Dark Olympus #5

Cruel Seduction

Rate this book
He was my enemy. My lover. My husband.

And the one man I swore by all Olympus I would destroy.

Aphrodite has never flinched at getting her perfectly manicured hands dirty, and she's not about to start now—even if that means marrying Olympus's enemy number one, the new Hephaestus. She has a wicked plan to keep her deadly new husband off-balance, seducing the one person he seems to care about most in this world: Pandora, a woman as beautiful as she is sweet.

Two can play the seduction game, however, and Hephaestus is all too happy to put his new wife in her place. Her ex, Adonis, seems like he'll do the trick. It doesn't hurt that he's gorgeous in the way of fallen angels, either.

The only problem with using seduction as a weapon? Hearts are all too quick to get involved. With Hephaestus and Aphrodite trading venomous strikes that feel a whole lot like foreplay, lines become blurred and emotions entangled. But a broken heart may be the least of their worries. With unrest in Olympus reaching new heights, these bedroom games may have deadly consequences for themselves, their city, and everyone they've come to love.

CRUEL SEDUCTION is my favorite Dark Olympus installment to date!

Dark Olympus is book number 5 and is a polyamorous installment in the series with Hephaestus, Aphrodite, Adonis, and Pandora. Romance with erotica elements. Can be read as a stand-alone but better as part of the series. This book was MESSY and political and very very spicy and I ate it up! OMG!!!! Katee Robert did it again! I love this book and series!!!

Retelling mythology.
The audiobook is perfection.

I don't want to rag on this one, because I have enjoyed this series thus far. I like the politics and I think this world is fascinating. However, I also am going to be honest when I say that there were too many people/names and roles in this one. I trust Katee Robert to write good poly-amorous relationships, in fact, she's one of the first authors who introduced me to it.. but these four were not developed enough for me to believe that they could be in this very complex relationship.

There is just too much going on at this point and with four POVs and so many relationships to introduce and develop... I feel like we need 500 pages or more to do that. Not that she should write a book that long, but that's what I needed to get there with these four.

I ended the book feeling like... that's it? Maybe I have been anticipating this Open Poly Knot for years now at this point... but there we are.

I am in this series til the end though.. here's to hoping I can be more engaged with the next entry. I still find this world very immersive and well created. I just expected more from this romance.

Thank you Dreamscape Media for providing me with an ALC in exchange for my honest thoughts.

CRUEL SEDUCTION is my favorite Dark Olympus installment to date! This book was MESSY and political and very very spicy and I ate it up! Katee Robert's writing is so addictive and she always makes me fall for her characters. Even the ones who are terrible human beings. Olympus is in turmoil which means I can't wait to see what Katee conjures up next in MIDNIGHT RUIN.

As always, Zara Hampton-Brown and AlexMoorcock bring these characters to life with their performances. I am eagerly awaiting the next book. January cannot come fast enough!

This was a steamy, delicious experience. I love Katee Roberts and damn can she right good smut! This was probably my favorite Dark Olympus to date. I loved all of the characters and how their unique relationships came to be.

Hephestus's character growth was amazing, brought on by deep feelings he's never had the opportunity to have. The storyline itself is getting juicy. I am wondering when the war/downfall will happen. I feel it brewing. And what will it mean for everyone when it's over?

The diversity in this series is top-notch. I think it would be hard to read and feel bad about yourself! The body positivity and free sexuality really make it for me.

The dynamics in poly relationships can be so different than what we usually see so it is fun to deep dive into this one and watch it form uniquely on its own. It was a totally different experience than Wicked Beauty!

If you like good smut and eat up love stories I recommend this series. It doesn't deep dive into mythology, it is more there as a political system.

It can sound confusing, but once you start reading it all makes a bit more sense.

Cruel Seduction by Katee Robert
Dark Olympus series #5. Retelling mythology. Romance with erotica elements. Can be read as a stand-alone but better as part of the series.
Aphrodite is forced to marry the new Hephaestus for political reasons, and the 13. She plans leverage by seducing Pandora, the only person he seems to care about. He retaliates by seducing Adonis, her ex-lover. Lines blur and emotions get entangled. But Olympus is far from stable and enemies may be closer than they realize.

