Priscilla and Tux: Brothers are Caring is about a small parrot who is faced with the challenge of finding the perfect token to bring to class for show and tell. Even though the challenge of finding just the right token may seem easy, it winds up causing Priscilla to think about many issues within her past and throughout her journeys and adventures. Priscilla becomes so caught up in this mission of deciding what to take for show and tell that she dismisses her own treasured items as not being good enough when comparing them to those of her classmates.
Thankfully, Priscilla has a wonderful older brother, Tux, who walks her to school and entertains her friends with an assortment of jokes. As Priscilla's friends become enchanted with her brother and his jokes, Priscilla seems to forget about how emotionally distraught she has become while comparing herself and her personal belongings to her classmates. throughout the story, the reader learns that Priscilla and Tux are actually a blended family and how the smallest differences do not detract from our importance but strengthen us and bring joy to our personal lives in ways which we might not recognize until pointed out to us.
Victoria Smith, the author of Priscilla and Tux, is a former teacher who now volunteers her time at a animal shelter. The illustrator, a gifted illustrator who has spent more than 16 years in graphic design is originally from Ukraine and shares how war has affected the people who still live there. One can only imagine the path they have embarked on to create and publish this children's book to bring hope to the children in Ukraine and help the rest of the world see how differences in personality can bridge gaps in culture and unite people for a higher and more common purpose such as bringing joy and peace to remainder of the world.
True, the text can be inconsistent within the pages of this children's book as we more advanced authors and readers study these tiny nuances. However, I can only imagine children clinging to and holding onto these lines of narrative as they worry about their future, hope for higher meaning, and yearn for more love and peace in the world.
Essentially, this is a book that celebrates differences and challenges. Families come in all sizes and forms and sometimes siblings are adopted into families instead of being born into them. This is what makes family so lovely and amazing because there is enough love for everyone.
The share-and-tell assignment idea of PRISCILLA AND TUX is excellent - it is executed in a way to keep young readers on their toes until the end of the story. The amount of text is a good fit for young readers' short span of attention. The visuals help to bring the story to life - they are very colourful and increase the comprehension of the narrative.
The author introduced us to children from different ethnicities and races which is good. True, sometimes what you are looking for is right under your nose. Under my nose was something that bothered me: Priscilla and Tux are not only siblings - they are the only birds among many boys and girls in Miss Savino's class.
Are the two birds a good fit for the class is up to the reader to decide. For sure it may encourage children to ask questions and share observations...
I can totally relate to the dilemma of the main character, Priscilla, as she struggles to find something to bring to her class's show-and-tell. I think every student has been in a similar situation, especially on the first day of school when the teacher asks us to share something interesting about ourselves. The story is fun, and the show-and-tell presentations by Priscilla's classmates are really interesting. One thing I wish the story had mentioned is that while it's great to be unique, it's also important not to stress too much about being different from everyone else. Sometimes, it's okay to choose something that someone else has. After all, we all have different experiences with the same things, people, or places. Still, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a sibling-themed story or to students of all ages.
Sometimes what you’re looking for is right under your nose. Priscilla is running out of time on her quest to find something special to bring to class for show and tell. All of the other kids in her class have such interesting things to share and she fears that she will come up short. This story line provides a wonderful opportunity to show aspects from other cultures, and to hear a few good jokes along the way. Ultimately highlighting the importance of family and appreciation for those who are so close to us they can sometimes be overlooked. A sweetly captivating story.
Priscilla and Tux is a lovely reminder that sometimes the most special stories are the ones right in front of us. With a map of Chile and a whole lot of heart, Priscilla turns “show and tell” into something truly unforgettable. The book gently touches on identity, adoption, and being different—in all the best ways. And yes, Priscilla and Tux might be the only birds in class, but that just makes them even more fun to follow. A warm, thoughtful read with a dash of humor—perfect for curious kids (and grown-ups, too)
Priscilla the character once again shines in this book. We loved how the author portrays situations that all kids face. It teaches about the importance of family and being proud of who you are. The book has great illustrations and the story has a happy ending. Love those who are most important to u and cherish your relations. A great book to discuss with all kids.

This is the third of the Tux books we have enjoyed. What a lovely addition to our book collection. This sweet little story of the bond between siblings is so heartwarming and inspiring. As the share and tell days approach, little Pricilla does not know what to do. All the other children have amazing items to share with the class. What will she bring when it is her turn? A dilemma many children face in school and beyond. Wait until you see what she chooses!
Great story. It sometimes takes us a while to notice that all we need is right in front of us. Priscilla’s eyes were opened to this when she struggled to find an answer to her assignment. Illustrations are perfect. I highly recommend this for your reading pleasure.
This is an excellent book written by Victoria Smith a retired school teacher. Love the topic, the storyline, and the illustrations. Priscilla has an adopted brother named Tux. She knows he is great and she loves him, but on show and tell day she can't find anything that the class would enjoy until she found it. Right under her nose.
Children will enjoy Priscilla and Tux. Priscilla wants to to share something special to her class. Her family is so supportive of her and one day she realized what is special to her that she can share. I enjoyed reading this book. It has jokes and it is encouraging, positive, and fun. I am interested to read the other books by this author.
The story was difficult to follow for me. I think it's to do with the alignment of text - some pages have long paragraphs centre-aligned, some pages it's left-aligned. Maybe it's the protagonist being a parrot with a penguin for a brother going to school with humans? It's just too far from relatable and not much of a fun or exciting read.
Priscilla and Tux is a heartwarming story with a happy ending. This is a great reminder that everyone is special and no one should feel left out. Also, this story will teach young readers the value of relationships in the family, love, and caring for siblings. This book comes with great illustrations as well that will interest young readers.
This story is not only entertaining but also serves as an inspiration and a learning experience, as Priscilla discovers the joy of sharing one of life's most precious gifts: a meaningful relationship. The narrative is sprinkled with jokes guaranteed to bring a smile to every reader's face and is accompanied by charming illustrations. It's a must-read!
"Priscilla and Tux" is a heartwarming book that emphasizes the importance of family bonds. With relatable situations and lovely illustrations, it's a valuable tool for teaching kids essential life lessons. This delightful read ends on a positive note, reminding us to cherish our loved ones.
Very cute story! My oldest daughter remarked that she could relate on a personal level to the characters and for this was very encouraging. I recon it is very good for kids who attend multiracial/diverse schooling. Beautiful illustrations, sweet story!
A sweet story about siblings with a really excellent message. The art is wonderful and kids will love this book. It confused me a bit at first because the main character and her brother are birds and the rest of the kids are human, but if the muppets can do these sorts of things, anyone can!
Priscilla's character continues to sparkle in this book. The author skillfully depicts universal situations that children encounter, imparting valuable lessons about the significance of family and embracing one's identity with pride.
Priscilla and Tux is a heartwarming story with a happy ending. This story will teach young readers the value of family, love, and care for siblings. Also, this is a great reminder that everyone is special. This book also comes with great illustrations that will be of interest to young readers.
A charming book with a heartwarming message about sibling love and connection. The vibrant illustrations bring the story to life beautifully. I recommend this book for family reading and classroom settings.
A perfect reminder to kids AND adults, that sometimes the most important things are right under our noses … to not overlook or fail to appreciate those things or family members that mean so much. A wonderful social-emotional learning book that does an excellent job of showing just how anxious kids can become as deadlines approach.
