Hard-Headed Texan

HEAVEN IN TEXAS?

Okay, maybe Antonia Campbell hadn't exactly found heaven in Angel Eye, Texas. But even if she did get mysterious midnight phone calls and her only bed warmer was a cat named Mitzi, her life as a country vet was a lot better than what she'd left behind: a stifling Virginia upbringing and an abusive ex-husband.

Then a call to Daniel Sutton's ranch changed everything. Sparks flew the minute they met, and in his arms she felt petite, protected, and every inch a woman. But Daniel's heart might not be as free as it first seemed, and her mysterious caller appeared to have ideas of his own for her future. Was everything about to fall apart just when heaven had seemed within reach?

If I had to decribe this book I would call it dull, I mean there was nothing wrong with it but it wasn't terribly interesting. I really didn't find the hero or heroine interesting.

The heroine comes from a wealthy family but her height made her feel awkward & she got married to an abusive douche and it took her a while to leave him but she made a clean break, followed her dream to go to a vet school & now is part owner in a practice in a small town.

She meets the hero on a call, he runs a horse ranch and is a divorcee with a eighteen year old kid & a big family. He's a stoic kind of person & they start dating, she has no intention of letting it get serious or getting married & anyways the town gossip says that the hero still has a thing for his ex-wife who left him & his son when he was three.

I found the romance quite tepid & I was especially annoyed by the heroine's reaction at the end when the hero helped her out & she went all, I need to take care of myself and all that.

On to the brother Quinn's book.

This is my first read from Ms. Camp and I really enjoyed it. I feel in love with Daniel right off, and I could easily relate to Antonia's situation. There's great chemistry, some intrigue, some charming fun moments and a sigh worthy ending. Up next is Daniel's brother Quinn's story!

I wouldn't exactly describe this book as exciting or anything, it was rather monotonous and predictable.

Right off the bat, I liked Daniel. He didn't seem arrogant, stiff or annoying. He was quite charming to a point caring and every bit a perfect hero. Although it's implied that he was still in love with ex-wife, it was pretty clear that he was head over heels in love with Antonia.

Antonia, I was sympathetic to her situation and could understand her fear and PTSD, but she was irritating near the end with the whole 'I can take care of myself' rant and punishing Daniel for helping her out.

Overall it was an OK book and now onto Quinn's book.

What I liked about this book: It was a quick read and I liked the main characters. I felt the author sensitively handle the issues of domestic abuse. Although for the main, the abuse went back 4 years before it still affected Antonia's life in multiple ways including her ability to trust in the possibilty of a new relationship.
What I didn't like in the book: I was horrified at Antonia's mothers attitude. With a mother like that who needs enemies? Secondly, more time than I felt was needed was spent on sexual interactions.