🎧 I listened to an audiobook version of this book, narrated by Alex Moorcock and Zara Hampton-Brown. These two have done the full series to-date alternating chapters by POV between Aphrodite and Hephaestus, female and male. The two narrative voices complement each other in tonal quality, timing and inflection. Passion is clearly portrayed as is hate and worry. I enjoyed this at a speed of 1.5 for the best conversational comfort. And I admit I turned the sound down a few times for privacy. Don’t want the mail carrier or FedEx delivery person tripping down the stairs. 🤣

This episode of the series does little to advance the series arc. It’s panting melting romance erotica throughout the entire book. Steamy hot over and over again. Some political barbs and rearranging but love seems to be a higher motivation these days.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley and publisher Dreamscape Media.

Thank you to Sourcebooks and Edelweiss for my ARC in exchange for an honest review

CW: attempted murder, murder, violence, blood, child abuse (historical, non-graphic), attempted sexual assault (historical, off-page), orphan

The fifth book in the series it could be enjoyed as a standalone but I think it would be appreciated more reading the books prior

I would recommend if you're looking for (SPOILERS)

-MMFF open poly knot
-marriage of convenience
-second chance
-revenge
-hurt/comfort
-plus size rep

I would trust very few authors to introduce four characters, an open poly knot, and add in all of the drama with the Olympus, and of course Katee Robert excelled at it. At this point we know this world so well. It was so lovely (and of course sexy) to go back to Hades club.

There were so many dynamic relationships in this book. Aphrodite and Hephaestus and their marriage of convenience, and their clear sexual attraction despite being enemies. Every time he called her wife had me screaming. Adonis hurt, and trying to fight his attraction to Hephaestus. And Pandora's adorable friendship with Hephaestus and amazing chemistry with Aphrodite. The revenge sex, the hurt/comfort, how soft Hephaestus and even Aphrodite got.

The stakes in this book just keep ramping up as Olympus is poised to to combust with all of the political tensions. I loved how this showed so many different glimpses of love, new love, past love and figuring things out, friendship, family.

I adore this series and just can't wait for the next book (and also to of course reread via audio!)

I absolutely couldn’t put this book down for a minute! This book had me so enthralled with the characters and the political entanglement/ implications. OMG!!!! Katee Robert did it again! I love this book and series!!! I really like how she develops more of the characteristics of each person in the book. At first I was like Aphrodite is a b**ch! At the end I really like her as a person Because I find out more about her. The political intrigue in this book puts me on the edge of my seat. I want to know what happens next… I have soo many questions?… The sex in this book is chefs kiss! This is a polyamorous romance. I would totally recommend this book to everybody! !!!! I want to thank NetGalley, Sourcebooks, and Katee Robert for giving me the opportunity to read this arc for an honest opinion.

At this point I’m just reading these books to get the series over with. Honestly the plot is really losing me on these bc sometimes all you really want in these books is a bunch of smutty gods being smutty. I liked this series better when they were just stand alone and weren’t trying to have all this conflict going on. Now that the author is trying to tie all these books together, I’m just bored.

I hate Goodreads. I was typing up my review and nearly done and the app automatically closed to refresh and I lost everything I have been typing up. So frustrated. Have to remember to type up in my notes app.

Good audiobook. I like that there were two narrators. The cool thing was that the female do laugh when the part of the story called for laughter. Her voice sounds nice. This book is thick and the audiobook was more than 11 hours but I flew through. The story didn't feel lengthy.

This is my first super spicy audiobook. I haven't read or listen to explicit MM relationship before. It feels like love at first sight for two different characters and enemies to lover trope for the others. This is book 5 and I haven't read the previous four books so I'm just assuming the others are love at first sight but they might've met before. I saw a lot of rave for this author on instagram and I have this book so I just jumped in. Will have to catch up from the beginning later.

This story followed Aphrodite. She broke her heart and her boyfriend's heart to marry herself to an enemy who recently obtained the title of one of the Thirteen. Little did she know, she started out being in control of everything but her path took her to an ending she didn't see coming. The second view was Theseus. He hated a lot and he has many reasons to hate. Good thing love found him when he's not expecting. The third view was Pandora. She wanted to protect her best friend Theseus but she couldn't help who she fell for when the person she tried to resist was his wife. The fourth view was Adonis. Adonis sounds like a nice person. I want to read the previous books to get to know him better.

