Haven Ever After #2

Tangling With Trolls

Rate this book
WREN
A month ago, I had no idea that monsters lived in hidden towns. Surprise! The tiny New-England town of Ever is a haven for them. Vampire brothers run the coffee shop. Werewolf bikers will fix your car. I can sort of wrap my mind around that.

But then I meet Ohken Stonesmith, bridge troll and all-around badass. He’s way older than me, crazy confident, and he owns the town’s only flower shop. In short—he’s my ideal man.

The second surprise? I’m a green witch! But when I struggle to use my newly-discovered magic, Ohken offers to teach me, although his methods aren’t exactly conventional. He’s a big fan of teasing me and making me crazy enough to get out of my own head. As our lessons grow more heated, I realize I’m falling for not only this wacky little town, but also the quiet male who’s my biggest cheerleader.

Unfortunately, not all monsters want to live in peace. When evil sneaks past Ever’s protective wards, I want to help. The problem is I keep blowing things up instead of fixing them. I’ve got to get control of my power fast, or Ever—and my budding romance with Ohken—will be in deep trouble.

3.25 - 3.5 stars!

Tangling with Trolls throws us right back into Ever with lovable monsters and the Hector triplets. Wren is the green witch and still learning about her powers and how to use them. What better teacher than the troll daddy himself Ohken?! But Ohken wants more than to just teach her how to harness and control her powers.

"Whenever your mind runs wild like it is now, come to me. I'll quiet it for you. Let me be your refuge, Wren, your safe haven."

Ohken wants Wren's mind, body and soul and he'll do whatever is necessary to woo the pants off her! Unfortunately, danger is still brewing around Ever and the triplets will have to work with Ever to find out what is really going on and how they can stop it.

Tangling With Trolls was incredibly sweet and low angst. It was steamy and an all around fun read. However, it bothered me how many times Wren's weight was mentioned. She's plus sized...I get it. Mentioned one or two times is sufficient. Any more than that, it just becomes repetitive and pulls me out of the story. Otherwise Wren was a super bubbly and enjoyable character. Ohken was intuitive...like almost a little too much lol. It made sense because he kept referring to himself as a Dom and they need to be able to read their partners. But when it came down to it, I didn't really see all that much dominant behavior. It came from Wren more in my opinion.

The story itself was fast moving and flowed nicely and I really like the world that Hazel has built. The first book in this series felt more cohesive than this one but it still tugged at my heart strings and made me fan myself. Overall, a fun and smutty read.

Side note: Am I a little bitter that we aren't getting Morgan and the Keeper's story next? A little. Because Hazel teased the heck out of these two through this whole story that sometimes I found myself waiting for scenes with the two of them rather than Wren and Ohken.

Troll whipped!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 🩵🖤❤️💜
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏🌎
Character development: ☹️☺️😍😄
Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Wren - she is a tall and curvy girl and recently found out she is a green witch (a witch that is good with the natural world, specifically growing things). She is one of three sisters (triplets) who were drawn to the town of Ever. When they arrived, they found out that monsters exist, and the town is one of many Havens where monsters can live and be themselves.

The Hero: Ohken - He is a Troll who lives in Ever. He owns a general store in town as well as a flower shop. He is also on the town council and does some work for a few other people around town. He is eight feet tall, muscular, and dominant. He has wanted Wren since she first came to town.

The Story: Wren has had a crush on Ohken since they first met. The two of them have flirted with each other from the start, but in this story, he finally asks her out and they are inseparable after that. There are some issues though, stemming from the fact that he is a troll and so much larger than her. Wren is curvy and nearly six feet tall herself, but Ohken is about two feet taller than her and muscular to boot and all of him is much larger than a human male. Some magic is needed to make the two of them sexually compatible. Luckily Trolls have the knowledge to brew a certain magical potion that does the trick after they each drink it for a few days.

I am not a fan of the BBW type of book, especially in such steamy stories. Wren is a self-confessed fat person; she is proud of her body and even wears t-shirts that shout it to the world. My problem in this book was that I pictured a fat woman and a tall muscular green man getting it on and I didn’t like those pictures in my head. Maybe that makes me a bad person, but we don’t have chubby Heroes, so why do we need to have chubby heroines? It didn’t help that her curves were mentioned often in this book, and they didn’t always use the word curvy, they flat out said fat more than a few times. Other than that, I did like the story quite a bit and I really like this world of monsters.

