Today millions of people all around the world frequently overwork themselves to the point of physical and emotional exhaustion. The dark circles underneath our eyes, incessant scrolling, and the constant malaise we feel are now impossible to ignore. But why does burnout really happen, and how can we prevent it?
A Call to Wake Up is my unfiltered account of hitting rock bottom and clawing my way back. The crushing weight of startup stress pushed me to ignore my body and soul, pushing me beyond my limits. I unravel the layers of my own burnout that left me floored and unable to work for weeks…and why it happened more than once.
I will share what personally worked and what didn’t for me along my journey. I’ve tried dozens of different techniques that helped me heal, from traditional talk therapy to mind-body healing, yoga to psychedelics, silent meditation to singing bowls. I’ve spoken to dozens of people who have recovered from burnout, along with psychologists and doctors who share their views on treatment, recovery, and beyond.
I challenge common advice, revealing why 'stress-busting hacks' barely scratch the surface. Burnout is more than exhaustion; it's a soul-searching expedition that touches our deepest beliefs. Whether you think you’re on the way to burnout or are already there, you’ll find everything from recovery strategies to making sure that it doesn’t happen again.

(shortness of breath, heart palpitations, headaches, fatigue, etc.)Do you feel there are areas where you’re neglecting your needs, such as friends, family, hobbies, creativity, health, travel, etc.?Do you have difficulty expressing your emotions openly and honestly to yourself and others? ( you want to share how you feel, but you don’t! Quote from the
"We can’t just relax ourselves out of burnout. We need to find a more holistic approach that recognizes burnout as mental, physical, and highly personalized. That means we need to unearth both the personal and societal reasons burnout is happening. It requires us to look beyond the stress-relief model and address the root causes of why we’re stressed.
Great overview on burnout and advice on how to deal with it
Misha did an excellent job of explaining what burnout is and how to deal with it in this book. He referenced data from researchers and experts while also sharing his own experience burning out while building a startup during the pandemic. The book goes into more detail about burnout avoidance and recovery strategies than I had anticipated including an interesting section on meditation that I really enjoyed. Whether you’ve already experienced the effects of burnout or want to make sure to avoid succumbing to it in the future, I would strongly recommend reading this book!