Besides love, there's the attempted murder on their lives to keep them alert.

Thank you Sourcebooks Casablanca for the opportunity to read and review. Thank you Libro.fm for the complimentary audiobook.

When we visit Dark Olympus, we have two expectations: really hot sex scenes and a few light references to Greek mythology. This book? We get some weird combination of six figures of Greek mythology (Theseus-Hephaestus-Eris-Aphrodite-Adonis-Pandora) over four characters in the book, a lot of discrete sex scenes, and a ton of "politics." Look, we understand the Aphrodite/Hephaestus pairing, but how do the others get thrown into a relationship? Also, we just don't care about politics in New Olympus or whatever it's supposed to be. We know the original myths and they're way more interesting than whatever we got here.

Basically this one was a letdown :'( ...Here's hoping that MMF Orpheus/Charon/Eurydice can pull this train back on track in a few months.

50-Word Summaries:

Laine: Writing a compelling love story between 4 people who all need to bond with each other would take A LOT of character development to do convincingly, but instead most of the plot focuses on Olympian politics. At least two pairings within the foursome had history? OUCH, with the two dicks.

Meg: I don’t read Dark Olympus for the politics; I read it to watch avatars of the Greek myths getting it on. Cruel Seduction manages to take a relationship knot of four people and bog it down in fake politics. IOW: I was expecting a sexfest and got a snoozefest instead.

This objective review is based on a complimentary copy of the novel.

Purchased almost two years ago I was finally ready to return to this series with absolutely no idea what I’m in for with four people entangled. I’ll be honest, I was here for Aphrodite and Hephaestus first and foremost and I wished more authors would pick up their love story and give it a romantic twist.

“You’re my wife, Eris. I haven’t wanted to strangle you in nearly a week. That’s love, don’t you think?”

LOL. Anyhow. I’m not sure if it’s bc I’m an avid MM romance reader but I enjoyed watching Theseus (Hephaestus) and Adonis together the most.

“This won’t end in anything but heartbreak for both of us.”
“Do you care?”
“I should.” […] “My heart is already shattered. Another blow might be the end of me.”

“You want me to fuck you like I love you.”

“This might not be true any other time, but tonight you’re safe with me.”

I wasn’t sure how all of their dynamic would pan out but if you ask me, Pandora would’ve been the love interest I could’ve done without leaving this a solid MMF Katee Robert writes so well. Although I appreciate the attempt at bringing a fresh dynamic to the usual.

Overall, while it had some pretty good scenes, it didn’t quite hit as good as previous books by KR did.

Wheww!! I knew this one was going to be messy and it was. But also very hot, with character dynamics that really work and a fascinating progression in the macroplot.

Cruel Seduction is a polyamorous installment in the series with Hephaestus, Aphrodite, Adonis, and Pandora. Aphrodite marries the new Hephaestus for political reasons, but she and her ex Adonis aren't really over each other. And Adonis is kind of into her new husband. Oh and Aphrodite and Pandora kind of have a thing even though Pandora is Hephaestus' best friend. Yep, messy for sure but I was into it and I think Katee really makes it work. Also this is the first one that feels more like how actual polyamorous relationships seem to work, albeit with less politics and murder. This one is very high on the sex content, perhaps unsurprisingly given all the relationships, more so than other books in the series. But I think we also get solid character and relationship development and some INTERESTING things happen in the macroplot that make me anxious for the next book! The audio narration is okay, but not my favorite. I don't feel like the voices of the women are distinct enough which you need in a 4-pov novel. Otherwise I really enjoyed this. I received an audio review copy of this book via NetGalley, all opinions are my own.