This audiobook was in dual points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Mason Lloyd and Mia Barron. I really enjoyed the narration and like both of these narrators. Mason Lloyd has a deep, clear voice and Mia Barron has a soft, feminine voice that is very pleasant as well. This book was steamier than the previous book, which I expected when Ohken was portrayed as such a dominant male.

“Snack up, shack up, Wren.”

No pasa nada.

“Whenever your mind runs wild like it is now, come to me. I’ll quite it for you. Let me be your refuge, Wren, your safe Haven”.

I'm sad to say this one didn't hit nearly as well as Getting It On With Gargoyles did for me! I just really didn't enjoy Ohken very much as a character overall, though I loved Wren and the plot points that weren't revolving around the romance itself. I'm still super excited for the rest of the series and have a pretty strong feeling this will be the exception to the rule for me with these books, or so I hope! 🤞 full review coming soon!

dare i say this is…one of my most favorite monster romances i’ve read???? i think so.
this series is absolutely precious, y’all. all of the cozy comfort of a small town romance with turn-the-volume-all-the-way-down-in-public, toe-curling smut. give me 100000 of them, i beg.

this is book two of an interconnected series – check here for my review of book one!

i can honestly say i’ve never read bridge troll smut before, but we can go ahead and cross that off the bucket list now. and what a ride it was.

ohken is a stoic, daddy dom bridge troll who, yes, literally lives under a bridge, and wren is the earthy, hesitant plant mommy who falls head over heels. it’s romantic. it’s swoony, it’s very plant-y, and there’s a scorching dom/sub dynamic that’s literally the cherry on top of the (troll whip) sundae.

loved it. devoured it. would probably pass on the troll whip, though.

Dnf @ 45%/ 11 chapters

Really kinda hate Ohken and how everyone assumes the witches raised human will just know stuff. And then how shit isn’t actually explained. She’s all “when is my [magic] lesson?” He says she’s already learning she just doesn’t know how. lol NO no she’s not. Y’all have been on dates and talked, but nothing about magic. Actually explain something for once.
She keeps telling him she hates surprises and he keeps trying to make things a surprise or not explaining fully and it’s pissing me off.

Then the troll whip subplot like literally… I knew it was gonna piss me off but him saying he thought people would have told her by now?? My dude! You still had her drink your cum the first time knowing she wouldn’t have known. “Troll cum has healing properties” blah blah blah “I guess this isn’t normal with humans?” No and he would effing know that because with all these excuses he hasn’t said OTHER monster cum has special properties making ingesting cum of others a normal thing— just trolls. Humans don’t know trolls exist so wtf would drinking troll cum be normal for them?

And she needs time to process obviously and he’s like yeah totally let me make you orgasm. Use me. Then after is like do you need MORE time to process? Asshole, she hasn’t processed at all. Stop trying to make her orgasm enough times that she forgives you.

So yeah, fuck Ohken.

The dude was low-key misogynistic. And I guess dominant? He only mentioned it a gazillion times.
I seriously wanted to love it, all my friends did but my curse of being "not like other girls" acted again. 😥

I kept reading because I was teased by a rut and k!nky bedroom but I left unsatisfied. How typical for a dude who keeps beating his chest and claiming what a hero he is.

3.5 stars: Back to the town of Ever and this time it is Wren's turn to learn more about her Earth magic by being assisted by the dashing one and only Throll.
I did like both characters and their story did take time to develop, but I just felt like there were elements that were not my cup of tea. However, there some really tender moments, funny banter between siblings and if course, plenty of romantic vibes.
I am certain that I will read few more from this universe as I really want to see how Morgan navigates all of this new reality.

Wren is an icon 🔥

Unfortunately Ohken not so much imo - he's very into her, yes but her boundaries aren't accepted enough - Trolls are into consent? Consent also matters outside of the bedroom.

And I really hated that Gargoyles are Doms, Trolls are Doms - isn't there a single creature with a unique experience?

