
This is the first instalment of a serialisation that is being made available to readers in weekly chunks. This gives readers a choice to buy and read almost like a serial or wait for the complete book when it's released. A great marketing move but it's important readers are aware exactly what they are buying. If new to the author though it's a fabulous way to sample her style of writing.
As I've mentioned it's just the beginning of a much longer story so I wouldn't want to give too much away here and the synopsis is quite descriptive. What I would say is although there's no sexy time happening it's very clear that the hero Kellan is going to be a very demanding male with a voracious appetite ! He's an angry dragon shifter with an axe to grind but he's clearly met his match in the brave Denae. She's a woman of indomitable courage and fortitude but I fear she's about to be tested in ways she never imagined. I liked that the author used a strong heroine and not a whiney one as I feel a shrinking Violet just would not compliment the hero.
I found this very easy to read and happily even though I'm still quite new to this author Ms Grant is very good at world building so I happily could understand what's happening but clearly more information about past events will unfold as the story progresses. Try not to get too impatient if reading these as they are released as Im pretty sure the wait will be worthwhile. A great beginning and I'm off to read part two!

Denae Lacroix is an American working for the M15 , she is strong, beautiful and has a photographic memory. She is sent on a secret mission with a fellow M15. To Scotland to investigate the get info on the mysterious Dreagon industries. Where she finds out that she is going to be used as bait to bring out the mystery . As she survives the onslaught of her partners assault. They awake the mysterious Kellan , who is a dragon who has been asleep for centuries . As he watches her there is a pull between them

Will they survive each other and the impending fae war

This is the first book in the series. Donna takes us for a ride . Between Denae finding out about the dragon Kings and not wanting to go back to the M15 .

Kellan is one very hot man/dragon king . That does not like humans and has been sleeping for centuries but he is attracted to Denae but is fighting it evey which way.

As the M15 loom closer they must hide Denae. Will Kellan be able to keep his mind in the game to save her

I have bought quite a few Donna Grant novels on my iPad but have yet to get around to reading them. The covers always intrique me and make me want to pick them up. Well this time I did, and I quite enjoyed it. I may be one of the few but I like how the full book is broken down in 4 parts. You get just enough story to finnish in a night, but it still leaves you wanting part two. Plus these parts come out fast enough that there is little to no wait between parts.

Kellan is a Dragon King who has been asleep for centuries when he is awaken by intruders in his cave. These inturders are a covert MI5 team, but little does Denae know, that she is to be bait for the dragon. After a scuffle, Denae is hurt and taken to dragon headquarters where she is healed and told the secret of the dragons. Still fearing for her life, because afterall if the dragons dont kill her, MI5 will, she has to pick who to trust, and how to survive.

Sexual tention abounds, but no action. Yet. I can wait.

Darkest Flame, Part One is the first in a series of 4 installment which will then be released into a book. If the author is new, I think this form of publishing is great. You can sample the author for a small cost. If you are already a fan of the author, I would suggest waiting for the entire book.

This first installment really sets the stage for the relationship between Denae and Kellan. How they meet and their pasts are explored. From the first paragraph, there is action and intrigue, setting up the bigger mystery of the villain and what is he after - revenge or something else?

I thought as I read the saying “You really can’t eat just one,” holds true for this story. I think it would be about impossible not to want to read the entire set of the installments. At least for me, this story really hooked me and made me hungry for the next part.

Can I give it a 10?
Couldn't wait to get this as an ARC. Now I'm mad because I finished it too soon.

You really need to get this as soon as it is available.
I was so excited to get it and so upset when I finished it.
I honestly wouldn't have loved it in parts 1, 2, 3, 4 unless they were all released together. I dont like books that are "part" of a story. While this is the 4th in the series the excitement of what is coming next isn't diminished.
You get closure in the story but its still open for the next book because it isn't done. You don't feel bad because the story is to continue. Your waiting for the next "chapter" in the form of another complete book.
I liken it to a really good TV series. Each book is a "Season" and they all are complete stories but end in a cliff hanger.

I want the next one please.
But because I cant have it I will just have to go back and read them again!

Scotland and Dragons! A winning combination!

This was a FABULOUS read with sexy, macho DRAGONS and FAE. It's loaded with espionage and sizzling, awesomely hot romance!

The Darkest Flame was originally published as a four-part serialized story. The 1st three parts leave the reader with major cliffhangers. I am NOT a fan of serialized books and I avoid cliffhangers if I can. Fortunately, The Darkest Flame is now available all together - that's the way I read it - and I inhaled the book all in one day! I absolutely could not put it down once I started it. My review is for the whole book.

I found this book boring. I was excited to try a story with dragons and started the read with great anticipation. Unfortunately the introduction of the fae was a huge turnoff. People who like the fae may find this book engaging. It was also, for lack of a better word, choppy. Too many back stories were referred to out distracted from what was going on in this book. Sorry to say I will not be continuing this series. On a positive note, the author does write well. However, if you are reading her fir the first time I would recommend starting with her first series as this is a spin off of a spin off.

So I love Dragons, I love shifter series. Haven't read anything by Donna Grant. But I'm glad I picked this up.

Kellan has been asleep in his cave for quite a long time. His hatred for humans has made the other kings just leave him sleep. Now he's been awaken by trespassers in his cave.

Denae has been working hard to get where she is in MI5 although she's originally from America. She and her partner are sent to Draegon to find something, but what exactly she doesn't know.

This is good so far and I can't wait to get into the second part.

Good read, but I was a little confused about some of the characters. I'm not sure if there is another book before this one that I missed or if another series intertwines with this one. Check the author's website because the books need to be read in order. Great love story and overall continuation of about the Dragon Kings saga.

By far the best book in the Dark Kings Series. Donna Grant is an amazing writer. It was great to have such a strong leading woman as Denae. Also, Kellan is an amazing male. I enjoy the history, romance and paranormal in these books.

Lots of steamy scenes.

I also love the cover.

Wasn't bad. I think I would have preferred it as a whole novel rather than a series of novellas that continue on. Other than this is was well written with a flowing theme and writing style.

Excellent intro into the world of the Dragon kings. Couldn't wait until I could read the next in this series.