Okay this was pretty average, probably my least favourite from the series so far, but it wasn’t bad

It was very insta lust, and the four of them (Hephaestus, Aphrodite, Adonis & Pandora) literally just trauma bonded within about 3 chapters. There was no development really in their relationships, one minute they’re all enemies the next minute they’re not.
That being said, the dedication does say this gets messy, and it definitely was quite a messy (therefore juicy & fun) love triangle, or should I say love square? 😅😂

This has MM/FF/MMF the lot, and as always the spice in this series is prettyyyy juicyyyy to read

I love where the main storyline is going though, this is my comfort easy reading series that I have a lot of fun with, and this book was still fun. It just wasn’t well developed, the romance plot was pretty lacking so I wasn’t gripped BUT I really loved Adonis and Pandora as characters🥹

This one wasn't great for me. We have the FMC1, Aphrodite (that's her title, her actual name is Eris) who is absolutely hell bent on "protecting her city" and "doing whatever it takes to protect her city" which leads her to marry MMC1, Hephaestus (also his title, his real name is Theseus) because he works for a bad guy who is working for another unknown badder guy to take down Olympus. Sigh.

So, Eris/Aphrodite *HATES* Theseus/Hephaestus, and vice versa. So they marry. And they have hate sex. But it's real good sex. So that's confusing for them.

(FMC1) Eris/Aphrodite is going to hit (MMC1) Theseus/Hephaestus where it'll really hurt, through seducing his best friend (FMC2) Pandora, who is a little hottie, *BUT* (MMC1) Theseus/Hephaestus doesn't like her in a sexual way, he likes her in a best friends and needs to protect her kind of way. So (MMC) 1he does NOT want to have sex with his super hottie bestie (FMC2) Pandora.

And then, when (FMC1) Eris/Aphrodite, dares to upset her new hubs (MMC1) Theseus/Hephaestus he ends up seeing out an opportunity to work with her ex-lover who was the big love of her life that she had to sacrifice for the good of her people, in order to marry him... So now we also have super hottie (MMC2) Adonis in the mix.

Threats to their lives abound. But what's really going on is insta-love born from insta-lust. I'm all for insta-lust turning to love, but with the HUGE distance to go from the big-hate to love these characters had to navigate in a few days, was a step too far for me.

I love that Katee Robert is doing their thing. But I want more actual story, less repetitive internal musing over the same thing relentlessly. Which would give more page space/word count to character development and plot! Ugh. This story take place over like 4-5 days...

This is the story:

SPOILERS (SORT OF) AHEAD...

FMC1 has to marry MMC1, and break the heart of MMC2 who she actually loves, because she must do what is right for her city. MMC1 *hates* FMC1, because she's one of the 13, and her sister hurt his knee in the tournament in the previous book, but marries FMC1 as part of the plan of his foster father/man he admires and looks up to/bad guy wants him to as part of his master plan to f*ck up Olympus. That man, foster dad/bad guy, threw a house party before the start of this book where the MMC1 killed the previous person with the title, and now MMC1 is a part of the ruling 13. The bad peeps also leak to the citizens of Olympus, that there's a clause that anyone who kills one of the 13 can take their place.

So the city is full of murderous citizens. FMC1 and the other 13 resent the hell out of that. Obvi. Now there's a target on all their backs. The city is destabilizing. Sooo, to get under MMC1's skin, FMC1 seduces his very best friend, FMC2... who btw grew up in the orphanage and they had hard times together and are the highest of as best friends -- but when FMC1 tries to seduce her, despite their YEARS OF BESTIENESS, FMC2 tires but cannnnnnot resist her charms and fails miserably. MMC1 isn't doing so great in the press, (that's a thing in this series) and MMC2 is mad at FMC1 for being a jerk, so MMC2 decides to help MMC1, with his image in the press, and in the process, their attraction is undeniable and they end up in bed together.

There's an assassination attempt on FMC1, and MMC1, who hates her, *SAVES HER*... on instinct. Soooo maybe he doesn't really hate her? Hmmm. She's real shaken up by that and MMC1 wants to help her shake out of her despondent state, so calls FMC2, who says to call MMC2 and they *sex* her back to herself again. Phew. More bickering. More longing from each of them to want to all be together. The bad guy is up to bad guy stuff.

MMC1 is having mixed feels about his part in the nefarious plot since FMC1 is in danger... Because he might have caught some feels. (Where did he catch them? How did he catch them?) Then there's another assassination attempt while all 4 of them are together and FMC1 is stabbed while trying to save MMC1's life... this puts shit into perspective for MMC1, he is UPSET she might be dying, so he marches down to foster dad/bad guy house and says, no more thanks I'm out. MMC1 resigns from his title job (as Hephaestus) so he can be with FMC1, and MMC2, and FMC2... and then FMC1, who barely lives through the stabbing, also resigns from her title job (as Aphrodite). And they are all in love and they are going to make this poly thing work.

