Lela Lee is a cartoonist, actress and writer. Her "Angry Little Girls" weekly comic strip and six anthology comic books is syndicated by Universal Press and published by Abrams and Perseus books respectively. “Angry Little Girls” is the umbrella name for her main character, the “Angry Little Asian Girl” which Lee created in 1994 while she was a sophomore at UC Berkeley.
In addition to the weekly comic strip, Lela also acts and writes. She is currently working on a pilot script and book. As an actress, she was series regular Jodi Chang in the SyFy show “Tremors,” and recurred as Bonnie, a surgical intern on “Scrubs." She has also guest starred on “Shameless," “Grey’s Anatomy,” and "Better Call Saul.”
Lela earned a bachelor's degree in Rhetoric from UC Berkeley. She is married and has two sons.
Gave this to a colleague with a really reluctant struggling reader the other day. She just returned it as the student loved it and now wants to read more. Hooray! It is really silly, full of gasps and giggles and perfect for a 1 sitting read.
Another fun and cute read from Lela Lee! This time, it's full of funny satirical comics of various cultures. As always, it stars angry little girls! This time around, my favorite is the Angry Asian Girl ^^ She and Disenchanted Jewish Girl got along so well I could cry lololol Again, not particularly appropriate for Angry Little Girls, but I won't object a bigger girl to read this!
My colleague bought this book for a Primary library and it ended it up in my hands due to a few of the vocabulary. Slightly unsure of the target audience but if you understand sarcasm it is hilarious!!
This is one of the good ones. The book is entertaining enough for me to see the new point of view when it comes to feelings. Can this book related to the concept of "mad women"? Maybe.
Being a mentally-ill girl is hard and annoying! That's the main thing I'm learning from this series lol...and I'm also learning that even though I was depressed the last decade of my life it's literally just due to my intense need for justice and feeling wronged every damn day of my youth
Quite a bit funnier than the first one I read!! Just read it in pretty much one sitting in the library of my school and I had to hold back my laughter during parts that were really hilarious.
Snarky funny female focused graphic novel/ comic strip - right up my alley. Simple bright pictures with limited text and classic characters...must explore more of this author's work...
Also freaking hilarious! I love that the little Asian girl is forever flipping people off in the front of both of these books. And the way her mom says "r" instead of "l".
Here's a sample of the ridiculously NON-PC'ness of this author:
disenchanted (jewish) princess to Angry Asian: "What's it like to be Asian? Angry Asian girl: "What's it like to be Jewish?" DJP:I'm not really a practicing jew. I sometimes eat pork AAG: I'm not really a practicing Asian. I sometimes use a fork.
and you have to see the pictures - it's just hilarious!!
Here's one more example:
AAG: take that you little white girl! DJP: I'm not white, you're white! AAG: I'm not white. Asians face a lot of discrimination still. DJP: Well, Jewish people have been persecuted for centuries. AAG: Yeah, but we can't blend in. (while they're playing tennis) DJP: Score. Your point.
:). Now, since it's an Asian who lent me this book, and my dad was raised Jewish, it's pretty hilarious. And ridiculously non-PC. good times ;)
Not really a graphic novel since it's a bunch of Lela Lee's short comic strips, but it's hilarious! An example: 1. What are you doing? 2. I'm spending quality time with my boyfriend. 1. Let's go shoping? 2. Hmm...love or merchandise? 2. I'll take the merchandise!
These sweet little angry girls are so wonderful that I can hardly wait to go on to her third book! Lela Lee puts her finger on so many of the adult frustrations of life with humor and insight. Thank you, Ms. Lee!
All in all ok. I was hoping more novel in this graphic novel, but more a collection of comic strips...with some real gems though! Maybe I'm not angry enough to relate to all of it.
Funny, wry, straight-up humour with simple artwork. Kinda reminds me of what South Park might be like if it featured only girls from POC/Jewish backgrounds.