EEEEEEEE. Ohken and Wren might be my favorite now. (Though I have my eye on Mor and Keeper) but this was EVERYTHING. Ohken, troll whip, spicy and holy fricken heckin delicious. Hazel's writing transports you to Ever and you'll never want to leave. All the fun magical little details make my heart soar. I loved this so so much. Definitely one of my favorite reads yet!! I loved seeing Wren grow into her powers and embracing her differences. And of course driving Ohken WILD. Plant Daddy, yes pls. Ohken is a big hunk of green "yes sir" meat (and whip). I laughed out loud so many times my husband was like ok let me read it. LOL. Infinite stars. I can't wait for Alo's story!

Overall cute and I enjoyed it. Liked the entire cast of characters and that there's some secondary plot going on besides the romance. The trollwhip detail was a little single eyebrow raising. Like, really?

I felt like some of the explanation for the sport event going on here didn't quite make sense, in a way that suggests the author is not properly reconciling just how much space and stuff is needed for the crowd she's implying and how long it takes to prepare all of that. Also seemed a little strange how much of a big deal this event is but there's no routine practicing or games outside of the event?

I thought it was a little weird how they both kept emphasizing how long the relationship was taking or how slowly trolls court yet they're not actually going slow at all. Sure it was a whole ass month (sooo slow, cue eyeroll) before MMC Ohken asks out our human FMC Wren but once he does, they're banging on the first date and declaring forever love and permanent mates or whatever in days.

This kind of thing always gets me because it doesn't have to make no sense. It can make sense. The author could have simply changed how long things took in the book if this is what they were going for, but didn't. Of course there were other things on the timeline, like their aunt is expected to arrive and other events going on, that need to be worked around in this case but I still think it could have been doable. Other options include things like Ohken admitting he's moving much faster than trolls normally do because he's just ~so enamored~ or whatever, or making this book farther down in the series so there's more building tension between the characters while we read about the main couples in the other books. You can make it make sense!

Aaaanyway here's the only note I made to myself while reading:
I loved the fucking impromptu "adult chit-chat" party that involved not just the sisters but Shepherd, Alo, and Miriam all crammed into Morgan's room, gossiping about Wren's date with Ohken.

ALL HAIL PLANT DADDY MEAD KING 🙌🏼

Hazel has once again perfectly blended small town romance with monsters and left my heart feeling all the warm fuzzies. I absolutely love these books but I’m forever salty that Ever isn’t real and we can’t all move there. I need my own cinnadom roll!

Ohken was perfect for Wren. He taught her so much, in more ways than one, but especially with her magic. I was so proud when Wren finally started embracing her magic and succeeding beautifully. Their spicy interactions were on fire too! He was a delicious cinnadom, she was a little brat, and I loved every second of it.

I wanted to throttle the Hearth-holes though. I’m so glad Ever rallied around the Keeper and the town but goddamn, they’re going to be a problem later, I can just tell.

Next up we have Miriam and Alo and I hope he gets his head out of his butt quickly! We all know they’d be perfect together and sweet Iggy needs that love in his life too. He’s a side character I freaking LOVE and I was sad there wasn’t as much of him in this book so I hope we see more soon.

Overall, this was 5 stars for me. Small town fluff with monsters, found family, spice and a HEA? Perfect.

It's taken me a few days to be ready to write this review because TROLL WHIP. I'm not going to say more than that, because it will give away a spoiler that I think you all should experience the way I did. Utter shock. A blend of emotion between intrigue, fascination and horror. And I say this with all the love in the world. I love this author, I love this world, and at the end of the day, I would try troll whip. Even knowing what I know. Don't judge me. I wish I had an ounce of magic in me so that I could go live in Ever and find me a monster mate. These men are the best sort of mates, and honestly, the bar for real-life men just keeps getting higher and higher. Poor guys don't stand a chance anymore.

The chemistry between Wren Hector and Ohken Stonesmith has been simmering for weeks. The curvy green witch felt an instant connection to the 8-foot tall troll with a penchant for gardening and domination. Despite the age gap and the obvious size difference, she wants to climb him like a tree but isn't sure he wants the same. A troll's form of courtship is a constant state of edging, and that escalates quickly as Ohken takes on the task of helping Wren control her magic that will help keep Ever safe. Ohken recognizes Wren as his perfect match, but he needs to make sure she is able to handle him and match his energy both in and out of the bedroom. His protective instincts strengthen with each passing day, and when they finally come together, Ohken knows nothing will stop him from claiming Wren as his own.