It was all just too fast for the relationships and the plot that was supposed to be driving the story was very thin/non existent. Would like to have spent more time with the character development and less time on the circular endless same place musings.

Goodness me, I felt like this book was way more tense than the other books in the series but just as good.

This fun little love square between Eris (Aphrodite), Theseus (Hephaestus), Pandora, and Adonis was really nice to see play out positively in the end, even if it came with a near-death experience for Eris.

I truly don’t know how the Thirteen of Olympus just go about their lives like modern celebrities and constantly have people tailing them and trying to kill them for a spot in the Thirteen… Like, that’s wild.

This whole series is just so good and the sexual tension is just… so yummy, I can’t. Katee Robert is so good at writing burning sexual tension. UGH.

Such a good book! Can’t wait to read Midnight Ruin when it comes out!

"I'll do anything to keep this city safe. Even this. Especially this. I was made for this."

I will do anything to keep this city safe. And I mean it.
Even if I have to marry him.
Even if I have to let Adonis go.
I have to do this.
It's not about me. It's about Olympus.

"All's fair in love and war."

Cruel Seduction is the 5th book in the Dark Olympus series and honestly it popped off no joke.

It's really hard to introduce 4 characters (technically new) and have me immediately care about all of them.
But goddamn Katee Robert I tip my hat to you.

If someone asks me what I want to be when I grow up, I legit will just say Aphrodite from Cruel Seduction.
She owns a room. She is that bitch and she knows it. And she is sneaky sneaky sneaky.
And a badass if I did not mention that before.

"It's really cute that you think you scare me."

Also, she is me and she proved that with this one line that literally encompasses me as a human being:

"Dark humor has kept me going through some nightmarish experiences, and it will continue to do so."

The relationship between them all was MESSY but that is just what Katee Robert promised and she delivered so no complaints.

But this book was a perfect Hate to Love for me. So many good quips, so much tension. Love. Love. Love.

"From the moment I saw her, I've hated her and wanted her in equal measure"

"He looks at me as if he's like to toss me out the nearest window. The feeling is entirely mutual."

"This woman has wanted for nothing, and every second in her presence is an itch I can't scratch, one designed to drive me mad"

And I had to mention this, that the moment Hephaestus said "I'm not here to make friends" I was like OK Sam Smith calm down.

You also have Adonis, who Aphrodite broke up with for the good of Olympus who is torn because his heart is broken but he still loves Aphrodite. And he also has his eyes on someone else.

And Pandora, who just wants to protect Hephaestus. But gets caught up in everything for better or for worse.

"We never had a chance to be anything but monsters."

And it would not be a Katee Robert book without some spice, so for your enjoyment some out of context quotes:

"You're so wet. Is that just for me?"

"Spread your fucking legs, Wife"

"You really are a good boy, aren't you? Got yourself all ready for me."

"That's right, Wife. Come on your husband's cock."

"Be a good boy and take it."

"Take off your clothes, Wife. Tonight, the only fight is seeing who can make you come the most."

And I have to end with my favorite quote

"That's just it, Husband. I'm the only one who gets to kill you. I'll bury anyone else who tries."

Tropes:

🪶MMFF open poly relationship
🪶Mythology Retelling
🪶Enemies-to-Lovers

This book is M E S S Y. At one point, Pandora says something like "Welcome to Polyamory!" like any of these characters actually had had a conversation clarifying that's what they were doing and not just revenge fucking their exes/new spouse/step siblings and putting aside all their feelings to deal with later.

I didn't exactly hate this. I've long ago accepted that I won't understand the rules of this Olympus city with it's magical (?) barriers and oh so influential and important gossip rags. I still definitely don't get why we should be rooting for this ruling class of Olympus to maintain their power. Nobody seems to like it and it doesn't seem to work in the best interest of the regular people that often. And now they're getting shot at! Like, just abolish the monarchy already, y'all. But even though I don't understand it, it's fine because there at least is a clear bad guy (Minos/Minotaur who I kept forgetting are different people) to root against and that's all I needed out of the plot anyway.

I think almost all of my favorite KR books are throuples or more because focusing on character connections and interpersonal conflicts is her strength as a writer, rather than anything to do with the mess that is the overarching plot of Olympus. So when there's more characters to focus on, it feels like the book has more to work with. I do think 4 people is probably the max though. The side characters Adonis and definitely with Pandora felt really isolated and underdeveloped compared to Eris and Theseus. And while I loved the popcorn chewing drama their involvement in this story caused, I feel like we hardly got to know them outside of their infatuation/love with Eris and/or Theseus.

I love that Katee Robert is using her characters to represent the different types of relationships. Each iteration has a different type of coupling with different sexual appetites.

However, this one never sold me on the romance. The only romance that had any sort of emotion behind it was Pandora and Aphrodite. This was also a huge missed opportunity to bring in the "opening of Pandora's box, " which I kept waiting for, haha.

The Dark Olympus series is fantastic because it also is just good story-telling. With this novel, there is lackluster romance and not much content to add to the overall series. This could have taken place outside of the series without much loss.

There were some spicy scenes, of course, but the main couple had almost zero chemistry, finding it instead in outside sources.

This one is on my DNF list.
To be honest, I have enjoyed reading books in the series so far, and was interested to read about Aphrodite and Hephaestus.

Very very disappointed with everything that I have read. First of all, there is no plot here, I really couldn’t see the point of this story. This book consists mostly of some sex scenes, but even that is very chaotic. We have male/male, female/female, male/female scenes, and in the end there is a relationship between four different people.
It was just too much for me, the dynamic of this relationship was confusing and without any understandable emotional progress.

I am sorry to say that in the end, this book was lacking too much for my liking (plot, character development, chemistry).

A marriage of convenience with a twist.
The narrative weaves a polyamorous dynamic involving Aphrodite, Hephaestus, Pandora, and Adonis, presenting multifaceted connections that are both spicy and emotionally resonant. The characters are well-crafted, each bringing their own messiness and vulnerabilities to the story, which only enhances their interactions and growth.
With high stakes, political intrigue, and a storm brewing in Olympus, "Cruel Seduction" is a seductive and very entertaining read.

i was . . . disappointed by the ending of this

by the end of the book i was just kind of feeling let down

the book was teased as a poly group with all four of them. but instead it was adonis x aphrodite x hephaestus, and aphrodite x pandora. the four of them never had a steamy scene together (which is what i was expecting and lowkey how the book was teased, ESPECIALLY with that art in the front of my copy of the book) and they never did

there was a 10 page scene with theseus x adonis, a near 20 page threesome scene, and a whole TWO AND A HALF PAGES OF A F/F SCENE. i just . . . was expecting more??? it just felt very lackluster and anti-climactic for the M/M and F/F scenes.

other things i don't want go into detail for:
- pandora was really boring
- the constant going back and forth between their old names and new titles was mildly confusing
- adonis was sweet but like . . . felt out of place
- i wanted more of the MM & FF scenes (especially since it takes SO LONG for aphrodite and pandora to do ANYTHING)
- the ending was so abrupt there was no resolution or lead up to book 6
- i'm really curious about the minos storyline and what's going on there

am i gonna keep reading? obviously. i'm invested and i do quite enjoy these books. this was the only one that kind of left me feeling like "meh" aftewards

Firstly I cannot put into words how addictive the Dark Olympus series is and how invested I am in all the characters. Each new instalment just gets better and better and Katee Robert's writing is so easy to consume and enjoy.

As always Katee Robert writes great complex relationships and this book was no exception. To describe these characters as messy would be an understatement to say the least. The spice was great, the plot was interesting and set up the next instalment's foundations nicely. My only criticism without spoiling anything was I felt the ending was a bit sudden, I wanted more.

This book contains great spice, tropes including enemies to lovers, forced marriage, second chance romance and many more as well as a well developed and portrayed polyamorous relationship.

I would always recommend reading these books in order of publication although they are standalone due to the plot developments and because the titles and names can be confusing if you are not following correctly!

5 stars.

This was an enjoyable read! I am very much somehow more interested in the actual over arching plot than all the relationships between the characters!