If you thought the first book in the series was steamy, let's just say this one was on FIRE. Ohken was a daddy dom, and Wren met his need for control with the perfect blend of playful brat and willing submission. I was so invested in their relationship and intimacy that every time a plot point outside of the bedroom popped up, I wanted to skip ahead to the next steamy scene. Let's just say the methods Ohken and Wren had to use to make those steamy scenes work with their size difference were...intriguing. That being said, the story itself was captivating as well as it continued to show the struggles Ever worked through to keep the townspeople safe. We were able to meet some key players that provided insight into the politics and government of running monster towns, and it added color as to why certain characters (*cough* Keeper *cough*) are the way they are. I loved seeing Wren's sisters again, and their dynamic with each other and the town continues to gain new depth. Seeing the Keeper interact with Morgan made me crave his book even more than I did before, and I loved seeing them finally begin to show progress. Minor progress but it still counts!

The next book features two Ever residents, Miriam and Alo, as well as Alo's adorable son. I'm so excited to see their love finally bloom, as well as see the rest of the storyline continue to play out in the background.

**I received a free copy from the author and this is my honest review.**

Getting It On With Gargoyles ★★★★★

Actual Rating: 3.5 ⭐

Content/Trigger Warnings: Loss of parents, grief, blood, blood consumption, explicit sex scenes, alcohol & alcohol consumption, talk of loneliness and abandonment, anxiety, bondage, abduction/kidnapping, brief scene of assault, knife use, violence, brief scenes of psychological abuse

Author Content/Trigger Warnings: Light references to paternal death by accident, one scene of slight gore

Wowie friends, I had a pretty fun time reading this novella especially near the end. Oof, my adrenaline was off the charts. There was so many things I loved from the plus-size representation, to the scene of the Fae Queen, all the way to the parts with the Keeper. There was just so much that I adored, but I also had some issues with this story as well. I just hope my little review conveys all my thoughts and feelings well. As a little bonus note, after sitting on my thoughts and feelings for a bit, talking with my fellow buddy readers, I've changed my rating because there were a lot more things that bothered me about this story than I fully recognized.

"Okay Wren." I give myself a little pep talk. "It's not weird to meet a man under a bridge. It's not like every serial killer movie or every Grimm fairytale gone bad. It's gonna be fine."

I loved the chemistry between Wren and Ohken. They just had a really great balance of moments where they were spicy with one another, but also vulnerable. What I appreciated most was the way that when they had conflicts, they worked it out together. I always says 'teamwork makes the dream work' especially when it comes to relationships. And these two characters worked through so much together, it was really sweet and wholesome. I have a lot of appreciation for their dynamic. I also want to add in that Wren is a plus-size main character and I really loved the way not only Wren values her body, but also the way Ohken loves Wren and her body. We see a lot of that throughout this book and it's always a delight to read a book with a confident, plus-sized female character.

Getting to the good stuff you want to hear about, the spicy scenes. I really enjoyed the spicy scenes, to a certain extent. Those scenes were fun, steamy, and just an all around great time. My only issue for these scenes was the way Ohken's manly bits were described or the details of his release just was not my vibe. I think there will be readers who enjoy it and think it's so unique, but for me, it did not work. Every time those details would happen, I was immediately taken out of the scene and I had to rally my brain because it would be like randomly getting slapped in the face with a fish fillet. Not to mention, for some reason those details would also make me think of different species of mushrooms and fungi, and I just could not deal.

"He smiles at us when they get to the table, but doesn't sit. Morgan peers up at him, shielding her eyes from the sun. For the first time in a long time, she's not glaring at him like she hates him."

Now on to the things that really made this book for me. I'm sorry Wren and Ohken, but the two of them have nothing on Morgan and the Keeper. The scenes and details we get of the Keeper throughout this book, I'm deceased! I was thriving in all the ways and the way Morgan and the Keeper get competitive during bowling night... priceless! I really love these two and seeing little glimpses of them getting closer to one another, but also seeing the hardship side for the Keeper was just everything. Waiting for their book to come out is going to be the hardest, longest wait ever especially after the details we get in this book.

I said this in the first book, but I'm saying it again, Alo and Iggy especially Iggy has my whole heart. There's an amazing moment where Iggy quotes Alo and I just died of laughter. Iggy is the most precious, wholesome character in this series and he just deserves the world. It has me really excited for the next book in this series because it involves Alo and Miriam finally getting their story and I just can't wait to dive into that. I just know my heart is going to feel so full, so warm, and bursting with happiness because Alo and Iggy deserve to be happy. Plus, it'll be a single dad romance and single dad romances don't often get the same spotlight as single mother romances. So that's a nice little bonus!

"Iggy crosses his arms, preening under the attention. "Dad, you said to always tell the truth, and those people seem like jerks."

Though there's clearly so much I loved about this book, there were a few things that prevented me from giving this the full five star. We already addressed Ohken's manly bits, but I also want to address something else that kind of dimmed my love for Wren's character especially in the spicy scenes. Near the end, Wren jokes about being abused and jokes about forgetting their safe word, and both of those moments rubbed me the wrong way, and completely took me out of the moment. This is just a personal thing for me, not just as a reader, but as a person too. I'm not someone who jokes about abuse or safety especially when it comes to doing things in the bedroom. So reading those two little moments, back to back might I add, it just was not it for me. I skimmed after that because I was just done with that whole entire scene and it really soured the rest of my reading, a little.

Overall, I truly did enjoy my reading experience despite the hinderances. It was a lovely time and I'm so excited for the next book in this series to come out. I love this world, these characters, and I'm just hooked. It's also been reminding me of a game I've been playing a lot lately, Fae Farm with how cozy, fantastical this whole world has been. If you haven't checked this series out yet or Fae Farm, I highly recommend both! Both are marvelous and I think fellow readers and gamers will enjoy both!

This was an ok second novel. I didn’t really get how she suddenly understood her powers from sexy times with a troll. So, some of the character development fell flat to me. And overall nothing really happens. Then it’s sexy time with a troll. Then she can’t use her power. Then it’s sexy time with a troll and she can. And then she can’t. Then she suddenly can tremendously at the end? Just not consistent.

I don’t know if I really get the triplets thing. I don’t know why they can’t just be sisters. Or friends. The triplets have weird dialogue that I don’t find working (as someone who is really close with her sisters). So a lot of their just general character development is not personally working for me.
That said I love the friendship between The pixie and MC in this novel. Give me more of that.

Overall, I do enjoy the over-arching plot. ( I’m mostly invested to see what happens with the stick up his ass keeper and Morgan.) So I’ll continue the series.

Hooo boy is Ohken sexy AF.
I have a thing for size difference romances and this one didn’t disappoint. His whole slow burn attitude was hot. Wren was little miss sassy but was dealing with some difficult issues with her magic. Ohken was a good support for her and helped her find some measure of grace in her mind, despite her impatience. It was nice to have a FMC who was fat and utterly content with her body.
The spice was on point. I loved that he used his tusks to lightly scrape her skin all the time in affection. I was adorable.
Only thing I’m a bit sad about is the limited personal backstory on Ohken. It was overshadowed (understandably) by the lore of trolls.

Spice: 5/5

Triggers: abduction, violence (short), grief, discussion of fatphobia.

Now that Wren has spent some time in Ever, she realizes she needs to perfect her green magic or she can be the doom of them all. Who better to help her than the tall and handsome troll she's been flirting with since she got there?

I reALLLLY liked Wren, she's confident, sexy, and funny, but this was nottttt the book for me. Her mate is a huge troll, and when they're having their sexy time he constantly refers to all of him as a
troll. For example, there's a scene where he tells her how good she takes his big troll dick and I COULDN'T STAND IT. He constantly kept referring to his dick as a troll dick and I mean yeah, he's a troll, the dick belongs to a troll, therefore it is a troll dick, but it's not like he's calling her pussy a WITCH PUSSY. WHY!

Genuinely that turned me off so bad. Also, the fact that the troll whip the triplets have been drinking with their morning coffees is his cum had me losing my mind. He also was like GOD THE SMELL OF HER IN MY CAVE MAKES MY TROLL DICK TWITCH and I CEJUBGBIURSDBFJNKDC, PLEASe.

I REALLY liked the first book in this series despite the fact I didn't even want to read these. I only read the first book because I really wanted to read book four, and I know small-town books are best read in order. Getting it on with Gargoyles is a FIVE-star read for me, this one was just meh. With the time jump between books and the fact that these characters knew each other from the first book, I felt I didn't get the slowburn Ohken had promised trolls do when courting. These books are short and meant to be fun, but when the male main character promises literal edging and slowburn and you get none of that it's like OH OKAy!

I am GEEKED to read book two, but pls don't make Alo and Miriam refer to their parts as gargoyle dick and pixie pussy™

Thank you to Hazel Mack for this ARC in exchange for an honest review 😊

Tangling follows Wren, the Hector triplet that inherited the Green Witch powers. After she unintentionally destroys a gourd that may or may not have housed a pixie family, she starts one on one lessons with Ohken. Ohken is the town’s resident bridge troll who happens to own a plant shop…and he’s 8 feet tall, green, muscular, and loves to flirt with Wren. Wren is unapologetically plus sized & sweet plant daddy Ohken loves her curves. Ohken begins very slowly courting Wren as trolls court their chosen mate very slowly. While Ohken and Wren go on dates and continue to escalate their relationship, the town of Ever prepares to host a SkyBall sporting event. The recent attack by the Thralls and Wesley has The Keeper on edge, especially once the Hearth arrives to ensure everything goes well. In true Ever fashion, everything does not go well. But you’ll have to read for those details.

I absolutely love these books. They are auto-reads for me at this point & are so very funny and comforting to me. I love how unique each book has been so far while staying true to the small town chaos & continuing the overarching storyline.

Another cute and cozy small town monster romance from Hazel Mack, and I can't get enough! Wren and Oken are finally making a move with each other, and I am here for it!

Wren is working on her green witch magic, and it's not going well so far. She keeps blowing things up everytime she tries, and she gets more and more distraught each time. In steps Oken with the private lesson, and helpful words of encouragement. He already has a knack for flowers and other greenery, so he is the perfect help. Not to mention, he is quite the tease too. Watching Oken and Wren's relationship progress was so cute. He always encouraged her to keep trying, and even came up with different ways to help.

I can't wait to continue on with this series!

"Most trolls are Doms, Wren. There are a lot of reasons for that, but the concepts of trust, safety, and consent are deeply ingrained in our culture. I will never do something that you don't allow and enjoy. You have my word."

I'm officially in love with Plant Daddy - goodness he is one sexy Troll. I enjoyed getting back into this world and characters! Ohken was so supportive of Wren while she struggled to grow her magic. And we love a plus size FMC who loves the way she looks and isn't afraid to voice that and show off how amazingly beautiful she is!

And of course getting all the other characters from town! I love that even though the book focuses on one couple we still get character development from the others and sneak peeks into their lives and stories.

I'm so excited to read about Alo, Miriam, and Iggy next!!

This was a huge disappointment. The size difference was annoying with how repetitive it was. I didn’t know that the hero was a ‘Dom’. I hate books where the heroine has to change herself for the hero. She wasn’t submissive, but he kept saying that she’ll learn to like it. It was creepy and it sounded like manipulation and abuse to me. Why did she have to learn to be submissive? Why didn’t he learn to be ‘normal’? Why is the woman always the one who has to change?

And where did he get claws from? In one scene, suddenly, he had claws and is shredding her clothes with them.

The troll whip was too much for me.

Also, my brown eyes rolled whenever they mentioned her green eyes.

I may try Morgan’s book, but after this disaster, I’m not sure.

This was a fun read, I found myself giggling at some of Wrens antics.
Wren and Ohken are a sweet couple together but I would be lying if I said that halfway through the book I was less interested in their story and more interested in what the heck is going on between the Mayor and Morgan! Also who the aunt will end up falling for when she finally makes it into the town.

“Trolls are huge fans of edging, and I’ve been edging Wren Hector since the day we met.”

Size difference to the point where a special potion is needed. And that’s all I shall say on that topic.
